I saw that I was nearing my 2000th post, so I wanted to do something special. As some of you know I finished finding all released Sega Genesis games awhile ago(98% in the wild). After using online forums and evilbay to tie up loose ends, I now have EVERY GAME BOXED that was released for the system. I also have taken some pics of my SEGA WALL in my game room. I have alot more in my game room, but I take pride the most with this accomplishment. It has taken me about 13 years to finish this quest. I am only missing 15 manuals from a CIB set. I do have a boxed Miracle, but I dont have a World Championship Cart II or Outback Joey, as I dont consider that part of a Genesis released game set. I would like to thank all the countless people(and awsome forum members) who have helped me on the way. A special thanks to PRGE members who espically went out of their way for my passionate quest on this one(espically Coreys 429) Enjoy the pics :)

UPDATE: After another passive three years of collecting I have been able to complete my CIB Genesis Collection, acquire Outback Joey with manual. It has been fun. I have enjoyed it immensely. Thanks to all who have helped me!

13 years, eh? Dang, you truly deserve this "CONGRATS!"

Great pictures, nice to look at, wonderful collection, together with the SNES 2D gaming at its best.

16 bit gaming is one of the highlights of videogame history, and you have a good chunk of it right there at your walls. Great, that is why we collect.

Impressive, I'm at the high 400s on mine (close to 400 boxed or at least that many boxes as some I don't have the games for yet) and could easily see it taking me years longer to complete as I go through phases of how actively I'm hunting for genesis games and I doubt I'll find much in the next year after I move unless Alaska has an unusually high concentration of game for me to find.

I'm not sure which impresses me more, that you have a complete US collection or that you stuck with it for 13 yrs. Congrats, that's pretty awesome!
My nowhere near complete Genesis collection mixes in a little bit of PAL and Japanese exclusives. Did you ever have any interest in picking any of those up or have you already?

My favorite Genesis game is Herzog Zwei, followed by a close second to Master of Monsters. My Herzog Zwei I got from all people....my mom on a clearance sale back when it was released(89-90). Since I sold off my original sega stuff sometime in 95(sketchy college years), I started recollecting the stuff as I was finding it everywhere for cheap. It truly has been awsome to collect, and I just kept with it. For all collectors out there who are like me... on a tight budget...patience pays off. I have had to move twice(500 mile move), fight though unemployment, and even go though a cancer scare with my wife(breast cancer). I feel very fortunate to have gotten what I have. I will probably never have the "holy grails" of Geneiss, but after all, I started collecting it because it was affordable. For my next set of games, I am going for either Game Gear(carts only), or 7800. I am also close on some others, but am passively collecting for all. I just collect at a pace that is fun, affordable and enjoyable. I try to get everything in the wild, which means that there will be 6 months of droughts where I wont find anything. Craigslist is awsome, and has rekindled my belief that there is alot more older video games out there than I first imagined.

If I could have one CIB collection and didn't care about value, this would be it. I've always loved the way the cases looked, and when I was little I thought it would be so cool to have a full shelf of them. Big big BIG congratulations on that collection. I also would like to salute you for doing it the hard way. Lots of the kids today just buy up a whole set in less than a year on ebay. Money can make a collection too easily IMO. You put in the time, and it paid off. I don't know if I would be able to stick it out for 13 years!

Semi off-topic question: it is my understanding that some games were released in both cases and boxes. Do you collect both, and is there a list somewhere of what games were released in what form? The reason I ask, I have a CIB Crusader of Centy, but I would love to have it in a case instead if that was possible.

Thank you for the compliments. I know that Majesco bought the rights to reprint alot of games in cardboard cases. I dont have a list but I pick them up when I see them. Also it appears that several Mega Hits were made, games with yellow striped greatest hits packaging in cardboard boxes. As far as I know, Crusader of Centy was cardboard box only. A possible suggestion is to use the site "The Cover Project" to possibly make your Crusader of Centy box custom. On a side note, that was my last box I needed for my set. Great Game.

On a another side note, I hate the cardboard packaging, and it fragile state compared to the ultra durable plastic boxes. One thing about collecting and moving alot...I never had to worry about my sega genesis cases!

Oddly enough, when I decided to collect for the Genesis Centy was the first game I got. And yeah, I've thought of making my own case insert, but I have yet to scan my box. I'm with you, I hate the boxes and absolutely love the cases.

I always wanted Centy, but I haven't bought it so far. It is on my list. I have 200+ Genesis games, plus 32x/cd stuff, but no room for boxes. Well, I do have this box in my closet, but I digress... I still want about 150 more, which would put me at around half of the total games released in the US. I can't imagine ever buying everything, but I applaud your efforts. I too owned and sold my Genesis before starting my collection in earnest. It's only recently I've managed to snag every game I owned as a child. My favorite game is probably Toejam and Earl or Castlevania Bloodlines. I love all the funny, under the radar games like Rolo (I have the Japanese version complete, oddly enough), decap attack and Haunted too.

Part of the appeal to me too, beyond nostalgia is how cheap the Genesis games seem to be. I rarely average over $5 a game, and a lot of good games I've bought even cheaper. In the last three or four years I've bought Earthworm jim 1+2, Phantasy Star 3, After Burner 2, Shadowrun, Road Rash 3 and Space Invaders 91 for $3 a piece in the wild. I think Time Killers cost me $5. Ebay can be nice too, but in the wild seems to be more fun, and ultimately cheaper albeit hit or miss. A few years ago I tried to buy Aero the Acrobat on ebay for $4 with shipping, and ended up with Aero 2, which I needed anyway. Now if only I could find Zero...

I know a lot of people don't count Outback Joey, or think it was unreleased, but the item was sold at the very least, in the US, for $299.96 at Sportsmart. I know because the box I just got has the sticker right on it. It's officially licensed, just brutally hard to find.

Nice collection! The best part about it is 13 years, 98% in the wild. A lot of those games have been with you through thick and thin and I'll bet you have a ton of good stories to go along with it too. It is really amazing to find almost all of those games in the wild, I can only imagine your travels over the past decade or so.

Oh yeah, welcome to the club.

I dont count it personally and here is why:

It actually cant be played on a genesis system without additional hardware. The hardware is based on Sega Genesis, but you need the hardware to play the training game. It may be liscensed, but it is not a game that can be played on the genesis hardware alone. I could go on and on, but this is not the place.

For those who have the inside connections, or the money or both to get the holy grail games, that is great for you and congrats. This post was a celebration of what I personally have achieved, and for that I am grateful for the people who have helped me get there.

Everybody is going to have their opinion of what should and shouldnt be considered in a final set. This post should not be used to argue what is to be considered in the final set.

With that being said, thanks to all who have supported me and my quest!

Hard to discount an officially licensed Genesis game. You can't play Steel Battalion (sp) without the controller for Xbox, but that counts in a heartbeat.

Although even if it is not directed towards me, the "inside connections", "money" comments are a bit tiring on these forums. I can't say how many times I have seen people say "If I only had the money" "If I only had the connections", etc.

If you spend time scouring/scavenging flea markets, thrifts, Craig's List, and whatever looking for stuff, you can find just as much time to scour the web and talk to people, or find things that way. Everyone thinks all the guys with large collections have lots of money. If someone walks into your house and sees thousands of games, regardless of what you tell them, they'll think you're rich.

John congrats on your set, I did not mean to go off topic, but those remarks can be deemed a bit testy because it discounts a lot of work people have done.

This is a judgement-call thing in my eyes and not really the sort of thing to go spouting off personal attacks about.

We'll always look at these things differently. Myself, I start to stop caring when things are not actively advertised to the general public. I would fully expect a Miracle in a complete NES collection but not necessarily a Racermate.

I did not mean to put a negative plug in, but I was a little bothered I saw someone comes on a post and start questioning a complete set without a thanks or congrats. I apologize, as I have the upmost respect for you and what you have accomplished. We all have different opinions on what is in a complete set of US games. It does not make any of us wrong. Consider this my public apology, I just sometimes feel that people who eek out a large collections sometimes get nitpicked for little details that takes away from the accomplishment. It is tough to collect large complete sets these days, way harder than it has been in years. Even with the internet and savy shopping, it can be tough for many.

Why would he thank you? Why would anybody? Again, my post about people driving up prices on games...

And yes, I'm aware I'm being a hypocrite. I've just started to think people who collect, say, coins and do it for investment purposes and don't claim anything else are easier to stomach, really.

You know, I try to be as polite as I can to others on this site. There is enough self consumed selfish collectors in the world, and I try not be one of them. I joined this site to collect, share, and collaborate with others in peace. If somebody posts an accomplishment, then I do want to thank them for their accomplishments. Nobody owes me anything, however it is a courtesy to keep things civil on a post that is supposed to celebrate an accomplishment. I dont know why there is this hostility, I just wish you a great day :)

I just stopped by to give you another perspective. It took me only a few thousand dollars to gain it - I like to give people who share this perspective my thanks for keeping game prices low. I think saving other people their money and disillusioning them about game collecting to be the best assistance one can give.

I'm not saying you're certain to end up like the other highly visible game collectors who ended up trying to ditch their whole collection on eBay, or accusing you of having things poorly planned out from a financial standpoint...but experience shows it's likely to happen.

I have been collecting for over 15 years...and have no intentions of EVER selling my collection. I dont collect for the value, nor to resell. I can see you point, as I know what type of person you are talking about. Collect hardcore on a budget....sell for max profit. I am not one of those. Many here can vouch I am a long time collector....hell it took me 13 years to complete this set. No money could ever replace that accomplishment. Also, I am part of NWCGE that put on yearly game shows...for zero profit. I also write a free newletter quarterly called the Northwest gamer...for free. Bottom line is that I have collected this for the sole purpose of loving it, and will continue to love it till the day I die.

Congrats!

Not easy to finish a collection but when it comes to a sega system (especially a genesis one) makes it even sweeter. Grew up with genesis. Your right, much easier to find sega games back in wild, especially back in day cause of the boxes. Complete set here also, just need 2 manuals. Hard to find in the wild now but I look at evilbay every once in a while. Where did you find most in the wild, usual suspects like funcoland, blockbuster, garage sales etc?

As for the outback joey, all depends on what you want to consider complete. I look at is an accessory with a game. Its kinda unique to hook it all up but the game is somewhat dull. Hadn't played it on over six months but set it up again after receiving emails to sell the complete system. Maybe I should thank gamesniped.com for all the unwanted attention LOL

I have to ask what two manuals do you need?

Place where I found the most sega games? Bog Bean in Redding California. The thing is, they always have 20 to 30 boxed sega games for about $3 to $4. Over ten years, that really adds up(I moved about 3 years ago to Washington). When I first starting going there, I got games for $1.50 :)

The other place I got alot of games was from used game stores from Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon....all in person for the most part. Every time I would go on a trip, I would find used game stores and bring my "Nerd Binder". Patience paid off.

I need crusader of centy and joshua. The last 2 manuals. I've been looking on ebay on and off. Something will pop up hopefully, that's how I found the crossfire manual a few weeks ago. Hard to find them in wild now. Funny you mention the nerd binder because that's what I used when I was looking for games and I would have written down if I need the manual, box or catridge for the system. Some of these old game stores knew me as the guy with the list.

As for Outback Joey, I'm the one who won that auction that they have on sega-16.com. The system basically a genesis with an ugly plastic cover. Its funny to set up and play but like I said before, the gameplay is boring and repetitive.

Congrats on getting outback. Just curious if the heartbeat system can play other normal sega genesis games. Does it have a standard port for a normal 9 pin controller? Funny that you mention Crusader of Centy. That was the last box I needed. I got lucky with Joshua and bought it for $3 at a Funcoland 5+ years ago. Finding Crusader complete is getting a little harder these days. I passed on so many, but like you said...it will pop up complete. I paid $40 for mine, which is about the going price for one CIB.

As for my nerd binder, I just keep revising it and using it. It has never let me down, and helps me keep my stuff together. I plan on writing down all my serial #s of my game systems eventually, but like anything, it just takes so much dang time. I know for a fact that I would have overpassed stuff if I didnt have it handy.

i'll have to get the Outback joey system from game closet and set it up. I put it away when I sold my exercise bike (rather ride real bike than fake). I never thought of connecting another game for it. Used it to kill time while on the bike. But found it was more fun to just play the ds or nomad than that game. Plus running out of room in room of doom with all the different systems.

As for the 2 manuals, not looking for the boxes. Sega boxes are very sturdy and luckily have been able to find them all and even extras and inserts in case any boxes get damaged by mistake. Don't want to waste all that money buying a complete game and then selling my boxed copy, seems pointless. Maybe one day I'll have to do that if I can't find it. I miss funcoland, gamestop had to ruin it and buy them out and turn them into another souless clone, ughhh

I had quite a hard time finding the crusader manual separately. In the end I just had to settle on buying a complete one. I would recommend just buying the game now if you found it complete for the manual. As time goes on, the ones you are looking for are just going to be more expensive to get, and harder to find. If you are patient, one might surface with some luck, but it might take a long time.

It's funny that you two had such trouble with the Crusader manual--I bought the manual only on eBay maybe a year ago for like $6 or something. It was a proper auction, too; no buy it now or any of that nonsense.

Sometimes you get lucky like that. I've found pretty good manuals from some ebay stores. Once in a while I'll check them out, you never know what you find. Only problem is now everyone is a high end seller. Boxes and manuals that were usually sold for $1 or $2 for genesis and snes now have buy it nows of $5 for commons and even $45 for castlevania X Those prices don't even include the shipping. Ridiculous cheaper to buy the game or complete sometimes.

I've got to know, how many titles in total? Oh yeah, where can I get a list?

hey it is amazing. great job. but I would advice you to check out the PAL only megadrive games to peps up your collection. I dare you find them in the wild mate. :)

infogrames games like The Smurfs, Spirou and Tintin. These are comic classics in Europe.

by the way, is there a list of such games? (list of exclusively PAL games)

and will continue to love it till the day I die.

that day, prices will drop :wink 2:

just have a go at you. hope it never happens and besides it is just offer/demand. as the genesis generation starts earning lots of money and start collecting (me), prices are doomed to go up.

Those PAL games are great. Some good shooters and platform games that were translated into english but never released in the USA. Go figure. You can do what I did, I bought all the PAL games that weren't released in the USA. Good way to fill up collection plus interesting games. Just sucks right now that dollar is weak and shipping will kill you, especially from England
PS Don't forget to try Alien Soldier, Zero Wing (I know it's played out) and Asterix to name a few

Asterix and the Great Rescue was released in the US

however
they made one last Asterix game, only in Europe, Asterix and the power of the Gods

trying to find Alien Soldier. Never heard about it before and they say it is like Gunstar heroes! :)))

Zero Wing is findable.
what are other very good PAL only games?
