View Full Version : Uh-Ohkami: Capcom botches Okami Wii box art, inadvertently advertises IGN [Joystiq]

With all the work that goes into the designing, writing, and programming of a game (especially for a title as hotly anticipated as Capcom's waggle-infused port of the PS2 under-appreciated gem Okami (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Okami/)), we assumed that there would be one person at every video game publisher who would give the final retail packaging a once-over, keeping a keen eye out for any typos, printing errors, or hidden watermarks from popular video game news sites (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=276809&page=4#162). Then again, maybe that's just us.
As is the unfortunate case with the Wii Okami box art -- NeoGAF user Bob Digi discovered that right above a permanent "sticker" promoting the game's high score in Play magazine (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/Xisiqomelir/00001-3.jpg) (an unsightly blemish in its own right) sits a fairly clear IGN watermark, the result of the artwork's background being photoshopped from an image on IGN's Okami PS2 site (http://ps2.ign.com/dor/objects/678618/okami/images/okami-20070130074341824.html). Then again, perhaps the game underwent some serious changes in its Nintendo transition, and now features protagonist Amaterasu traveling throughout feudal Japan, devouring the logos of major gaming news sites.

Wow, as if IGN didn't need enough publicity. I wonder when IGN will pick up the story. A quick check on their message boards shows that no one has realized this.

I didn't either until I went to ign.com and glanced at their graphic logo. It's like a bullseye with a saturn ring. Very distinctive once I realized what it was I was looking for.

There are several threads on the IGN Wii General Boards about it. I'd link you to the main one, but I got banned for mentioning that I had finished The World Ends With You already (even though someone else in the same thread did so before me and wasn't even warned...).

If you click on the link about the sticker you can see it much better. I don't have an actual copy so I can't verify, but I can definitely see it in the pics above.

Actually... the way the logo is positioned, it looks like Amaterasu is trying to eat it. So maybe that's a subliminal statement! :D

Guilty as charged. :) I just don't have the $40 extra to give Square-Enix for a DS game these days. I'm not trying to justify downloading games or anything, I know it's not "right". The thing is though, I didn't even say that I had downloaded it in my IGN post. The game has been out in Europe for almost a week now; how were they to know if I had imported it or downloaded it?

As I said, quick check through. I only checked the Okami board.
Anyway, I tried to look to see it for myself at Target, but of course they didn't have it there.

That picture in the first post is shit.
I did check copies at GameStop today. It indeed does have the watermark. Quite an interesting thing that either Capcom's art department has a 0 budget, or that they didn't do the cover for the game. I'll have to snag one now just cause.

Not as bad a goof as Sony posting images of PGR on their site to promote Gran Turismo... but, it's pretty damn close.
I believe the Wii port of Okami was handled outside of Capcom by another dev. I guess they just couldn't be bothered to email and ask for some art resources from Capcom for the box art so... they just "borrowed" an image from IGN. :) Way to go geniuses!

So silly. Why would they even use such a low-res image for a print cover. If it has a water mark on it, it couldn't have been that big. One call to an art department should have prevented this. Hell, they should already have had access to at least a press FTP or something.

seriously, what the hell
i need to shop hidden dicks into all the images on the CV Dungeon & Contra HQ, yes...wait, that's Konami and they wouldn't do something so stupid (I hope).

It doesn't matter that Ready at Dawn did the port (well other than they somehow managed to nullify the potential awesomeness of the port by botching the controls, completely negating the entire point of going to the Wii in the first place) because Capcom still published it and handled all of the nitty gritty like the packaging, promotion, etc. Someone at Capcom fucked up hard.
But hey, some people want widescreen support and the ability to skip cutscenes enough to put up with the crummy control scheme. Hopefully it sells well enough to warrant yet another rerelease on another platform at some point that finally clears up all of the technical quirks.

Ok, Capcom US effed it. I can't help but think about a "Real Men of Genius" ad featuring "Lazy Video Game Retail Box Art Designers!" to mark the joyous occasion? :p
On a side note, I knew a real winner of a guy (complete sarcasm) when I attended TSU in Houston. His dream job and why he was schooling there was to work at Capcom USA. I bet he is a responsible party to this, somehow. That is, if he even got in the front door. LOL

I gave this a look yesterday and found the watermark to be highly visible. It's right above the red sticker on the cover.
I even asked some non-gaming minded folks what they saw, and they each saw the IGN logo without knowing what exactly it stood for.
Kinda funny, I think.

In case anyone is interested, they're offering replacements now.

Also, I took a peek at the strategy guide and it has the watermark as well.

Nope. Capcom just decided not to bother from what I gather. They have, however, started sending out new batches of the game to retailers with a corrected insert.

I contacted them asking for a corrected insert after the window to do so closed. They refused, which I understand, but what bothered me is that they were total pricks in their email. I can't remember exactly what it said now, but it did leave a sour taste in my mouth.
I expect more from Capcom.

they supposedly shipped them out twice. The first time, and then the second time they said "sorry for not really shipping them out" and would make it a double sided cover with the original fixed insert on the other side.
Still haven't gotten mine :| I doubt they're gonna ship em out.

I just sent out e-mails to Joystiq and a couple other news sites asking if they could do a follow-up story since Capcom used them to spread false info in August about the inserts shipping. Hopefully these guys can apply some pressure to at least get some honesty out of Capcom for once on this issue.

If Capcom lied, that's wrong.
However, is getting a replacement cover really that big a deal? It's not like the discs were defective.

You're right - it's not the end of the world, but it's a matter of corporate responsibility.
If they weren't going to release the covers - that's fine, like I said it's not the end of the world, but if they're not going to do it, they shouldn't say that they're going to do it.

it's real dick to say that they've sent them and get our hopes up when really they ditched hoping we forget :|
At least say that your not going to anymore.

strange I was wondering why I never got it.
I guess Capcom was planning on doing this but scrapped it after wasting everyone's time.
Okami didn't bring in near enough sales as they wanted so they basically abandoned anything that cost them money over it.

It's a sad day when something sells as well as Okami did and it's still considered a failure, but considering how grossly over budget they let the game run...well, I guess it's understandable. At least the Wii version was done on the cheap and they're pulling in extra money from rereleasing the PS2 version under the Greatest Hits line.

If the Wii version of Okami had been released at $29.99, I think it would've sold far better. I feel the same way about Boom Blox and de Blob, too. It's not like these games are Super Mario Galaxy or Metal Gear Solid IV. $40 or $50 for puzzle games and ports of old PS2 games is a little much. $30...perfect.

Strongly agree. $30 seems like the perfect price point for games of this type since it's low enough that if you happen to already own the game on another console, you might actually pick it up on the Wii to take advantage of the different controls.

Fully agree as well, I will NOT pay 50.00 for Boom Blox despite the fact that I really want it. A puzzle game for 50.00 just seems absurd in this day and age.

got mine too, and so did mine friend. Looks like they're finally shipping them out.
