Is there a difference from nation to nation?

Or is a UK title identical to a French title besides the inserts being in the appropriate language?

I'll be in France in a few weeks, and thought maybe I'd hit up a game store if I come across one, but only if the games switch to English mode and will play correctly on a United Kingdom PS2 on a PAL tv.

It will probably depend on title to title, publisher to publisher. Some games will be multilanguage, some will be in French only most likely.

How about region locking and television standards? Is France PAL now, or SECAM? Are games region locked to French PS2's, or is Europe considered one region, thus being compatible on UK PS2's?

I don't mind things being in French, I don't have in mind anything with stories to follow, and know enough French to navigate menus well enough in things like racing games or the Strikers 1945 compilation Europe got.
