1) Deus Ex (PC) - So underrated and underplayed it's criminal. This game has it all -- sweet gameplay, badass characters, incredible story, atmospheric levels, you name it. I play through this once a year (so that makes twice now, with the third coming up shortly), and every time it's a new experience.

2) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64) - I love this game. I don't know why, but I do. Perhaps it's the cool combat, the myriad of the side quests, the time travelling, endearing characters, or badass dungeons -- or maybe it's a combination of all of them.

3) Banjo Kazooie (Nintendo 64) - The best 3D platformer of all time. Soundly trounces Mario in every way.

4) Final Fantasy VIII (Playstation) - Everyone hates this game; I love it. The story is very intriguing, the characters compelling, and the GF system works great.

5) Age of Mythology/Age of Empires 2 (PC) - I was so addicted to AoM that my grades dropped. And nothing beats the satisfaction of unleashing a massive paladin charge in AoE2, followed by some trebuchet bombardment.

6) Shenmue (Dreamcast) - I played this game four years after its release. The graphics and incredible attention to detail are only rivaled by Deus Ex. The story kicks ass. The VF3-lite combat is a bit broken, but still manages to be fun. While it occasionally misses the mark, I still love this damn game to bits.

7) Donkey Kong Country (Super Nintendo) - My first home console game. What can I say, I love Rare. I love the damn characters, the levels, the crazy shit they come up with -- I love this damn game.

8) Halo 2 (Xbox) - I played this game for over 500 hours total. Dicking around online ranged from a blast to pure suckage, but the fact remains that for 6 - 8 months, I did not go one day (well, willingly at least) without playing this game.

9) Toy Commander (Dreamcast) - So innovative and original that I can look over the fact that this game is freakin' hard.

10) Final Fantasy IX (Playstation)- The characters are the best of the FF games. The setting kicks ass as well. The story seems a tad weaker than VIII's, as does the battle system, which is why it got dropped to #10. Still a classic.

1 - Metal Gear Solid (PSX) (Emotionally involving I thought. I've beat this game more than any other in my life)
2 - FFVII (PSX) (Only RPG I ever liked enough to beat, this was emotionally involving too)
3 - Starcraft (PC)
4 - Sonic the Hedgehog (GEN)
5 - Silent Hill (PSX) (When this came out, it was the scariest game I ever played. I'm amazed that all SH vg.s still put me on edge. Not to mention, they're all emotionally involving)
6 - Battlefield 2: MC (PS2) (Probably put more hours into this game than any other. Emotionally involving, never been pissed more than when the same person kills you 10 times in a row)
7 - Road Rash II (GEN)
8 - Resident Evil: CV (DC)
9 - Virtua Tennis (DC) (Only sports game I've ever had fun playing)
10 - Outlander (GEN) (I remember having tons of fun with this 10 years ago, haven't played since)

Yes, I like emotionally involved videogames. And if you're wondering, yes, I like dramatic films (21 Grams anybody?).

I always struggle like most people with this sort of thing, but not with number 1. I'll give it a go, though, since my wife is STILL SNORING.

I think a lot of people in the last few years have started giving Earthbound backlash due to pricing and as a reaction to its vocal online fanbase, but it's been my favorite game ever since I first played through it, having borrowed it from a buddy in 1995. Sometimes a game just resonates with you, and everything just feels right and captures your imagination, and Earthbound did so with me. I think that sometimes, when a game becomes somewhat mainstream, it loses its "cool" factor for some people. Seems like Symphony of the Night has had some similar backlash in recent years, with some people going so far as to call it the game that ruined Castlevania, but that game is just crazy good. I even went so far as to get every item in the game on a save file once on PS1, and have played through it on Saturn, PSP, and Xbox 360 as well. So much fun!
