This game looks so awsome!!! Seems so fresh and beautiful. the trailer just pulls you in with the it's dark, epic musical score. i hope that is music from the game. the presention comes together for a very gothic epic style. this game is coming out in october but the japanese/asian version has english voice over and and also english subtitles. I think this game will be the sleeper hit of the year, especially with everyone's attention on modern warfare 2, assasins creed 2, dantes, inferno, dragon age and even nba2k10. demons souls will slip in through the back door on oct ,6. It's getting special edition treatment as well. sweet.
I watched some early reviews and many fans are calling it a Kings Field spiritual sequel. people are describing it as a cross between Oblivion and diablo. they also say it's wicked hard and addictive. :) Anyone here pick it up yet?
I have a off-topic question about the kings Field series. How dose it compare to the elder scroll series. Is kings field series open world like elder scrolls? teh last elder scrolls game i played was Daggerfall and i loved it. lol it's been a while. damn... that was on my compaq pentium 133 in 1997

demons souls looks sexy as hell and the gameplay is great, but the game is *really* hard. hard to the point where i'd guess 70% of all players giving up after a few hours of gameplay.

Reminds me of old school King's Field mixed with Baldur's Gate and cranked up to 10!
PS3 killer app imo. Already preordered.
Btw, I always preferred King's Field to Elder Scrolls. The gameplay was much more addictive, fun and atmospheric. Elder Scrolls involved too much down time for my liking, King's Field was much more action oriented and linear, but the control you had over your character, environment and weapons was much more personal and involved. You felt like you controlled it all instead of just button mashing.

From what I read the preview, it is a spiritual sequel to King Field. I preorder it.

I can't imagine Demon's Souls being game of the year. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great, but it clearly is not something I would recommend to all of my friends and I would say that even many people who enjoy RPGs won't necessarily like this game. This is one game I would suggest renting or borrowing from a friend before spending the money to buy it.

Demon's Souls will never get game of the year. It WILL be a sleeper hit though. I've got the Asia edition in English...and it's DAMNED good. Easily one of the best games of this year IMO. However...it's INSANELY hard and completely unforgiving. And I mean COMPLETELY....to the point where even if you wanted to attempt to make it easy in any way, they've blocked it.
Even if you turn the power off to your PS3 the INSTANT you die....it still manages to save your failures :D And the weakest enemies can flat out obliterate you. Not to mention the bosses are so intimidating....I'm afraid to fight some of em....actually afraid to. I can get to em...but I don't want to! Yeesh.
That being said, it's online play is genius...minimal interaction, neat concepts, the game is BEAUTIFUL, the gameplay is challenging, and the game is FUN. It's also a complete time-suck...you can't just sit down and play for a few minutes.
Having the Asia edition...I still preordered the LE from Atlus....partly to have a US one, partly for the soundtrack and artbook (the music is beautiful btw) and mostly for the strategy guide in English...cause this one is tough as nails!
I may actually preorder a SECOND copy of the LE...and just leave it sealed.... :D

the game is indeed a BEAST, but it's From Software's absolute best work (and a bit of revenge on folks who want an easy ride in their game experiences). I played a bit of the Asian version to know it's amazing and yep, the difficulty is killer on purpose. The unforgiving nature works for me, because unlike other RPGs, this is one game world where you always feel like death is right around then next bend and that keeps things constantly tense.
I think the game will make more than a few top 10 or top 20 PS3 lists at year's end just because it does a few things as good as or better than other genre games while appealing toward "hardcore" players who seem to get bored at games that are too easy. And yup, the music is brilliant - the entire soundtrack in now on my hard drive as of yesterday.
My review copy is on the way and I expect to be buried in the game for quite a while.

Nice...everyone loves this game. it's not out yet in the states an it already has a cult following.
man i just can't get that music out of my head...love it love it!
I was looking at early previews of the game and it was being dubbed : "kings field 5"
I'm getting a ps3 soon and thought about importing this or siren(huge horror fan). I may import Siren and wait for the DS state side L.E edition release.

I imported both this and Siren.....and compared to Demon's Souls, I barely even TOUCHED Siren.
I'd have to say that Demon's Souls is already easily in my top 50 games of all time and slowly creeping up the charts. This one is gonna blow a LOT of people away long-term.

Awesome, I loved the King's Field games. Looks like PS3 will soon be getting some more RPGs and a nice variety of styles.
What I liked about King's Field was being able to openly explore the areas looking for treasure, fighting enemies to your heart's content but still having a main objective or goal(s) you needed to do in order to complete the game. What makes King's Field easier to follow than The Elder Scrolls is that there are more caves/tunnels/passageways than open fields. In King's field one area usually leads right into another while The Elder Scrolls games let you out of a town into a large field that gives you many different areas to choose to travel to.
On PS One I noticed a game called Shadow Tower that plays like King's Field as well but I never really got into it and it didn't look like it was better or anything from the start.
Demons Souls does differ from their gameplay though as this is 3rd person while King's Field is first person. It would be nice if they did make a true King's Field 5 at some point in the system's life.

Demon's Souls is from both Sony and From Software. There's references to King's Field but Sony didn't want them to make it like King's Field.
Also. Yeah. Shadow Tower wasn't too great. It felt too isolated in my opinion. I didn't play much of it before quitting(it was a friends.) Eternal Ring on the other hand was another good one, atleast better than Shadow Tower. I thought King's Field was the best one though(KF2 in Japan,) better than King's Field 2 which was also good. From what I've heard, the original Japanese King's Field sucked.
*edit*
Decided I'd pick up King's Field the Ancient City since it's one I haven't played.
Also. If you like Demon's Souls, I'd recommend picking up From Software's other third person games that are sortof similar. Evergrace and Forever Kingdom. You might want to look into them to see if you'd like them, but they're really good I think.

I was fortunate enough to get a press build of this game from Atlus, I have been playing it for a week now. It is by far one of the most polished Action RPGs I have seen on the console. The controls are very good.
It will be the sleeper hit. I am totally addicted to it.

With Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2 coming out this year, it's hard for me to believe that Batman would win the most Game of the Year awards from review sites. I definitely wouldn't complain though, it seems deserving enough.
Anyway, I'll probably be buying this game. I'm kind of tired of sword action (and action RPG) games this generation and want some turn-based games....have to take what I can get I guess.

I disagree. Terrible boss battles(save for 2 IMO), lame ending, no real replay value unless you want to get high scores in the challenge mode, poor hit detection(every time Batman does a "cool" slow finish he completely misses). Its a good game, but it has a lot of room for improvement(I think 2 could be much better). Its a great fan service(the character bios are awesome), but its only ranked so highly because people love Batman since Christopher Nolan took over the movies.

If you took the game without all the Batman references it would still be a good game. As Batman it's even better because it sticks to the source material so well and a character we love. The ending isn't really great, but it's similar to what would happen in the comics/animated series.
Also. There are two boss battles against the same boss that are good, but I'm not going to mention anything for those who haven't played the game. Then Poison Ivy is a decent boss battle. The rest of them aren't really that great as they're all the same pretty much.
It has its flaws, but there's no denying it's a great game, especially for an action/adventure game its length and the amount of content it has as a one player game.

AA is rated so highly in part because of the recent movies I'm sure but its also a very decent game and provides alot of fan service. Ghostbusters did much the same thing with regards to fan service but I doubt it will make GOTY even though I enjoyed it greatly. AA will definitely be in the top 10 best games of the year but I'm not sure if it will beat MW2 at least in some circles. There are really WAY too many people who hand out GOTY awards to be honest.
However I predict Eat Lead will be GOTY above all ;)

Back OT, Im not sure how this game will do. Fanboys are hyping the hell out of it, so that should help sales. Most people that have played it on the forums I am on have very mixed reactions to it, so I think the meta score will be between 60-80.

I'm surprised to see how many western game magazines are raving about this game. Everyone that imported this game seems to love it. when it launched in japan it sold really well. in fact it sold out at many retailers. it sold almost 40k in it's first week and sold many ps3's. that's pretty good for a western style rpg in japan.

I'm also curious, if I purchase the deluxe edition do you think I'll pretty much get my money back if selling the soundtrack, artbook, and guide later on? Or do you guys think that just like all of Atlus other recent special editions that they'll print this "deluxe edition" to be just as common as the standard edition?

thsi game could be the panzer dragoon saga of the ps3. especially if they don't print a ton of copies. if the game sells really bad in the west and become really rare it could even be in panzer dragoon saga/radiant silvergun category.
remember it's not the huge mainstream hits that get re-releases and re prints that end up being the collectors gold mine. it's the rare, hardcore game that no one bought. sort of like fine art.....dosen't become pricless untill it's hard to find and the original painter has passed.
if you get a L.E verion i'd keep it sealed and in a safe place. there just something about this game that has panzer dragoon saga collectability all over it.

Maybe, but like kupo said, it also has "Atlus" written on it. Which means it's an RPG that seems like it would end up hard to find but usually isn't.

Extremely unlikely. This game is being released in two versions and is being widely distributed. Nothing that Atlus has released in the past two years has been rare in any way. If you buy this game, it should be to play and enjoy it. Spending $70 in the speculative hope that this is going to become something in demand is a foolish waste of your money. If anything is going to become rare in this generation, it's going to be something with little hype, limited distribution and probably not in a genre like RPGs with a huge fan base nowadays.

There hasn't been a semi rare game from Atlus since SMT Nocturne. This game is no longer rare as they've reprinted it no less than three times.
Atlus has gotten pretty big since the 32/64bit days where the releases were actually rare due to limited printings. Now they're just like you're regular developer but they whore out games left and right, rarely being a good one anymore.

Hey guy and gals the game is almost upon us!
I highly recommend everyone who is getting this to watch this guys playthrough http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKuCP6h-nRM&feature=PlayList&p=19F58DE3ED94B40D&index=0 as it gives you the pace and idea of what the game is like as his playthrough only makes it so far and he quits in frustration.
Kinda hard to spoil the game by watching as it is so challenging anyway and I think this is less spoiling than reading guides and faqs.
Watching this has gotten me more ready and honestly even more excited as it's some of the best gameplay video out there and really shows what the game is about..... hardcore action RPG/Survival. It really warms my metacarpals to see a game that envelops the gamer so, should be a game that lasts.
Perfect Halloween game. :D

I just pre-ordered the LE version. I rarely buy new games (only other one I got this year was BlazBlue), but the buzz around Deomon's Souls was too much for me to ignore. Almost every review I read said it's a modern classic.

Got the Deluxe edition today and all is well, it's a nice embossed case though nothing overly fancy but makes it look better. The artbook and CD I really like how its packed and the strategy guide is the size of the blu-ray case though thick and full of info, already been using it.
The game itself has surprised me. Even though I was hyped up for it, it's a bit different than I expected. I imagined it was going to be a little slower, but in fact it gets downright fast as spit when it comes to combat. Considering the difficulty and the fact that you only keep items (which you can't sell) and only earn Demon's Souls (the currency) by defeating entire levels has made the game much more challenging than I imagined.
Earlier I died so many times and lost thousands of souls that I started running through levels just to find stones (which can be used after stage to earn souls) and items to upgrade as beating the level had gotten too frustrating, honestly I ran out of time cause I have to work tomorrow.
No doubt this game is very hardcore but it has a masterstroke to it I wasn't expecting, almost like a real RPG instead of just a hack n' slash. Not quite what I was expecting but i'm pleasently surprised and no doubt as has been stated, the game is very challenging.

It is mostly random. But when you place a blue soul sign down, people see your character name. If you know where the soul sign is placed and who placed it, you could get into the same game, it just takes some work.

I picked this game up pretty randomly yesterday and I find it to be very interesting. I love seeing other players souls run around with you at the same time and the ability to leave notes throughout the area. There was one misleading note involving a hole that I found hilarious, because I saw someone looking at them and then proceeded to jump down the hole, I busted out laughing when I read the notes after I witnessed what happened. It's also cool seeing the blood splatters and seeing how someone died, it's a very unique feature.
Funny thing is I didn't expect to like the game that much, but it's going to be one of those games I keep on going back to and eventually beating.

Plenty of people have been saying it's a sure runner for Game of the Year, it's sure to be a nominee for at least Multiplatform GOTY and I'm sure it'll end up losing to Modern Warfare 2.

The loss of XP/Souls (aka currency) versus items is the single most well thought out idea ever. Running for your life has never been so literal in a game. Know wonder this game is held in such high regard cause it houses the best character penalty/reward system of any game to date and the two world soul/body form concept mixed with online is just perfection.
Also the videos DO NOT do this game justice! You have to see the Dragon flaming the bridge (after 1-1 boss) and then the Temple Knight boss for yourself, wow, just wow. I've never experienced a game that lived up to so much hype yet actually exceeded my expectations. No matter how much good is said about this game it is not enough, it deserves every bit.

I picked up my copy today. my local gamestop only had one copy left. they didn't even have a copy on the shelf. I thought that was a bit strange. maybe they didn't order many copies thinking it's not a big seller. none of the sales reps seem to know anything about the game either. well i felt quite special to get my copy :)
after playing for about an hour i can confirm, yes it is hard. and yes it is fun. my class is the temple knight so swinging that huge axe in a tight corridor just dose not work! it really feels like a knight warrior simulator. the graphics look really good too. love the shiny chrome armor textures! This game is such a breath of fresh air.
I haven't made it to the first boss yet nor have i tried the various multi-player modes yet. it's gona be an all nighter! I'm going to crack open a cold beer, get cozy on my body pillow and see if i can't slay me a dragon tonight. I'm sure many dp members will be on too. This game is one of the reasons i bought a ps3 so i'm sort of throwing myself a personal launch party if you will. :D now I need some popcorn to go with my beer!

I thought that this was a PS3 exclusive
It is. But he was referring to my take on Batman, which is a bit off topic.

That is a great weapon, if you can get used to it. Hit Triangle and you will hold it with 2 hands, allowing you to use it in tight spots.

I was up until 4am playing this game! hey......i'm unemployed.
I still did not make it to the first boss. this game is HARD!!! I made it to the outdoor area where you see that sleeping dragon wagging his tail. and also the red eyed knight. How do you play muliplayer? I want to jump into someones game and hunt them down :) also i think i'm going to need help fighting a boss if i ever make it that far.

What class are you playing as? I started off as a Wanderer and had a hard time at a certain point, then I made a Soldier and I've been doing a lot better than I was before. Try other characters out to see what fit you and then go back to that other character later on when you're more experienced. I haven't tried the multiplayer mode yet, but from what I understand you can't simply just jump into anyone's game, you actually have to be summoned. So if you want to play with your buddies, you have to set up a meeting place and go on from there.
The first boss fight isn't that bad, I died once because of my own stupidity and then beat it easily the second time around.

This game seems like it would make me launch my controller into the next time zone. Is it cheap hard or punish you mercilessly when you fuck up hard?

The reading I've done says it is the latter of those two choices. I haven't gotten a chance to play yet, my copy is on the way, though.

This game is not going to be a sleeper hit. It's a major hit. It's on Amazon's top ten sellers. And that's the LE!

You know for all the old-school homages that this generation has seen Demon's Souls is the best next-gen "old school" game I've ever played. The game is fairly simple to pick up, but there's lots of depth, and a complete joy to play.
It's been a while since a next-gen game made me feel like a kid again. And just check out this thread - it's sounds like discussing strategies at recess.
I'm not finding it as difficult as I was expecting. I only died once in 1-1 but I kind of avoided Red Eyes after that. :) I'll go back and take him on tonight.
Speaking of, you know that first boss fight - before you enter the Nexus? Is it possible to win that, because I got killed in one hit.

HELP!!! I finally made it to the boss that flies over the bridge and toasts anything in sight. I have a crossbow but it's not doing any damage. what do I do??? I can't imagine facing this flying beast with a sword! the blue eyed knights are hard enough LOL. can other players jump in and help me? Do i just run for it?!? my class is temple knight.
BTW I I already had a few ( wanted to throw my controller across the room moments) I was screaming at the tv....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo!!! LOL man i haven't been this frustrated about a game(in a good way) since NES!
Woldrider, I totally agree. takes me back to childhood and i'm 31. :)

The Dragon before the first boss or the one after?
After the first boss stand in the next hallway a second or two and alot of blue phantoms will appear as alot of players do soul drops there or we can arrange a soul drop meeting and I can tell you exactly when and where I drop. I am in phantom form atm and would like my body back, so Ill help you beat a boss too. :D
Yes this is one of the best games in the past decade. My PSN is SolC, anyone and everyone who has this game add me, cause I loves it!

Haha I totally agree. I watched the little bloodstain just before I reached him and just saw a player swinging madly and then dying. So I'm thinking, "Pfftt... that bitch just got pwned." I pull out my sword, walk toward him and I'm down in two hits.
I was having no more of that action. :P

You cannot kill that dragon, not there, you can in 1-2. have him come down and toast the baddies on the bridge. Take off all your armor (yes, seriously) and time your run (Circle) and then weave between the last few enemies on the bridge. You can do it.
Also, what class are you? If you are having major difficulty I suggest trying the Royalty class as it starts with a nice magic spell. It is also the lowest Soul Level (1) so it is cheapest to upgrade.
You cannot level, or gain the ability to be summoned into other games, until you beat level 1-1 boss. You don't get the black eye stone (to do PvP) until later.
You should not try the Red Eye knight until about level 30.

I actually made it past the first dragon encounter and beat the first boss. I tuened off the game at the beginning of the bridge past the first boss room. so can I join or be joined by other players now that i've beat the first boss?
BHvrd i could use your help. my psn is narcronomus. add me. :)
I must have spent a good 2 hours just trying to get to the boss because of that damn Dragon and those Blue Knights, then I get crushed by the boss and spent even more time trying to beat him. I ended up buying arrows to use the bow because fighting him head on just wasn't working for me and I (probably) would've beaten him if I hadn't ran out of arrows.
I'm going to try again later and if I'm unable to beat him this time I just may go completely insane.
