Just to start out, thought I'd tell one of my most painful VG stories:
The game that caused me to sell all my games in 1998, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete.
I just bought the game with the guide, as I usually do for RPGs, I just like to collect the guides as well. I hear Lunar is much easier than the last RPG I just beat, Final Fantasy VII, but it's anime and I'm a sucker for that so I get it.
I bring home Lunar, spend two weeks straight playing through it... and I get stuck. In a puzzle, in a town. So I go to the guide, follow the steps... and I'm still stuck.
I remain stuck for the next month. I couldn't beat what was called one of the easier RPGs for the PSX. I got so distraught that I sold all my games, including my SNES with FF 3 complete in the box, something I have yet to recover.
Argh, I was an idiot. But Lunar:SSSC killed my will to game. for about a year anyway. I started playing PC games, then I got Diablo II, then I got an XBOX for Christmas in 2001. I've since regrown my collection to, well a decent amount. But I still need more early stuff and the entire 16-bit era systems. Oh well, I have time :)
But, that's my story.
