Hudson Soft for consoles because of what they did for PCE alone(let alone all the great stuff they continue to do).

CAPCOM for arcade because of what they did for the scene in the 80's(let alone all the great stuff they continue to do and have put out on consoles, particulary late 80's early nineties).

The makers of Star Castle, Armor Ambush, Starhawk, Ripoff and other great vector games.
And Atari. The vector games, naturally.

Nintendo #1 is a gimmie.

#2 I would have to say Blizzard. They won't get as much love here as they should - as they never had a lot of success in the console market. But damn - thier PC games are so addictive. Not just one - any of them.

Funny - not a single person so far said Electronic Arts unless i missed a few posts.

sine SNK has alread been said i'm gonna have to say something no one else has said.

Hudson Soft

possibly tied for the greatest company ever with snk. Hudson has made every great game you probebly haven't played for the turbo grafx and PC engine

bonk games
lords of thunder
dynastic hero
neutopia 1 and 2
y's books 1 and 2

they basically are responsible for every good turbo grafx game. and they also made milons secret castle for nes, which i really like, but most people probebly would not.

3rd place would have to go to sega. mainly cause i love the sonic team.

all the shining force games
nights
landstalker: the treasures of king nole (best game ever)

i know when i put a game in and i see the hudson bee, a snk logo, or sonic team presents there is a 99.9% chance i am about to have fun.

Since I only play PC games I won't be putting down the obvious, But Do agree on Nintendo and Sega to be the best for consoies.
Pc games though...

Sierra ( larry, police quest, Kings quest... well U name it they made it :D )
Westwood C&C rocks
EAGames They make some awesome games for the Pc
Ascaron http://www.ascaron.com For making games like patrician Tortuga and Port royale
Sid Meier :hail: :hail: This guy made more Classics than anyone else ( for pc guys .. for pc ) civilization Colonization And Pirates gold( originally for the Amiga )
might be a lot more.. but this is what I came up with

oh yeah .. SSI .. ( rest in pieces ) they made some awesome games .. and then were bought up or out ...

Hard question, a lot of good companies around. But I go for Konami (lots of great NES games, Castlevania series, Gradius series...) and Square (Final Fantasy). They spring into my mind instantly.

Favorite Game Company(s):

Philips/Magnavox - being a huge fan of the Odyssey2, it comes as no surprise to me (or those who know me) that I would lists this duo first. If it wasn't for these dude(s), I would not have had all that fun playing video games during my teenage years. They also really got me going on the Video Game things as a whole (much better than RCA).

Atari - for all the home systems over the years, even though many of them failed far too quickly (in the later years). I still cherish my Atari Lynx collection, and am a fan of the Atari Jaguar, even with it rather limited game library (and good games).

Activision - for being the company to really push the Atari 2600, and also for coming up with BeamRider - one of my favorite games on any system (this thing kicks butt on the Atari Anthology for the GBA).

Interplay - Just for making Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I love this game way too much.

Others...
Sega
Nintendo
Psygnosis
