Since this seems to be the place for collectors, I was curious. What is the general ballpark figure for the depreciation of a prototype once it's dumped/ripped and in circulation?

Depends on the proto. I'll list some of the ones i've seen:

Halo 2 Multiplayer beta: Pre-dump $2,000. Post-dump $75
Propeller Arena: Pre-dump $1,700 (in that ballpark, it was slightly below 2 grand). Post-dump > $250.
Deuce: pre $800. Post $50.
Madden 96: pre $1000. Post free. (seriously, who's going to pay for it now?)

It doesn't always work that way though, i could probably get whatever price i wanted for my copy of Half-Life DC.

A ROM dump is not the only reason, why the prices fall. When the first collector owns the Prototype he will not bid on the next one. So the second ends cheaper at all. Only when new collectors appear or found it.

I see it by Demos too. The first DS Demos from one game ends most over 100$ - 200$ later they fall under 20$ or more when they appears more often. And it happens always, if the Demo is dumped or not. They price will go down.

Maybe it is a reason for some collectors or someone who just want to play the unreleased game, but for real collectors like me too, it is not. I don't care if a Prototype is dumped or not. I want an Original Prototype when possible from my favourite games. So I would pay as much for it as I would do, when it was dumped or not.

Ok, thanks. My issue is, I have managed to track down an authentic copy of resident evil 1.5. The owner isn't willing to part with it, however he will rip it for the right price. It is very much real (He provided me with very real evidence) and I'd like to get it ripped and released asap. However, I'm unsure what price would be fitting.

Once that game is out there (probably worth about $5000 or so) I would say it's about $2000-2500 to rip a game of that nature, but there's no way he could recover and sell that game even for $2500 after it's available on the web...

Works the same with cart prototypes too. Pre dump on NES, about $1000-1500, post dump, $200-400...

Oh, nothing but the best of luck with that one... You should probably read this though before you offer anything. The guy who has the disc is quite insane.

Thanks PA, but this is actually a different, earlier version. Which in a way sucks, I'd much rather see the later one if at all possible, but I just want to make sure this gets done.

Ah, well in that case you may have a chance.

If the owner is at all interested in newer systems, i'd be willing to throw in some interesting data to help cushion the loss... I don't have anything by way of ps1 era stuff though.
