From the auction description:

Bought at Richmond Gordmans in Overland Park, Kansas over two decades ago.

I knew it! I always said it was a myth that it was only available in Woolworth. This confirms it, and also leads me to believe it is not as rare as it's said.

I bet sealed one will pull over 20k. I wonder what's the reserve though... Kinda dumb to set reserve on this one!

I agree as well. Would not doubt this popping the 20k barrier.

I bet the reserve is set extremely high to garner interest. Once the auction ends, it'll probably go up for Best Offer or Buy It Now for $5k more than the auction ends at.

Can anyone make out that pricetag? It doesn't appear to say Woolworth.

It's already been answered but here you go...

Does anyone know the type of store Gordman's was in the 80's? I know they weren't the same as they are today. Maybe they got them from Woolworth in some kind of closeout deal.

Perhaps...but the person seems shrewd enough. I know that is what I'd do.
You can basically put any price on a sealed Stadium Events and someone will buy it at some point.

Does anyone remember how much Cheetamen 2 originally sold for? It was 1997-98 or thereabouts wasn't it? I remember it going to for $60-70 when I started.

Auction up to 40K now... wowzers.

110 bids, LOL.

Wonder how many bids are seriously "fake, price bumping" bids from people who have little to no intention whatsoever of buying the game, but just out of perverse pleasure to up the game's going rate. You know it's coming down to the final 5 seconds... why anyone would bid (especially on a high-demand, rare item such as this) with several days to go... makes you question how smart they are, unless of course, they are bidding for kicks knowing someone will outbid them eventually.

Not really a great strategy though, especially when the buyer has no idea how many more of these are going to pop up and it doesn't look like most of the bidders followed the price up beyond a few thousand dollars which means unless he can attract those other couple high rollers on the day he decides to sell, he might never get anywhere close to his investment back.

Has it ever occurred to some people that all these sealed CIB Stadium Events that are popping up on eBay are most likely counterfeit? I find it interesting that all these people NOW have the sealed copies of Stadium Events. You would have thought that they would have sold them before.

It is known that there are machines that will seal up a box for you that you can buy for cheap.....right?

Shadow Kisuragi
02-28-2010, 03:18 PM
Zthun, it's hard to have a copy with no noticeable wear and reproduce the factory seal exactly. I would hope said collector would have the game finely examined for that type of issue as well.

I will say that I'm skeptical about the latest sealed copy though...the hangtab isn't yellowed and looks brand new.

True that, but it also occured to me that perhaps there are more copies out there that most people realize. Perhaps so many copies that it might drop the price drastically. But who knows.

Well, what I want to say can't be said unless I risk auto-banning, but there is one thing I can say to that member...really? I mean...really?

It would be nice if an entire warehouse was uncovered that contains thousands of CIB/sealed copies. I think the member will have a coronary...

Maybe I'm just mean-spirited, but I hope that happens. It's one thing to be crazy enough and have enough disposable income to buy the game for your own personal collection, but hoarding them is just scummy. Anyone trying to artificially inflate the prices of games is doing a disservice to the collecting community. And, besides, if this guy has tens of thousands to blow on CIB copies of Stadium Events, then I imagine he could afford to ultimately lose a thousand or two on his investment and experience a hard-learned lesson.

While high profile auctions can certainly encourage sealed game fraud, they also inform the general population of the fact that a game they may have thought nothing about in storage somewhere is valuable. This used to happen all the time in the early days of Ebay and almost like clockwork, once one ultra rare item was sold for a large amount, inevitably, several others would pop up in the following weeks. Personally, I'm excited about the fact that this auction is getting coverage in more mainstream on-line media as it means more copies of this game and perhaps others formerly thought rare will be available.

My guess is that ALL of the sealed Stadium Events that have popped up are counterfeit. Honestly, in the current economy, when people are desperate enough, they will do ANYTHING for money. Selling a counterfeit reproduction of the game along with a sealed reproduction of the box is not something that would surprise me. If this game was truly rare, a whole bunch of sealed copies would not be popping up all over eBay.

People don't spend thousands of thousands of dollars if they can't tell a fake from a legit seal. The $40k auction was 100% legit and everyone and their mother knew this second one was a reseal. It is as clear as day.

...before anyone asks, I didn't go through with the counterfeit idea. I wouldn't be stupid enough to put a new hangtab on the box and would include the photos from the other auction if asked.

I think the price on it now is someone with a low feedback account that's trying to protect unwitting consumers (which would be nice, but doubtful) or a shill bidder (most likely).
