So, I was watching a video on this whole Universal vs. Nintendo court case from 1982 (Don't ask why) and Howard's name popped up by coincidence while I was watching. Apparently, Nintendo was being sued over infringing King Kong's copyright with Donkey Kong, and Howard Phillips dressed up and acted like Donkey Kong in court to demonstrate his differences from King Kong. Imitating a video game monkey in the name of Nintendo... I could see that for Howard.

Bill White states that Mario and Luigi have no last name when the reporter asks them if Mario and Luigi's last name is Mario. Is it still only speculation that their names are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario or is it canon?
Also, surprised to see a young Bill O'Reilly at the end of the video. Wikipedia says he joined the show in 1989 but the guy who posted the video says it came out in 1988.

There was an early issue of Nintendo Power where in the letters section, the last name issue came up. Iirc, the reply was that their last names were indeed Mario, not that NP is the final word, but back then I sure thought they were.

Great video, Ed. Thanks!

I remember seeing an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto that was done within the past couple of years, in which he explained that Mario and Luigi are brothers and their last name is Mario.

My kids watch the old cartoons on Dvd sometimes and someone calls them Mario Mario and Luigi Mario occasionally.

Seeing the cheery old O'Reilly happily talking about "a Nintendo is almost...the most fun a kid can have" puts a smile on my face.

That's the video that got me started along this path, that's also where the quote in the first post comes from. Hooray for DiseasedCarbs and that other guy!
