Today, I pick up my very first arcade unit. It's an Asteroids cab that has been converted to jamma. Picking up a couple of boards with it, as well, including Silkworm. Working coin mechs and everything. The only negs are that the controls are currently swapped (I believe that that should be an easy fix?) and the side art has been painted over (but the orginal marquee and panel overlay are still there). Will post a pic once it comes in.

edit: It used to be an Asteroids but the CP overlay is for Silkworm and it came with a Marquee for said game. It's in overall good shape:

Hey, congrats on the pick-up! There have been some nice arcade sales in the classifieds lately so keep those eyes open for machine two. Lets see those pictures.

Pictures have been inserted in the first post. The machine's in overall good condition and needs a few minor tweeks (one joystick needs replacement, need to mess around with the monitor convergence, overlay probably should be replaced, need a bezel). The last two are merely for asthetic reasons and are not 100% necessary. The cabinet is solid with no water damage. Included with the cab were:

Silk Worm Marquee
Asteroids Marquee and replacement overlay
two rotary joysticks (one's missing a board, though)
assorted daughter boards for the monitor
3 boards (Silk Worm, The Main Event, and .50 Calibur [which is DOA but was included free]

Welcome to the club, I'm a recent 1st-time owner myself. Looks really nice, how much did ya pay for it?

Sweetness. How's the monitor, any burn-in and do the colors look good? What plans do you have from here: use as a JAMMA or turn back to an original Asteroids? You could make a new control panel and swap between them for various games, just modulate the wiring to accompany the desirable I/O of the control panel.

There's an Asteroids cab for sale up in Richmond, no price though and it's coming from someone’s extensive arcade collection (possibly an old venue owner?). Claims in be in working condition but can't provide pictures so driving that far just to "see" isn't worth the travel unless I was on my way up there for other things.

There's a bit of burn in but it's not too bad. The colors looks good and sharp. Going to replace the right joy and swap the controls back (they're currently reversed) but other than that, probably not going to have to mess with much on it for awhile. Still need to swap in the other working board but I've been having too much fun with Silk Worm (finally cleared the first level but I suck at the game).

edit: I'm keeping it a JAMMA machine and will probably throw a JPAC in there. I intend to redo all the artwork on it, too.

Check and see if the wires going to the joysticks go to "quick jacks" -- if they do you should be able to just swap them and fix the reversed joysticks.

I just checked and they're soldered on. Could I just remove the wires, scrape off the solder and use attack quick connects to the wires and rerun them? It seems like it work to me but I have very little experience with cp wiring.

edit: Will it make any difference that the controls use leaf switches?

So the wires run directly from the joysticks to the PCB (or, more correctly, the JAMMA harness)? Sometimes there are quick connections between point A and point B.

If that's not the case, you'll either have to desolder those wires, or cut them/swap them/reconnect them.
