View Full Version : The Things you hate most about Microsoft

Yeah you never really saw official sales numbers on this board until Nintendo started selling more units, then you saw a thread every damn month.
Completely untrue. There were similar discussions in the Saturn/PS1 era and in the Dreamcast/PS2 battle. It happens anytime people are passionate about a particular system or manufacturer. Personally, I could care less about sales numbers or even the manufacturers themselves so long as I have plenty of consoles and games to choose from that cover all the bases.

Vista gets a bad rap
I agree. I've been using Vista Home Premium x64 for a little over a year and haven't had any problems. This computer is faster than my previous Windows XP computer in every way and I don't remember either computer ever crashing.

My PC ran much faster with XP. Now I do like Vista better due to the fact that it has better optioins of opening stuff. I like the Start menu search bar to search your computer files, etc, and the fact that I could have a side bar in the start menu to open all my favorite folders as well as the usual pin your stuff up on the left side, but that was already there.
What I don't like is how I had to optimize Vista in order for it to run alot faster and I still think XP ran better. Vista takes alot longer to load up the program when starting the service.

But since you said my post was "completely untrue", I must be wrong.
I don't know what you consider a long time, but I was on here from the very beginning (although this is the second account I have had on the site since I got out of collecting for a while in the late 90s) and prior to that on the other sites and newsgroups where people from DP posted from the early-90s on and there was always lively discussion about the newer systems and how they were selling, as well as posting of stats of Japanese and US sales numbers of consoles and games. Knowing the numbers of games sold is helpful to game collectors like us, especially since it has an impact on how rare a game might be down the road. Of course, you don't have to take my word for it, you could actually do a search and you'd find lots of threads going back to 2002 where people are reporting console and game sale numbers as the topic.
I'll agree with you that rampant fanboyism is a newer addition to this board, but frankly, there were zealots when Sega was still a console maker and there has always been a large Nintendo fanboy contingent on DP, possibly because a lot of classic gamers and collectors became Nintendo fans as they got older and the US manufacturers got out of the business. I do find great irony in the fact that you are lamenting the rise of console sales numbers as a thread topic in a thread devoted to hating Microsoft.

If your computer takes two minutes to go from the Dell logo to the XP logo, then there is something SERIOUSLY WRONG with your computer. Mine can play computer games for only so long without crashing, and it still only takes about half a second to get from the Dell screen to the XP screen.

No. Dell takes 2 seconds, XP takes 30 to 45. Still, my Vista loads in 23 seconds. Fast like the drive thru! (SARCASM)

the only thing I hate about Microsoft games is the fact that not all of them end up getting ported to the PC... the ones that do are great, but PC gamers have still missed out on some great XBOX/360 games because of that crap... fortunately though, the ones we've missed out on have been very few overall
Rallisport Challenge 2
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Forza Motorsport
Forza Motorsport 2
Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise
Viva Pinata: Party Animals
these are the only ones I know of that never got ported to the PC yet, and prolly never will... so no big loss, but still annoying... especially since Crimson Skies began on the PC, and Rallisport Challenge is still the best rally racing game on the PC, IMHO... otherwise I wouldn't care much about the exclusions

If you run Vista on a computer from 2003, it'll be slower than XP...just like if you run OS X 10.5 on a Mac G4 from 2003, it'll be slower than OS X 10.2.
Traditionally, new operatings systems require more powerful hardware. The upcoming OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and Windows 7 are the exceptions.
I bought a new Core 2 Quad tower a year ago and it runs Vista faster than my previous Pentium 4 tower ran XP.

MS is in an alternate universe. At least Nintendo follows an actual monetary system by going by 10s, such as the cards having 2000 points. While MS? 800. Not a whole lot, and it's a weird point system when everything is MORE than 800! :grrr:

Internet Explorer isn't as good as Firefox(add-on options and crap) but it has more compatibility with your average site and loads slightly faster when changing sites. I use Firefox because it owns, but I thought I'd let that out there as Internet Explorer is actually pretty good.

As someone who is taught in computer repair, the biggest pet peeve for me is how it seems that with every new Windows version, it gets WORSE instead of better. Take a look at all the problems with Vista. That's why a lot of people I know stuck with XP. Yeah, they make improvements. But, it seems that with these improvements, 90 million NEW problems pop up.
Also, the fact that Windows is a HUGE target for spyware, adware, viruses, worms, you name it. It's as if Windows is a dirty whore and with each log on to the internet, you run the risk of catching something.
Luckily for me, I ALWAYS keep my firewall on. I only had 1 problem where I had to reinstall Windows in the year and a half I've owned this.
But, for the average person with little to no knowledge, they don't know how to keep the computer clean. I mean, for the grandma checking emails from her grandkids, all she knows is that it's supposed to work. I just wish that instead of releasing half-finished OS's to get quick money, they take the time and make a FULL OS! One that works WITHOUT INCIDENT!
I would've been a Mac user. My ex used to use it at work and I was impressed that she had NO CRASHES. But, a lot of programs that I regularly use don't support Mac.
But, as we know, Microsoft is a bunch of greedy bastards who just cut corners and release something and wonder why everyone complains when their products don't work.
Don't believe me?
Just remember how Microsoft cheaped out on the 360 and ONLY NOW are starting to make them correctly so we don't red-ring.

Windows has the most viruses because 85% of computers run Windows. If everyone switched to Mac, then Macs would have the most viruses.
Regarding crashes and BSODs, I haven't experienced either one since I started using XP in 2003 and Vista in 2008. Windows 95 and 98 were unstable, yes, but XP and Vista run perfectly fine...at least for me.
And to those who say Macs never crash, you obviously haven't used them in a production environment eight hours a day, five days a week. Trust me, they crash.

Unless you're using a version of Windows from ten years ago, you shouldn't experience crashes or "blue screens of death," at least not regularly enough to complain about it. I've used Windows and Mac computers equally, on a daily basis since 2003 and they both crash on occasion.
The whole "Windows is a glitchy mess that constantly crashes" argument hasn't been relevant since 2002. Today, both operating systems are so similar that one isn't vastly superior to the other. When Windows 7 and OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) come out this fall, the gap will be even narrower.
Regarding viruses, again, I use Windows computers every day and I never get a virus. Why? Because I don't open strange attachments or visit shady web sites. I also don't download torrents or files from peer-to-peer networks. In other words, I'm careful and smart about the way I operate my computers.
It's like driving a car: if you don't know what you're doing and start driving off the road and doing all sorts of inappropriate things, you'll crash and damage the car, but if you obey the rules and watch where you're going and drive carefully, you'll be fine.
Regarding "moving slow," you're right: Vista runs slowly on a computer from 2003...but so do Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5. Try running "Tiger" or "Leopard" on a Mac G4 from 2003. You'll want to pull your hair out before long.

Actually, I have a G4 from 2000 which I upgraded to a 1 GHz processor and 1 gig of RAM (not exactly high end by any means or even close to the low end iMacs today) and it runs Tiger blazingly fast. Although I use both a PC and a Mac on a regular basis, I still think there are some significant advantages to OSX and the Mac platform in general. The virus issue is huge and you would be surprised how elaborate and devious some of them have become on the PC, even for a super careful user. Windows also seems to break itself more frequently than OSX, especially if you are installing or removing software. There have been several times where I have been forced to reinstall Windows or major components as a result of legitimate software uninstalling itself and taking some critical files with it. Simple things like having a license from Adobe to make PDFs in most major Mac applications is super useful. I also just generally prefer the interface.
You are correct though that neither platform really crashes on a regular basis anymore. Still, having overseen large editing and graphics suites used for daily television production with both Mac and PC systems, the Mac still seems to have the edge in overall stability.

That's weird. One of the computers I use is a 2 GHz G5 iMac from 2005 with 1 GB of RAM, running OS 10.4, and it's torture for me. Then again, I'm not using the iMac for simple home use, I use it for web and print production and run Photoshop, QuarkXPress, Excel, etc. simultaneously.

I agree. OS X's Preview program is very handy for creating and converting PDFs.
I also just generally prefer the interface (of OS X).
I agreed with you until OS X 10.4. I thought 10.0-10.3 looked great. The subtle pinstripes looked clean and sleek. But the brushed-metal look in 10.4 looks horrible and now with 10.5, everything is just chunky solid gray, reminiscent of the old GeoWorks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BBENS412.png) DOS GUI. I hate it and think, for once, Windows actually looks much prettier and sleeker (Vista and Windows 7).
