We honestly believe that when it comes to SNK, they believe that nostalgia is job one. Why else would the company continue to keep one foot rooted in the past by re-releasing countless compilations of old releases in lieu of anything truly new? Not that there is anything wrong with that. The company has forgotten more about making fun games than most newcomers will ever know, polygons or not.
On that note, SNK's latest trip back in time comes care of an impressive collection of 16 different SNK faves, which skirt across the surface of the company's storied history like flat stone. Set for release for both the PlayStation 2 and PSP sometime during the first half of this year, the not-so-creatively dubbed SNK Arcade Classics: Volume 1 will include a bevy of early-gen fighters, such as the first World Heroes, Art of Fighting, and Samurai Shodown titles, as well as Fatal Fury, King of the Monsters, and King of Fighters '94. Beyond fighting games, however, SNK has put together a rather eclectic mix from other genres, with action titles like Top Hunter, Last Resort, Shock Troopers, Sengoku, and Burning Fight, as well as sports entries Baseball Stars 2, Neo Turf Masters, and Super Sidekicks 3. And of course, where would any SNK tribute be without the original Metal Slug and Magician Lord? Nowhere, that's where, so it's a good thing it includes those as well.
Not a bad salvo for the first volume, which has us already wondering what games should make the cut for what we hope will be a second collection soon to follow. What SNK greats would you like to see make a return?

How exactly do you think these compilations are made? Reworked from the original source code? Emulated using something programmed in-house? Or emulated using a licensed copy of something otherwise freely available for PCs?

Emulated using something programmed in-house?
I know some companies are fond of farming out emulation tasks to Digital Eclipse (http://www.digitaleclipse.com/) and the like, but I don't think SNK does for most of their NeoGeo packs. At least, I'm under the impression that they do almost all of their neo geo emulation in house. Though they had Terminal Reality (http://www.terminalreality.com/) do the Metal Slug pack, and they were caught red handed using bootleg dumps (http://jaysmith2000.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=9159) in the PSP version.Hamster (http://www.hamster.co.jp/orga/) likes jacking MAME code, does a shitty job of porting it, and doesn't even try to hide it.

Do we know which branch of SNKP is developing this? If it's their Japanese branch (which handles all the fighting series compilations), then they'll probably be doing the coding/emulating themselves. If it's their USA branch, who was responsible for Metal Slug Anthology, then expect it to be farmed out to another party, and another possibility of input lag...

And they're bringing out a Samurai Shodown pack too so we don't need the first one in this.

Shock Troopers = sold to me.
Ditto.
If this is true I might then seriously get rid of my 2-Slot like I had been planning on (but that fell through for a number of reasons), as I simply cannot part with my arcade MVS because of this game, part II and NAM-1975 alone. Of course, I didn't see Shock Troopers 2 mentioned nor pre Neo-Geo stuff like IKARI 1-3, Guevara / Guerrilla War, Time Soldiers, and P.O.W. If that was on like a volume three I'd piss the elixir of life and gladly be a wanted man from those needing eternal youth. Still though, I'm damn glad to see SNKP actually bringing out the titles of games that have long deserved to be played on more current consoles.

SNK P's been farming out porting duties to a company called G1M2 (http://www.g1m2.com/). They worked on both the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury anthologies, and they're VERY WELL DONE. I've only found -a single glitch- in AOF1, the rest of the games are pretty much flawless. NO load times at all.
Of course, they also don't have any extras at all.
Sweet, I'm also looking forward to World Heroes Anthology :D
Wonder if that will be budget or not. If not, I'll gladly spend $50 for it -- only "current gen" release that I would do so for.
All their latest releases (AOF Anthology, FFBA Volume 1, KOF XI and NGBC) have had a $15 MSRP. I think they're keeping that price point for the upcoming themed collections such as World Heroes, but I wouldn't mind paying $25 for THIS particular collection.
The only bad thing about these compilations? NO EXTRAS other than arranged music. They're very barebones.
Also, to those who're complaining about some games being repeats - maybe they're adding them so people get interested in the other games...

Excellent... Is there a release date on this yet, or is this another SNK Playmore USA 'at some point in the future' thing(a la the Samurai Shodown collection)?
Even at forty bucks this is a pretty good deal, for Magician Lord, Top Hunter and Sengoku alone.

My OCD can't handle this. With series compilations for Metal Slug, Art of Fighting, World Heroes, Fatal Fury, etc., there's a lot of redundancy. It seems like SNK can't decide how to divvy up their back catalog of games.

Wow! I totally missed this thread yesterday!
(I'm sorry DP Servbot, I'll never neglect your posts again *hugs*)
This is awesome news ... and it's actually really interesting that they've included some games that are in other anthologies ... I'm not opposed to it, especially since Metal Slug Anthology is pretty hard to come by on PS2 these days.
It'll also be nice if I'm sitting around with friends to hop from a game of Fatal Fury to a game of Metal Slug to a game of Magician Lord without changing discs (or game systems)!!
Neo Mr. Do would be a nice inclusion on this one .... and if it's not, on a 2nd Anthology. Please!

Man I had forgotten all about that game. THAT was the one I had intended to buy for my MVS Cab a few years back. In an unrelated (yet related) mention, "thanks" for the remind. I also wouldn't mind seeing that on the Anthology / Compiler series of discs either. Though to this day my fave for the MR.DO! games is the original one. Shoot I hope, Twinkle Star Sprites and The Super Spy makes it onto one of the anthology discs as well.

As someone who never had a Neo Geo (and won't buy one), I love these SNK compilations. Keep 'em coming guys.
I've only found -a single glitch- in AOF1
Details??
Kitsune Sniper

Details??
The AOF1 glitch?
You know when the game's running its attract mode... the way the title screen slides down from the bottom? It glitches right then and there. Instead of doing it smoothly, it just kinda freezes for a bit, skips some animation, and locks into place as it normally would. I'll upload a video of this glitch when I have a chance.
As I mentioned before, that is the only glitch I've found. Maybe a little tiny bit of slowdown, but that's it.
Oh, there's another, little known compilation coming out in Japan. The title? Sunsoft Collection. The games? Waku Waku 7 and Galaxy Fight. Too bad there's been very little information about the title since it was announced last year...

#1> Yeah, I always looked at SHOCK TROOPERS as the fully realized execution of what Capcom's Battlefield of the Wolf 2: MERCS started but fell just short of, seeing as how Saurus basically made Mercs 2.5 and all.
#2> Milky's name is still Milky in the USA. I've had three different MVS carts of it, the first being a VIC-A Korean one, the second a Japanese one and the current one is a US one... all have the same names for characters. I can't see the PS2 version having her renamed "Blondie" or something stupid like that.

I am completely down with this one. Purchased the second I see it on store shelves. Great to see Magician Lord again. I never thought I would see it in a compilation, as it was never really considered a "hit" so to speak. It is one of my favorite Neo-Geo titles...mainly due to teh fact that it was the first (along with Ninja Combat) cart I actually purchased for the amazing low price of $199.99 :) I used to bring the memory card over to fun'n'games, get past the extremely hard parts there, and continue back home. Those were the days....

This is such a deal. I could complain that some of the games are on already-existing compilations... but I won't do that because of effing SHOCK TROOPERS. Very nice collection, though some of the audio emulation is a bit wonky.
voices and sound effects in Samurai Shodown are VERY soft compared to the music audio.
I'm a bit cheesed off that the PSP version is $30 :bad-words:

Does this game support the D-Pad? I have a Sega Saturn controller that works with the PS2, that i imported from Japan. It works with the Street Fighter Collections, but it did not work with the Mega Man Anniversary Collection :( I have not tried it with the Sega Genesis Collection, but i hope it works with this Collection.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work with a d-pad, I'm sure that Mega Man collection does work with one. Just some games won't recognize the controller unless its analog, even if the option of using d-pad controls exist. I've encountered a few GameCube titles that do the same thing when using my Hori digital controller.
I wouldn't worry about this game, I'm sure they're expecting that people will want to use controllers like that one and arcade sticks.
