At what point does an unfinished RPG just become an abandoned save file? Who really plays 20 games simultaneously? I can't even resume a month old save file without becoming frustrated and disoriented.

"Abandoned save file" is a good way to put it. If I can't remember what I was doing or where I needed to go, it's officially abandoned. What really sucks is when this happens after I've invested 10 or 20 hours in the game. Then it enters into the seemingly permanent "hiatus-mode". Too much trouble to pick up and play, but too irritating to start over from the beginning. Breath of Fire II and Valkyrie Profile have both fallen victim to this catch-22.

Fortunately (or unfortunately I guess), I force myself to finish just about every game I start. I've been this way since I was a kid. It's hard to describe...it's this compulsion that prevents me from enjoying a new game unless I complete whatever old game I was working on. RPG's are the worst in this regard. Mainly because I have trouble playing two RPG's simultaneously and because of the large investment of time it takes to complete one. FPS's I can play 3 or 4 at the same time.

list about every major nes, snes, genesis, ps1, ps2, and gamecube rpg and that would be my list. Rpgs are my favorite games to collect and I've got a ton of them... I just don't have the time to play them.

Xander

All the game on my list are going to get finished sooner or later. Picking up is often a bit disorienting but at worst you just start over.

I don't see it as a race, it can takes as much time as needed to finish a game. I think my BoF2 game has been attempted on 3 different occasions in the last 10 years. I'll finish it someday.

It all comes in time.

Too many to list. On top of that, I haven't felt like playing one in a LONG time.

However, the RPG count in my collection increases because it's hard to pass up deals I know I may never see again. My RPG acquisition highlights of 2008 include Suikoden boxed for $5, Dragon Warrior II cart only for $5, Landstalker cart only for $2.50, and even a disc only Ogre Battle Limited Edition for PS1 for $1.

I'm in the same boat, DigitalSpace. With the transition from last-gen and increasing after-market value of RPGs, I've been busting my butt to get my hands as many as my wallet can stretch. There are just too many deals popping up that's I can't just refuse. :(

Kotor 1&2

Those are the only two rpg's I have ever played for more than 5 minutes and the only two I have completed. I can vouch for both being excellent games. While the first one usually gets the most praise, the second one is just as praise worthy, though not quite as filled with surprises. But still, do yourself a favor and finish them both;)

I'm quite ashamed of my backlog... I haven't played KOTR or 2 yet :( As well as haven't beat any of the FF's.

I have most of the PS2 RPG's but have yet to play them.

Trying to do things a little better this generation, but man I haven't even finished Oblivion! I did complete Mass Effect and am working on Fable II and Fallout 3 now.

By God I did Enchanted Arm s though!

man kotor and kotor 2 rock so hard. I'm pretty sure they both run on a modified version of the neverwinter nights 2 engine. By the way neverwinter nights and neverwinter nights 2 also both rock really hard. and so do baldurs gate and baldurs gate 2 for that matter.

I find myself constantly torn by the desire to finally play Final Fantasy VI and some strange compulsion to play through the first six Final Fantasy games in sequential order. And so I end up playing none of them.

The other thing I particularly regret is not finishing Torment. One of these days.

the worst for me is definitely ff1 on the ff origins compilation on psx i played through to the very end and then that save file get stale. Now i'd have to pretty much replay the whole thing to feel like i beat the game in any sort of way. when i say stale i mean that save is like 4 years old now lol.

I don't get how people have such large backlogs.

For mine it's...

Persona 3 FES(sealed, need to load my original save data to this though.)
Digital Devil Saga 2(stopped halfway through.)
Wild ARMs 5(sealed.)
Grandia 3(sealed.)
Jeanne D'arc(sealed.)
Star Ocean First Departure(sealed. UMD drive isn't working on PSP.)
Suikoden 3(stopped after each character met up. I've made several new files that I've ended up stopping around this point.)
Suikoen 5(couldn't stand the game. stopped after 12 hours.)
Star Ocean 3(couldn't stand the game. stopped about 5 hours.)
Final Fantasy 12(couldn't stand the game. stopped after 10 hours.)

It's pretty easy when you've got a couple hundred rpgs and a full-time job, kids, or whatever else taking up your time.

11-02-2008, 07:37 PM
Eh, too many to count. At least 30 on PS2 alone and dozens across other systems. If each one took an average 30 hours that's 900 hours. Playing about 20 hours a week it would take me almost an entire year to clear just my PS2 backlog, but in that time I'd probably buy 10 more RPGS. But I rarely get to play 20 hours a week of anything and even when I do get to play that much I don't always play RPGS, so I expect to clear my backlog about the 5th of never.

My situation is similar… too many to list, not much time to devote as I'd like, I end up playing a shooter when I should play an RPG :embarrassed:
and… I continue to buy more @_@

This is one of my major issues… full time work, children… I am not of youth any longer… while in high school, I was able to knock out games like FFII(IV), FFIII(VI), Lufia, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star IV, et cetera… with out issue but these days and times i am having hard times to complete titles :(
I also notice that RPGs these days are far much longer than the RPGs of old. Games of then use to be about 30 hour now games can reach 80-100 hours of play time!

It's really funny, but I never get the urge to play RPGs until the autumn thru winter months, then I crave them. I have the usual ton of backlogged RPGs. Wasted time? How about having 30 hours into Baten Kaitos recently and then hitting a very vile nasty glitch that would not allow me to progress any further in the game? I had no choice but to erase my file. (i'm usually a one-file type of gamer)

Right this moment I'm playing The Last Airbender on Xbox, also available on Wii, PS2 and Cube. (YEP...it's a light, fun full-blown RPG with variable stats and magic and equipables!!!) I'm also FINALLY playing Chrono Cross and I'm finding it to be annoyingly vague as to what to do/where to go next. It pisses me off when an RPG "forces" you to buy or consult a guide in order to play it. After that I'll MAYBE try yet again to play Chrono Trigger. I found it boring and bailed on it.....but a million gamers can't be wrong.

Next will be the Cube version of Twilight Princess, since I didn't care for it control-wise on the Wii and abandoned it. Then Final 8 since I never DID beat the end boss when the game first came out. After that are the two Baten Kaitos games and Virtua Quest on Cube, hopefully with better luck this time around. Then there are various RPGs across all consoles from the NES to the PS3.

3 years later:

I've officially abandoned just about every JRPG I've purchased since my first post in this thread. I could probably count on one hand how many I've finished since then. I stopped buying them completely earlier this year. It's just recently that I've been able to finally accept the fact that I don't have the time or interest for JRPG's anymore. I most likely never will again. It's sad because Disgaea 4, FF13, and Tactics Ogre PSP all look like fun (collecting dust on my shelf).

That being said...western RPG's are still my thing. Loved the ME's, Oblivion, and Fallout series. Totally plan on sinking every minute of free time I have into Skyrim. 5 1/2 years of waiting and only 4 days to go!

Anyone able to knock off some from their rpg backlog since we last met?

Press_Start
05-23-2012, 03:01 PM
If anyone's curious (or desperate) to try out, here's my method for handling my huge RPG backlog:

Step 1: Pick 20 games. Number them 1-20.
Step 2: Take a 20-sided MtG die and roll it 5 times.
Step 3: Place all 5 numbered games into one pile. Put the rest away.
Step 4: Play them! :)
Step 5: Rinse, lather, repeat.

Here's the rules I follow:
Rule 1: Never play any other "NEW" RPG.
Rule 2: Wipe away any or all existing unfinished save files and start over at the beginning. (This one's a personal rule. It help keep focus on the story easily since I find harder to enjoy a game when trying to catch up on 10+ hours of forgotten story and item collecting but that's just me.)

Numbers and preferences may vary but to each their own.

I've finished Star Ocean First Departure. I've got a few PSPs since my original post. I've added plenty games since, finished some, but my backlog is much larger. Nothing really old is on my backlog as all have been completed, but new titles have been.

Persona 3 FES(sealed.)
Digital Devil Saga 2(stopped halfway through.)
Wild ARMs 5(sealed.)
Grandia 3(sealed.)
Jeanne D'arc(sealed.)

Added games and games I may not have added previously.

White Knight Chronicles 1 played from White Knight Chronicles 2. I stopped this one half way. It's a good game and one thing I like they have a star that shows you exactly where you need to go next, except at this one part where they want you to talk to everyone in the town to find whoever. So I talked to literally everyone and can't find where to go. After going back and forth repeatedly talking to everyone in that town wasting about two hours I saved then quit. I'll go back to it, because I liked the game, but damn if that part wasn't stupid as hell.

Star Ocean the Last Hope. Didn't get very far into this at all. Graphically it's a downgrade from Star Ocean 3, but the gameplay itself is fortunately much more enjoyable. The boring storyline at every turn is what had me set it down.

Eternal Sonata. Sealed.
Astonishia Story. Sealed.
Hexyz Force. Sealed.
Persona Portable Sealed.
Persona 2 Innocent Sin Portable. Sealed.
Persona 3 Portable. Sealed.
Lunar Silver Star Harmony. Sealed.
Riviera the Promised Land GBA and PSP
Yggdra Union GBA and PSP. GBA version sealed.
Legend of Heroes Prophecy of Moonlight Witch. Sealed.
Legend of Heroes Song of the Ocean. Sealed.
Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky
Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles. Sealed.
Valkyria Chronicles 2. Sealed.
Final Fantasy The Four Warriors of Light. Sealed.
Dragon Quest 6. Sealed
Dragon Quest 5. Sealed.
Black Sigil Blade of the Exiled. Sealed.

Final Fantasy 13

About All i play is RPGs with the very occasional exception.

Ive only ever beaten a handful of RPGs, all other games I have a strong need to beat them, when I play an RPG I can always find something else to do like a hidden boss or max out a characters stats, and so I put of beating them.

Ive beat most of the final fantasies on friends save files, the first 4 Breath of Fires (favorite series and even forced myself through most of 5).

I actually have a hard time going into that last boss even if I am so ridiculously overpowered it will be easy, its hard to end something Ive got over 40 hours into.

Current backlog,
Skyrim - Final part of main quest but I am currently trying to max every skill, all I have left is a few magic skills.
Oblivion - havent even started
Morrowind - Couldnt get into it, wandering around with no aim getting lost got old for me
Tales of Symphonia - Abandoned save file
Star Ocean (Xbox360) - Havent started
Dragon Age - Havent started
Lost Odyssey - Not very far
FF13- got bored after about 15 hours
FF8- havent started
FF9 - Started over about 20 hours in
FF12 - gave it a second chance and just got into it
Skies of Arcadia - about 2 hours in
Disagaea - Way too much time wasted and I get back into it about every 3 months
Grandia Extreme- Havent started
Suikoden 3 - abandoned save file
FF7 Crisis Core - played it just for the back story and hated it
Suikoden 2 - a few hours in
Rogue Galaxy - Cant remember where I left off.

Im missing quite a few im sure, Im running into the problem of finding RPGs I actually like lately. Seems like in the PS1 day I like everything I could get my hands on and almost as much so with PS2 and outside of skyrim I havent found anything on the last generation I really enjoyed.

So, how's everyone's rpg backlogs coming along?

Rickstilwell1
11-30-2013, 10:12 AM
After finally finishing Final Fantasy for NES (all I had left to do was level up for the final boss and beat him so I did and it was really easy), I actually managed to pull a file from Final Fantasy II NES up also from 2 years ago and figure out where I left off, deciding I made too much progress to start over. At least I was able to match up my progress with a walkthrough to refresh my memory.

I actually completed or re-completed most of the RPGs in my backlog already this year. So after that I just need to start new files on the ones I either got tired of or cheated through a long time ago. I currently have save files going in:

Dragon Warrior II - NES
Final Fantasy II - NES
Pokémon Red Version - Game Boy
Dragon Warrior I & II - SNES (on the 2nd game)
Shining Wisdom - Saturn (ok this one is technically an action adventure, not an RPG)
Suikoden - PS1
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - PS2
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom - PS3
Final Fantasy XIII-2 - PS3 (just need a few more fragments and those paradox endings)

So my RPG backlog of started games is fairly low, but my games to re-play or play for the first time is too long to even take the time to list here.

I've already knocked out 14 of these kinds of games since I started the serious gaming in June so I'm sure I'll probably at least knock out FFXIII-2 soon. I'm kind of playing Final Fantasy in a pincer strategy. Playing the old ones from oldest to newest while playing the 3D ones from newest to oldest. Then we'll see if I ever make it past the three original NES ones before I catch up to them from the other end. I don't know, the final bosses on III for NES are a doozy, let alone getting to them.

Resonance of Fate
Final Fantasy 13
Glory of Heracles

So I'm really interested in Lightning Returns. Gameplay looks amazing. This might be the Final Fantasy 10-2 of the Final Fantasy 13 series. So..... yeah. I restarted Final Fantasy 13 and finished it. Now I have to work on Final Fantasy 13-2. :(.

Well, it's not too terrible. I'm almost done beating it, going for 100%.

Way too many games for me, but here goes (some are simply unfinished, others are games that I've had for a few years and still haven't played). My Mac gets the bulk of that backlog...

Final Fantasy V Advance
Final Fantasy IV Advance
Dragon Quest 8
Neverwinter Nights + Expansion packs + premium modules
KOTOR
Neverwinter Nights 2 + 1st expansion pack
Baldur's Gate 1 + expansion pack
Baldur's Gate 2
Fallout
Fallout 2
Freedom Force
Icewind Dale
Paper Mario 2
Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (although I'm almost finished with it)
Zelda: Oracle of Ages
Zelda: Ocarina of Time (plus Master Quest)
Zelda: Majora's Mask
Zelda: Wind Waker
Zelda: Twilight Princess

Oh my... 5 years later and I completed exactly ONE game on that list since (Ocarina of Time via the 3DS remake)... :embarrassed: And I've added a TON of games since then (including several Tales of games, the Etrian Odyssey series, the Dragon Quest series, the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series...). I guess I will never be done with my RPG backlog!

On the upside, one series that I've been good in completing is the Ys series. I've beaten Ys 1 (PSP), Oath in Felgana, and Ys Seven. However, I still have to complete Ys II, Ark of Napishtim and Memories of Celceta (which is the most likely to be completed next in the series).

My backlog:

- Final Fantasy XII (still in the wrapper)
- Kingdom Hearts II (tried starting it again several months ago, but haven't played since October)
- Final Fantasy II, III, and V (the ones that weren't originally released in the U.S.; I have PS1 versions but never got to them)
- several Harvest Moon DS games (finally took the hint and stopped buying them; not that they have a set finish...)
- the Final Fantasy IV DS remake (gave this up as an "abandoned save file" like 4 years ago)

This doesn't even count all the retro RPGs I really want to get to, such as the original Dragon Warrior/Quest series, Ultima, Link to the Past, etc.

On the bright side, I did finally manage to play through The World Ends With You this fall. One down.

Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist Of Arland
Blue Dragon
Breath of Death VII: The Beginning
Breath of Fire
Cthulhu Saves the World
Dragon Age: Origins (and that giant pile of DLC as well)
Final Fantasy XIII
Hyperdimension Neptunia
White Knight Chronicles
White Knight Chronicles II

And a handful of PS1 RPGs that I don't have listed or near me at the current moment. Was having trouble getting them to play, so I moved them to my "need to fix" pile. Think it had Saga Frontier 1 & 2, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 and Wild Arms.

Of this list, I've knocked off Origins, FF13, Neptunia and sold the White Knight collection. Have added Dragon Age II, Dragon's Dogma, Ni no Kuni & FF13-2.

Except you can't have a PS1 version of Final Fantasy III. It doesn't exist. There's the NES translation rom, DS remake, PSP port of DS remake and Ouya/Android port of the PSP version.

Brain Lord for the SNES (Great game. I managed to get stuck three-quarters of the way through it).

Anyone have a top 5 list of favorite NES or SNES RPGs that they can recommend? (other than the Final Fantasy series).

White Knight Chronicles 2 was better than Ni No Kuni in my opinion. I think all the reviews of Ni No Kuni are overrating it because it's a collaboration with Studio Ghibli, not because it's any good. Outside of combat the game isn't bad, but in combat it's garbage. Don't set your expectations high.

I would have to agree. Being new to the site. My backlog of games in general is RIDICULOUS. My rpg backlog is as follows.

Mass effect 2 and 3
KoTor 1 and 2
Elder scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim
FF 8, 9, 10, 12, 13
Dragon Age Origins 1 and 2
Borderlands 1 and 2
Legend of Zelda 1 and 2
7th saga
Dungeon Master 2
Dungeon Explorers
Neutopia 1 and 2
Eternal Ring
Evergrace
Summoner 1 and 2
The bards tale (xbox version)
Shadowgate 64
Skies of Arcadia

Just to name a few.

Lord knows how many are gonna come out this year that will add to the pile.

I'm not going to add games to the list because a lot have been added to my backlog since I posted it. New games and such, but I've actually completed FF13. I started playing through Final Fantasy 13-2 and I can't finish it. Game is garbage. I was going to play it because I think Lightning Returns might be a good game and still do despite the bad reviews, I liked FF10-2 because of its good gameplay, could be the same with Lightning Returns.

Just wanted to post a few things about Final Fantasy 13-2. Despite you might have heard people say it's different from FF13, you might like it even if you didn't like 13. BS. It's the exact same game with minor changes. Your third character is a group of three monsters you can use as a single character for paradigm shifts, so combat is no different, the world is actually a series of very small dungeons that you are constantly going back and forth to one end and then all the way back to the other end. lots of backtracking. There is pretty much no story, or atleast none that I've experienced other than going to every time to collect artifacts which seemingly drop you in the next timeline to collect more to get out of that one. The dialogue is just incredibly bad as characters may be experiencing some phenomenon for the very first time, yet they know exactly what it's called and exactly what it does, and this happens on multiple occasions within the first few hours.

So the gameplay isn't good, the story isn't good, and it's got some of the worst writing ever in an RPG. Square Enix is dead pretty much.

I really need to stop playing putting games I know are more than likely going to be bad in front of those that I'm more interested in playing. It's like I'm like, hmmm. I still haven't played Tales of Xillia, Fire Emblem Awakening, need to finish Etrian Odyssey 4. Oh I know, I'll play Final Fantasy 13-2. And I'm also playing Final Fantasy 4 DS again. The version of Final Fantasy 4 that I already know is a bad game.

My RPG backlog is actually starting to get on my nerves...

Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) - I've been playing this since release in the summer, and I've sunk a 30-40 hours into it but I've not yet managed to reach the end. Mostly because I keep getting distracted by other games.
Etrian Odyssey 4 (3DS) - Played a bit of it. But put it on hold while I went back to SMT IV. Bought it because it was on sale.
Paper Mario Stickerstar (3DS) - Unplayed. Bought when it went on sale for $20.
Rune Factory 4 (3DS) - Unplayed. Sort of impulse bought it, fearing it might disapear after its developer shut down. Probably jumped the gun a little bit there...
Project X Zone (3DS) - Not strictly an RPG, but close enough. I think I was a bit of a ways into it, before I put it down for SMT IV.
Radiant Historia (DS) - Unplayed. Picked it for a decent price online. I'll get to it eventually.
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS) - Actually I've had this for over a year and got a ways into it, before putting it down for Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (the only RPG I completely in 2013. and by 'complete' I mean beat one play though, and not the +game or the bonus dungeon). Will get back to it, I think I like it more then SMT IV.
Knights in the Nightmare (DS) - Picked up cheap, tried to play a bit of it. But didn't really care for its mechanics. Probably won't go back to it any time soon.

RPGs I don't own. But want.

Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS) - Questionably an 'RPG' but putting it here. The game I bought my 3DS for, but never actually got around to picking up.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS) - I liked the first Mario & Luigi well enough.
Devil Survivor Overclocked (3DS) - Another questionable RPG. I do like the strategy RPGs.

So yeah, backlog. Not sure how I'm going to put a dent in it. Especially since right now I'm playing, totally not an RPG, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds... That's a time sink and a half right there. I've got to beat SMT IV next. Got. To.

Paper Mario Sticker Star was a disappointment. I really, really wanted to like it (I'm a huge fan of the rest of the series), but they strayed too far from the original action RPG formula and the new sticker attack principle, while interesting on paper (heh), is annoying in practice. If the stickers were used only for special attacks and items, it'd already be a huge improvement. Also, since they got rid of the experience points/leveling up feature in the game, it makes it a lot less interesting to fight regular enemies on the field. Hopefully, the next title in the series will be once more a flat-character cousin to the Mario and Luigi series.

Oh, and to go back to my backlog: I did finish Ys: Memories of Celceta and am on my way to finish Ys II on the PSP.

I'd think so, yeah. Instead of three monsters, you have another character that can change classes. Six characters available, each one has three class types, at the end of the game you unlock the other three but they cost a lot more CP to learn than the ones they're good with.

Oh ok, sounds a lot easier to manage.

Anyway, I think I'll update my backlog list for RPGs and closely related action adventure types that people usually lump in with them:

Currently have an unfinished file on (what Gamefaqs refers to as "Now Playing":
Final Fantasy II - NES [almost done!]

Games I beat before (without cheats) that I haven't played recently but want to play again
Pokémon: Yellow Version - Game Boy
Soul Blazer - SNES
King's Field II - PS1
RPG Maker (Gobli's Adventure; and maybe actually finally make a game) - PS1
Suikoden II - PS1
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - N64
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - N64
Diablo - PC
Dragon Warrior I & II [only the first game] - Game Boy Color
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX - Game Boy Color
Pokémon: Gold Version - Game Boy Color
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II - PS2
King's Field: The Ancient City - PS2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - PS2
Suikoden III - PS2
Suikoden IV - PS2
X-Men Legends - PS2
X-Men Legends II - PS2

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - Gamecube
Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku - Game Boy Advance

Final Fantasy II [IV] - SNES
Final Fantasy V - SNES
Final Fantasy III [VI] - SNES

Soul Reaver 2 - PS2

[B][B]Games I bought/received, still own physically and haven't even played all the way through before (or not at all):
Diablo II - PC
WarCraft: Orcs & Humans - PC
Shenmue - Dreamcast
Final Fantasy X-2 - PS2
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - PS2
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - PS2
Summoner - PS2
Summoner 2 - PS2
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Xbox
Fable: The Lost Chapters - Xbox
Shenmue II - Xbox

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Gamecube
Tales of Symphonia - Gamecube
X-Men Legends - Gamecube
X-Men Legends II - Gamecube
X-Men Legends - N-Gage (never even had the system yet)
Blue Dragon - Xbox 360
Eternal Sonata - Xbox 360
Fable II - Xbox 360
Fable III - Xbox 360
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Special Edition) - Xbox 360
3D Dot Game Heroes - PS3
Chaotic: Shadow Warriors - PS3
Demon's Souls - PS3
Disgaea 3 - PS3
Disgaea 4 - PS3
Dragon Age Origins - PS3
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - PS3
Enchanted Arms - PS3
Fallout 3 - PS3
Final Fantasy XIII - PS3
Last Rebellion - PS3
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - PS3
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 - PS3
Rise of the Argonauts - PS3
Star Ocean: The Last Hope - PS3
Two Worlds II - PS3
Venetica - PS3
White Knight Chronicles - PS3
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Wii
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D - 3DS

So my real backlog consists mostly of PS3 games while my digital backlog of replays and want to play for the first time is all kinds of crazy. If I threw in all the PS1 & PS2 RPGs I used to own physically and only have backups of now those would probably dominate the non-physical list.

Last summer I put massive amounts of time into Chrono Cross, almost made it to what I believe would be the point of the disc change, then just... stopped playing. No particular reason, just other stuff took over and I haven't got back. If I had a dollar for every game I've been in a similar predicament with and still haven't got back to, well, I could buy some more games and never get around to finishing.

Ah give it a second chance, Lady J. It's a wonderful game....just different. (Like how Final Fantasy Legend is different from Final Fantasy.) ;)

The battles do serve a purpose in that you are rewarded more coins for doing more battles at the end of each stage. And the more coins you have the better stickers you can buy in town. guaranteed multiple attacks in one turn, buy those special blue door stickers you find later on that let's you get those special items with the right one that make boss fights super easy, etc. Yeah, it's a very item/money centric game similar to LoZ:ALBW with a heavier eye on puzzle-solving and forward-thinking gameplay in a nuanced direction that once you delve into the mechanics full-throttle into anything and everything this game offer, it really become enjoyable. :)

Just started playing that this week - pushing DS DragonQuest IV even deeper into my backlog stack.

They had already started on Rune Factory 5 when they shut down, so it's _possible_ some other company will pick it up. But Rune Factory's fan base is kind of specialized, so have my doubts.

No seriously, I think my "Have totally beaten" list is smaller than RickStilWell1's backlog, which only leaves the other 600 or so RPGs left to complete. On the plus side, I know what the cats and I are doing for my retirement.

Them all. Dear god, them ALL.

No seriously, I think my "Have totally beaten" list is smaller than RickStilWell1's backlog, which only leaves the other 600 or so RPGs left to complete. On the plus side, I know what the cats and I are doing for my retirement.

Because of last year's games beaten tracking refresh (I finally started taking notes on what was totally beaten and what was only beaten on easier modes), my official completed list of games I don't have to go back to only consists of 17 RPGs and adventures grouped together:

1. Dragon Warrior - NES
2. Dragon Warrior II - NES
3. Faxanadu - NES
4. Final Fantasy - NES
5. Final Fantasy II - NES
6. The Legend of Zelda - NES
7. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - NES
8. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - GB
9. Pokémon: Blue Version - GB
10. Lagoon - SNES
11. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES
12. Alundra - PS1
13. Beyond the Beyond - PS1
14. King's Field (Japan) - PS1
15. King's Field - PS1
16. Vandal-Hearts - PS1
17. Final Fantasy XIII-2 - PS3

At least I've been hammering away at those NES RPGs. The ones that take a lot more patience to get through than the others without having as much visual candy as games for consoles with higher end graphics. The adventures on NES are fine because of the constant action going on, but the true RPGs with experience points feel tedious at times. At least Dragon Warrior II and Final Fantasy II are now done. Those two are supposed to be the most annoying in each of their series in terms of grinding. It all gets better from here on out until I try some of the older Game Boy ones like Final Fantasy Legend (the first game in the SaGa series). I've heard complaints about Final Fantasy III for NES but having emulated it in the past the only thing I think will be hard is the extremely long final dungeon. As long as I actually train my characters in their recommended jobs this time instead of randomly or instead of keeping the Onion Kid class on them for too long I should have an easier time this time through.
