How exactly would I go about opening a Famicom cartridge without breaking it apart?

Thanks.

Good luck, sir (or madam?)! I tried to open my FF2 cart for a good cleaning, but was met with terror: I feared that I might damage the plastic trying to get those damn clasps on the inside undone. I gave up, since the game worked fine anyway. If you do figure out a good way to do so without killing the cart, let me know ^_^

Well, from what I can see is that it's held together by a piece of plastic in a slot that it hard to pry out.

I'm a sir, BTW. ;)

You ever find a decent answer for this?

In my experience (some) Fami carts that don't have security screws have about six "snap-togehter" areas.

If you pry the carts open slightly and get a thin metal object in there and press inward you'll "unlock" them in each area and they'll pop open. (DON'T PRESS TOO HARD OR YOU'll BREAK THEM!)

Of course, since there are lots of variations on Fami cart shells, this may or may not be the case with the ones you have.

I tried the thin screwdriver once, it broke off a piece of the casing and I never did it again. The best way I have found to open them is to just use your hands.

*1. Hold the cartridge with the edge connector facing you and the label facing right. Push up and left on the left half of the case and push down and right on the right half. It should pop open with some effort.

2. Flip it around with the edge connector still facing you and the label facing left. Now do the same thing except in reverse: Up/right on the right half and down/left on the left. Once you get it to pop open, the hard part is done.

3. The top part is easy once the sides are loose. Just wiggle it until it comes apart.

*the order of steps 1 and 2 can be reversed.
