View Full Version : Strider II - Genesis or Mega Drive?

This one may seem like a stupid question, and comes not long after my post about bootleg GBA carts. I was looking through some online auctions for Genesis games, and I noticed something that I never realized before. I've always been aware of the game Strider for the Genesis, and I knew it also had a sequel on the system, as well as ports on the PlayStation. However, it just dawned on me that every copy of the sequel I've ever seen differs from mine in a very important way. They have a different title!

My game is titled simply "Strider II", while all of the other carts I see say Strider Returns. Another weird things is that the cart clearly says Sega Mega Drive on it. Here's where the stupid question part comes in. Is this a Genesis or a Mega Drive game?! It's driving me crazy. The cartridge lists CAPCOM USA on the front, and lists US copyrights, and the game shares the European title of Strider II, rather than Strider Returns that they used here in the states.

But I purchased this game in the states, and at the DP store no less. And it works on my Genesis! I don't know why I never realize these odd things for so long and someone always points out my stupidity later.

Anyway, is this a mislabeled Genesis game, a Mega Drive game that's compatible with American Genesis systems, or something altogether different? (God please not another bootleg!) Any help would be appreciated.

Mega Drive game. Looks the same as my copy.

It's a Mega Drive game. All but the later games for the system were region-free. Being European, you may notice a difference in speed, because you're playing a PAL game on an NTSC console/tv. But maybe not, sometimes they were lazy and didn't make the proper changes.

Megadrive - European name for the Genesis

Genesis - American name for the Mega Drive.

So when it says Megadrive, it's definitely from Europe. Now remember that the carts are shaped the same and only the late Mega Drive games are region locked, from 1993 up. So if the game is made before 1993 or so, the game will work on a NTSC Genesis system.

Mega Drive is also the Jap name as well Baloo, anyway playing this Pal game on an ntsc system is the same as playing the ntsc version, no pal slowdown or anything like that.

Thanks everyone, I never knew that there was no lockout between Genesis and Euro MDs. Figured there was since the NTSC J ones were different shapes. And this game was 1993 so I guess it was towards the end of that region free period. Again, I should noticed way earlier considering it says "Mega Drive" right on the cart, just one of those stupid moments where something never clicked.

Mega Drive is also the Jap name as well Baloo...
I think he was specifically making a distinction between "Mega Drive" and "Megadrive".

Just to stop the next round of "whuut izz des," you can look in my recent Mega Drive Samsung, rarez & pie rats thread to see what a JPN Mega Drive (that's two words for both Europe and JPN) game looks like. Basically, like something out of Frankenstein's lab.
