What is with this Jeopardy obsession? Why don't you guys focus on the thousand other games that WORK?

What are the CRCs for your problem ROMs?
I tested out Family Feud and it would make it to the title screen but wouldn't accept input and there was no sound. Hitting reset fixed it.
I decided to try this with Jeopardy and it fixed the corrupt graphics issue I was having.
WWF Raw worked fine for me with no errors.
Sanrio World Smash Ball I could not get to work. The english translation one would crash with an error code. The original Japanese one would load to a black screen and hang, which seems to be the same issue you are having.

I got my SNES Powerpak today and can't get it to work at all. :( I e-mailed RetroUSB but I'm not expecting a response over the holiday weekend. The compact flash card I bought from them can't be recognized by my computer. I got another CF card, but can not get it to be recognized by the Powerpak no matter what I do. Including reformatting it on two different computers and getting the same errors. I fear I got a defective unit. Ah well, I was really hoping to play with it over the long weekend.

What do you get if you turn on the powerpak without the cf card inserted?
Also, make sure you are formatting it as FAT or FAT32. If you format it as NTFS it won't work.

If I turn it on with the CF card not inserted it says there isn't a card inserted. :) I'm pretty perplexed about this. I've tried reformatting the card multiple times on different computers with no luck either.

Try deleting all the partitions on the disk and doing a full format. CF cards are notorious for compatibility issues... I'm hoping my Sandisk 2GB will be happy. I ordered the 1GB with it too just to be safe ;)

I'm running into another issue that won't let me use the power pak anymore.
I was playing with in 10 minutes. Loaded up Front Mission Gun Hazard this evening and got to the first point I could save. I went ahead and held down the reset button for 5 seconds so I could write the data to the battery. After telling it yes, the cart restarted with the following error:
Error: CONFIG File Not Found
Upon resetting, I received the same message. I plugged in the CF card to my pc card reader and discovered that the only directory that was on the card was a GHZ directory, which I would assume was from Gun Hazard. I formatted the card and downloaded the powerpak directory again onto the card, but still receive the same message. The cart is recognizing when the card is not plugged in and when its plugged in, but even with the proper directory on there, it still gives the config error. I looked in the manual and didn't see anything about this error message.
I initially had many graphical glitches or sound problems when using an 8gb Transcend 133x card, which after several trial and error I concluded that it was either a broken rom or the card itself. I didn't seem to have as many errors with my 4gb Sandisk Ultra II, but then again that could be attributed to trying an actual rom image since sometimes I'm unsure of the one I picked where there is a character display limit.
One specific thing I have notice is that several games with trainers or games that are in beta or unfinished form won't work. The screen actually crashes due to some type of missing header information, and the card supposedly logs this error. Maybe this problem could be fixed with a rom editing tool.
Apparently there is a RAM self check procedure you can go into by pressing select at most any screen. I didn't see this documented, so if it is there please excuse my ignorance. Maybe that might give a clue to as if the cart itself is messed up.

You need to be extremely careful when saving battery data. You must choose the exact .srm file you want to save to (I put mine in a separate saves folder in the root of the card). If you aren't careful, you can easily overwrite the entire CF card with crap. Then the only solution is reformatting the card as no files are actually saved; you just mess up the FAT. I've had to restore mine a couple times already because of carelessness. Make sure you keep it backed up on your PC, and if you mistakenly say yes to saving when you don't want to, be sure you reset again and choose no.

Just got mine today. I ordered it on Monday and it came already. Very happy with it so far. I have tried a bunch of games and it is doing a great job running most of them. I believe most of the problems were people trying to use it on the SNES2 system. It doesnt work on the mini-snes.
Quick question: If I want to set up a save directory in a folder, do I just copy the 8KBsave.srm file a few times and rename it?
Something like:
FF3save.srm
SMWsave.srm
WHATEVERGAMEsave.srm
???
Thanks for the help!

Seems like a futile effort to try to get this on an SNES2 system. SNES systems are so inexpensive, and it's not worth the grief. I love my PowerPak SNES version and NES version. Hope to see more PowerPaks soon - perhaps for gameboy color/mono?

Yes, that is probably the best way to do it and is how I have mine set up.
Just make sure to load the game save on the game load screen and when you're done hold down the reset button for five seconds and choose yes when it ask if you want to save. Then select the same save file you loaded from and you should be good.

So I've found some games that I think have incompatibility issues.
Can anyone confirm that these won't work (they don't work on my Powerpak):
1.Jeoparady! (Doesn't work me either. But I have the cartridge.)
2.Family Feud (Made by the same makers of Jeoparady, so I'll have to get the cartridge.)
3.WWF Raw
4. Sanrio World Smash Ball
I've found some more that do not work, but I do not remember what they were.

I have two full-sized NTSC/60Hz SNES consoles. One has a CPU v.2/PPU1 v.1/PPU2 v.2 and the second has CPU v.2/PPU1 v.1/PPU2 v.3. The PPU v.3 console has a sticker just below the Power button. On the earlier, PPU v.2 console, I experienced the graphical glitches in Jeopardy and lack of sound and input in Family Feud. Hitting reset caused those problems to go away. In the Later, PPU v.3 console, Family Feud and WWF Raw would not load and Jeopardy would not get past the Gametek logo, when it even got that far at all.
I have had varying success with fixes and hacks. Terranigma (E) [f1] works fine. Super Noah's Ark 3D (U) [h1C] works when Super Noah's Ark 3D (U) [!]. If NSRT, ZSNES or SNES9x report the ROM as bad, good luck getting anything working.

after i got mine back from Bunnyboy the first time it works great now. I have about 250 games loaded and have played a bunch:
Terranigma hacked for US
Star Ocean decompressed
Secret of Mana 2
Live a Live translated
all the good US games except the known issue ones.
the problem i ran into is the save feature isn't working for Star Ocean, i hold reset for 5 seconds on that one and it just resets the game instead

Check out their site, it covers your questions and much more. Although it does appear there might be a few more games that are giving problems than on their list (Jeopardy for example).
I suspect many of the issues will be ironed out in the coming months, but the list on their site is definitive when it comes to the games that have no possibility of working on this device due to utilizing enhancement chips not included on this cartridge.

Interesting, I just checked my SNES and it is a 2/1/3, no sticker by the power switch though. I borrowed my brother's SNES which is a 1/1/1 and WWF Raw would not load but Family Feud and Jeopardy are fine with a reset. Looks like there is varied compatibility depending on your console revision.
My SNES jr is also a 2/1/3 and it doesn't work at all. I guess there's a reason the jr's are listed as incompatible on the RetroZOne site.

So it would seem that 2/1/2 is perhaps the most compatible with the PowerPak at the moment.
I am inclined to think that the SNES jr. supplies less power to the cartridge slot than the PowerPak needs, making it not work.

Maybe, though my 2/1/3 seems to be pretty compatible.
Does anyone know how many revs of each chip there were? From the discussions on this board It seems like: two CPU revs, one ppu1 rev and three ppu2 revs.
Maybe I should try scoping the cart slots on each of my SNES's and see how much power is getting there. Though it seems a bit odd that they would drop it.

Likely would need new chips. If software would be able to do the job, I doubt you'd need to get the DSP-1 chip extra.
So basically, you can play everything you'd want except Super Mario RPG, both Kirbys, Mega Man X2/X3 and all the Super FX games. A decent hit to the popular games for the system, but isn't a deal breaker.
deal breaker for me. also Mario World 2 doesnt work.

deal breaker for me. also Mario World 2 doesnt work.
Yoshi's Island is one of the SuperFX games.
The cost of all the hardware, since you'd have to cannibalize chips from games and it would make the device much more complicated and expensive to produce, just to get those last 20 US releases working on it, would cost far more than just going out and buying those last 20 cartridges. They're largely all common and pretty cheap.
Or to do something like a FPGA would take years of development and probably be even more costly in the small numbers this device will be produced in.
Plus, many of the enhancement chips were barely used in anything. What's the point with something like the DSP4 chip? Strip it from a Top Gear 3000 cartridge when just Top Gear 3000 uses it? That's idiotic. Or the CX4 chip? Strip it from one of the two cartridges that used it just to get this device playing both games? That's stupid.
The DSP1 chip made sense, was extremely common, easily available, and makes a lot of titles compatible. None of the others make sense. There's little point in including a SA-1 when there's just three games using it that people care about, or including two revisions of the SuperFX chip to get a handful of SuperFX games people care about anymore working on it (Primarily just Star Fox and Yoshi's Island, and the prototype of Star Fox 2).
It's called the law of diminishing returns. Doesn't make sense for RetroZone, and I think most of their customers and potential customers would agree that it wouldn't be worth the time and expense that would probably of torpedoed this device before it was ever released.

PowerPak + Yoshi's Island and StarFox (that I already own) = Better than traveling with or simply having to pour over a hundred carts, loose in drawer, or boxed on shelf... Oh! And english translations, rom hacks and homebrews... On original hardware! All things considered, it's nuts to not have one for those reasons alone... Well, if you play the SNES often enough.

Not only Terranigma (needs a territory fix), but virtually all the great Japanese RPGs with fan translations, like DQ5, DQ6, FFV, Phantasia, Bahamut, Star Ocean (search for SF96soe.rar and add a .gd3 extension to the compressed file, works except for maybe saving). Plus it makes around 700 US cartridges totally redundant.

Well, here's my latest bug report. I went to visit my brother, who lives about two hours away, today. I knew he had a SNES so I brought along my PowerPak. When I tried it on his SNES it gave me the exact same errors as on a SNES jr. His is a full size SNES, rev 2/1/3 with the molded eject button.
That was a bit disapointing since the powerpak is supposed to be compatible with all full size SNES consoles. I may email this issue in to Retrozone, though I suspect it won't be fixed until the SNES jr issue is fixed.

System Compatibility List:
Works on full size Super Nintendo and Super Famicom systems from NTSC and PAL regions with correct lockout.
Does not work on the Nintendo SNES mini, possibly fixable in the future
Works on the RetroDuo and FC Twin clones, no lockout needed.
Other clones untested, likely to work.

The only difference I can see is on the sticker below the power button. One is English only and says USA in the corner (functional). The other one is English/French bilingual and says CANADA in the corner (non-functional). Weird.

By the way, do your consoles have the word "eject" molded or printed on the eject switch?
The "DSP1 not installed" console is molded. The "DSP1 installed" one is printed.

Another difference I noticed in my two SNES'es: The power adapter receptacle on the console. My older one has a round hole that you stick the power socket in from the power adapter. The newer one with the sticker near the power switch (and non yellowing case) simply has two little prongs that you still insert the same power plug over. Definitely a revision of some sort. Maybe we can piece together how to tell what rev you have without opening the case or using the PowerPak (which is back in stock by the way).

Here's my comparison of the earlier full size and later full size models (without opening)...
Earlier - Printed Eject on button, cartridge locks in place when switching power on, base has 4 rubber "feet," console is noticeably heavier, FCC ID on base is silver sticker, probably yellowed by now! 2/1/2 or 1/1/1 revision.
Later - Molded eject button, cartridge doesn't lock in, bases has 2 rubber feet, lighter weight, FCC ID on base molded in, probably still grey. 2/1/3 revision.
I believe the older ones didn't have the sticker, while newer did, but I'm not certain on that.
Coldb33r, I think you could be mistaken, I don't think both of your systems are 2/1/3, I think one is 2/1/2. Can you load Lion King and press B-A-R-R-Y in one of the game menus? I know that works.
Purkeynator, I think you're "newer" one is actually missing the round plastic cylinder in the power port. My "newer" one had one but it actually broken off. I think the newer ones were flimsy like that. Basically, sometime shortly after SEGA shrunk the Genesis, Nintendo went and reduced the cost of the console by removing a lot of extraneous plastic and metal in the system. Inside, the sound chip, which had been on this large daughter board, became simply integrated into the main board. From everyone's testing, it sounds like the later version plus the mini are lacking something the older ones still had.

Greg, the only problem with your theory is there seem to be multiple revisions of the 2/1/3 console. My main console is a 2/1/3 but has four rubber feet, a silver FCC sticker and a printed eject switch. It also works fine with the PowerPak.

I still don't know why you guys aren't asking these questions on the NESdev forum. That way you can get some answers from the guy who made these.

I emailed retrozone directly with the issues I had, I posted them here more as an FYI for other people.

Not quite a theory then Mitch! I still believe there's something about the physical appearance of the console. So far, anyone who has a SNES with the characteristics I described as the earlier model works, or at least it seems that way.

retrozone answered me about my star ocean saving question. this is the answer:
The battery information is pulled from the internal game header of the ROM, so if the save question does not appear it is a problem with the ROM. The header info can be seen in the LOG.TXT file after the game loads.
so what do you think?
anyway i will test my rom as soon as i get my snes powerpak

My powerpak should be arriving soon and I chose to buy my CF card separately..
I was hoping those who have it working at the moment could post with their working/non-working model CF card so we could make a small list of compatibility?
I purchase everything almost solely online so not having to repeatedly return and diagnose if it's a CF card or the powerpak's fault would be great :drinking:

i read that on a forum: Many translated games that were expanded do not change the internal game information which the Game Doctor SF series can be affected by too. For example Final Fantasy IV was expanded from 8 Mbits to 12 Mbits but the internal info was not changed to reflect this and my GDSF made the game unable to read beyond the 8MB mark causing problems. Sounds like PowerPAK will have that issue too. The only people not effected are emulator and EPROM players.
Can i modify the final fantasy iv rom with ucon64 or other program to change the rom information to 12mbit ? anybody know ? its the first game i want to play with my snes powerpak. i always want to play the ffiv HARD type in english thanks for help

Same thing happened to me. The card that was included was a 2GB Dane-elec card. It works great :)
