I found this really interesting article on ExtremeTech about the horrid state that online gaming has dropped into in the 21st century...it took the words right out of my mouth. Check it out, its interesting. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2342389,00.asp

..... -_-. That is literally what i'm talking about. Its not that people do it and its "offensive", its just annoying and ruins a potentially good game.

MEAN PEOPLE SUCK ; (! (pretty much the jest of the article)

I don't understand how the person in the article can be confused by peoples behavior in a online game. I get a little irritated when someone gets on their soapbox and complains about the general public cause he talks about it as if its something he can stop. You cant stop the general public or society >_>. That would be like the Mr show coupon the movie sketch where the film studio sued society.

I don't think it's too bad, I've been playing online since the mid 90s and it all seems the same to me, other than the slightly more creative insults out there today.

Mute them, leave the game, or troll which is remarkably easy to do if you want some laughs, otherwise I guess you have to get used to it.

you want to play Quake Live or Left 4 Dead (http://www.extremetech.com/topic/0,2944,t=Left%204%20Dead&s=27636,00.asp) or anything on Xbox Live at 4AM, when you have to play with a batch of strangers, life can really start to suck. Prepare to be randomly, verbally abused for no real reason. Prepare to hear profanity spewed by awkward, adolescent voices. Even if you're not using VOIP, get ready to see hastily typed, or worse, macro recorded insults hurled at you as fast as immature fingers can produce them.

Bwahahaha! What a wimp.

I'd go over to Byronic's house at 2am and he would be on his 360, drunk off his ass, shooting his own team in the back while playing Wesley Willis threw the voice. Kids would get so upset. Watching his assholery was like watching an artist at the canvas. I'll miss you bro. \\^_^/

Yeah. I guess so. Its just really, really irritating. Its mostly the tweens that make it the way it is, especially on the really "big" games (Halo, Gears, CoD, etc). Too bad there wasn't a brain scanner that could weed them out and not let them join XD. lol

The guy who wrote that article is a bitch, the thing many people love the most about online gaming is being anonymous and being able to vent without ever knowing who the people are or having to see them. You can get laughs from people yelling at each and practice your insults. The only thing annoying about online gaming is kids that are so young it sounds like they are still breast feeding, and they just yell into the mic or sing rap songs.

the thing many people love the most about THE INTERNET is being anonymous and being able to vent AND STEAL THINGS without ever knowing who the people are or having to see them.
Just in case anybody thought this was a good thing.

Anyway, I didn't want to hear the author's sob story, but I'm pretty familiar with it. This year I stopped playing online FPSes almost entirely and I'm (surprisingly, it didn't hit me until now) much happier for it. Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is tough but it doesn't actually say "YOU SUCK" or worse.

The funny thing is half the time the ones who run their mouth like they're the shit are really sore losers. It wasn't always this way but these days it's more the case than not.

One of the most annoying things about Gears of War (using as an example) is that the matches are short and someone thinks they are bad ass just cause of one or two kills instead of laughing and saying "aw yeah man that was a good one" they instead say "you suck bitch YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" and you have to sit there and wait to get revenge just to kill them so they say "you got lucky" or "who cares" and quit, GETS FUCKING OLD QUICK.

Everyone can defend these pre-puberty teens all they want but truth is it never compares to getting a good squad of mates who truely all play good and dish the dirt accordingly. Unfortunately this attitude has spread like a disease the last few years and finding truely "good" gamers is become more rare as the "pop in and get a kill" mentality is taking over.

At least back in the day "Quake 3" players would talk shit till they got to know you and if you had skills would befriend you and be cool and you could have some good rail gun matches and set battles. Noone takes time to get into games anymore, there are too many options.

If I could say anything to the poster of this article it would be "find a game you like and stick with it" cause when you really get to know the good players is when you have a really good time.

But bitches will always be bitches and the first place it is cured is when you stop being a sore loser. Relax, you can't win EVERY round, it's just a game.

You cant change the actions of others, just yourself. I read half the thing and couldnt read any more. Sure, this isnt sporting behavior, it's not even decent conversation. What you going to do to change it though? Nothing. You cant change it. You can mute them, you can play friend only matches, but that's about it. If your friends aint on then learn to play solo games. There's a reason I'm not paying $50 to be on live. I'm not interested in playing some cry baby teen who cant handle loosing or things they have to insult me because they finished a lap .6 seconds faster. So help me though, if I ever do I'm going to start my own clan, guild, _____(fill in blank) and the official greeting will be faggot. Be it man or woman, we'll greet each other as brother or sister faggot. If you cant beat them, make light of them. Nothing pisses off a cry baby pussy like turning their insults on them.

The article writer seems to have pretty thin skin despite his mentioning the opposite somewhere in there. The only time I've ever lost my temper is with obnoxious players in Diablo 1/2 that acted like "actofgod" in the Diablo 1 thread.

Most of his post in that thread:

----

1. No item level requirements meant you could "twink" your level 1 character with all the best gear. You just needed the help of a high level character to supply you with them or abuse the item duplication glitch. In pvp, you could take on average-geared players of much higher levels and win due to the amount of raw stats on the items.

2. Duping involved dropping an item and walking away from it for a second. Much fun ensued if you could sneak up and steal their item they were trying to dupe. (It's in character for the rogues anyway) Unlike single player you shouldn't leave things on the ground.

3. If the item he was trying to dupe was a powerful one, keep it for your twink set or dupe it yourself in a private, password-protected room.

4. Otherwise, have some more fun. When the player got mad, reassure them you'd return it, but only if they helped you complete a quest. "Let's go into the dungeon" you'd ask, and they'd comply -- you posed little threat to them as a lower level character. A few levels down when they were engaged in fighting and cut off from escape, you could suddenly take them by surprise and slay them (see point 1).

4. When players die in pvp, they drop half their gold. Collect your reward and cackle maniacally.

5. Apologize profusely. Then be a helpful fellow and use a scroll of resurrection on him. There, he's all better. Except he's at 10hp now... hmm. *chop* Collect another half of his remaining gold (1/4th). Repeat until you're getting less gold from slaying him than the cost of buying a new resurrection scroll.

Tips for success: don't carry gold yourself; carry a few high level rings that you can sell for huge amounts of gold if needed. Dupe them if you need more gold. Carry plenty of full-health potions to be sure you win the fights, and a scroll of town portal in case you start losing.

6. Optionally: give him back his items and gold when you've had your fun, unless he deserved it. Good times for all.

----

Lame tactics like that can ruin a good game (and it did ruin Diablo 1 along with hackers/dupers) even when you have a lot of friends playing the game.

Find one of those good third party headsets (I use the Pelican Beach one), hook it up, turn the volume down on the mic portion of the headset. Ta-da! Don't have to listen to jack shit. Or if I feel like playing with my T.V's sound, plug in the mic portion of the headset (the Pelican Beach one allows your TV's sound to come through anyways), turn the mic volume down, mute MY mic and throw the thing onto the floor. Ta-da again!

It's an old XBLA lesson by now, but: play with your friends. Party function is bad ass because then the only convo you need to have is with people you know.

My roommate is pretty funny. After a game of Halo 3, the person sent him a message calling him the n word, so he voice chatted, got the kid's name, sent him a Facebook request and then sent him a Facebook message calling him a bitch. I don't think the kid was expecting that.

I don't really have a problem with people being dinks online. I usually prefer to play with serious, mature players, but when I find myself playing with a bunch of fools, I see it as an excuse to goof off and try to annoy them. Occasional shenanigans can keep a game from becoming boring.
The only time I really get bothered is when people drop or hack and just waste my time.

it can get old after a while. I mean like whats the point of having the option to report those a-holes on xbox live when they do absolutely nothing about it? The other night i had a screaming match with some 14 year old because i said i like halo and apparently that makes me gay and after about 5 minutes of trying to ignore it and being to busy being shot at to find there mute function the only thing i could do is start yelling back but i turned it on them. I just started telling them what kind of a sick perv i really am and what i like done to me sexually while screaming and turning blood red at the same time for about 10 minutes....that sadly worked. When they finaly stopped and i stopped one of them came back on and said "dude your a sick fag" So i started in a again.
needless to say they stopped. Was it mature? no probably not, could I have avoided it. Most likely, did it work? Hey i got them to stop didnt I?

What is most amusing is that both my brother and I have been called the N word over headset during Gears (usually by American kids too young to have their balls drop let alone be legally playing the game). We're about as pasty as you can get heh. Do I really sound like I'm from the ghetto or the boonies?! There's a reason why another of my friends' groups call me a posh bastard, cos I sound so eloquent compared to them :p

Thing is, as soon as we've started to sling stuff back at them they either shut up completely because their brains have overloaded from the shock of someone actually responding, or they get stuck in a loop of repeating the same words because they can't think of anything else original to say.

The thing is... casually blurting out "oh shit" doesn't make you seem incredibly stupid and unintelligent like casually calling someone or something a "faggot".
Phase it out of your vocabulary and you wouldn't have to worry about using it in a knee-jerk reaction. Also, you'd be a better person for it.

Anyway, I guess I haven't contributed to the main point of this topic; I don't enjoy playing games online where you can interact through voice with other players because I get really annoyed with being called a nigger or a faggot constantly. Shit talk is shit talk, but some shit is just annoying.

All I normally have to say is something along the lines of: "Wait, who won that match again?"

Truthfully. Random doesn't mean anything. On Unreal Tournament 3 I'm under rank 1000 when it comes to online. My bestfriend is under rank 100. Usually during duels we're about even with kills, but once he starts pulling ahead I start cussing him out. A possible 20+ minute duel usually turns into half that time being a 10 minute string of cusswords and talking crap.

Against people I don't know I actually don't talk as much crap. It's because I know him that I talk as much crap as I do.

Well, I think online gaming, in essence, is supposed to be almost an extension of the online chat / forum experience we have here.

We didn't join this forum because we are all friends, we joined because we wanted to share experiences with people that "get us". Sure you get the occasional troll, or total asshat, but they are usually dealt with quickly.

Same thing with online gaming, in theory. We should be able to go online, and play games and share experiences with people all over the world that share the same love we do.

Unfortunately, that experience has been largely co-opted by foul mouthed children that do anything and everything they can to destroy the experience. I could mute them, or only play with my friends, but that's not the experience I want... or am supposed to be able to enjoy. I should be able to go online, join any game, any time, and have a good experience. It just doesn't work that way. I get it, I accept it, I don't like it, but I live with it.

I don't do a lot of online gaming, but I do like the friends and high scores aspect of Xbox Live. I'm <online> but I'm not <online gaming>.

That has changed a lot with Borderlands which is essentially co-op only, which alleviates the competitive name calling aspect. Plus I don't even think I have automatic voice chat with the 3 other people in my game (max of 4 in any game). I have had really good experiences in general hosting Xbox live games with randoms jumping in. I'd rather be in a party with friends playing, but this game really does well with random online. In the future I will give way more attention to games with co-op over PvP.

Anyone here, please friends list me if you want to play Borderlands (esp. you Mayhemmers if you have it). The game is a good deal of fun. I'm 'ianoid'. Now off to find the Borderlands thread. Loving that game.

I think we call can agree the world is a much better place with online gaming than without online gaming, the details dont mean much in my opinion. When you think about it the technology is amazing that we can play matchmaking with people from all the world while talking to them through a headset that plugs into your controller. People need to appreciate online gaming in general more than they do.

I enjoy going back through and showing people where to find the BSAA emblems, treasures and how to get all 50 achievements. I do tend to curse a lot though. I really need to work on that when playing with strangers. I never bad mouth people in those type of games, unless I know them. Games are meant to be fun, not stressful.

Nope, I can't agree with that. Online gaming is very over-rated. I usually just get online for DLC. And even that is something the world would probably be better without, as alot of the time its just a way for publishers to nickel and dime gamers. And Trophies/Achievements that can only be obtained through playing online (when sometimes there is literally no one else online playing that game) are just plain wrong.

I didn't read the whole article and I didn't read this whole thread but I don't think he mentioned the fact that a lot of players don't even talk in games for whatever reasons they have. I don't worry about assholes on the internet anymore, If someone is trying to piss me off I might mess around with them for a bit before muting them but that's it. And I usually play games with friends, When I don't it's usually a game that has a low percentage of assholes like Team Fortress 2. (Xbox 360 version) I can't comment about the PC version of TF2, I haven't really played it.

I've actually had very few bad experiences in online gaming. Once there was the FFXI party from Hell (kicked me for casting black magic... when I was a black mage). We were deep in a dungeon and I had spent hours waiting for them to get there. Aside from that, the only thing that comes to mind is the kids playing Garry's Mod. Gmod was awesome back when it was in its early versions, but once it went to its current format (sold on Steam), I couldn't find a decent server. I used to be able to find some creative people to make funny stuff with, but now it's just kids yelling at me, and banning me simply for entering their server.

I've yet to play anything on Xbox Live, maybe I will this year. I've mostly stuck with PC online.

Oddly, our UPS driver at work came in yesterday lamenting this issue in Modern Warfare 2 on PS3, and of course this thread came to mind.

This is interesting. Everyone always complains that it's the young kids that yell and scream at you.

In my experience, the 12/13 year old crowd is the mature crowd and are actually fun to play with. It's the douchebags in the 25-30 year old range that have the online gaming rage. 99% of the time, the older they get, the more obnoxious they get. Must be from lack of sex or something...

Homophobe homophobe homophobe homophobe homophobe....

People like to blindly throw that word around so much.

It implies fear of homosexuality, not necessarily a negative stance towards it (although I suppose that would come along with it).

I think the word you all are actually looking for is "bigot."

Sheesh.

Nope. I said exactly what I meant to say.

I don't think many people who regularly play online haven't had atleast one bad experience. It doesn't even bother me anymore(although it's gotten alittle better during the jump from original xbox to 360, atleast in my experience).

You just have to realize that these people talk all this shit because they are in the safety of their own home/parents basement and are thus free to act as stupid as they like. They would never act this way if you were in arms length of them, such as at a gaming tournament. Unfortunately theres nothing you can ever really do besides mute them and for some people that actually helps.

Yeah that is pretty much just the reality of this new internet age. The same thing happens on message boards too. People know that they won't be accountable for their behavior and that therefore changes how they act and brings out more of their true colors than you would see in real life.

The best thing you can is either mute them like you suggested or just try to set a good example by behaving properly yourself.

x.x this is why I don't like Halo. This is also why my friends and I are having LAN parties more frequently (like tonight ^.^ CoD: MW2!!!). Some games are worse than others, I really like games that will match you with people of your own skill level though, once you get past the "im a noob" and start to actually do well in a game things are usually alittle more mature and entertaining.

Unless it's John Romero. I read through Masters of DOOM, if I'm remembering it correctly he wasn't exactly quite during DOOM deathmatches. Even when he played in public with random fans, he kept yelling things like "suck it down".

I guess he started the whole thing so you can blame him. I don't want to look it up again as I don't know where the book is at the moment.

You just reminded me of Ghandi from the MLG team Carbon during the Halo 2 tournament days. That kid would not shut the hell up. Even his teammates would tell him to shut up. But he(and Romero) are more the exception instead of the rule.

This is one thing that causes fighting in the world. Person says something, other person can't shrug it off and takes it way too seriously.
Give me a break. The internet is a place of basic anonymity. Anonymity breeds stupidity and bad behaviour. It has been this way for a long, long time. I think by now the people who STILL find offense in bad language and racism on the internet would have figured it all out. There is no reason to get butthurt over shit like this on the internet. People are dumb, immature beings. Get over it.

Yeah. I guess so. Its just really, really irritating. Its mostly the tweens that make it the way it is, especially on the really "big" games (Halo, Gears, CoD, etc). Too bad there wasn't a brain scanner that could weed them out and not let them join XD. lol

A brain scanner would indeed be helpful, but until such time as that device is created I guess those of us who are not morons have to just deal with those who are.

I know it can be frustrating but hang in there and don't let a few people ruin your gaming experience. :bigmac:

Same. Even when my team got its ass handed to it the other team just GG'ed.

Might just be an Xbox thing.

This is exactly why I don't do multiplayer online gaming. You either get your ass handed to you by these little 12 year old fucktards cuz they game 24/7 cuz they've got nothing better to do, or they just start acting and playing like the little assholes that they are and ruin the whole experience for everyone else.
