Here's what passes for "Room of Doom" around here. More like "Den of Despair." Maybe "Dungeon of Disillusionment" or perhaps "Gallows of Geekdom."
Whatever you call it, you should know that my wife gave me the last, most unused basement room in the house for my 90's stuff:

Just so you don't think I'm stuck completely in the 90's, here's where we do more serious entertaining and modern gaming. The PS3 and 360 are behind the TV (much to the delight of my wife). There's also a new turntable near the bottom for my ever-growing vinyl collection.

Very nice :) You could probably use some posters or some other decor though. :D

I like how the lower part of the wall juts out. Makes a sweet shelf and/or Coke stand.

Your basement doesn't flood does it? Around here it's almost a guarantee, unless it's finished and waterproofed. Whenever I see basement Rooms of Doom, I always get nervous. Anyway, cool setup.

Looks neat.
But yeah, ugly basement is ugly.

Yes very nice indeed. As Drag0nsfyre said, you could use some gaming posters. If you put them in frames they would look great. :-) Plus i would like to see some close ups of the shelves so we could read the titles of the games you have.

Yes, Posters would do great. I think you could also use some better shelving units instead of those extremely plain ones. Still, that's me.

I think you've done pretty good for a small space with a small furniture investment.
Paint and posters would go a long way to improving the space and are very cheap to implement. Shelves can also be painted for a more uniform look and minimal cost.
My main concern would be damp - concrete floor, basement... make sure the room is decently heated or your stuff might get damaged pretty quickly. It's amazing how fast cardboard (particular older stuff ;) can start to smell in a damp environment.
I like the room :D

Any game room set up thats neat and organized will always win favor with me. However, that basement looks so cold and lonely. You need to liven it up. Like others have said, posters would help. So would some game mats or plushes. But still it looks like a very promising start.

Thanks for all the ideas. As for the room, it's warm and dry, which is also important to me. Our house sits on a ridge line and the basement has never, to my knowledge, flooded. I checked some of the original timbers for water stains and found none. We had to sell our house in the States when we moved here to Calgary for a three year work assignment, and we are currently renting. Therefore, I don't really want to invest too much. Besides, I want the room to be less of a "shrine" to video games as much as a place to play video games. I thought about some of the posters that came in some SMS or Nintendo games, but i'd rather keep them boxed. Also, sometimes extra flare translates to extra clutter. I just like being able to swivel around in my chair and have all my classic games, other than the loose games and systems in plastic bins (not pictured), within arm's reach.
Also, these are all 100% from 'the wild,' other than a handful of new games purchased at MSRP or less.
Here are some close-ups which was requested:

Shoot, if it's a rental house, all I'd bother with would be a coat of paint. Maybe some extra lighting, since the pictures look a bit dim. If you owned the place, I'd suggest putting mirrors up to make it look more spacious.
I'm not much for posters, plushies, and action figures. When you see some people's Rooms of Doom, their place is crammed full of plushies scattered all around, which seem out of place to me. I think something like that would look better all in one location. And I don't like non-game related toys all over the shelves, either. It makes a collection seem cluttered with non-essential stuff. I prefer good organization (something I'm lacking at the moment).

I totally agree with this. It's cool to have all that other stuff too, but a room looks so much nicer with games lining the shelves in a consistent fashion.
Killer collection!
