Last night I beat Super Metroid (first time I'd played it in years). I had forgotten all about the end, when the baby Metroid latches onto the hopper before turning on you and sucking the life out of Samus. I was jumping and swinging my controller trying to get it off me. Then, of course, it gives its life for you in your battle against Mother Brain. What an awesome game. I started thinking about it and I've only been excited while playing a game on about 3 occassions. Super Metroid, Resident Evil (when the zombie turns on you in the beginning or when they come crashing through the windows), and during the occassional multiplayer 1st person shooter when I have friends over to play and trash talk ensues. What was the last game you REALLY got into?

Coincidentially, Super Metroid! I haven't played it in a while, but it still stands out for me. It's not just playing, it's a whole experience; I think I never played a game that could be that immersive. I know everyone says that, but it's so true.

I'm currently playing Castlevania - SOTN and, although gameplay can be really similar sometimes, I miss the ambience.

A: I haven't played through Super Metroid in ages, but I must have run through that game at least five times, likely more. I clearly remember that the last time I played it, I whomped it in under three hours and got to see Samus all out of her armor. Awesome. :D

B: The last game I got super-engrossed into was Mother 3. I originally intended to test it out temporarily, go through the first chapter, then walk away from the game and come back to it during my winter break, starting over and intending to beat it in earnest. That was a massive failure, as I found myself playing through chapters 2 and 3, wanting to break before the game really hit its stride in chapter 4. Well... I went on to play the rest of the chapters, beat it, have a hell of a lot of fun throughout and actually freaking tear up at the ending. It somehow affected me emotionally, and I think that's the first time in a damn long while that an RPG did that to me. ^_^

I loved Super Metroid but could never get the hang of the bomb jump. Needless to say I didn't get very far. One of these days I'll give it another go.

I didn't play Super Metroid (unless you want to count the few minutes I spent with it at a Kay Bee Toys game stand in spring 1994) until March 2007. I spent a week beating it, and it was everything I hoped it would be, and more.

Awesome game indeed.

I just redid it a month ago too.

It was much easier than I remember!!

It was only a matter of time until I did my obligatory "Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time" response. A friend of mine even made this livejournal friend icon for me:

Even with that, I have to admit that I haven't played through the game in at least three years, but I've done so quite a few times.

I don't think I actually beat Super Metroid until around 2001, but it's one of my favorite games ever.
I just wish the wall jump wasn't so infuriatingly difficult to execute.

NO KIDDING! I just waited until I got the super spin jump (or whatever it was called) to complete those areas.

I *LOVE* this game. The controls are silk-smooth, the music's beautiful, and speedruns add an extra dimension. The last time i played it, I finally got under 3 hours 100% for the first time. I just wish I could get some of the more crazy speedrun tricks down. I can do a perfect bomb-ladder and a one-sided wall jump, but some of the shinesparking bits? E-yah! No more for me thanks, I'm drivin'!

Yes, Super Metroid is one of the greatest games of all time. I was playing it recently; it never gets old. 100% atmosphere.
