No, no, definitely not directed at you. I've heard other folks making similar remarks elsewhere, not just here. Didn't mean to appear to single you out.

I stand corrected on many points you made, and I was hasty in posting (perhaps I was simply quoting something I've heard my whole life instead of properly researching it, and once having done so, it's a bit of an "oh yeah, duh" moment), but I would argue binocular vision is the most important part of depth perception (not a small part) and with one eye, this is gone, severely limiting the ability to perceive depth. I would also argue depth perception of any kind in the real world is an illusion (a trick of our senses to help us understand our surroundings), making any 3D high-tech sometimes no worse.

Yeah, sorry, I wasn't really sure how to interpret what you said and didn't put a whole lot of thought into it. And yes, I misspoke when I said that stereopsis only "played a small part". What I meant was that it was only one of many possible ways to perceive depth perception. And I completely agree that depth perception of any kind is an illusion.

I honestly have no idea how the 3DS will work since Nintendo has released few details. But in researching it (and similar technologies over the years) it seems like the only thing that makes sense for them to do. Like I already said, all we can do is wait until June.

And I seriously doubt I'll be buying one, (until it's become retro that isLOL). I'm more interested in the technology behind it.

Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in the dictionary?
It's on google so I'm still ok

So I was right when I figured that this Nintendo 3DS announcement was an untimely move considering the DSI XL was about to launch here. And now I know why (http://www.industrygamers.com/news/nintendo-may-have-been-forced-to-reveal-3ds-by-press/). So Nintendo basically just wanted to announce this before it got leaked by the Japanese press. I'm guessing they originally wanted to save this announcement for their E3 press conference.

The vibration control branches off way before the LCD even comes into play. While the tactile feedback might be linked to stylus input, it's a misnomer to throw out "vibrating screen" me thinks. Pretty sure the whole unit will vibrate, not just the screen. :p

Vibration functions are not exactly new, so... WTF?

I figured as much. Nintendo would have released the DSi XL and everyone would have bought it unaware of the 3DS being developed for release, then Nintendo throws the 3DS out there to the people to repurchase, only to make another version of the same system six months down the road saying they didn't have enough technology to make the screen brighter or the buttons not suck(Lite only) or whatever excuse they come up with this time.

Since Nintendo is forced to release the news, everyone is like. "Atleast Nintendo is kind enough to let us know when they're releasing a new system before we buy the XL." Besides, two weeks prior, forced or not, I'm sure they were probably hoping most people don't see the news and the others just didn't care.

Nintendo has always used these types of sales tactics to gouge the consumers. Every console they release it's the same. If it's not 100 revisions of a handheld one after another, it's holding a game first party titles and throwing them on the next gen console to get more sales, or completely dropping support of a prior generation the day the next generation console comes out, or releasing tons of accessories that even they themselves don't support.

That's the same thing I was thinking. Looks like they're just adding a rumble feature. Now what would be cool is if the stylus could vibrate and it's position could be detected. Then it would simulate touch when it "touched" the objects that appear to be floating in air. That, however, does not appear to be the case here.

I've been seeing rumors that Pokemon Black/White will be a launch title for the 3DS.

I think I'll hold off on getting one. When the price drops on the 3DSiXL, then I'll think about it.

3DSiXL³

I expect that to be released within the second year.

And it will print money...

Will be very interesting to see if the 3D and rumble are indeed integrated or linked somehow. Maybe that is where motion detection comes into play? Since there is no input until you make contact with the screen... Oh shit, what if the 3D stuff is not just tactile responsive (rumble) to the stylus, but also input enabled on that perceived 3D image over the screen? Unifying tactile FB, motion detection and the 3D display. Now that would be insane. :D
