View Full Version : Have you beaten all 32 levels of Super Mario Bros.?

Just like the question asks. I was reminded of this when I made another attempt last night (I lost steam in World 5 and took my last breath in World 6-1). I've only been able to accomplish it once, and that time I only had one live left over. But I've talked to some people who have never beaten Super Mario Bros. completely, or just use warp pipes to get to the end.
So, have you beaten it all?

Indeed I have beaten them all, although not on the original NES cart. I've played through them all on the SMB Deluxe cart for the GBC.

I know I've beaten all the levels, but in one sitting? Definitely not. Tried to beat the Lost Levels (both NES and SNES versions) without warps, but I think I made it to 2-1 before giving up? I dare say it may be TOO difficult!

I'm gonna go ahead and say it, I don't think I ever beat SMB...I can't remember if I have so I'ma say I havn't.

I'm not sure I've actually beaten it either. 2 and 3 yes.
<random aside>
Ever since watching Arino try them on Gamecenter CX I've wanted to give them a go. Then I saw the special on "lost levels" (of course, Super Mario 2 to them) where a fan sent a video on how to beat it. They were so impressed they brought him to play it on the show - and he beats it one shot without losing a life.
It's very impressive, if you can find a way to see it :D

Hell, I don't know if I can do the unlimited 1-ups trick on SMB1. I've never found the right timing to first stomp on the Koopa to set it up.

Umm, yeah, no problem. In under half an hour too. I usually don't even die until I get to World 8 something. I didn't think it was that big of a deal.

I've beaten them all a few times though I've beaten the game far more than that using the world four warp zone.

Not a very difficult game, maybe when I was a young kid I had trouble. I've played through it all before probably a few times or so too.

Too many times to count. It's one of the most popular games of all-time in Japan. I think most people of my generation managed to finish it.

I voted multiple times. It's the only game I had for the longest time so you start to get to know it inside and out. I'm still no good at getting multiple lives off the turtle comming down the staris though. I always manage to hit it wrong and loose a life.

I typically did the warps to get to the end but one time I did go through the whole game. Took a couple continues but I pulled it off.
In comparison, I've never beaten SMB3.

only mario I've beaten is mario 64 and I didn't beat it 100% (forget how many stars there are. Almost beaten mario 3 for nes get to the end and die every time :( never beat but played super mario world many times and of course the first mario.
I remember one time when one of my high school cronies and I ran into each other up at the university a few years after we graduated from high school. He was late to his calculus class (he commuted) and the teacher had already closed the door, so he decided that he would come back to my dorm and play some NES, as he had an hour or so to kill. We decided to play Super Mario Bros, he went first and lost a life in world 1 by doing something stupid, and then I played a solid round until world 4 or 5, and then lost a life, throwing the game back to him (alternating turns between Mario and Luigi).
Yes, I have beaten the game countless times. When I was younger, I felt the game was pretty difficult, and could barely get out of 1-2, later I could barely make it by 4-3, etc. However, I have been playing this game since I was 3 so by now it is no problem for me. However, if I play Super Mario Bros. 2, there is no guarantee that I will make it to the end. ;)

Yeah, I've done it more times than I can count (definitely more times with the warp zone though)...even in the arcade "Vs." SMB (but not too many times). Vs. Super Mario Bros. is a much more difficult game and the "100 men" trick doesn't work the same. World 6-3 takes SMB to a whole new level (and everyone that's played it, knows what I'm talking about).

I haven't even beaten the game let alone all the levels. Perhaps I will thanks to this topic though.
It doesn't take that long to run through all the levels in SMB. The Lost Levels, however, is a different story and I was only able to do that on the All-Stars cart where you can save your progress.

I remember beating it at least once, I think with warps. Not really sure if I've beaten it multiple times, possibly.

I've done it a few times myself, not recently though, just those times I said heck I want to go through all of SMB1's worlds. Haven't gotten the urge since the last time I did so 2 years ago.

Once, when I was younger, I managed to beat all 32 levels on a single life. Never died once... and the crazy thing, is that I really believed I could do it. Never had tried it before, but I just wanted to prove to myself that it was possible. I guess believing in yourself is even more important than skill.
But that's not always the case. After I did that, I REALLY believed it was possible (and I'm sure it is) to beat SMB2 (Doki Doki version) on a single life. I managed to make it to World 5-2 before finally dying... so I guess skill is kind of a necessity too. Never did try it again though. Wasn't any fun to try for perfection. It made the game more work than play.
That's why I never dared try to beat SMB3 on one life. The game was just too much fun, and I didn't wanna ruin that.

I played straight through to level 6-4 just the other day... and it was game over at that point. I was being sloppy, as I thought I had another couple lives left. I honestly don't remember ever (as a kid) playing through that many levels without warping.. and I don't know if I've ever been to level 7 in SMB..
Scissors
07-21-2009, 03:26 PM
Despite it being the first game I ever played, I beat it for the first time a year or two ago (I was trying to beat several games I never beat as a kid). It took me around 5 to 10 tries, which was a lot less then I thought it would. I remember it being much harder. Almost every attempt I breezed through the first 7 worlds.
I did beat the All Stars version back when it came out, but only because I was able to save my progress.
Hell, I don't know if I can do the unlimited 1-ups trick on SMB1. I've never found the right timing to first stomp on the Koopa to set it up.
I've never been able to that either. I don't think it would matter much for me though. If I wasn't Super Mario or Fire Mario at the beginning of the final stage, I couldn't make it to Bowser.

Never did it, I always used the warps. I'll see if I give it a shot this week, though. The thing is that play Mario games running all the time (never depressing the RUN button) and that makes my playing too sloppy sometimes.
Yeah, I've done it more times than I can count (definitely more times with the warp zone though)...even in the arcade "Vs." SMB (but not too many times). Vs. I remember playing the VS SMB at an arcade at an amusement park. It was the only time I was able to play the game, and it was after I was at least 18 or 19. I remember at one point my hand started cramping for some reason, and then the worlds started getting "weird" compared to the NES version, and between the two I croaked. After doing this for a few tries, I decided that my performance had gone down the tubes for the time being and called it a day.

Now the lost levels I've only beat once. That fuckers hard. In then end it starts over even harder. There's one level, I think 6-3 or something where you have to bounce the whole way dodging those cloud guys throwing those spiky guy that has got to be hands down the hardest Mario level ever!

This game is one of theasiest for me. I breeze through all 32 minuts in around 20 minutes. My cousin said my top record was 17 minutes when I wasn't paying attention to it one time. I have probably played through Mario 1 for NES and Sonic 1 for Genesis more than any other video game.
Super Mario Bros 2. (J) aka The Lost Levels is more fun for me because I actually have to be more careful in it. I can beat that one pretty quick too. World 8-3 on that one trips me up sometimes but I get used to the Hammer Bros. patterns after a while and make it through. If you beat this game without warping you get to go to the extra World 9 which is very strange.

I'm sure I've done it, but I don't remember when exactly. I'd bet most people have pretty fuzzy memories of Worlds 5, 6 and 7, thanks to the warp zones...

I've done it a bunch of times without warps. Not too bad in one sitting, I wanna say around 1-1.5 hours or so. Definitely not an all-day affair like Blaster Master.
SMB2 (Doki Doki Panic) I found quite a bit harder to beat w/no warps. Longer too. Same for SMB2j, expecially with the extra stages.

I've beaten it countless times. One day I sat and beat it several times in a row, just to see if a third quest would eventually open up. I remember how white my knuckles were the first time I got to the end, before I even had an NES, playing world 8-4 on my friend's black and white television.
But I almost always used at least one warp. I did beat it a few times playing every level, but I think I had to use the extra lives trick on the staircase to do it. It would be interesting to try to beat it with just the lives you're given and can collect normally without using warps.
All of this talk of Super Mario made me play a quick round today. I made it to the end, though lost maybe three or so lives throughout the whole thing. I did not have to continue at all though.
I am pretty surprised at how difficult some folks feel this game to be. However, I am terrible at the lost levels. I have it on a famicom pirate cart, and it feels like SMB, so I go fast and so forth, but that causes me to whip into some enemy and my experience never ends well.

Best I've done on SMB is a perfect run on all levels, gotten nearly the maximum amount of coins, but died on 8-2 I think. No Koopa trick, had about 17 lives.

I was thinking there was a "Who's never beaten Super Mario Brothers" thread but I can't find it. I think this must be the one I'm thinking of though because it comes pretty close...
What's the game you are most ashamed to say you've never beaten? (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110672)
Has anyone from that thread given it another go yet?

Nope, just on the GBC and SNES versions. The original NES game stays silent, and the only way to tell if you're going the wrong way is if the section repeats itself.

With warps, I can probably beat it in 15-20 minutes. Without, I can usually beat it in an hour. Call it cheating if you must, but I use the continue code(Hold A at the game over screen. While keeping that button held, press Start when the title screen appears) this way I begin at the beginning at the world I died in. It's just like playing Lost Levels like this.

I think I did it in 8 minutes once after not playing it in years. I tried to show my wife a fews weeks ago, but right before the end, in the underwater part, the spinning fireballs got me and took away my fire flower. I died trying to run under Bowser. After that I felt pretty defeated so Mario died some cheap deaths ending the game and we were both pretty dissapointed.:(

Isn't there actually a level 0-1 that often shows up in different hacks when the emulator doesn't start them correctly? It must be in the original code because level 0-1 in all those hacks have the exact same layout.

I DO know that the Famicom Disk System and Cart versions have different ways and layout of the "Minus World". I unlocked those in the FDS version, so I guess you can say I beat 35 levels.

Hm, the 0-1 that got into those sprite hacks could posibly be the FDS minus World layout.
There are certain hacks that only work properly in the emulator NESticle. You get that 0-1 stage when you fire certain ones up in FCEUltra or RockNES.

I did it again today and got to 7-1 in Mario and 5-1 in Mario 2 its on the all stars so they save.

Sorry I thought this was common knowledge. The retail version of SMB has a glitch that allows you to access world -1 which is an endless water world. It's impossible to beat because you run out of time.

World 0-1 is not the same as world -1. They are both underwater but world 0-1 has a different level layout. World 0-1 doesn't repeat. Instead, it goes to the title screen. If you look at 0-1 carefully, it has the same level layout as world 4-4 but it is underwater. When you touch the axe, it even says "Thank You Mario, But Our Princess Is In Another Castle" but Toad isn't even there. World 0-1 is reached by a glitch in the game code not starting at the right level in certain emulators. Since this happens with some people's mere sprite hacks and not layout hacks, this level's code must be somewhere in the original game. You can probably reach it with a Game Genie code like the missing levels of Super Mario Bros. 3.
I played the arcade VS version of SMB for almost a year before my parents finally bought me a NES. The NES version is quite a bit easier, so it was a breeze. Although, I never did beat the arcade game. I was only able to get to 6-1 or so.

I once beat the game without warps without getting hit!
I had a short run trying to speed run the game some years back. With warps the fastest I ever did was 5 minutes and 28 seconds, if I recall correctly. The fastest done by anyone now I think is 5 minutes exact, which is just totally insane and on a level way beyond what I was doing.@_@

When I was trying to speed run it, I remember getting very impatient during the in between segments while Mario was taking his dear sweet time strolling over to the pipe. Holding B and right didn't help but it also stop me from doing it LOL
Edit-
Though, I'd also waste a few seconds doing the dance at the top of vines...because...it just had to be done.

^^ That unlimited life thing is quite tricky; I've only been able to pull that off a couple times in my 32 years.
Went through the entire game (all stages) only once. What a chore! Of course, I've completed it numerous times w/ warps, but only once did I labor through the whole darn thing.
