I am having issues with my ROM set, I just got MAME OS X for my Mac, and I can't get certain games to work correctly, namely Tempest, Arkanoid, and many others. Is it because a certain MAME set may not work correctly in a mac? or do I just have a bad set? These ROMS used to work, but it was a long time ago, in an older version of MAME32 for Windows XP.

Tempest and Arkanoid work fine in MAME OS X for me. You're probably just using an old rom set. Update your roms to v0.124 or higher and you should be good. I get mine from here:

I've had soooo much trouble with romsets in MacMame. I just took the files from my PC when I bought a Mac and transferred them over, but over half of them no longer work. The games are supported by Macmame (or so the Romlist says) but they just don't work. It's totally hit or miss.
Thanks for the link, hopefully that fixes the issue.
By the way, Chandler, if you're using a mouse-supported game you may have to unplug any USB joysticks you have plugged into your Mac. For some reason mouse support is totally fucked when a joystick is in the picture. Works fine when you boot the rom without the gamepad. Very weird.
Last I checked, MacMame hadn't been updated in a few years...it was like they gave up on it. Has there been a recent update?

The last update seems to be from early 2006...
I miss the old mame.dk site, with it I always found the right ROM version that worked with macmame... sigh
Thanks for the link, though! :)

This happened to me in MacMAME but never in MAME OS X. I've got 2 Logitech controllers (1 wireless, 1 corded) and a flight stick and never had any mouse issues since I started using MAME OS X.
Looks like they abandoned MacMAME. Not really a big deal though since MAME OS X runs much smoother. I just wish they'd update it soon because the last one was 0.124.
But if you're having any problems with your roms, try that Pants Emulation site. Any rom I find that doesn't work, I just replace it with one I download from there and it always ends up working after that.

I think a lot of the problem is that I've been using MacMame all this time. I actually didn't know about MAME OS X. When I have 5 minutes I should work on this. Shinobi would be effing BEAUTIFUL on my huge mac monitor in full-screen mode but my friggin' romset is toast. Thanks again for the link.

So MAME OS X is better than MacMame?

Definitely. I remember T2 being real choppy for me in MacMAME but in MAME OS X it runs smoothly and at full speed. A bunch of other games I had problems with in MacMAME like the Mortal Kombat series and Golgo 13 all ran faster too.
Plus, MacMAME is only updated to .103. MAME OS X is on .124 right now (I think MAME is currently at .128 or .129), so it's compatible with more roms and has more bug fixes.

I'm gonna give it a try when I have some time to do it (not before next week)...

regarding mameOSX.
I used to have a PC, and I had downloaded the rom "DJ Boy" to play.
I tried it and it said "this game doesn't work, it will never work, don't even think about trying to make it work, it won't, something to do with the encryption."
With that, I had assumed that the game was not emulated.
Now, I put it on my ibook running mameOSX, and the game works fine!

I used to use MacMAME, but the only version that was stable and played the games I like properly, was version 0.96u4 or something, and it seems to be impossible to find the right ROMset for it. :(
I tried MAMEOSX at one point, but it was really buggy and the interface was almost nonexistent at that point.
I take it that a lot of progress has been made, but I'm not sure how well it would run on my G4.

Oh wow. MAME OSX has finally been updated after a year and a half of nothing. Grab the 0.135 update here, GOGOGO:
http://mameosx.sourceforge.net/
Now I can finally play those Touchmaster games that I always waste all my money on at the bar.

ROFL
Not to mention a bunch of games have gotten fixes in the MAME source since the last time this emulator was updated. Task Force Harrier is playable, a bunch of stuff doesn't break when savestates are used, and so on. Good times.
'course, MAME is now up to 135u1. It would be great if our friends in the Mac world could get regular updates to this fantastic program.
