I have a regular Fami Disk System.

I love that it has lots of neat exclusives that never made it to the Fami or NES ...

I need to get my hands on the Lupin game (even though its pretty crappy).

I STRONGLY reccomend the Konami title Arumana's Miracle, it's like Castlevania crossed with Rock N' Rope and Indiana Jones. Great stuff. I think it's the studio that did Goonies II, it shares a lot of sound effects.

Haven't had the fortune to own a Twin Famicom, but that is very cool. I'm actually considering buying a regular Disk System, and you just gave me some good ideas for games. :)

Agreed, Arumana no Kiseki is an awesome game. Its on my list along with Guevara and Hitler no Fukkatsu. I have to have games with Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and Hitler in them, can any other console boast that?

The Lupin game IMO is actually pretty fun, the controls arent perfect but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Its a lot like Rolling Thunder gameplay wise, I actually like it a lot better than the SNES one I saw.

An underrated game that I got is Youkai Club. Its sort of a simple Castlevania clone, the controls are a little sticky but its good for its time. Holy Diver is another good Castlevania type, its sort of like a mix between Metroid and Castlevania 1.

Tupin, thats my favorite part of Ai Senshi too :D Its a pretty good game too besides that, it plays a lot like Blaster Master's top down scenes.

Ryan,

I am glad you are enjoying the system. It indeed is one of the greatest import systems ever.

If anyone else is interested in the Famicom and Disk System, head on over to my store at http://www.famicomshop.com/

Currently I have a ton of games for FC/FDS, handbills, and a few systems (AV Famicom, Red Twin Famicom, etc).

I'll have two more Twin Famicoms next week as well.

Thanks,
Carl

Just curious, how much would a loose normal Disk System sell for on your site?

Congrats Arasoi i'm a fami owner myself i just have a famicom av+fds.Have fun with the, sharp twin famicom that is a good model there.I been thinking later in the year i'll get one for backup use. Thanks to the latest episode of famicom dojo that covers it has me interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFXlL-7uyQs

Btw (Carl Kendall) is good on deals for famicom games etc i agree with that arasoi.

I've bought a couple of games from him so far and it has turn out realy good thumbs up.

I have a Twin Famicom AN-505-BK (black and green with the turbo controllers) and I love the machine. It was one of my grail systems and the day I was in the right place at the right time on eBay to snag one for about $100.00 shipped was the peak of my finds last year. (and that was the same year I found a boxed complete HeartBeat Personal Trainer + Outback Joey for $20.00 LOL)

Nazo no Murasamejou is probably my favorite FDS game I own. It's simple yet gets damn hectic in the later stages. Getsufuu Maden and Quarth are some cheap Famicom cartridges that are worth checking out. The former playing like an early Castlevania game and the later a puzzle game I far prefer over the Game Boy version.

How reliable are Famicom Twin systems? I've heard horror stories involving broken drive belts.

How reliable are Famicom Twin systems? I've heard horror stories involving broken drive belts.

I'd say they are fairly reliable. Belts should last a number of years if the system is treated properly. (don't play it for 10 hours a day, every day)

The belts will eventually break and/or 'melt' to the gears, but can be easily replaced though.

The other two issues the FDS has is the head becoming misaligned or the motor needing tweaking. Realigning the head is very easy to do as well. Tweaking the motor speed is a bit annoying and tedious, but I've found only 1 out of every 8 or so that I've repaired so far needed to have this done.

All in all the system is very reliable for the casual gamer who will want to pop a disk in now and again. For the hardcore who will want to play it for extended periods of times, daily, it will definitely wear down quicker and need to be repaired much more frequently (every year or two).

Tupin

If only someone could make a belt a correct size that actually has some longevity in it.

They must have built Disk System belts out of the most fragile and easily meltable/breakable rubber ever. Did they even vulcanize it?

As has been said, the FDS drive belts fair no better or worse than any FDS drive.

I agree that, if you go with a Twin Famicom, the AN-505 model is the way to go. Although some people prefer the Red AN-500 because, well, it is Famicom Red!

I actually have a different color AN-505 than the typical BK (Black/Green) model. It is probably by far the rarest of all the Twin Famicoms.

It is orange with a red eject button. These typically sell for 2-2.5x as much as the BK model AN-505.

Well, I finally got around to build my own Famicom/NES controller converter....But instead using just a single NES controller port connector, I used a NES 4-Score adapter, a 15 pin controller extension cable and rewired the whole thing.....Giving me great results: 1 and 2nd player compatibility (now I can play Contra, P1 & P2 with 2 NES controllers, :D) and added the NES zapper gun capability to the NES 4-Score 2nd controller port as well + the 4-Score built-in Turbo switches, work for both controllers too.....

I've just got a regular Famicom, with no disk system (interested, but I really want something to take even more space... which is why I've been avoiding getting a Neo Geo!!!).

I've seen plenty of add-on disk systems for about 500yen here locally (4000-5000 in Akihabara), and Famicom Twin Systems for 1000-5000yen locally (10,000-20,000 in Akihabara). If you comb the Hard-Off stores, you can usually find some FC Twin Systems in good condition. Of course, if you're importing... I can't imagine the cost plus shipping.

Anyway, that's quite the list of games there, Arasoi! I've been picking up random FC games lately and some of the better ones like the Rockman games, Mario and Dracula are not cheap! Did you buy all of those games in one lot? What on earth did you pay?

for you guys interested, it isn't really a complicated modification (even though, the internal wiring color code mapping don't match), all you need is a littlte of soldering knowledge.....I'll say the hardest part is to find the 4-Score accessory and the 15 pin extension cord....I actually had my 4-Score for years without any use at all until now....I'll see if I can get hold of another 4-score and another extension to write a step-by-step "do it yourself" tutorial....

What on earth did you pay?

Well Im not in Japan, so I have asked Carl to pick me up a lot of games through his contact via Yahoo Japan auctions. I probably payed a bit more than a local person to get the games, but Carl's fees are minimal and I feel like I've gotten some great deals considering location and shipping costs. He's also made some great recommendations on games to get. I've gotten a few more games since my original listing as well.

Nazo no Murasamejou
Gyruss (J, FDS disk writer version)
Meikyuu Jinn Dababa
Arumana No Kiseki

Nazo is really a great game, one of my new favorites.

I'm actually going to be a new regular Disk System owner, so I'm looking for games. I really want Nazo, but I need to seek out cheaper ones now. Specifically, SD Gundam and Ultraman caught my eye.

Instead of listing purchases today Id like to make a Famicom/NES game recommendation.

Abarenbou Tengu for Famicom, otherwise known as Zombie Nation in the US for NES. There were some changes between the two, but its essentially the same game and worth playing either way. Ill be focusing on the Famicom version.

It's a rather whacky side scrolling shmup type game with destructible backgrounds, definitely a lot of fun. The story seems to be about a giant tengu(demon) mask saving America from monsters and aliens, and blowing everything up in the process.

The bosses include the statue of liberty, a weird giant old man in a thong(god? zeus?) and a giant 50s space alien. Awesome.

Play this one if you get a chance. Im going to hunt this down on Famicom cart if I can for sure.

I didn't test the disk as I just grabbed it from a pile of untested stuff. Ah well, I'll toss you another freebie next time and double check that it works.

Hope you are enjoying Gyruss anyway.

Thanks,
Carl

a weird giant old man in a thong(god? zeus?)

That would be Zombie Sean Connery.

Hi Arasoi,

I LOVE my Famicom system. I don't know why (and I don't think Nostalgia alone is enough to justify it), but I have so much fun everytime I bring a new Famicom game home ! No later than last week, I received Super Star Force which I though was a straight shooter - and yet again, what a surprise to find out that you could get out of the ship and explore places by foot ! This is what I love about those games, they still manage to amaze me.
By the way, I've been reviewing a lot of Famicom Disk games on my site, at Video Game Den (http://www.videogameden.com/vgden_fds.htm) :)

Hey lkermal,

Thats one cool site you have, this will help in selecting "new" titles for my Twin =) (Super Star Force sounds awesome by the way)

Do you accept "third party" reviews? I've got a full listing of games on the first post and maybe I can contribute. (I couldnt figure out the "Add your Pov here" thing =( )

I bought an AV Fami & Disc System off risingstuff.com last year. Got it and a couple games (Zelda, Seiken Psycho Caliber?, Aspic) for around $200 shipped. I've been slowly building my collection up since then. Can anyone recommend some good FDS RPGs? I have Esper Dream and Kalin no Tsurugi so far besides the ones mentioned. (As well as Castlevania, Tokimeki High School and I think one other that I've forgotten the name of...)

I like Ys a lot, if you can go old school on gameplay mechanics. I believe there are a couple of those ported to Famicom quite well.

By the way, how is Seiken Psycho Caliber? What kind of game is it?

I have Ys on Master System AND Turbo Duo, so prolly not interested in getting it again. XD How are the Deep Dungeon games? Cleopatra? Ai Senshi Nicole? Druid?

SPC is very Zelda-esque... actually I'd describe it as closer to Neutopia. The graphics seem more realistic and less stylized. It's super hard tho. The boss battles are just insanely tough. Or maybe I'm not playing the game right, I dunno. Just seems very hard to avoid getting hit b/c they're a lot faster than your character. I've tried, but I can't seem to get anywhere in the game.

Deep Dungeon and Cleopatra I havent had a chance to fire up yet, but Ill play them today or tomorrow and post my thoughts here for you.

Ai Senshi Nicol is a great little top down action/adventure game in the vein of MetaFight/Blaster Master top down sequences with a lot more level and powerup complexity. Beating levels requires a lot of strategy and I really enjoy the game, great reccomendation from Carl.

Druid no Kyoufu is an underrrated little top down action/puzzle game that I kind of took a shine to after a few minutes of play. Def. one of Jaleco's better titles.

Oh I see. Gamefaqs has both Ai Senshi Nicole and Druid listed as RPGs, but sound like they're more action/adventure titles. Definitely still interested in both. What kind of puzzles does Druid have? Is it anything like Arkista's Ring (which is an excellent and highly underrated top-down action/puzzle game for the NES)?

From what I have played it mainly seems to revolve around finding keys and other items to enter another area puzzle wise. I think the game balances out pretty well once you get the hang of how to effectively play it.

I sadly have not played Arkista's ring, so I couldnt say.. another one for me to try =)

Feel free to contribute a 'point of vue' about a game, the more feedbacks, the better !!! :)
The 'Add your Pov here' link on each review page is not active anymore 'cause I used to receive tons of spam from it :( If you'd like to contribute a Pov, please contact me at my personnal email (lkermel@hotmail.com)
