View Full Version : NAVA Gamer's Meeting, June 27th (NOW WITH PHOTOS AND VIDEO)

NAVA = North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados. It's FREE, and YOU are invited to attend. This is a monthly event opened to the public and hosted by NAVA members. Game systems are set up around the store, members bring their own goods to swap or sell, and the place is generally transformed into an "open house" for gamers.
Previously at NAVA...
- The store was visited by friends from Canada, including long-time DP forum moderator "Lady Jaye" and guide editor "Sly DC".
- A surprise visit by ColecoVision programmer extraordinaire Eduardo Mello (Opcode Games).
- A plethora of very unusual game systems were put out to play, including MSX and SG-1000.
- Chris brought the full-size arcade controller for Pop 'N Music which was played between sessions of the original Konami Guitar Freaks on an import PS2.
- Many games and systems traded hands between attendees. A "top 10" kinda day in this regard.
- Pictures and video tell it best:

We'll be doing a new version of the NAVA signature "Random Retro" tournament at 6pm. We're hopeful that last years' champion will be there to defend but regardless, the title is on the line! If you think you're a good Atari 2600 player, be sure to get yourself into the tourney, sign-ups at 5pm.
Get ready for another NAVA. Game ON!
When: Saturday, June 27th, noon to midnight.
Where: Digital Press Videogames: http://tinyurl.com/yscakm
What happens: Gaming, trading, tournaments, big prizes! Attendance is FREE. Half price for kids!
What can I bring?: Snacks, soda and beer are always appreciated. Cakes have been very popular as well.

hey, I've never actually been to one of these before. it's funny because I live a couple blocks away and I've only been in the store twice. I'll probably drop by after work then. I'm hoping for some GH/RB action.

I make no promises at this time, but shall begin seeing if a trip out is possible this month. Hate to lose the crown just because I was unable to attend!

I hope you can make it. If you are still on a 2600 kick, I'll give you free games out of my box if I have any you need.
Never played the Atari before, guess this will be he first time. Blasphemy! (haha, it looks like Sniderman beat me to it)

That's about right. This one's usually over in under an hour unless there's a knock-down-drag-out final like Warlords, but that's happened only once in the 6 times we've run this one.
Looking forward to meeting you!

I plan on going to this, my first one. If anyone has any spare Famicom or Famicom Disk System games, please bring them. I just won a Twin Famicom on eBay and I want to see if you guys have games before paying the high exportation prices. If I remember, I'll probably bring my Turbo Grafx 16 if anyone wants to use it. Also, I never go anywhere without my modded PSP, so that's coming too.

Now that it's officially summer, 2600 and I should be there on Saturday. I'll have my box of goodies along with the leftover Press Start T-Shirts and DVD's and a bag of pretzels of course.
I also got an extra unopened copy of Ghostbusters for the 360, so I'll bring it because I haven't had a chance to take it back to GameStop yet, they wouldn't let me cancel my other pre-order so I got two of them.

It is only two days away and there isn't much chatter. Everyone make sure to practice for the tourney! I always tell myself I will beforehand, but it has yet to actually happen. I'm hoping all of the 2600 veterans can make it - CX2K, Stonic, killersquirrel, Kid Ice and especially Sniderman.
I'll be looking to pick up Neo-Geo controllers/sticks and possibly other arcade boards and assorted goodies. I am also looking for an official clear green Xbox system and official Xbox component cables.

Sorry to disappoint but I can't make it again this month. Will try - again - next month. I hereby relinquish the Retro-Crown to the skilled winner from this weekend's tourney. Good luck!

I will bring these games with me tomorrow and Frankie sent me a PM stating that he would bring Buzz! Master Quiz for the PSP which supports 4 player play with one disc. Send me a PM if there are any other multiplayer PSP or DS games any of you want to play.
I am looking to buy the following games:

Well I have some fantastic news ladies and gentlemen- I will be there tomorrow..... for a short period of time. I have some other things to catch up with that day.
It has been about 3 months since I've been to a NAVA but it will be great to catch up with everyone on how they are doing.
I'll have some items with me to seel, just games (isn't that surprising?)
including
Mortal Kombat vs DC (Xbox 360)
Guitar Hero II & III (Xbox 360)
and a couple more.
Count me in.

BTW, I'm also bringing King of Fighters - The Orochi Saga if anyone has that too.

We've got a pretty cool line-up today.
Mike set up our store PS3 with loads of PS Store games (over 20) and this is a 60 gig so anything PlayStation is all set up to play.
Frankie is bringing a laptop that we'll hook up to the second monitor, loaded up with DAPHNE, so we'll be playing some Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Cliff Hanger, Cobra Command, etc.
Both of these are firsts at NAVA.
Per Pedro's request, I've ripped a nice 2-hour set of SID music, so if you've never experienced the joy of the Commodore 64 music, I've picked two dozen tracks of personal favorites. You won't believe it's that 64K computer doing this.
See ya's later!

Oooooo, DAPHNE. I'm going to be rocking the Space Ace and I know 2600 is going to want to play through Cliff Hanger.

I uploaded my Game Boy Camera pictures before the actual meeting is over [a personal record for me] at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2139602&id=26107746&l=4f05f348a8. My good friend Steven [limeibook86] is going to post a ton of pictures he took on his digital camcorder soon. Matt Papa [Osaka] made some kick butt bead sprites that he brought to the meeting and I took a ton of pictures of them. They came out looking really cool because of the low quality of my camera with the Nintendo borders. Be sure look into having him do a commission for you so you can have your favorite video game character come to life [I know I will!].
I couldn't make it to this one, been a busy month for me. Will try to make it to the next one =]

Oh yes, I took over 245 photos, I narrowed it down to 211 to post on my web gallery. You can check them out here:

I had a great time, I was the one in the blue Sonic & Tails (Sonic 2 opening) shirt. It was great seeing everyone and what they had for sale. I have some videos that I took with my HD camcorder, I'll post those tomorrow since I don't have the FireWire cable with me at the moment.
Matt (Osaka) had some awesome bead sprites! I ended up buying a Dig Dug character from him, if I had more cash on me I would of snagged some more! The Mario, Luigi, and DK Jr. were amazing, they were really tempting!!
It was great seeing you all again, another fantastic NAVA! :D

NAVA was great. With the trades I brought in, I got a boxed Atari XE system, like new Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive in box, 5 Atari 800 games, 2 Famicom carts, and The first 50 issues of 2600 Collection.....for $20 cash! I had about $140 in credit!
I got to meet some awesome people and had one of the best days of my life.....until I lost to a girl in Air-Sea Battle. I've gotten made fun of when I said it to my friend, but hey, she was better than me. It caused a nice laugh when I said that though, because it was embarrasing at first. But, I lost with honor and that's the best way to do so.
I hope to put some dough aside to come to another NAVA. It was great!
BTW, Chris, how'd you get those Game Boy Camera pics on Facebook. That's cool that you can do that.

He only made it to the final 4. Steve beat him in Surround (great beat and I can dance to it) then faced Stephanie in the final. I've discovered today that Stephanie wasn't just a fluke walk-in customer, either. Shoulda known that - no one handles biplanes in Combat that well without plenty of flight time.
Hopefully she'll join us here and share her history.
PS Photos and video added, though not properly captioned yet. I enjoy these "small" NAVAs more than the big blow-out ones sometimes, since I get to actually TALK to people. Late night, long night... I should have captions plugged in sometime tomorrow.

@Osaka: *sniff* I'm going to miss you, man! I'm glad that we had a chance to meet. I was in a rush yesterday(NY Buses are very finicky) so I didn't get a chance to wish you luck on this journey. You are a very talented individual and believe me, you seem destined for success. Just keep your eyes on the prize, your head up, and your mind clear, and you shall go as far as you want to go. Just send us a postcard and some pictures from Akihabara! I always wondered whether it's true that the Japanese ACTUALLY sell machines full of used panties. BTW, I've been spreading the word about your site, so hopefully you'll have a few more customers.
@DigitalPress(Joe) : Brother, it was truly my honor to meet you. I always hear about you. You are a legend, a folk hero. I finally get to meet you and you were everything I expected. You are like a big brother to all of us. Your store is a wonderland. I've been there before sure, but never during this. That day will be forever a favorite memory. I will always cherish that day forever. I will be at many more(I hope), but like a date, you never forget your first NAVA. Words cannot fully express how much yesterday meant to me befriending such a person as you. You are one of a kind and I wish you much happiness and success.
@supergoldzero: You were truly the highlight of my day besides meeting Joe. I NEVER get friendly with someone that quickly. I'm usually a somewhat shy person. But, it felt natural talking to you. You are a very cool person and I can safely say that I've definitely made a friend yesterday. Anytime you want to chat, let me know. It was great getting to know you and I hope I'm able to see you at more meetings. Keep up the cool Game Boy Camera pics!
@everyone else I met yesterday: You all are a tremendous bunch that took this shy person and made him a people person. You took this man and made him one of yours. I'm proud to say that I come from Digital Press because of nice and truly awesome people like you. Every single one of you made yesterday special for me and that's what I will remember the most: the lot of you guys that made it there yesterday. Talking about the old times and our passion for the simple things is a great feeling. I hope to see you all at future NAVA's and hey, maybe I won't suck at the tournament next time.
@Pedro: Sorry again for not owning a Commordore 64. But, if it makes you feel any better, I bought an Atari XE Game System.

It was nice to meet you too Johnny! I'm Chris's friend, the one in the blue Sonic 2 shirt. Wow I had a great time!
I rescued a "Broken" Game Gear from the bargain bin. It turns out it works pretty well, just that half of the screen is a tad darker, still I think it's pretty cool. I also picked up two Commodore cassettes from the bargain bin in the off-chance that they'll work with my Colecovision Adam computer. For 49 cents each I think it's a fair gamble haha.
After getting two shirts I also got a boxed Game Genie for Game Gear, I remember my older brother having one when I was younger, so it definitely brings me back!

My memory is even worse - I've already forgotten the 4 games I played! I played Dragster first, and I don't remember the name of my opponent (sorry). I played Surround with Mike, and Combat Two with Stephanie, but I can't recall the other game I played.
Whatever it was, I remember that after my opponent lost, I continued playing the game out, doing fine (Wizard of Wor!) until Stephanie sat down next to me, at which point I immediately died. Her aura preceeded her! :)
Steph, where were you when I was just a lonely male videogamer in a world that lacked female videogamers?????
As for my match with Mike, I think that if he'd had one more beer, I'd have been toast. I never played such a tense, pulse-raising match of Surround (of all things!) before.
I had a blast, thanks everyone.

Whew! Where did all of this LOVE come from?
@DigitalPress(Joe) : Brother, it was truly my honor to meet you. I always hear about you. You are a legend, a folk hero. I finally get to meet you and you were everything I expected. You are like a big brother to all of us. Your store is a wonderland. I've been there before sure, but never during this. That day will be forever a favorite memory. What I filter IN here is "favorite memory". That is what I set out and continue to strive to do for fellow gamers. I'm glad you enjoyed your first NAVA... they all seem to have their own stories and personality. Yeah, I know, sounds like I'm writing a book about it. I am not - despite rumors you may have heard from close friends or family. Or me.

Whether repair or fashion style is your thing, it's good to see this stuff go to a CARING home.
That's right. Man, my memory is failing fast!
I hope I never get to be your age, whatever that is :)
No, I saw her playing Dragon's Lair (I think)...definitely not a fluke.
Slipped under the RADAR with me. There are quite a few pictures though, so it seems she was noticed before the tournament began. Funny thing - when I began the event it was "EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF" until I read far enough to see a "Stephanie" there.
As for my match with Mike, I think that if he'd had one more beer, I'd have been toast. I never played such a tense, pulse-raising match of Surround (of all things!) before.
I can't say it was THE most intense DP Store battle ever, because I've seen some of the local kids wrestle back and forth on various Smash Bros. tournaments and they're genuinely fun to watch. I've even got photos where fans cheered from the back with banners. As silly as that sounds, it's fun. But as a devotee of the classics, I'd much rather cheer a tight game of Surround, and you guys put on a clinic, complete with intentional, conjoined spaces that would make any but the most veteran players panic. One of those "too bad there could be only one winner" brawls.
-The chick that was taking all the pics, you did an awesome job! Great pictures.
"The chick" is probably Nicole, who has a great artistic eye. Some of each month's photos are mine and I'm quite sure they are immediately obvious because they're the same "front of the store guys talking or two people playing with a bunch of people behind them" shots. Go ahead, just carve out my epitaph now.
-Joe (store owner) thanks for having us all there, glad theres still a place to go for vintage gaming. Also thank you for the gamegear batery cover, i got home and realized it was the wrong one so Ill be back to see if u have the right one. <---play on words
As old as I am, still not wise enough. In the back of my mind I thought "just give him both" because I pay nothing for them and they're all salvaged from destroyed Game Genies. Instead I ask "as you look at it from behind, which side is broken" and expectd the answer to be the final answer. Bad job on my part, I'll make it good.

Whether repair or fashion style is your thing, it's good to see this stuff go to a CARING home.
Love always accompanies classic video games. ;)
Haha, well I am more gifted in repairing things rather then my sense of fashion. I have too many Game Gear systems already, but what drew me in was the subtle differences in the color of this model's case. It will be loved indeed, it's already been used with my new Game Genie too. Wonderful little device actually! (Seems it's a newer Majesco model due to it's jet black color)
And if you ever have some spare Game Gear battery covers I'd be willing to throw a few dollars your way. Even if just to make the Game Gear more comfortable to hold haha. :) Thanks again for hosting such a great event!

Hey guys and girls, it was nice meeting you all. Even though I forgot almsot everyones name. I swear I have the memory of a goldfish!
-Johnny Blaze you rock, and we must meet up for the Bonk game. Hyper scan is pretty cool, my stepdaughter likes it.
-The chick that was taking all the pics, you did an awesome job! Great pictures.
-The dude that made the donkey kong cake, major props to you, that cake not only looked awesome but tasted great too.
-Joe (store owner) thanks for having us all there, glad theres still a place to go for vintage gaming. Also thank you for the gamegear batery cover, i got home and realized it was the wrong one so Ill be back to see if u have the right one. <---play on words
-The tournament was cool even though I lasted about 30 seconds cause I had no idea what the hell I was doing in that bootleg mario bros game.
-To whoever bought the sliders you rock, thank you!
-To the girl at the counter who went and got me a dr. pepper you saved my taste buds, hopefully someday I can return the favor and get you something to drink.
-to everyone I missed, it was a blast to be there and hope to see you all next month.

For the Bonk, just give me an offer, send a money order and it's yours.
For the sliders, it was me, Chris, and...I forget who else, but there was someone else too. I live in Elizabeth and the closest White Castle is in the Elmora section which is far when I walk or take a bus, so I had a crave. Of course, that came back to haunt me the next morning....
The Donkey Kong cake was made by this one chick. I think she was someone's fiancee...
The chick taking the pics was Nicole. She works at the store. What sucked about that was that's one of the reasons I went to NAVA, to meet her. I was going to ask her out but I found out she was 17, so I didn't want to be another Jerry Lawler(wrestling fans would probably get that joke, for those that don't, he's famous for dating people nearly 3 times younger than him). I mean c'mon! She actually likes games and stuff like that, other than my ex, I can't find another girl that actually likes what I like. But, hey...
For the tournament, I was serious. I was lucky I made it to the second round. I barely pulled the first victory off. I barely survived Combat. I never played the plane part before so I didn't know squat. Sometimes for Combat, controls are swapped from what I remember, and I saw the red plane was kinda flying awkward and in the heat of the moment, I thought it was mine. It was only about 20 seconds before the end of the match, that I realized that I was the OTHER plane. Needless to say, there was no way in hell I was going to win. It was kind of embarrassing at first. I lost to a chick in front of all these men...IN AN ATARI GAME! I didn't mind because that's happened a lot with a few friends back in the day, but I thought I was going to be the laughing stock. But, when a couple others fell because of her, I felt better. All in all, it was fun though.
But, my favorite food that day was the cupcakes. I know this chick named Lisette(I think that was her name) made them. If she is on this forum or someone here knows her, can you please ask her for the recipe? I forgot and I want to make them for my aunt and grandfather, although, they'd probably hate them.
BTW, Osaka: This was the pic I was talking about at NAVA:

BTW, Joe: Just looking at the NAVA pics. Props for the Jimmy Hart Megaphone!

I hope I never get to be your age, whatever that is :)
I can't remember myself now...I'm already losing track of time.

Lisette, Frankie's girl, usually makes the baked treats. She made the cupcakes...I think Pedro's girl made the DK cake.

@Digital Press: This is the second Nava meeting I went to, but the first time in my previous 5 trips to the store where I got to meet you. I've seen you on Collect This, the ET video, and some other videos digital press related, but never in person. I never had a bad trip and I'm lucky I found out about this place because of how well stocked and how helpful the store is.
The first time I ever went was because I had bought an NES 2 but no rf switch. So I went to current gen game stores in the mall and see if they could help. They couldn't but one of the managers told me about Digital Press. I went, and got it... along with games.... sorry digressed a little.
If you remember from the day, I was the guy that traded in KISS Pinball and Who Wants to be a millionare for the pc along with others, and got 2 boxed nes games and one loose. Thanks to a lucky find, I was able to get a game that my uncle and father had lost when they were a child called Caveman Games on NES, however they lost the commodore64 version. We just played it yesterday for a father's day celebration because we couldn't do it last week and my grandfather, uncle, and dad said it was the best fathers day yet.
Whenever I need to get something "old school" video game related, I usually go to Digital Press if Play N Trade doesn't have it (which usually they don't). Hope to become a regular a NAVA meetings, and once again a pleasure meeting you Joe.

Hey guys had an awesome time at my first NAVA meeting! Sorry didn't get a chance to chat with anyone, I'm kinda shy around people I don't really know. Plus I was kinda just overwhelmed by all the vintage gaming goodness.
I'm the girl in the 2600 tournament who made it to the final round. Atari 2600 is actually one of my favorite machines so I kinda knew what I was getting myself into...heh...
Whoever set up Dragon's Lair and all the other Laser Disc games rocks. And those bead sprite art characters were excellent!
Nice job with the Gameboy camera photos too. I've seen some cool animations done with that device.
I hope to make it to another NAVA meet, though I rarely have a Saturday that I have off from work. I'll definitely be coming back though soon, that place was oozing greatness!

But, in all seriousness: Great job and welcome!
If I may say so myself, you are a fine young lass and it was a pleasure to meet you. Don't worry about the shyness, I am too, but I did great. Just like me you made an impact and made some new friends as well. As far as the Laserdisc stuff, I think it was Frankie that brought it. I'm impressed too, so much in fact that I'm actually in the process of downloading it so I can have it too.
The Game Boy Camera was Chris'. I'm still wondering how he put it on Facebook. I saw the pics from NAVA, you look beautiful.
Am I smitten? You better believe it. I don't know, I guess it's loneliness, combined with the fact that you are a games master. Oh God, I think I'm slowly starting to get soft. SOMEBODY STOP ME!(The Mask for those wondering about the joke).
BTW, I know she has a boyfriend, guys. Doesn't mean that I can't say I like someone...

Thanks John I think you were the only one I talked too. haha. I thought you were a regular there, however I thought you told me it was your first time I just felt like I misunderstood you or something because it seemed like you knew everyone.
The funny part about my boyfriend is he knows nothing about gaming prior to Super Nintendo, and really doesn't have an interest in it. I'm sure it's usually the other way around when guys come in there I bet the girl is the one doesn't get it. maybe?

Thanks, Sugar.
Joe helped me with that. I'm a little more outgoing because at a new function, I usually bust my ass trying to make a lasting impression. But, it's hard because I'm very critical of how people are going to see me. I usually get the reaction that I'm weird because I'm very mature and knowledgeable for my age. But, it was nice to be somewhere where that was appreciated and even encouraged!
But, I found you because you seemed a little lonely there and I hate seeing people like that. It breaks my heart because I'm that way a lot(when I talk about girlfriend, I mean a girl that's my friend, not the other way). But, I'm determined not to let other people feel like that, and I guess that defines my character.
If you ever want to chat, feel free to send me a message. I'm always here.

The Game Boy Camera was Chris'. I'm still wondering how he put it on Facebook.
He used a GameBoy Player with his GameCube, then he hooked that up to a video capture device. Importing the display of the images onto his Mac. Then he took the stills from the video and uploaded them to Facebook.
I just picked up a GameCube GameBoy Player. It was at gamestop for only $10! :) I can see how it comes in handy!

Was it like the one I saw at my local GameStop where the disc had no case and was thrown in there or did the disc come with a case?

Haha, actually yes it was. I forced them to open it to look at the disc, even though the employee mad a big deal out of it saying that they aren't supposed to do that. The disc had some light scratches, but nothing major. At other places I saw the discs in paper/plastic sleeves. So your milage may vary, although I have yet to test mine I'm sure it'll be okay. :)

I am sorry for my delayed response, I got caught up in my job and game playing as per usual.
Whew! Where did all of this LOVE come from?
I must say I really agree with Joe on this. I am so happy to see so much bonding going on post NAVA. I can never be surprised though, with the Digital Press store becoming better every day that passes by. I know I have gushed enough about the store already, but Joe, thank you SO much for making such a wonderful store and supporting the community to the extent you have. I have met so many wonderful people going to these NAVA meetings over the last year.

My buddy Stevie already answered this, but the only use of my digital capture device these days is to extract my Game Boy Camera pictures [especially because i just bought my first digital camcorder/camera today, wow I am actually caught up to modern times!]. I have been taking Game Boy Pictures since the first NAVA I went to [Feb 08] and they have become a nice conversation piece.
Nice job with the Gameboy camera photos too. I've seen some cool animations done with that device.
Thanks a bunch! I am sorry we did not meet you at the meeting or witness the major stir you caused at the tournament [i sure heard it though]. I have been meaning to make more movies with my Game Boy Camera, especially now that I have three of them so expect to see them at upcoming meetings!
On a completely unrelated note, has anyone bought Blazblue: Calamity Trigger this week? I just got in the mail tonight and I cannot wait to bust it open to give it a whirl!

I don't have a 360, so no. But I'm hearing that it is very good. A spiritual successor to Guilty Gear.
