I know this might not get answered but I think I'll ask anyway for pure curiosity sake.

Joe have you ever had someone bring in a item you wanted to buy off them and had a customer/regular buy it out from under you?

I would be willing to bet if it did happen, they both would be asked to leave.

Agreed. It happened at the computer store I frequent/volunteer at. My friend Nick (who owns it) was trying to make a purchase of a laptop computer for himself and one of his *friends bought it from the guy while he was in the back getting the money and a power cord to test it out. It led to more than one huge fight.

It's funny because this kind of undercutting a store's profits is never something that would happen anywhere else.

You go up to a deli counter..."I'd like a turkey and cheese on a roll, please."

Another customer walks up to you..."Excuse me, but I have this turkey and cheese I'm looking to sell. I'll sell it to you for less than this deli would."

You: "Deal."

Deli Owner: "WTF!?"

I am not trying to be a smart ass here, but I thought you don't give prices over the phone. Did I think wrong on this?

Policy is that we do not. But I will sometimes override this if the item mentioned is something I really want. Boxed complete NES systems I can sell all day long. Not that one, though.

Joe have you ever had someone bring in a item you wanted to buy off them and had a customer/regular buy it out from under you?

The first time it happened to me I got burned (as JerseyDevil mentioned, that was a blog post from awhile back). Never again. I had this happen again just a few days ago. It was for a Legend of Zelda NES. Just as one guy was trading in a stack of games, another customer says "let me see what he offers you, because I'll pay more for this". I immediately said "you won't do that in my store" and before getting too deeply into how this is not acceptable, the guy backed down, apologized - and even the seller was cool about it. Instead, the "buyer" asked for me to hold the game after I bought it, he would buy it from me at my price regardless.

Back on topic. Today:

Genesis Shining Force (loose) - loose but I keep an "orphan" section and at least had the box for it, so this will be a pretty nice little addition to someone's Genesis collection in the near future.

Genesis Shining in the Darkness (loose) - maybe not as popular as Shining Force but just as uncommonly traded in.

Wii Arcade Stick (complete) - by Hori, like new in the box. Traded in last night during NAVA. I took the stick out of the box today to see how it felt. Really nice, it does the "click" thing as you circle the stick around. The thing is practically new.

Genesis Phantasy Star II (complete) - not only complete, but it was traded in with the little strategy guide as well. Also a NAVA acquisition.

Interesting, I sell refurbished NES's on the side and nobody has ever asked me for the original box. (and I would not give mine away anyway) Would you say most of the people who come into your store are collectors vs. people who just play games?

Ha, yeah I'm in the same boat. I've probably sold over 100 NES systems, and not one box. I've got about 10 sitting at home, just taking up space. I'm about ready to pitch them because it's just not practical to ship the things. If I lived in the DP area I'd bring them by.

Most? No. Some? Yes.

Consider that I have display cases where there is ALWAYS at least a NES Action Set on display. This is what grabs people's attention. They want THAT. I don't often have complete Action Sets for sale though, so I point them to my refurb sets. They usually are happy with this, but sometimes not. The very fact that I don't have one for sale in those moments indicates to me that I need more of them.

Today:

Incredibly light day both in sales and trade-ins. Strange considering the gigantic weekend we had. Oh well. One standout.

XBox Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (loose) - yep, here we go again with no box or manual, but the disk is in good shape. Since it's compatible with 360 I expect this will be gone soon.

Do they want complete as in like Box and everything? Or just console, gun, 2x controllers and mario/duck hunt?

When I used to work at a non-corporate game store, (and I followed ALL the rules mind you :D) we couldn't keep NES consoles in stock. We would get them, working or not, and someone in the store wanted it immediately. Here is another thing you might find strange. We couldn't keep any mario game in. We charged about $9.99 for SMB/Duck Hunt, and they would fly outta the store. $19.99 for Mario 2, $15.99 for Mario 3, all would go. Same with SNES, people wanted SNES+ Mario allstars+World. We got away with charging $100 for our so called "SNES starter kit" which included: Cleaned SNES, 2 controllers, choice of S-video, Rf, or red/white/yellow cables and Super mario world. If it was All-stars, or the All-stars+world cart, the price was higher. Sad thing, we had a copy of Mega man 7 that never left the store at 19.99. It was there until the owner decided to close the store and retire.

When it comes to NES or SNES, people will buy anything. I sell tons of Generation NEX and FC Twins (and probably Retro Duo now that I have those in the store as well) when i'm out of NES or SNES consoles.

As for the high prices of Mario games, I'm not far off. I sell SMB1/Duck Hunt cheaply enough (3.99) I suppose, but SMB2 and SMB3 at 14.99 and I can't keep them in stock despite the fact that they're ALWAYS included in someone's pile when they're trading in NES. And I won't even get started with SNES. I honestly believe that I could double the prices of everything and it would still sell. Trouble is, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night :)

That's exactly what the indie shops (and a Play N Trade) around here do! $30 for SMB 2 or 3, a little more at one of them. I've no idea if they sleep or not, I imagine not, as they are too busy swimming through their vault full of gold coins. ROFL

We could never move those clone consoles. People wanted the toaster nes. Or as one customer described it in his heavy southern accent "one of them that makes the ka-ching noises when you push the game down."

As far as clone consoles, again.. I think again it's all about location. You could never sell classic games in general in my area as a business and survive more than two days. Yet when I go up to anywhere in Wisconsin not only can you sell those clones in a realistic way, there's classic video game stores everywhere. Too bad I only have a bike and have to wait for someone to give me a ride to these stores.. I want to get some more video games randomly.

Today.

ColecoVision System (loose) - probably doesn't sound like much of a highlight but these have become really scarce in these parts. Just needed a little TLC and now it looks good as new!

ColecoVision Quest For Quintana Roo (loose) - from the ColecoVision collection above.

ColecoVision Cross Force (loose) - pretty sure this is the first time we've had this in our store, see above.

Nothing too spectacular today, though there were some quality 360 and PS2 titles, just nothing that stood out. There was one trade-in that was nice.

Super NES Collection (loose) - included the system, and a bunch of really good games, about 20 in all. Highlights included Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 3, Legend of Zelda and Contra III. Good stuff. A little dirty, but it's all good now.

Some good stuff traded in today.

Game Gear TV Tuner (loose) - actually works. We've had a few of these traded in over the past two-plus years, but either the antenna tip is broken off or it doesn't work at all.

Dreamcast Collection (complete) - Ah, a Dreamcast trade-in by someone who isn't a sports game nut for a change. Most of the fighting games were included (Marvel vs Capcom, SNK, SF Third Strike, SF Double Impact) this time.

GameCube Legend of Zelda Promotional (loose) - This is the 4-in-1 game, but just the loose disc. Always nice.

And if kept in good working order, it will continue to work fine ... until 2/17/09 when the US Government shuts off all analog TV broadcasts.

Thankfully you can rig one of those to make the Game Gear a tiny monitor...so it won't be COMPLETELY useless after Feb 2009.

You know, I remember back when the TV Tuner first came out I had a hell of a time finding one. I mean, a real problem. Nobody had it. My aunt eventually just bought me a portable TV and I never even thought about the TV Tuner again. In fact, I've never seen one in a store, period. Was that just an anomaly on my part?

I had one and didn't really have much trouble finding it at all (I bought it at a Circuit City express thing; whatever the name of the mini Circuit Cities was when they were in shopping malls), but it didn't work for shit, and I returned it after a week or so. On its own it could pull in maybe two channels (and very crappily, at that), and with an added on antenna that I bought at Radio Shack it could get maybe three, but a little better.

Lots of good stuff on this busy little Monday.

PS2 Fatal Frame (complete) - One of those "top 20" games that I always get asked about but rarely have in the store. Problem solved, at least until tomorrow.

SNES Rock 'n Roll Racing (hmm) - Oddly enough, the game was traded in loose, then a few hours later someone else traded in the box. Very odd considering that we don't get this on in very often.

SNES Secret of Mana (loose) - Nice.

XBox 360 Dark Sector (complete) - Just came out last week, first time traded in. That means I get to try it :)

Quite a lot of honorable mentions. A PS3 40GB, SNES Zelda Link to the Past, PS1 Star Ocean, even a decent Atari 2600 game, the Xonox double-ender Spike's Peak/Artillery Duel.

Did the second person trade in the box and only the box? Because if so then maybe they were testing to see if you'd end up paying out more by buying the parts of a game separately than if they all came in together. Though that's probably just my halfwit private eye alterego coming out.

My trade-in values are better than GameStop, though we're probably pretty close on a lot of things. Figure I only paid $2 for Gladius but it was beat to shit and didn't have a manual, also that's the cash value. I've been told by many customers that my cash values are better than GameStop (just down the road) credit values.

Onto today.

SNES Final Fight 2 (complete) - in great shape, I decided to keep this one for my collection. As some of you may know, when I take something home for my collection, something from my collection goes back to the store. It's part of my continual improvement of my collection whilst not taking up any more space nor robbing the store of inventory. Haven't decided what's going back yet, I have 'til tomorrow morning.

SNES Street Fighter II Turbo (complete) - traded in by the same guy as above, a 30-ish fellow who now has kids and is trading in his old stuff for Wii stuff for his kid.

Genesis Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2 (complete) - I can't get enough of these.

Genesis Golden Axe II (complete) - Haven't seen this one in awhile.

Genesis OutRun (complete) - Maybe not all that spectacular but it's been "uncommon" for me and it's one of my top 10 Genesis games so it gives me something I'm passionate about selling.

Genesis TMNT Hyperstone Heist (complete) - Nice... the Genesis games all came from the same person, very early in the day.

I do put the rare stuff in our eBay store (see user "digitalpress"). Common, popular games like this sell in days at the store, no reason to sell to the world when walk-in customers can benefit quickly. Sorry. If I were getting 20 Streets of Rage 2's a day I might think differently. But this stuff sells without the hassle of posting auctions or keeping up with an online inventory.

Today:

Atari 8-Bit Computer Collection (loose) - Someone too young (though not a kid - maybe early 20's) brought us a box of old school. The box included a whole bunch of Atari 2600 cartridges, nothing too stellar. What was more interesting was the Atari 400 and cartridges. The 400 was shot, but we took the stack of games which included popular titles like Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Ms. Pac-Man and one unusual one, Demon Attack.

GameCube Baten Kaitos Origins (complete) - Not particularly old or rare but it's a first time trade-in. Haven't seen it since we stocked it when it was new. Hey, we're getting old here, aren't we? Our store stocked some GameCube games when they were NEW!

GameCube Legend of Zelda Promotional Disc (complete) - You've seen me post this one a few times in the past few months. Frankie_Says_Relax hung out with me at the store today and speculated that this could be because all but one of the games on this disk are now available on Wii virtual console. Makes sense! I'll take more.

[EDIT: Late Addition] PC CD-ROM X-Com (sealed) - Spidey-sense was tingling when we took this one in, mainly because the PS1 version is so popular. Well guess what - the original X-Com game for PC has a nice little fanbase as well, and the one we took in today was factory sealed. Sweet!

I remember that used to be balls expensive for no reason. I really wish I had bought the strategy guide when I worked at EB, but my manager beat me to it. Does anyone know if the price has started to go down? It used to be 49.99 used at eb/gamestop.

Only by a small margin. I think it goes for around $40 or $35 at Gamestops.

A very nice collection, and well worth it for those who don't have a Wii ... but once Majora's Mask shows up on the VC, it's not really that attractive a prospect (at that price) to Wii owners who can download all those PLUS A Link to the Past.

Okay, now this has me thinking ... let's break down the price.

$40 for:

Legend of Zelda
Link to the Past
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask

VC Pricing

Legend of Zelda $5
Link to the Past $5
Ocarina of Time $10
Majora's Mask $10
Link to the Past $8

Total: $38

...yup cheaper cost for MORE on the VC.

Now we just wait for Majora's Mask and watch that disc start populate used bins in the wild.

Here's the funny thing. The price of that game is even too much for the market. A lot of Gamestops are liquidating GCN games. Few stores nearby have a whole lot left but what they're guaranteed to have are a few copies of Super Mario Sunshine, a handful of Metroid Primes and Wind Wakers, about 100 copies of Geist and at minimum 4 or 5 copies of the Zelda Collection each one not moving...ever. You'd think a game that's incredibly easy to find and never moves at the current price point would see a price cut. I don't get it.

A very nice collection, and well worth it for those who don't have a Wii ... but once Majora's Mask shows up on the VC, it's not really that attractive a prospect (at that price) to Wii owners who can download all those PLUS A Link to the Past.

Okay, now this has me thinking ... let's break down the price.

$40 for:

Legend of Zelda
Link to the Past
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask

VC Pricing

Legend of Zelda $5
Link to the Past $5
Ocarina of Time $10
Majora's Mask $10
Link to the Past $8

Total: $38

...yup cheaper cost for MORE on the VC.

Now we just wait for Majora's Mask and watch that disc start populate used bins in the wild.

Good point.

Busy busy Saturday, and one of the better trade-in days in recent memory.

TurboGrafx-16 Magical Chase (HuCard with Manual) - It's in a TG-16 case but the outer CD label is missing so I'm guessing it's using another more common game as its "housing". Manual and card are in great condition. Always nice to get the rarest game on any system traded in.

Dreamcast Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (CD with Manual) - Completely different seller but same concept. The back of the CD case is missing, the game is a disc and manual in a clear CD case. This game is enormously popular so it's cool to have it again in any condition.

Dreamcast Street Fighter III (CD with Manual) - Traded in by the same guy who brought us MvC2 above, same condition. And one more...

PS1 Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (CD with Manual) - Again, just short of complete but nice regardless.

Nintendo DS Hotel Dusk (complete) - Haven't seen this one very much. Looks like a pretty cool game, too.

3DO System (complete) - The FZ-1, complete in the box, everything in immaculate condition. I went through a long dry spell of 3DO stuff but suddenly find three of them in my store at once. That's good.

3DO Night Trap (complete) - The best (in terms of value) game in the lot traded in with the system above. This was a 40's-ish couple. The guy explained that they just moved into a new house, this stuff was left behind. I kept them in the store for a few minutes while I dazzled them with my mad Way of the Warrior skills. No Lucienne's Quest. Maybe next time!

Dear god! Magical Chase! The one Hucard that will evade me for years to come. I'd like to get my hands on that, but I'm saving for a 360; the last of the new gen systems I need. But man, thats incredible Mr. Digital press!

Rather light trade-in day, just one interesting item to report.

PS2 Time Crisis II (complete, 1 gun version) - I love getting these gun games in the store, especially when they're complete with the box, gun and the ever-elusive crossover cable (PS2). Great game, too.

I always had so much fun with lightgun games. A real shame that new TVs render them unplayable. I wonder if it's possible to put some kind of plastic screen or whatnot in front of an HDTV to get the guns to work.

Nope, the technology in HDTV (digital displays) prevents light guns which "flash" standard definition/CRT screens and read the "draw position" of where you're shooting from working correctly.

Light Gun positions need to be handeled by LED sensors/bars now (like the Wiimote or the Time Crisis 4 gun) ... thankfully this removes the need for headache-inducing "flashy screens" ... and in the case of games like House of the Dead 2 & 3 and Ghost Squad on Wii, the guns can be superbly accurate and fun when in a shell like the Nyko Perfect Shot.

Some good stuff today.

GameCube Panasonic Q (complete) - Ah, the chrome goodness of the Panasonic Q. This guy had been using the system as his region-free DVD player for a few years but now owns a Blu-Ray player (probably a PS3). Kept in great shape with the original box and documents.

Panasonic 3DO (complete) - The FZ-10 (flip top) version, complete in box. Same guy who traded in the Q, must have a thing for Panasonic hardware.

PS1 Marvel vs. Capcom (complete)
PS1 Pocket Fighters (complete)
PS1 Dragon Warrior VII (complete)
PS1 Street Fighter EX2 Plus (complete)

Man, I've been wanting one of these since they came out but I haven't been able to justify the high price. Luckily, the price is slowly dropping!

It's a Gamecube that can play DVDs and happens to look like a boombox, right? Hotness.

I had the day off. Raj's report:

Lots of trade-ins early in the day, a woman walked in "I have a lot of stuff" with two bags... then proceeded to go outside and bring in more. And more. And MORE. Fortunately I had forgot to put the cash drawer money in the safe last night, so Raj had some extra cash to work with early in the day.

She brought in loads of systems. N64, NES, Genesis, Dreamcast. All of these systems had the "popular" titles, though not really the rare ones. Examples: Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, GoldenEye, Mario Party 2, NES Mega Man, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! House of the Dead 2, Sonic Adventure, etc.

Genesis Castlevania Bloodlines (complete) - from another guy, later in the day. This is one of those "top ten" Genesis games in terms of what I'd LIKE to have in stocky but rarely do.

We also got 2 Nintendo DS Lite systems and even some interesting loose PS1 titles like that Disney Dance Dance Revolution.

Busy busy Saturday. Lots of trade-ins, here are some highlights.

Neo-Geo MVS Collection (loose) - A regular customer who is also a regular at many local auctions picked this up earlier in the week: a set of seven MVS carts, five of them Japanese (Samurai Shodown, Samurai Shodown II, Art of Fighting 2, World Heroes 2, and Last Blade 2) and two US (Fatal Fury and Fatal Fury 2). The US versions were in the original cardboard box with the mini-marquee. In this lot was also a US AES game, World Heroes 2 (complete).

XBox 360 Condemed 2 (complete) - First time traded in. I've been waiting for this one, so I can play it.

Atari Jaguar Collection (complete) - A loose Jaguar system accompanied by ten complete games, the highlights being Alien vs. Predator and Rayman. There were other good titles in there too, like Doom and Wolfenstein 3D.

And onto Sunday...

SNES Collection (mostly loose) - We've been pretty shorthanded on this system of late. Nice trade-ins today to help that, including a few Super Mario Worlds, A Super Mario All-Stars, and others.

Factory Sealed Games (um, new) - Traded in by a sealed games collector, also a member of this forum. Included Stella Deus PS2, Galaxy Force 2 PS2 (import), and Gitaroo Man PSP.
