Does anyone recognize this cabinet? I'm wondering what it was originally.

That's a generic Dynamo "Z-Back" cabinet. They were sold without games in them.

In the (I think) early-to-mid 90's, Dynamo started selling generic cabinets pre-wired for JAMMA boards. I remember lots of them having that same funky shape on the back side, and I remember seeing black, blue and red ones (I'm sure they came in dozen other colors, or were painted over the years).

EDIT: I should mention that Dynamo had a zillion different cab designs and this was just one of them. I'm trying to find a picture for 100% verification but I'm sure that's what it is.

EDIT2: Here's one that someone used for a Neo Geo setup:

Here's another one:

Yeah that is a Dynamo cab no doubt. I have one in a more traditional shape, they're nice and big.

Yes, 99% of these were Marvel vs. whoever. It's a standard Dynamo cab. I think it's model # is HS-3? The HS-5 is the "standard" diamond-edge dynamo cab you most often see nowadays. The one you are posting about is a poor design, try and access the floor of the cabinet sometime. And removal of the monitor board? Worse. I don't care for the design on those too much, thus the reason why I don't own one.

Indeed.

This cabinet must have been designed by someone who did not realize you need to have full access to the entire inside of an arcade cabinet.

I own a Z-back (actually I own that very blue one in Flack's post). And I am confused about who actually made that cabinet, I've read it's Dynamo and I've read it's made by a company called 3KOAM. I can't find any references to either company on my cabinet.

They were definitely sold by Dynamo, although they may have been assembled by someone else. Or maybe 3KOAM was a reseller of Dynamo cabinets. I'm sure you've seen this:

I would kind of like to own a Z-back just for nostalgia's sake. I remember going to one of the local arcades and seeing a bunch of blue ones all lined up with different fighting games in them.

3KOAM is also the manufacturer of the Big Red Neo Geo cabs. I don't know if they also did the Golds, but the big reds are a MUCH more well-planned design. Also, whay a Z-back? Who ever looks at the BACK (or profile) of a machine, especially in a dark, machines jammed together, arcade atmosphere? Not exactly on the ball with that one, I think.

If you are ever in the area with spare room in a truck, I'll give you a good deal on it. ;)
