Yesterday:

SNES Chrono Trigger (boxed) - Incomplete, missing the map but cart, manual, and box are all in decent shape.

WII BlastWorks (sealed) - Factory sealed. I don't ask questions.

Today:

Game Boy Micro (sealed) - Brandy new.

PS3 SOCOM (complete) - Fairly recent release, this is the bundled set with the wireless Bluetooth headphone.

Impossamole while not super expensive, is one of the more difficult Turbo games to come across. Besides the complete turbo collection earlier this year, have you had any other copies come in?

Once or twice more in three years.

I love Blastworks, I think it's a wonderful game. It makes me sad that somebody didn't even give it a try.:(

Slow day, bad weather, but one very nice trade-in.

NES Lot (vatious) - A guy trades in his entire NES collection which includes two NES systems, Tengen Tetris, Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Bubble Bobble, Super Mario 3, and lots and lots of others, mostly good stuff. Very low "filler" quotient.

Fairly light trade-in day for a Saturday.

Game Axe (loose) - In great condition, this is the Famicom handheld that was pretty much the only way you could play NES cartridges portably until recently. First time ever traded in to the store.

SNES Game Lot (loose) - A pile of about 20 games. They were really dirty but it was worth cleaning 'em up. Included 2 Super Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World. Even the "fringe" stuff was pretty good.

Few trade-ins today, pretty good quality stuff overall. Not really worth singling out 360 and PS3 games like GTA IV or PS2 Alone in The Dark or TNA Impact because they're fairly common trade-ins but they move pretty fast as well. Otherwise...

PlayStation Silent Hill (complete) - One minty complete black label Silent Hill. One of those "top 20 requested" so it's always nice to get so we can say "yes we have that" to a customer.

One kinda cool item from yesterday's trade-ins:

NES Zapper (complete) - I've only seen this BOXED once before, and that's the one I own. Now we've got one in the store too. Pretty cool conversation piece!

(never saw a singular boxed orange zapper, always wondered if it existed or not)

oh man is that gameaxe boxed by any chance? I would love to get a gameaxe even just for the engrish text on the box. Also has anyone ever traded in a top guy?

*edit* because the top guy is so very obscure i figured id link to a page with a picture of it here just so you don't all think i made it up lol http://members.fortunecity.com/davidlevine/ga.htm (third picture down)

*add* HAHA just read this whole page seems it was from a couple of years ago when the GBA had just been released just love this quote "Are you still wondering, “Is the Game Axe right for me?” Do you have a desire to play your old NES games on a handheld, without trying to hold your breath for Nintendo to release a collection for the Gameboy Advance? (Something that will never happen)"

A few tidbits from the past few days.

TurboGrafx-16 Lot (various) - Loose system with TurboStick and TurboTap, a few controllers and some decent games (unboxed but in CD case) including Galaga 90, Blazing Lazers, Bonk's Adventure, and a loose Air Zonk.

NES Mega Man (complete) - Complete in box, in pretty good shape.

Atari 2600 Atari Video Cube (loose) - Old school goodness.

What is it that makes your store sucessfull? Is if the popularity of digitpress, the location, the amount of kids and gamers in the area? Your game store seems to get in alot of great stuff on a daily basis that some game stores in different areas might not see in months or even years time. what did you attribute the amount of business you get to?

Upon reading this entry, I too realized I had acquired a boxed Zapper a from a NES lot I purchased at a flea market a couple years ago. I didn't think much of it at the time as I was more interested in the carts. Just ran upstairs to dig it out but alas, it is NOT complete. No instruction manual. Just the box, styrofoam packing, and the grey gun. How rare are these things anyway?

I wouldn't say "rare", but I would say "uncommon" in the box. I'd bet that 95% of all Zappers came from the Nintendo console itself. Like I said, I've only encountered a boxed Zapper twice.

You're exaggerating a bit, or my friends' stores are similarly more fortunate than the ones you're used to. In my case, I think it's a little of all of the things you mention. Some previous "reputation", a GREAT location, and a place that is immediately obviously quite different than any GameStop/EB you'd walk into. My staff is great, and we've worked really hard to make the place a community meeting place. So it's all that stuff, I guess.

Today:

Nintendo Wii System (loose) - Yeah, yeah... but since I've reported every other one I've received over the course of the year, why stop now? It's "data" for my year-end analysis.

SNES Super Metroid (loose) - That's the most desirable in a lot of various NES, SNES and N64 games, though there was a lot of good titles in there. Kinda a slow trade-in day for a Saturday, really.

Air Zonk is quite a prize. A loose still goes for an arm and a leg on Ebay. Did any game come with carton box?

No, which is why I described the lot as "some decent games (unboxed but in CD case)" and Air Zonk specifically as "loose". Sorry if that was confusing.

A little catch-up here. Nothing inspiring over the past few days but at least a few items we're happy to have.

SNES Super Mario All-Stars (loose) - Not such a big deal, you might think. But this is a major title, in high demand and often sends away customers either happy (if we have it) or disappointed (if we lie and say we don't). We got two of them over the last four days. That doesn't help the happy-to-disappointed ratio very much, but it's better than nothing.

SNES Super Mario RPG (loose) - From a totally different seller than the two above and part of an otherwise not very interesting pile of SNES titles.

PS1 Namco Museum 5 "O" (complete) - One of the lesser-seen editions from the Namco Museum collection.

Game Boy Advance Game Lot (complete) - Several complete games were traded in, including Dr. Mario and Puzzle League.

Nintendo DS Lot (complete) - Great selection of games including Oendan (import), Mystery Case Files, Mazes of Fate 2, Hoshigami Mix, and Etrian Odyssey 2.

NES Famiclone (complete) - I forget the name of it, but it has PlayStation-style controllers, guns, a dance mat (?), two paddles (not the Atari-style... these are PING PONG paddles), four cartridges, and the system supports Famicom cartridges as well. One of the better clone packages I've seen.

Ouendan is (basically) the Japanese version of Elite Beat Agents. As a matter of fact, there were TWO of them released over there. What I mean by basically is that Elite Beat Agents is Ouendan with different story lines and American tunes. Nintendo Power did a story on them a while back as part of a story of great games that never made it over here.

As far as the Famiclone, I see lots of these on Broad Street here in Elizabeth. They have like 3000 games built in and they look like Playstations and use a realistic light gun(realistic as it actually LOOKS like a gun). Not sure if they have a Famicom slot, but those consoles are common in urban areas and sell for about $30.

Sorry for the late quoting, but I haven't checked this thread out in ages.

OK, a little catch-up again. Remember we're getting into the holiday weekends so I'm doing my best to keep up here.

Thursday:
Kinda dull trade-in day but lots and lots and lots of common stuff that's "OK" to sell, just not very interesting to this group. Of all the stuff I decided to pick one thing out. I choose:

ColecoVision Spy Hunter (loose) - Yeah yeah, it doesn't seem like much. But honestly I don't think this game has ever been traded in here, so it's worth mentioning as the "pick of the day".

Friday:
Much busier trade-in day.

Mega Man 9 Press Kit - One of a thousand or two made, it's a Mega Man NES replica box with a replica cart and a mini disc with press info inside. It's all meant to look very "old school" and impressive to collectors. My anonymous seller had three of them, and was ready to sell one to the store, give one away at a future NAVA (ALERT! ALERT!) and keep the third for himself.

SNES Lot (loose) - Two different trade-ins had a bunch of loose SNES games. I wrote down Final Fantasy II and III, Mario Kart, and Mario All-Stars but there were about 40 *good* games in total. This lot made our SNES bin overflow for the first time in quite awhile.

NES Lot (loose) - See above. Highlights: Mega Man 2 and 3, Dragon Warrior II, Mike Tyson's Punch-out!!, all of the Mario's, etc.

PlayStation Lot (complete) - Three different sellers produced quite a pile of nice PS1 games. Highlights: Castevania SoTN, FF Tactics, Xenogears, Thousand Arms, Mega Man Legends 2, FF8, FF9, Legend of Mana, Grandia, Dragon Warrior VII.

Saturday:
Busy busy day but just "okay" trade-ins.

XBox 360 Spider-man Web (complete) - This is a fairly new game which is always interesting to me when traded in so soon. Looks like fun, took it home and hope to try it out within the next few days.

PS3 Fallout 3 Collector's Edition (complete) - OOH. This is the lunchpail edition of the game. I own the 360 version and love the game as well as the extras but the seller did not agree with me.

PS3 Fallout 3 Hardcover Strat Guide - There was no question this was going right into my collection. In fact, I can probably USE this guide since somehow I finished the game too early and got a crappy ending. Of the hardcover strat guides I've seen, this is in the top three! Of three that I've seen :) Very nice, really.

PS3 Buzz (complete) - This is the game in the oversize box with the four controllers so you can play a wireless trivia game show with your friends. MY family loved Scene It so this may be our next gathering's game. We still have a new verion of it in the store.

Saturn Import Lot (complete) - Jewel-case versions of King of Fighters '95 and Capcom Generations I highlight the list of games added to the shelf on Saturday.

Super Famicom Lot (loose) - NOOOOO! Just as we were starting to move these out on eBay, another box of 'em turns up (from same seller). I am promised that this is the end of them. Mostly fringe stuff with a few SF2, DK Country, Mario Karts thrown in for good measure.

Yesterday.

XBox 360 Gears of War 2 (complete) - Yup, released just a few days ago and first time traded in. The kid didn't like the changes and traded it in for the new Call of Duty game *shrug*

Today.

3DO System (complete) - A complete in box Panasonic FZ-1 3DO system. The big boy. It's always fun to see someone walk in with one of these because there's always a good story behind each one. This guy was the template: bought it early in the system's history, got discontent with the library (which from what I could tell was just FIFA and Jurassic Park), bought a PS1, forgot he ever had a 3DO.

SNES Game Lot (loose) - Nice bundle of high-profile SNES games including Super Mario All-Stars, Kart, and World. Also Starfox, Magical Quest, Zelda Link to the Past and more.

Yesterday:

Wii System (loose) - Yet ANOTHER one of these in the store. I've seen more used ones than new ones pass through here over the last two months.

XBox 360 Fable II (complete) - Mentioned because the game is fairly new though it isn't the first time it was traded in. The first one came home with me at least a week ago though I still haven't tried it (have been mesmerized with Fallout 3).

Today:

Dreamcast Marvel vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom II (various) - Part of a larger DC lot traded in. MvsC is complete, MvsC2 is missing the manual.

PS1 Lunar (complete) - Technically not complete but it's in the jewel case with the instruction manual. Just missing the outer "collector's box" and little hardcover book.

If it has the instruction manual in the jewel case then it is complete. The big box version didn't have a paper manual in the jewel case since the hardcover book was the manual. You might have the Fan Edition of the game that doesn't come with all the bells and whistles.

Out of town last weekend so I have some catching up to do!

Friday:

Sealed NES Games (new) - You don't see this everyday, unfortunately it's just a small lot of five but they look like they've been in storage for the last 20 years. Excitebike, Hogan's Alley, Seicross, T&C Surf Designs and Fighting Golf

Saturday:

N64 Game Lot (loose) - It had actually been several weeks since anyone has traded in Super Smash Bros so this lot seemed worth mentioning. Besides that it included Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Hydro Thunder, Vigilante 8 Second Offense, Paper Mario, Mario Party 3 and about a dozen other pretty good games.

PS2 Jurassic Park Operation Genesis (missing manual) - Seems to be a bit of a rarity.

PS2 Time Crisis Project Titan (complete) - Complete in the box with the GunCon 2.

Sunday:

XBox 360 Lot (complete) - Shoppers begin trading in their worthwhile games for holiday gifts, sometimes for themselves :) In this small pile of very recent games we've got Fable II, Saint's Row 2, and Gears of War 2, all games less than a month old.

Nintendo 64 Ogre Battle (loose)

SNES Chrono Trigger (loose) - Some irony here, in that this was traded in on the day that the Nintendo DS version of the game was released. So we got both in on the same day.

SNES System (complete) - The standard 2-controller/Super Mario World package. The system was all "good plastic", too. None of that brown stuff.

NES Contra (loose)

N64 Lot (loose) - Just a collection of really good titles, including GoldenEye 007, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong 64, and Starcraft 64. These are games that come and go very quickly.

PS1 Marvel vs. Capcom (complete)

PS1 Castlevania (complete) - Black label version.

Sega 32X Zaxxon: Motherbase 2000 (complete) - Listing this here as we don't get a lot of 32X stuff in and this minty game is less common than the usual Doom, Virtua Racing, Star Wars 32X trade-in.

Saturday:

Ah, NAVA...

Saturn Panzer Dragoon Saga (complete) - Complete and as mint as you're going to ever find. Traded in by a NAVA regular...

Saturn Shining Force III (complete) - As above. These were traded for a bunch of current-gen games. Not the usual "the store wins" but an equal trade where we get to sell a few rare Saturn games that just look nice on the shelves for awhile.

PC Warhammer Collector's Edition (new) - This has to be the HEAVIEST PC game package I've ever seen. Apparently has a couple of hardcover books and a pewter figure inside as well as the game and some exclusive game content. Seems pretty cool, anyway.

PS1 Lot (complete) - This fellow traded in about 30 PS1 games and every one was unusual. Included in the bunch were Tobal No 1, Jado Cocoon, Tail Concerto, Juggernaut, Torneko, Ehrgeiz, Kodelka, Guardian's Crusade, Granstream Saga, Hoshigami: Ruining Earth, lots more but you get the idea.

PS3 MK vs. DC (complete) - Less than two weeks released.

Saturn Golden Axe: The Duel (complete)

Genesis Mutant League Hockey (missing manual) - I always wax poetic when someone trades this in, which is uncommon. I love the fact that you can win the game by killing so many players that they can't put a full team on the ice.

360 Fallout 3 (complete) - Love this game. First time traded in.

360 Gears of War 2 (complete) - Another holiday release traded in early in the holiday season. Fine by me.

He said he would hold that game for me while we worked out our trading deal. I can't believe he went back on his word!

I guess you hadn't worked out your trading deal by 11:30pm, because that's about the time we worked out a deal in your absence. Turns out my initial offer was more than twice your final offer. Tip to you: you can't "lowball" veteran collectors. It makes them want to "go back on their word".

I try not to compete with people on NAVA deals. The whole point of these get-togethers is to get collectors trading amongst themselves and for all intents and purposes I am a "retired" collector. I'm always happy to see great trades go down. But when there's something really cool like that just sitting there at 11pm I can't just let it walk out the door, right?

Onto today... this is the best time of year. Good games are out. People want them (for themselves or as gifts but usually for themselves). Trade-ins are abundant.

SNES Super Mario RPG (loose) - Any day we get this traded in is a good day, but especially on a short and busy holiday season Sunday.

N64 Lot (complete) - A nice boxed lot of games included Dr. Mario, Pokemon Puzzle League, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and about a dozen others.

Hey, I offered what I was willing to pay for it. If he didn't agree to it and doesn't want to continue the trade further, fine. No skin off my back. BUT we were STILL deliberating. As a matter of fact, he AGREED to the game in a separate bag and hold onto the game for me, so we could continue our trade conservation via e-mail when I got home and make a list of items to trade for it.

Although, I don't blame you with what happened, but, at least, expected you to have the courtesy to ask if he was holding the game for someone. It is a hot item AND it was placed in a bag separated from the trade bag, a good indication it was pending for, if not me then, someone else. Everyone on here knows you demand the respect to not have someone barge in and make offers while in the middle of a trade and the decency to wait until it is done. Why? Cause we know you'd return the favor by not pulling such a stunt behind our backs.

I didn't think you'd go down this road, but I'm prepared to travel this route if you so desire.

For starters, there was no special "separate bag" held off to the side. Greg and I have made many, many trades over the years and he's very good at communicating. Clearly, you are not. Secondly, you don't really expect me to ask everyone if they have pending deals with others before I start a deal, do you? And in THIS case, there's a collectible game sitting in someone's box at 11pm and I should not only ask "do you have a pending deal on that game that isn't in a special separate bag" but also NOT ask "what do you want for that?" Please.

And finally. Am I correctly reading in your message above that I'm "pulling a stunt" behind your back? If this is so, then we are way beyond message board communication. Call me or stop by the store so we can seriously discuss this matter.

Maybe you guys should brawl it out in the DP parking lot?

Streets of Rage style perhaps- with crowbars, knives, etc. to pick up and throw. Maybe a turkey leg or an apple to replenish the HP meter? winner gets shining force III?

...Just saying.

and if that does go down- definitely youtube it. :)

This is actually pretty interesting. You should note the kind of person that traded the game in. Do you ever start conversations with the customers regarding rarity and stuff like that? I'd assume you wouldn't, just because it might effect a deal. But I'm just curious.
www.b2cshoes.com

Since this thread has suddenly evolved into a discussion about ethics, let me break this down into a simple Q&A so we're all on the same page. Answers first.

1) I'm feeling a little defensive about this so pardon me if it sounds defensive. But I've got nothing to hide so I am willing to discuss with this forum community.

2) Anyone who begins a dialogue with "YOU SHOULD..." kinda puts me off.

3) Do I have conversations about rarity, thinking it will affect a deal? Yes, I almost always do. I don't care if it affects a deal. It is much more important to me to keep a customer, especially one who is trading in GOOD stuff, than it is to make a few bucks on a one-time trade-in. This is the same philosophy I embrace when I sell new titles (where is "Golden Compass: The Game", they ask, and I explain that I'd never stock a game that's cashing in on a movie unless it was traded in) or "unrecommend" games that I personally think suck ("How good is 'Pimp My Ride', they ask, and I explain that there are things stuck under my toilet lid that are more fun to play with). I guess you could say that I have a pretty rigid philosophy regarding customer satisfaction, including their trade-ins.

These things said, I have follow-up questions that directly relate, by number, to each of the answers above.

1) Even my family doesn't ask questions this personal about my business. Have we met? Is this my brother-in-law Rocco?

2) Exactly what sort of experience do you have to dictate what I should do either as a collector or even as a retailer?

3) Since you requested my policy on trade-ins, what is yours (or would yours be if you were in this business)? What level of "rarity know-how" would you expect from customers and how would you temper this with your own knowledge factoring in the need to pay the rent every month? What do you feel the Digital Press store should change, knowing what you know now?

What I think would be a neat twist to this whole thing is if it turned out that you both had been dealing with different people all along. Not that there would usually be 2 people at a NAVA meeting trying to get rid of a copy of Shining Force III.

Neither did audiences, based on domestic box office results versus what it cost to make the movie.

Lots of good retro stuff traded in yesterday.

Nintendo Tabletop Popeye (loose) - Missing the battery cover but we'll at least get around that by creating a substitute. I had never played the game before, thought it was going to be the arcade game. It's not. More like a weird Popeye vs. Bluto boxing match.

Nintendo Micro "vs. System", Boxing (loose) - In great condition.

NES Lot (loose) - Sixty NES cartridges, of which about half are the "staples" (Super Mario 2 and 3, Castlevania, Zelda, etc). Nothing rare but a timely holiday arrival.

SNES Lot (loose) - About a dozen loose carts, as I started going through these it seemed they were all going to be sports games. Four of them were non-sports and one was Zelda.

You should limit the amount of sports games that can be brought in on 1 trade, hahaha. kidding dude, but it would be funny.

"Uh, Sorry sir. We have a 3 sports game trad in limit"

hahahaha

A little catch-up, as the past few days have been kinda crazy.

Monday:
3DO System (loose) - Panasonic FZ-1 system with a bunch of good games including Star Fighter, Road Rash, and Alone in the Dark 1 and 2.

Sega CD System (loose) - The model 1 complete with a Genesis system.

ColecoVision Expansion Module (loose) - The steering wheel, used in Turbo, Dukes of Hazzard, Destructor and a few others.

Tuesday:
SNES Lot (complete) - One guy with a big box of complete SNES games. Mostly unspectactular but we're always happy with Legend of Zelda, and there was also a Dr. Mario/Tetris and Robotrek in the lot. Nice.

Wednesday:
Saturn System (loose)

PS3 Resistance Fall of Man 2 (complete) - First time traded in.

PS3 SOCOM (complete) - The new one, game only, no bluetooth headset.

Today:
Vectrex System (loose) - I think it's been about six months since we've had one of these traded in. In nice condition, too.

Coleco Gemini System (loose) - This is Coleco's version of the Atari 2600. As far as I know, this was only in the store two times before this, a rare gem.

ColecoVision WarGames (loose)

Famicom Castlevania 3 (complete) - Complete in box.

Famicom Gradius 2 (complete) - Complete in box.

Atari 2600 Spike's Peak/Ghost House (loose) - Xonox double-ender, good condition.

Atari 2600 Gravitar (complete) - A complete Gravitar! It's the common one, but still nice to have.

Game & Watch Lot (loose) - Pretty cool. Three games, all in great shape with battery covers and all: Bomb Sweeper, Pinball, and Donkey Kong Circus. I've never seen the latter before, other than at the CGE museum.

Ha ha ha. Hey, back in the day they called me Mr. Movie game, because I always seemed to be drawn to movie and TV show games, no matter how bad they were.

D'OH! I just won an ebay auction last weekend with one of them in it, because I just can't seem to get one that works. With my luck, what I get won't either.

As this project nears its close it seems the trade-ins have been less interesting. Still lots of stuff coming in but very little that hasn't been mentioned before or has any kind of real "wow factor" to this sort of crowd.

Yesterday was pretty good though.

Game Boy, Game Boy Color, GBA Lot (complete) - Roughly 35 boxed complete games from all of the various Game Boy eras. Lots of really good titles including Castlevania Circle, Castlevania Harmony, Mr. Driller 2, Lost Vikings, and Double Dragon

Saturn Golden Axe (complete)

Saturn Sega Ages (complete)

NES Final Fantasy (boxed) - Missing the instructions and the map but I think I have these items 'orphaned' in the basement.

PS1 Tomba! (complete)

SNES Kirby Dream Land 3 (loose) - First time I've ever seen this game, certainly the first time traded in here. Part of a lot where most of the games were pretty familiar.

PS2 Gradius 3 & 4 (complete) - Not particularly rare but not often traded in and always sells fast.

Gizmondo Lot (complete) - No system, but eight complete games.

N64 Zelda Ocarina of Time (complete)

It was meant to be a one year project. I have no intention of doing it through 2009, though if something REALLY interesting gets traded in I will post here!

IMO that's a mistake. This thread creates greater interest in the store AND the forums.

Why? Who knows. I guess folks like me are just plain nosy. Or it could be that most of us are a good enough distance from the store where we can't reasonably be there on a daily or weekly basis, but through the magic of this thread, in a way we can be.

It also creates some interesting conversation about collecting/gaming occasionally.

Today.

PS3 LittleBigPlanet (new) - Y'know, I still haven't had a chance to play this game because it hasn't been traded in yet. So when someone trades one in, I expect it to at least be opened. As it turns out, this guy is a top salesman at a major gaming chain and wins a lot of stuff that he already has. This was one of those times, and he had a few others:

Rock Band 2 (new)

Nintendo DS Lite System (new) - Blue.

Other stuff:

Nintendo DS Cyberia (complete) - First time I've seen this one. Apparently a Gamestop exclusive?

PSP Spider-man Web of Shadows (complete) - Since there haven't been a lot of interesting PSP trade-ins in general, here you go, the most intersting in over a week.
