Now that my wife has finished her office we have 2 adjacent rooms with networked PCs in them. I was thinking of setting up a few games to play over the LAN. They don't have to be current since her machine is a P2-266 and mine is only an Athlon-500, both running 98-SE. My wife's not a big gamer, but if we could each play against each other and start shouting/taunting between rooms I could see her getting into it.

I've never been a big FPS fan, but is there an older Doom port that has a deathmatch mode playable over the LAN? I'm open to any type of game if you think will work on the HW I have to work with. Also the games should be shareware/freeware so I can download them somewhere.

woohoo that remembers me of those days and there is only one good answer to this:

DUKE NUKEM 3D

u can get it somewhere on the net, just search the abandonware sites

if u don't know, it's a fps and it's the coolest ever made ;)

it has a co-op mode (u really got to search hard to find games that have, serious sam would be an alternative, but ur hardware is to weak) and it's one of the best fps ever made, if not the best

but WARNING, it has explicit contents, nudity, strippers, lots of blood, so if ur wife is not that type, DONT TRY IT :)

if ur wife is more into strategy you should get:

Civ.Net or even better "Alpha Centauri" both made by sid meier

hope i could help ya ;)

Blood is my favorite Build engine game, and is a riot in both deathmatch and co-op.

As for Doom, go to www.doomworld.com and check out their list of source ports. I like ZDoom myself, but I'm not sure which port is best for multiplayer.

Unreal Tournament, best there is

Unreal 2003 is also out, but won't run on a computer of that speed.

I can't believe nobody has suggested Descent. It's a great game, AND it runs fine on 486's for cryin' out loud.

Warcraft II (Masterpiece, great, great, great, do it, do it!)
Starcraft, if you prefer that to Warcraft II
Diablo 1 (Hardware friendly, addictive)

As for FPSs, I've run Unreal Tournement on a 266 with acceptable results. Half Life should also be able to run, especially if she has a decent enough video card. I consider that to be the #1 FPS of all time, but 2 players on a LAN isn't it's best way to be played, at all. Unreal Tourny is good for that, because it has support for bots built in. Jedi Knight doesn't have bots, and it isn't my favorite game flat out, but it's very hardware friendly, and with just two people lightsabre duels can still be fun.

Civ.net and Alpha Centauri are both great, as hydr0x suggests, but personally I find turn based games a little awkward for multiplayer (Having to wait for the other person to take their turn... especially late in a game when that takes a lot of thinking...), so I prefer the RTS's for that, Warcraft II, Starcraft, maybe even Age of Empires.

Warcraft 2, starcraft, Quake I, Quake II, UT (if you have 3d cards of any type.) Diablo is fun if you both have never played it.
