Do you just look up rarity as you go along entering games at RFG, or is there a rarity entry in their database I don't know about?!
No, there's no rarity section at RFG, but long before I found RFG, I kept an Excel spreadsheet of my collection and included a rarity column. Now, I keep both updated as I find new stuff. It's more time consuming, but I figure I want a backup in case anything happens to one or the other.

Anyone know anything about this? I picked it up because it looked interesting, but really it doesn't fit in my collection anywhere, so I don't know what to do with it.
Looks like a compilation pack of a bunch of games for pre-iMac Macintoshes. I have an AppleCD drive and a 1993 Quadra 605, but nothing to hook them up with.

I've personally been thinking about finding a copy of JMP for Mac. It supposedly runs better than the PC version, and the music is CD audio. Sadly, I'm limited to Mac emulation, which I don't believe works well with CD audio. I really want an old Mac...

I am in Texas visiting some relatives. Checked out some Goodwills, Salvation Armys (ies?), resale stores, consignment, and found nothing. Not even CDs. Did find a couple of jerseys though. I decided to visit some pawn shops, as there is maybe one anywhere near me in VA. Unfortunately all the pawn shops seem to be chain stores, so the prices are pretty much the same from store to store, it is the selection that changes. At the first pawn I got:
First Blood (new sealed, Blu-Ray) - $10
At the second I got:
Call of Duty: World At War (complete, 360) - $10
Finally at the third I got:
Army of Two (complete, 360) - $10
Bioshock (complete w/ slip, 360) - $10
Not a bad day altogether. Figured I would finally play Bioshock and sell it whenever I get the limited edition.

Oh yeah. I know that collection. I've seen it at least three times during my flea market hunts, and only bought it once; it took me a long while to actually sell it because nobody wanted it. The Mac versions of all three games aren't very sought after, and this seems to have been a very common set. There's at least one other set of those. There's two versions on Amazon for sale, and they have different cover art.

What part of the state are you in? Maybe if you're in an area I'm acquainted with I can send you in the right direction before you head back.
Today I went to a Movie Trading Company location and bought Racquetball, Smurf: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle, Gopher, Spider-Man, and Fire Fly for the Atari 2600, loose, for $1.99 each. And when I got home I realized that I already have all of them except Racquetball. I really hope the Video Game Trader app for the iPhone/iPod Touch gets collection check-boxes for the next update, it'll keep me from forgetting what I already have and rebuying them.
In another thrift I picked up R-Types for the PS1 for $12.99 (I probably overpaid for it but I really had the urge to play R-Type again). Later I bought a complete copy of Shenmue for the Dreamcast for $4.99, and at the next thrift I bought the soundtrack to the movie Bladerunner, just for the heck of it.

Near Houston, more specifically Spring.

08-25-2009, 10:16 PM
Ah, Spring. I think you're kinda screwed. As has been documented on this site before, there's not a whole lot of places locally where you can find classic games. There are a couple Play N' Trade stores around Houston, one in Spring and the next closest to your area would be a little farther north of you outside of Conroe. I've been hoping to hit that location the next time I pass through town, just to see what kind of retro stuff they've got.
Too bad you didn't show up around the time of the Houston Area Arcade show. I went a couple of years back. Other than the absolutely deafening crappy music making my ears bleed and totally drowning out the sounds of the games, it was a good time. And if I decide to go this year, I've got to stop off at Veron's Meat Market (http://www.veronsmeatmarket.com/) over in Humble. I've heard good things about them, but I'm usually passing through Houston to go to south Louisiana anyway, so I never needed to stop before.

The spring Play n trade location near Splash town closed down last month and I've yet to see the Conroe store.
Your best bet around here is pawn shops. They tend to be hit or miss but Conroe has a couple that have some stuff. The varity is iffy but I'd avoid the mass chain shops as they tend to only carry the new stuff and their prices are crap. The tend to make the major game chains look great but sometimes you can find stuff for unreasonably cheap prices.

08-25-2009, 10:44 PM
Whoops, sorry about that. According to Play N' Trade's storefinder, the only one left in Houston is over near Sugar Land on the opposite side of the city from Spring. That sucks. Which just leaves the one in Montgomery (just south of Lake Conroe).
If you've got a car, a GPS, and most of a day to kill, you might drive up to Bryan and College Station. I've heard that there's some decent retro game stores there. FX Game Exchange for one. The guys at the FX Game Exchange in Waco told me that the location there has a lot of classic stuff.

I grabbed:
Metro Gnome Music:
KOTOR II - $15
Futurama XBOX - $10
Tomba 2 missing manual - $20
Bookman's:
CIB Mint Pokemon Blue - $13.50
Gameshark GB 3.0 - $9
everything is for ebay except for the Pokemon Blue box, I need that for my collection. I can sell the cart itself for $17 shipped so why not? KOTORII really went down in value. a couple months ago that's $15 profit but now $3.50 profit, but whatever.
I'm heading to orlando for a bar mitzvah tomorrow to sunday, and will probably have time to go looking for games. never been in the state of florida before and know nothing about it, so can someone tell me good places to go?

I believe I went to that FX Game Exchange on a school trip 2 or 3 years ago. We used to go to College Station when we went to the next level of UIL. It was held at a college in a nearby town. (I'm not talking about A&M btw) and the teachers would always let us stop and hang out at a mall the day before the event.
I remember I bought some Atari 2600 games I wanted there, including Journey Escape. I think all of the titles were Data Age releases. I can't remember that much more though cause it's been a while since I went there.

The guy from the Waco FX Game Exchange told me that he goes to all the locations, including the Bryan/College Station store and the one in McKinney, north of Dallas. That McKinney location is really small in comparison to the Waco location, and they have a Subway next door so the store always reeks of crappy sandwiches LOL . The manager guy at the Waco store suggested that I go to their website and email the manager of the location I'm planning on going to and ask them to bring in the stuff I'm looking for, since their locations tend to be tiny and they have to keep stuff in storage. I've been meaning to do that to the McKinney store.

Speaking of FX Game Exchange, when the McKinney store opened I used to visit it often and grabbed a few 2600 games, a Dreamcast game or two, but soon after I found out that they had a policy that drove me crazy (and still does). They have their Genesis game boxes on the shelf in shrinkwrap with the prices on them, but when you get the game, you DON'T get the boxes or manuals, just the cart! The boxes are for display only! I asked the manager and he said most people only want the game anyway, besides the boxes are worth more as display art so they won't sell them. Later, I found out they were doing the same with 32X games! The prices are higher there, but if you're getting a complete copy with box and manual, it might be worth it, but since you're not, they're just plain high. Is this the same at all FX's or just a managerial decision in McKinney.

I offered the manager $20 for it one time and he just laughed and shook his head.

They had 2600 games? I've been there two or three times, and the only pre-NES games they've had was a single Intellivision game. They did however have some Atari controllers in the discount bin near the entrance.

I would say that this was a couple of years ago or at least a good 18 months. They had some 2600 carts, loose of course, and I think they were maybe $1-$3 each and I got a couple of fairly rare carts that day. They had 20 or so carts, mostly commons, and those same carts were there for a month of so until they all just disappeared. My guess is they are in the back room somewhere so they could make room for the mountain of NES games they have in the case now.

I got 2 of those Gameboy Advance collection thingies with 3 Atari games on them. They were $4.99 (half off at Best Buy). Best Buy also had a crapton of copies of Rock Revolution on DS, Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 for $4.99 each (wtf). I got the DS version that was half off so it ended up being $2.49. Rock Revolution must be a pretty bad game to merit such a cheap price.

Gamestop lowered the price of all versions of Rock Revolution to that some weeks ago. Even online. For NEW COPIES.
It wasn't exactly bad, it just... wasn't very good. Be thankful we didn't get the Wii version, as it seems that one really IS awful.

A pretty expensive couple of days.
This whole lot was $40 on Craigslist. Only the games and accessories were advertised, but the guy tossed in the system (although he said the system wasn't working, if so, the box and everything are mint), the controller, the movies and the anime figures.
What am I gonna do with anime figures? Anyway, neat lot as I don't see too much in the way of japanese items. Well, typically considering this weekend then this lot:

$50 for the following N64 games + system with expansion, hookups and 3 controllers. Another from Craigslist. A bit more than I'd like to pay, but I can make it back from the system and some of the games I already have.
http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k413/Kuros2/finds082609003.jpg
$100 for a 360, HD and power brick. I already had the faceplate and I put it on because this system is modded. It's so I can tell the difference between my vanilla 360 and this one.

3 packages arrived in the mail today, so very happy!
Sega Saturn:
Virtua Fighter 2
Sega Ages Vol 1
Daytona USE CCE
Sega Worldwide Soccer 97
Sega Rally Championship
Gameboy Colour:
Azure Dreams CIB
Other:
Super Mario Galaxy Soundtrack
The saturn titles were a lot on ebay I won for £6, nothing startling but with free shipping it was a small bargain. All contribute rather nicely to the aim of a full pal saturn collection.
Finally got my hands on Azure Dreams for the game, had the PSX version for years but have always wanted both. It's not rare but finding it CIB at a decent price has been a challenge. Paid £10 for it, with free shipping again. SMG OST was free from club nintendo, finally spent those points on something!

Today at Goodwill, I found a bundle of NES games for 5.99.
The games were Punchout (The reason I bought it), SMB/DH, SMB/DH/WCTM, and Bases Loaded II.
I also got a vinyl record, Silver World by Hozan Yamamoto (yes, I got a Japanese record!). Not a fan of music like his, but it isn't bad. I bought it on a whim, to be honest, since it was .99. I am attracted to Japanese things, and I could read most of the album cover.

Original Xbox lot including:
Xbox console, power cord and A/V cable
3 Xbox S-controllers
1 third party controller
1 controller extension cord
1 Madcatz lightgun
1 Silent Scope lightgun rifle
1 DVD playback remote and receiver
11 games:
Silent Scope Complete
House of the Dead III
mercenaries
Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance
Arctic Thunder
MotoGP 2
Crimson Skies
Enter the Matrix
Area 51 (missing manual)
Halo 2 (missing manual)
Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball (missing manual)
He listed this all for $85, but I was really only interested in acquiring the Silent Scope rifle, as I have a soft spot for cool accessories. I asked if he would break up the lot and I'd give him $25 for the rifle to which he answered no, but I could have everything for $50.
I haven't decided what to do with this lot yet, as I already have all of the games except for Area 51 and I don't really need another Xbox. I may just turn around and sell the lot off, or keep it as a spare in case my old one eventually dies.

It's actually a pretty fun arcade-style game. I don't know much of the history of the "Thunder" franchise, but it's similar to one of my all time favorites, "Hydro Thunder". Fast paced timed/lap racing and considering I see this one pretty often at Gamestop for under $5, I recommend it!

At my favorite thrift store, I came across an Atari 2600 6-port cart selector. I have already found two of these in the past couple of years, and now I have a third. $2.92, loose. Also bought a bowling pin for $3.93, since I never come across pins in thrift stores.
At the next thrift I looked at their CD racks which are always interesting, and find a proverbial buttload of new stuff. I then notice that there's a whole lot of Japanese imports, none shrinkwrapped but all looking new. I bought:
Far East Groove by Musashi
(The Rest Of) New Order
Gorillaz - G Sides
Queensryche - Operation:LIVEcrime
Night Ranger - The Masterpiece Collection
And the other two were US releases, Solvent - Apples and Synthesizers and Tribute To Van Halen/2000. All were either $1.99 or $2.99.
At the other thrift I ended up buying Tetris and Treasures of the Smithsonian for the CD-i, and a handheld by Radica: called Stealth Assault that you hold up to your eyes like the old Tomy 3D handhelds from the '80s. $2.99 each.

My brother was always talking about making a little bowling alley in his back yard, so I always kept my eye out for pins. Last week, I came across one from a Main Event bowling alley that was obviously for some kid's birthday. It was a real pin, but it had a giant Main Event logo on it and had over a dozen signatures from some kid's friends scribbled across it in different colored marker. I decided not to pick it up since I didn't know how to get the marker off, then I started to regret not getting it. It's a good little drive to get back to that thrift, so I'm glad I picked up another one. Although mine looks to have been heavily used, and the Main Event one was new, just with kid scribbling all over it.

If you ever want to get anymore, try asking your local bowling alley if they have any old pins that they are going to throw away. Most are still in decent condition, just have been in circulation too long.

I don't usually like to post new purchases in the "finds" but these are pretty good deals:
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/35/img6024d.jpg (http://img5.imageshack.us/i/img6024d.jpg/)
Last Remnant (360) $7.49
Eat Lead (PS3) $7.49
Wipeout Pulse (PSP) $7.49
N+ (PSP) $4.20
All were in a 75% off bin at one of my Best Buys. It's amazing how different prices are between BB stores. My other close-by BB has all these games still at regular price. Oh well, my good fortune...
There were tons of others that I passed on but might go back to get tomorrow, including:
Hellboy (PS3, 360, or PSP) $7.49 each
Mercenaries 2 (PS3 or 360) $4.99
EndWar (PSP) $7.49
American Idol Encore (PS3) with mic $4.99
Tenchu (Wii) $4.99
Alone in the Dark (360) $4.99
Ski-Doo (PS3) $4.99
Fuel (PS3) $12.49
and lots lots more. I almost got Endwar but I'm hearing it's not very good. Same with Alone in the Dark.

75% off is good, we do 50% off at my store, but i think im gonna have them change that. also it goes by a thing called EOL (end of life) and it varies by store. did they have any other copies of eat lead or last rem?

I got the last of each of those titles, but would be willing to trade the Last Remnant if you had something I needed. I was hoping to find the PS3 Lego Batman for that price, but it's still $19.99 at my stores.

Eh, today at sales:
I got a big plastic tub of misc 80s gaming stuff for $15 at a sale.
I'll post a pic if you guys really want to see it but it was 6ish NES games including Metal Gear & Castlevania II in a black fake leather stuff case and the rest of the tub was C64 stuff. There was a modem, printer, floppy drive, cassette drive, and what must be 50 discs. Most of the discs have no writing or identification on their labels, but I noticed that The Movie Monster Game, Mail Order Monster, some adventure building kit thingy, Synth Sound 64, and several other games were mixed in.
The C64 is really filthy. Eh, this is the bad part. The computer itself was in the original box but it was so dog chewed up that I trashed it (the box, that is). The rest of the stuff is just dusty/dirty and smells funny, both of which I didn't notice when I bought it.
I'm a big fan of chiptunes and I got it just for the purpose of using it's musical capabilities. Saying that all of this C64 stuff need TLC is an understatement. Well, anything to keep it from the trash.
How I got it all: I asked the lady running the sale if she had any old video games "like Atari or something". She said she had an Atari and to come back later. Well, I came back later and Suprise! It's a nasty old C64! Yay!

Fat (Broken) PS2 With 1st Party Memory Card & A Wired Guitar Hero Guitar - $5
Told me this was broken, was asking $15 but took my offer of $5.
Black GameCube with Hook Ups, GameBoy Player, 1st Party Controller & Madden 2006 In The System - $5
Went to this sale late (about 12:30) after I was done yardsaling since I was passing by, I would have went earlier but it wasen't on my list since they just started advertising on Friday. I do my route list up the day before so I would have everything from the Thursday paper on my route. $5 was the IAP.
but I noticed that The Movie Monster Game, Mail Order Monster, some adventure building kit thingy, Synth Sound 64, and several other games were mixed in.
Cool find on the C64 stuff even if it's seen better days, I remember playing Mail Order Monster a long long time ago. If you have more retail C64 games in the lot you haven't sorted out yet you'll have to take a picture of them or at least post again and list them :)
I used to have a C64 and a ton of games (I'd guess 50-100) and unfornately I'm pretty sure it all got thrown out shortly after I got an NES/SMS and didn't use it much. I had deja vu when I read Mail Order Monster and have fond memories of many games I can't remember the names of since I was so young, I do remember Below The Root & Alice In Wonderland (both being 2 of my favorites) and Forbidden Forrest.
I just got another C64 a few years back for $5 from my one friend. It belonged to his mom's boyfriend and he passed away so I always joke that someboday had to die in order for me to find another C64.

hellfire - You probably pay more than what the macbook is worth to go to that school...
lostdwarf - Nice! I'm surprised Gamestop still had GBC games. The ones around here got cleaned out a long time ago. It'll be great when XBOX goes 75% off, then GBA will probably be after that.

I personally need Mega Man IV and Xtreme, shoot me a PM if you'd be willing to sell them. My GameStops ran out of GB stuff a while ago, and they never had anything good anyway.

One of the last sales I stopped at today which was unadvertised, asked about games and they had an Xbox on the porch that they didn't put back out after carrying it back out of the way of the rain on Friday. I left as I wasen't particularly interested but I decided to go back and ask how much since I have been meaning to get a backup if it was cheap enough incase my only Xbox were to break. They said they were asking $5 which I wasen't going to argue!

I'm pretty sure all GameStops have 75% off pre-GBA games. It may still have a rather high price for games listed (I think pokemon is like 10 to 12) but they should ring up at the discount price.
