I'm a huge shenmue fan. More than anything else (at least in the realm of gaming) I want the Shenmue trilogy to come to a close. Generally though, I don't see much love for the series. Yeah, there are plenty of others who feel the same way as me, but I never thought so many to boost Shenmue 2 to number 10 on a reader's choice list. In the end it really doesn't mean a whole lot, but I was just glad to see Shenmue get such praise on a mainstream gaming site.

Hope it's exciting for some of you as well.

Jack

It's cool that Shenmue was so highly praised, but that list is kind of strange.

There's a heck of a lot of football games. The only pre-PS2 games mentioned are those with a ferocious, rabid fanbase (the kind where fans would vote multiple times) and note the total lack of arcade games. I find it hard to believe that any "top 100 of all time list" anywhere, anytime, could lack Street Fighter II. I'm not even a huge fan of that game, but come on! It had so much impact on the industry.

I dunno, I just thought it was odd.

First off. This top 100 list is pretty bad. Aside from the previous mention of no arcade games, there is the fact that almost every game besides maybe 10 were from this or last gen.

Sorry, but there are many other amazing games that could been put in this list much much higher. How about Mega Man 2 or 3? What about the original Castlevania? Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together? Dragon Warrior 3? Street Fighter Third Strike or SF Alpha 3? These are easily the best of their genres and some of the best games of all time, but how many people doing these top 100's have even played these?

Or how about a DS game that ends up belonging in the top 100? Feel the Magic. But there's also WWF No Mercy, which is a good game, but it's WWF Wrestlemania 2000 all over again, except without the ability to truly create and customize your own characters(which on W2K you could set up every move for the characters plus add their specials, including ones for WCW characters and old WWF characters, then ontop of that add a different entrance with music - and in No Mercy you could only edit a certain characters appearance and put a different name but with the same moveset, entrance, rivalry, etc.)

Then finally. This list automatically fails when Disgaea and Kingdom Hearts are put in here when there are tons of games that fit the bill much better. Instead of Kingdom Hearts, they could have easily added God Hand, Legacy of Kain Defiance, Blood Omen 2 , Blood Omen, Devil May Cry, etc(there are really a ton of games from this genre that are far better.) Instead of Disgaea they could have easily had Tactics Ogre, Tactics Ogre KoL, any Shining Force title(aside from the crappy PS2 games,) any other Fire Emblem not listed, Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Advance, etc. I mean seriously wtf? There are so many games that should have been there besides these pos titles.

Even though I did think it was a very bad top 100, I don't think a game like SF2 deserves to be top 100 just because what it did for the genre. It's like IGN's 2007 list(which was pretty good.) They rated Dragon Warrior as the 29th in the top 100 games of all time.

Now if you look at it at this point of view. Top 100 games of all time are supposed to look at the games themselves. Yes, Dragon Warrior did inspire pretty much all RPGs, but the fact of the matter is the game itself sucks. You may here people say "but it was good for its time," but there's no excuse to rank a game much higher than it deserves solely because during its time it was good. How about the Mega Man and Castlevania, two games that came out on the NES and are actually STILL GOOD. It's fine ranking a game higher if it's aged well, but with a top 100, it's "how good is this compared to others," and not "was the game awesome back in 1989." This is why I think Dragon Warrior 3 should be ranked on the top 100 because even after all this time it's still an amazing game, unlike it's predecessor which is a terrible game in comparison to all the other games out there.

Anyways. SF2 has aged pretty well, but there is SF3 Third Strike, Alpha 3, and other fighters that are more technically advanced and altogether better games that I'd think would be put up there before SF2 gets the chance.

Right, but that wasn't my point. Maybe Capcom got lucky, but the end result is that SF2 has a brilliant gameplay mechanic that is addictive and timeless. They can tack that mechanic into any kind of presentation they want (Alpha, 3rd Strike, etc.), but really they're all based on that core gameplay.

To this day I have never had trouble finding multiple people to compete against on Xbox Live in SFII. It still draws decent following. And again, I'm not even hugely into that game, and I really suck at it comparitively. But anybody who lived through the arcade and 16-bit era will probably agree that any "top 100 list of all time" that doesn't include some form of street fighter, is madness. Then again, this list doesn't contain Pac-Man or Donkey Kong either.

You might not know this, but when writers and editors put these idiotic lists together, they make bad decisions on purpose...it's manufactured controversy. It's an old tactic that gets people talking about the list, which increases traffic to the web site or gets people to buy the magazine.

Soul Calibur for Dreamcast is number 3!

Just like I always said, the dreamcast version was ALWAYS superior and this series just gets worse with each new edition.

It's the same basic concept, but the original just had a magic that has been lost.
