Remember the ones that looked like they were photographs of sculptures? Super Mario Bros. 2, Dr. Mario, and SMB3 are the ones that spring readily to mind. No need for that kind of budget anymore, I suppose.

That all changed with issue 66: Donkey Kong Country. :monkey:

I remember being confused by the cover of issue 1 because Mario's colors were all wrong. I do like the clay sculptures though.

One of the web sites I used to compile the list is awesome. It shows every cover:

Ah, issue #114. That issue is literally a highlight of the 90s for me. I remember the exact time I got it and exactly where I read it :-D

Heh, even before I scrolled up to see what one that was, I had a feeling it would be Ocarina of Time.

It's kinda weird to thinking I'm getting close to having missed out on 100 issues at this point. Although, considering how the quality went downhill, I'm probably not missing much at all. My last issue is 131, which was when I lost interest and let my subscription run out. I don't think I ever even read that one. It's one of my worst condition issues. I seem to recall having it kicking around my bedroom floor for weeks. :P I guess that shows how little I cared at that point. I'm glad my subscription lasted that long, though, because just two issues prior I had some of my art printed. It's a little embarrassing because the art wasn't so hot, but it's still neat nonetheless. Granted, my art looked like a masterpiece in comparison because they had started to print some horrendous envelope art those days. That's when you really know the magazine was catering to the elementary school age Pokemon fans when all the art looked like it was done by 5-year-olds. But I digress.

I still have the first eight issues to picked up at some point, and when I finally have read everything I own and those eight, I'll probably start looking into getting those later issues. I suppose I should at least finish off the N64 era. I'd kinda like to see the coverage of stuff like Kirby 64, Paper Mario, and Majora's Mask.

I bought a couple of issues after my subscription ran out, so I lost track of what the last issue I bought was. It was definitely before Pokemon and the advertisements, though. It was also when it started to become so much easier to find in my area. For some reason, for the longest time no one seemed to carry it, so for a while it seemed like kind of a big deal that I could go out and just buy whatever issue I wanted.

If you look around torrent sites, there's a torrent that contains all of the player guides, a few of the Fun Club issues and the first 175 or so issues of Nintendo Power. I downloaded and kept most of it - up through the SNES era, that is.

I downloaded that about a year ago. It's a great project and I appreciate all of the time and effort that has been put into it, but a lot of my Nintendo Power issues were in better condition! Most of my issues and guides were perfect. If I hadn't sold them, I would've scanned them and contributed to the project.

I'm not complaining though. It's nice having a digitized collection instead of hundreds of pounds worth of magazines taking up space!

According to the Retromags.com wiki (http://retromags.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page), Little League Baseball was mentioned in Nintendo Power issue 14 (http://retromags.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nintendo_Power_Issue_014). However, the poster in that issue was for Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.

The cover of issue 9 features Tetris, but the boy is holding an NES Max controller, not a Game Boy. Thus, issue 27 is the first to feature a Game Boy game: Mega Man in Dr. Wily's Revenge.

I can only find two of the four covers (see attached).

The characters dont have names. They are the 4 races you get to choose at the begning of the game. So each cover is one of the races :

Thanks! I'd never heard of MadWorld before, but I just looked it up and it looks very interesting...and ridiculously violent. From what I've seen, the art direction is amazing, but I can't tell if the game is supposed to be serious or silly. Either way, Sega might have a hit on its hands.

True, but even with all of the extra text on the newsstand version, I bet the overall design is still better than the typical Photoshop feathered collage mess that adorns many video game cases and magazine covers.

Very nice list! Thanks for posting it. You invested some serious work there!

Two proposals:

I didn't go through the entire list yet, but I think you might change entry 015. The guide for Ninja Gaiden II does not have the subtitle ("Dark Sword of Chaos") of the game on the cover, so I wouldn't list it as such. It is a guide with an official title and not 'just' a cover of a magazine which gives you more leeway to list game titles.

I'd also make a note that the volume numbers from 001 to 0012, and 014, are inofficial. We only use these volume numbers for the purpose of a convenient overwiew. The first official volume number for a regular magazine was volume 16. Oddly enough, the bimonthly guides got official volume numbers earlier than the regular mags. (starting with the SMB 3 guide as volume 13)

Looking through the list I almost regret that I didn't renew my subscription after 18 years when Nintendo didn't publish the mag anymore.

I have a collection from volume 1 to 213, and the first 100 issues are minty mint since I never used them and stored them right away. (Always had two subscriptions since each subscription came with a free guide anyway)

NP was a great mag! I've never enjoyed a game mag so much since NP during the NES and SNES eras.
