This is almost a RRM thread (I started one like this at the old Ezboard but I couldn't find it...dammit) instead of hijacking the Pac-Man Fever thread I decided to start a new one...

Akrobatik - "Exterminator"
"Dinner's Served like pressing all 4 Turbo buttons"
an NBA Street reference, in case you didn't know.

GZA/Genius - "Investigative Reports" (i think...)
"I'm playing a deadly game with just 1 man left"

Raekwon - (I don't remember the song)
"I'll stomp your ass like that cat Blanka"

Ice Cube - "Doing Dumb S**t"
"A little punked-out kid playing Space Invaders" (talking about himself ^^)

Public Enemy - "What Side You On"(?)
"Good enough to grow no endo/threw it out the window/along with the Super Nintendo"

Deltron 3030 - "3030"
I can't remember it exactly, but there is a part where Del raps about being "blessed with Espers"

Ice Cube - (I don't remember the song)
"It's on like Donkey Kong" (cheap, I know, but it's something ^^)

Freezepop - Amplitude(?)
Freezepop's new song in the game Amplitude thanks all their fans (since most people became fans due to "Science Genius Girl" in FreQuency) notable is the line that says "You made your FreQ so chic!"

Whose Line is it Anyway...Wayne Brady sang a song to the editor-in-chief of Gamespy about video games...he managed to use Pong, Donkey Kong, Jungle Hunt, Sega, Super Mario, and a few other things.

Jump Around - House of Pain
"Tried to play me out like as if my name was Sega"

Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Human Video Game
<no quote, the whole song is about arcades and specifically Donkey Kong>

Ludacris - Roll Out
<something about a ps2 up in the ride>
(I don't know much of this guy, just that I hear this song on the radio too often)

I think it is an Outkast song that says "sorry like Atari and cousin to Coleco"

Limp Bizkit has some sound effect that I swear sound like the music in Streets of Rage II

Unfortunately saw the first show of their Disco Volante tour at First Ave., they weren't happy about the tech. difficulties. Same tech. difficulties for California tour, BUT AWESOME SHOW. I'll never forget it. I'm seeing Tomahawk on May 12th... \^_^/

Allow me to bust out some rhymes here in this exclusive:
Santulli's ATARI EDITION

Sigue Sigue Sputnik (really over-the-top electronic rock band "from the future" in the 80's) had a great song called "Atari Baby".

There's a band out there called "Atari Teenage Riot", and they have lots of songs with Atari references in 'em.

The Fugees "Fu-Gee-La":
Fake bullets can't scar me
I can smell the weak out like safari
Play you out like Atari
Sacrifice you Hari Kari

Big Daddy Kane "On the Bugged Tip":
Touch the young ladies make their blood pressure boil.
I got the ...hmm...hiccups, excuse me, sorry.
Score a 100 Gs every time I play Atari.
Put a hole in the Old Gold, blast the Bacardi.

Outkast "Skew it on the Bar B":
The common denominator the nigga numerator
Never know who the hater niggaz cater to your ego
I'm sorry like Atari whose the cousin to Coleco.. Vision

Pink, Mya, Lil Kim, & Christina Aguilera "Lady Marmalade":
Disagree?
Well that's you and I'm sorry
Imma keep playing these cats out like Atari

Jay-Z "Never Change":
The streets robbed me, wasnt educated probly
but fuck yall i needed money 4 atari
was so young my big sis still playin w/ barbie

Poison Clan "Low Life Muthafuckas":
You can't play me like Atari
Motherfuckers tryin' to will be sorry
'Cause Debonaire's far from a sucker
Another low-life motherfucker

Dream Warriors "The Master Plan":
He knew the scooop on everybody from me
To Geraldine Ferraro
First love was a Ferrari
He played more games than your average Atari

Lil' Wayne "Loud Pipes":
Lamborghini sittin on broaders
With two more in my garages
Plus a blue and black ferrari
With nintendo and atari

La The Darkman "What Thugs Do":
Sorry, I'm the lion in this concrete safari
My Niggaz been in and out of jail since Atari

That was on a Big Daddy Kane album but it wasn't Big Daddy Kane who said that... I forget the guy's name.. Scoob Lover? Scrap Lover? Something like that.

Limp Bizkit has a song (I dunno the name) but they use the very recognizable Williams sound from Defender where a humanoid is picked up.. i.e. the "distress call".

I think that's in the radio/TV friendly edit of N2gether Now. Clever way of bleeping obscenities.

Shifting genres a bit, BT uses a whole slew of classic arcade samples in Movement in Still Life. The only one I recall off the top of my head is the sound from Galaga when the green baddie tries to trap your ship, but there are a lot of others used as well.

@ Captain Yashiro - the name of the Genius/GZA song is "I Gotcha Back."

Rap music has a lot of references to video-games:

Notorious B.I.G. - "Juicy" - "Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis/ When I was dead broke, man, I couldn't picture this..."

Crookyn Dodgers - "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers" - Jeru the Damaja says, "chips that power nuclear bombs power my Sega..."

Monie Love - "There's A Better Way" - "Well at least I got to be his friend though/ after I convinced him Turbo-grafx beat Nintendo..."

Philly's Most Wanted - "Street Tax" - "The game changes every year/ Like EA Sports..."

My favorite has to be Shay holding the Dual Shock on the cover of the N.E.R.D. album (my favorite VA hip-hop artists), and all the beats on Del the Funky Homosapien's last album were sampled from PS1 games.

Oh, and the Street Fighter movie soundtrack had a bunch of songs about Street Fighter 2.

Incidentally, my interview with Keith Murray and Joe Budden about their appearance in Def Jam Vendetta finally got published today, so I'm happy. :D

@digitalpress - I cover urban music and I do reviews for the Game Time section of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, which is a middle-market newspaper in this area. The interview with Murray and Budden made it into the printed version. I'd have to snail-mail it. Unfortunately, only the review made it onto the on-line edition, but you can check out my review of Def Jam Vendetta here:

There are a couple of hip-hop compilations under the name "Game Over" where most if not all of the songs are said to feature some samples/riffs/themes based on games. I've got the first one, and while for the life of me I can't identify anything game-related in half of them, it's got an absolutely killer Eminem song using the Soul Calibur theme.

Del drops a lot of game references in his lyrics. I think that he's also sampled stuff from Tekken 3, Guilty Gear, and other games.

And let's not forget the Pixies' Theme From Narc. It's not a reference, but a great cover nonetheless.

Sinistar...I guess I'm a more modern gamer, but BT is my favorite musician, and I've never noticed the game samples. The guy is a genius. If you're into him, check out the new single "Somnambulist" - it drops May 20 with a wicked hot remix by Sander K (got a wub-wub thing like Dooms Night by Azzido de Bass). The new CD is out in August; I've only heard two of the tracks (som and "Love in the Time of Thieves") but both are hot as hell. BT rocks.

As an aside, as the "PSX guy", I guess I hafta mention "My Console" by Eiffel 65 (you know, he did the "I'm blue, dabadee dabadaa" song).

"We gonna play the game, the playstation all day
with metal gear solid to tekken and
from omega boost to resident evil
just play for the fun, cuz we got it goin on
P L A Y STA T I O N
Tekken 3, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo
Omega Boost, Bloody Roar, XFiles, All over the World
C'mon! Ridge Racer, Oddworld,
We gonna live it, the game on the Playstation"

My one question is...X-files!?

It probably doesn't count, but I have made 2 of my own video game-related parody songs (The lyrics are tsill a little rough, but I'm pretty sure they'll come out perfect):

Quadrun for a Buck
Doom 2 (Hell on Earth)

and 2 more I just started working on:

The Fantasies aren't Final
We built Simcity (On a 20K Loan)

The Last Emperor (don't know the name of the song) - "Take the advice of Wu Tang, protect ya neck or get bicycle kicked by Liu Kang."

Juice (in a freestyle battle) - "You couldn't reach the top if you played a bad game of Tetris."

That GZA line is sampled in another song by MF Doom, Slug, and Aesop Rock entitled "Put Ya Quarter Up" One line from the song goes - "Still the one who used to take your high score down." I used that as a sig at the old boards for awhile. And ya, Liquid Swords is one the greatest albums of all time.

it's got an absolutely killer Eminem song using the Soul Calibur theme.

You know what sucks. I made a beat using the same exact sample about 3 months before that record came out. They did a little better job with it, but I was still pissed. I am working with crappy equipment as well.

The Mr. Bungle/SMB thing is out there on KaZaa. I found it there a looong time ago, but I never knew where it came from. SO yeah, you're not the only one down with them. Now how about Fantomas?

Del drops tons of video game references. One of the songs on "Both Sides..." is nothing but videogame references. In fact, he went so far as to cop the Sega font for the Phony Franchise 12" (He's a huge Sega fan, good taste, that cat.)

Atari Teenage Riot had a spin off called Nintendo Teenage Robots.

There's another band similar to the Minibosses out there. They're called Generic. Check them out, they do the NES catalog, but take a few more liberites than the Minibosses.

Dub artist Scientist titled an early 80s album "Scientist Meets the Space Invaders" after the game. The cover is pretty comic book looking, but he copped the Space Invaders "logo", if you can call it that.

Umm...I can't think of anymore now, but I'm sure we could go for days just thinking of Hip Hop lyrics.

Chrous:
Oooh, looks like evil just gave birth
Doom 2, it's Hell on Earth
They invaded Mars at first
Now they're gonna terrorize the earth
Doom 2, It's Hell on Earth

When the sky turns pitch black
I have a bad feeling we are under attack
'Cause I'm trying to survive
against all the demons spawning outside

I hear an unholy roar
Coming down the cooridor
As I shoot the Baron to the ground
These hellspawn they're all going down

When there's darkness all around
I reach for my goggles and I put them on
When I'm hurt badly
I grab a soul sphere and it heals me

All the creatures I keep on fryin'
I'll lock and load my BFG
As I pray for victory

Mr Bungle does a killer "Tetris" theme, comeplete with trumpet solo. It's ska-core styled, highly recommended.

Man I wish I could remember the name and the artist but there is a song (Puff Daddy maybe?) that was remixed by a dj a couple of years ago, and there was a part where the rapper would say "FIRE!" and you'd here the old school Final Fantasy 2 "Fire Spell/wall crashing down" sound.

The whole song "Proto Culture" by Del The Funky Homosapien is all about vids. Heres the lyrics.

Chorus: Let me tell you about the Proto Culture
If you don't know the culture, here's the whole structure
We've had enough of the lackluster-trust us
We get the kind of games you can't rent at Blockbuster
KU: Game related, raise it bit by bit
Yo D, link up the cable we'll go hit for hit
Phantasma plasma particle beam means I have ya
on the run-the rendered effects hot like magnas

Del: I play games by Capcom with a power glove strapped on O
n any platform, I don't spend my dough on Phat Farm
Video games, I got many to play
Before my life expires; fufill my desires

KU: Mastering your hardest boss
Shattering all stars across
Ain't hard to cross the finish line
Floatin' on Daytona
Wex, Gex or Kloana, we get em all at cost
RPG, Platform we transform like Macross

Del: Rival schools, Batsu
Purchase you ought to
It came with one free CD, it's like I bought two
I hope they make part II for Dreamcast
Cause games I've seen in mags, you won't believe they have!

KU: Getting callouses turning over asteroids
Graviton bombs destroyed
Getting moms annoyed
Now I'm hacking Nightmare Creatures
Their features splattered across the screen
It gets more clean each year

Del: I remember my homie Ed Coats had the most
A Colecovision-every week I'd visit
Playing Donkey Kong Jr., Venture, Rock and Rope
Games I thought was dope
While my moms was watching soaps

KU: I'm on the next level
I got a double barrel shotgun in the Doomworld
Waiting on the next devil
Armor's low-check the arsenal
Rupture the main conductor playin Disruptor

Del: I remember Ninja Gaiden
Finished finally
With Ramone wouldn't answer the phone
This was before getting blown
I own the first Nintendo Power
With the maps of Zelda Help me conquer in an hour

Chorus: Let me tell you about the Proto Culture
If you don't know the culture, here's the whole structure
We've had enough of the lackluster-trust us
We get the kind of games you can't rent at Blockbuster
(2X)

Del: Hey KU you know my SEGA collection is massive
Got all the past hits and classics
Herzog Zwei now Panzer Zwei
Originality that made me a fan today

KU: It's Pandemonium-it's like Toys R Us
Flippin the next Saturn game brings out the boys in us
It's poisonous
Taking out the boys in blue in Grand Theft Auto,
Snatch a Rolls Royce to use

Del: Yeah, I'll admit Playstation improved
Come visit Feudal Japan with me and Tenchu
Bushido Blade 2 with sword play so accurate
Mega Man Legends but I had to buy a map for it.

KU: I fence Hyo to get a Neo-Geo
For Samurai 64 in full rendered splendor
Rival counter and enter my sword in his innards
My joint was being Leonardo wuppin' on Splinter

Del: I gotta get Xenogears-that's the type of game that relieves my fears
Get it from overseas to here
I gotta get Psychic Force
Authentic arcade that I can endorse
They got me liking imports

KU: I'll need to be at the next E3,
What's the next CD I need to see
Me and D signing checks
Let's float overseas, mingle with game companies
Giving tips to Capcom and Sega-you can't front on these

Del: To anyone who knew me better
Know I chose Saturn first Cause it's 2-D heaven
Bernie Stolar dropped the ball with the RAM cartridge
X-men Vs. Streetfighter could've expanded the market

KU: Marvel Vs. Capcom-beyond fathom
Tell the truth, Playstation ain't ready to have em
Come on I'll bring the onslaught
Alpha and Omega
Khaos Unique brought to you by SEGA.

Chorus: Let me tell you about the Proto culture
If you don't know the culture, here's the whole structure
We've had enough of the lackluster-trust us
We get the kind of games you can't rent at Blockbuster

I was hoping this topic would pop back up, as I found some:

Audio Karate - "Nintendo 89"

the song makes no mention of anything game related, but the title is related. The song appears on the Warped Tour 2003 cd, disc 2 track 6 (I think)

Attaboy Skip - "Oceanside Putt-Putt"

this one is from the comp "Ska Sucks," some excerpt lyrics:

"I remember the old days
we'd meet at 8 o'clock
to play some arcade video games
karate champ and kid chameleon
some video kung fu
paperboy and galaga
we'd play pole position too"

Two noteworthy entries, at least in my opinion :D.

A year and a half later, I think it's time to resurrect this.

I found a really odd hardcore band that has a song about Megaman boss Cutsman:

http://www.hxcmp3.com/bands/4705/

It's by HORSE the Band, who sounds like half hardcore and half nerd-metal. Their stuff is alright in small doses. Their site is here, where you can find lyrics for the song:

I know there's some Wu Tang or solo project song that mentions Soul Edge, but it's completely escaping me right now.

And to add to the aformentioned Atari Teenage Riot references, Alec Empire (ATR member/producer) uses a very blatant "SEGA!" sample from Sonic in his "Pleasure is Our Business" track, and there's the disc by EC80R on his DHR label titled "The Horrible Plans of Flex Busterman", which is the soundtrack to a fictional video game (the CD insert is the "manual", with lots of poorly photoshopped graphics).

I'm not sure if anyone gives a damn, but here's the vg samples previous posts hinted at that Mr Bungle used on their first CD:

Slowly Growing Deaf uses a mixture of Super Mario Bros. music in the background, during a dreamy, slowed down part in the middle.

Carousel uses a bunch of voice samples from Funhouse (the pinball machine), including "Hurry Hurry, step right up!", "Welcome to my house", "Ride the ferris wheel" (Patton sings "...let's make a deal - " and then the sample plays as if he sung it) and "Hey You!" At the very end, the little RBI Baseball ditty plays.

Egg has "Rise from your grave" from Altered Beast. Some random stuff from Ghouls And Ghosts are used as well.

My Ass Is On Fire has the thundering "Earthshaker!!!" voice sample from the pinball game of the same name. There's a Defender sample in here somewhere as well - it might be overlayed on top of the Earthshaker quote as it is quite noisy in this section of the song.

The Girls Of Porn uses "I'd / I'll buy that for a dollar!" from Smash TV.

Well, there's a song in Mega 64 called "nuttin but a dreamcast" that an obvious parody, you can find an mp3 of it by searching their forums.

First thing I though of when I saw this thread wa protoculture, but that's been covered. (Del has a good song similar to that only for scifi called cyberpunks).

Also, there are a few..interesting lyrical songs on OC Remix, check out venus signed bannana peel from eathbound, i got the laserbeam (or something like that) from space harrier, and the team gato song from chrono trigger.

I'm almost certain the Dixie sample in The Clash's "Rock The Casbah" came from a Pac-Man watch.

That X-Files part always got me, but the song was originally from there UK released CD where they were popular. Maybe the game was more popular over there?

Either way, the song blew ass, and so did there entire CD. I don't think I've ever heard a more worthless CD in my entire life. LOL

I've heard a Jaylib track that features vocal samples of Maxi from SoulCalibur near the end.

"Do Not Fire!" by Madvillain features Street Fighter II vocal samples.

"Redworm" by DJ Qbert samples the classic DUNNNNNNN DAH DUNNNN DUNNNNNNNN from Donkey Kong briefly near the end.

"You push my buttons like a video game"
-Suicidal Tendencies, Ain't Gonna Take It

"Go left, up, right, up, (etc) then finish off the dots."
-Kid Koala, Fender Bender (it's Pac-Man you fools!)

"That come across in different shapes and forms like playing Tetris"
"I'm playing John Madden with DJ Aladdin"
-both by Tha Alkaholiks, All Night

Damn, I was going to post about HORSE the band when I saw this :( I have the album if anyone is interested in hearing it.

Oh, The Birthday Massacre have a song called "Video Kid" with this lyric...

Freezepop - Amplitude(?)
Freezepop's new song in the game Amplitude thanks all their fans (since most people became fans due to "Science Genius Girl" in FreQuency) notable is the line that says "You made your FreQ so chic!"

Here we go. (I'm a big Freezepop fan)

The line is "You made your Freq so uber chic"

They have a song called "I am not your gameboy" with a LOT of game references.

Also, a ton of mc chris songs have videogame references.

EDIT: I did not realize this thread was all... old-like. Sorry if these are already in the thread somewhere.

"Creating lyrical Galagas"
-Del tha Funkee Homosapien, "Time Is Too Expensive"

The Can Ox lyric I posted actually comes from "Atom".

Aphex Twin's "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" slides some random Defender samples into the 2nd half of the song.

Mix Master Mike's "Terrorwrist" ends with NBA Jam shouting "He's on FIRE!!!!"

Sorry about the other topic I created!

(I searched for this but couldnt find a similar topic, so here it goes.)

I recently have discovered that more artists are sampling video games (mainly old school). Beck for instance, on his new album "Guero" there is a definite sample from Video Olympics in the beginning of track 3 "Girl" and a definite sample of Air-Sea-Battle plus other classic gaming sounds on track 14. Also I noticed a rap song on the radio awhile back sampling pac-man... Anyone know of other popular artists that sample classic video games for their songs?
