View Full Version : Playing PSone games on a PS2

I've been interested in getting a PSone for a little while now. But in looking at the prices for them on Ebay and places, I've noticed that they aren't exactly cheap.
So I was thinking that maybe it would be better if I just got a PS2 instead to play my PSone games on.
I have the opportunity to get a used PS2 for 100 bucks straight up.
My question is, is there any downside to playing PSone games on a PS2?
Is it an emulator, or does it actually have like a mini PSone built into the system?
Do some games not work on it?
What would be the downside to playing PSone games on a PS2?
Thanks for any replies.

Well, you need a PS1 memory card to save those games and a PS2 memory card to save the PS2 games, but that's about the only "downside" I can see.

It emulates. Make sure that PS2 reads bue backed and clear backed discs or you will be springing for a repair charge too.
blue = CDROM game
clear = DVDROM game
Some PS1 games won't work, but they are few and far between.

PS2 can also improve the graphic quality of most your PSX games as well.

Actually, it doesn't emulate. I'm not sure about the technical details, but basically the PS1's CPU/motherboard manages the controller ports in the PS2. Thus whenever a PS1 game is played, it simply uses that CPU instead (and I assume borrows from the main PS2 RAM/bus/etc.)...in other words actual PS1 hardware for the most part.

Correct. There is a ps1 chip inside that is devoted to playing PS1 games.

Certain Psone games won't work with Ps2 like Mortal kombat trilogy which will lock out and freeze all the time when you play it.
But other then that, Ps2 is worth buying.

Well this is my experience playing PS1 games on my PS2....I dont. IMHO, I dont think its a good idea. I also dont play CD ps2 games on my system. The Cd's are lighter in weight and fly around to fast in the drive, possibly scratching your disk. It never happened to me, but I,ve seen it happen to other people.
Hey I can be wrong. I play my PS1 games on the system it was really made for...my PS1. I had my PS1 for 7 years and it still works like new.Back when I got it, Sony had anounced(finally) to not let it stay plugged in when not using it. I followed that advice. Also, if you read the PS2 MANUAL< IT SAYS TO UNPLUG WHEN NOT USING IT...I know im going a little off the subject, but I thought I would throw in a little of my experiences. :D

The following Playstation games have have been reported to be partially or entirely incompatibile with the Playstation 2:
Arcade Party Pak
Atari Collection 2
Fighter Maker
Final Fantasy Anthology
Intl Track & Field
Judge Dredd
Monkey Hero
MK Trilogy
Tomba
Who Wants to be a Millionare?
Of those, I have Tomba, Arcade Party Pak, and Atari Collection 2. Tomba doesn't work at all, only three of the six games on Arcade Party Pak will play, and I don't remember what the situation is with Atari Collection 2.
I also play my Playstation games on a Playstation rather than a PS2, partially because of the incompatibility problems, and partially because it's cheaper to replace a Playstation than a PS2 at this time. Not that I'm overly worried about screwing up my PS2, but since I have the space in my game lair for both, why mess with it? On the other hand, I've heard that some Playstation games benefit greatly from the optional texture smoothing feature in the PS2. I haven't really explored this (mostly because you have to set the option each time you boot up the PS2, and besides, I usually use my PS instead), but it's something to think about.
I haven't heard about any reliability problems with the PSone, and so I'll probably get one for everyday use in place of my older model Playstations, which would come out for link-cable games.

Huh, I had no trouble with MK Trilogy, the greatest hits version at least...Strange...My PS2 rocks!

Hmmmmmm...my PS2 runs FF Anthology fine. Weird. And I play all my PS1 games in the PS2...never had a problem, and I have a release day PS2. I've never had a problem with it reading ANY media either. Guess I've just been lucky :)

I've had absolutely no problem playing PSOne games on my PS2. Hell, to me it's the PS2's most redeeming feature. I've played through plenty of lengthy PSOne RPG's using my PS2 and I've never had a problem.
Although, when i got the system I got it with Tekken Tag and SSX... 2 days later both games had 2 huge ass circular scratches. I returned the games and got 2 new ones, but I didn't do anything about the system. I've never had any problems since... the only thing I can think of is that someone stepped on the PS2 while it was in use to make those scratches.

While I haven't played it extensively (probably 30 min. worth), I have Tempest X and it works fine....
@bargora: on Atari Collection 2 the only game that won't work is Paperboy.

The scratching problem isn't a big issue. It's usually happens one of two ways: the PS2 is jarred VERY sharply while playing, or it's stepped on in some way. In both of those situations, the disc can be knocked into the tray that it spins just above, and hitting that plastic at potentially very high speeds is what causes the scratches. This can happen with a PSX as well, but since the disc clips securely on the spindle, and spins at relatively low speeds, you have to use tremendous force to damage the disc, and you'll usually end up misaligning the spindle clip long before ruining a disc.

Heh, I always wondered what exactly happened to the discs. Guess someone must have kicked the system.

That is true. If you want proof, play WipeOut 3 or Vagrant Story with texture smoothing enabled. The results are amazing, particularly in WipeOut 3, you'd think you were playing an actual PS2 game.
Since I don't have enough space in my setup for a PS and a PS2, I've been using my PS2 to play PS games, although I hope to make the space to have my PS in my setup so I can strictly play PS games on it, (except for the ones that look great with the help of the PS2, which isn't much).

I was just playing Bushido Blade on my PS2. BB always struck me as a bit rough in the graphical department on the Playstation, but I really like what the PS2's Smooth Texture option does for the game.

I've never seen one compatibity issue that couldn't be solved by turning the 'faster disc access' and 'smoother graphics' options back off.
maybe it's just me tho.

I play all of my PSX games on my PS2. I don't remember any game ever giving me a problem. Also, I always turn on the load-time speedup and the graphic enhancements, results defnitely vary with those but I've been satisfied with the results.

Tempest X works fine on my PS2 as well. I was just playing it the other day when trying to figure out what wberdan was referring to on the bonus stages from last week's thread. No issues.

I play all my PS1 games on the PS2, and so far had no problems whatsoever.
The games look better, 1) becasue of the PS2 capabilities, 2) I have my Ps2 on component video vs. S-video of the PS1, and I can tell you...Castlevania SOTN looks fantastic and so does Vagrant Story with cleaner, crisper textures.
Since the PS2 is out and about, I hardly used my PS1.

Put me for another vote for FFA working fine.
The games I HAVE had problems playing on a PS2 are X-Files and Grandia. X-Files has graphical issues, and Grandia will lock up at random points in the game, no reason.
Also, this may be another thread, but can someone post a list of all PS1 games that they found worked with the Graphical Enhancement AND/OR Faster Loading options for the PS2? I've tried those with all my games, and it either causes the game to lock or no effect. :o

Raedon's wrong. Tempest X will play on PS2. Also, Judge Dredd works on mine, even though it sucks for the most part.
My PS2 will play even the scratchiest of games. Fingerprints, rough scratches, it doesn't care. Is the lens on PS2 better? Still, I need to try this GH Mortal Kombat Trilogy...

I use a PS1 to play PS1 games because I'm worried about wear and tear on my PS2. PS2 has a reputation for breaking down, and it's happened to a couple of friends of mine.
Therefore I don't use my PS2 for PS1 games or to play DVD's.
Just my 2 cents.

How do you turn on these graphical enhancements? I don't see it under any system options...do you need to press something while a PS1 game is booting or is it automatic?

Both of those have to be turned on manualy, due to the fact that they DO often cause problems in games. :o Hence why I asked if anyone had a list of the games they had that it did work.
You know the default PS2 menu you get when you turn the system on and there is'nt a CD in it? Hit Triangle and then hit it again. You'll see the choices there.

I heard some people complaining that they really didn't like what graphical enhancement did to Final Fantasy VII.

The PS2 faster loading screws up some games, especially in making the music playing too fast. My Colin Mcrae Rally 2 had this problem. x_x

What can we conclude from this thread's comments? That Sony has made the PS2 a unpredictable console: it is weird that some PS1 games will run fine on some PS2s but not others... as if there were several revisions of the console with different compatibility issues.
I think that, when I finally get a PS2, I'll keep my PSOne for my RPGs and all (besides, the tiny PSOne is more easily moved around than the PS2, thanks to its compact size). Nothing beats playing the Final Fantasy games in bed (well, except maybe Eternal Darkness).

The only PS1 game I've been unable to run on my Pal PS2 has been Alien Resurrection so I'm happy enough with the emulation. :)

Well, I do know that recently Sony released version 9 of the PS2, so including overseas models there are at least 10 variations. It would appear that some play PS1 games better than others. I know for a fact that Ultimate Mortal Kombat (PSX) will NOT play on my PS2 with any setting, so if it plays on someone else's, that means either there are slight variations either in the game itself or the console hardware.
I have literally hundreds of PSX games. When I bought my PS2 I was very concerned that it would play them. I would say that within a month, I narrowed down what PS1 games I played to a small handfull.
The PS3 is supposed to play PS2 and PS1 compatible. It will be interesting to see what does and doesn't work on it.

The problem with playing FFA on a PS2 is that it will sometimes corrupt your save file.
SoulBlazer
11-01-2003, 06:07 PM
I've been palying FFA since it came out -- no problems with the save file. :o
I heard that some copies of the first run of the game would'nt work in some PS2 units, but that was it. Nothing about save file problems.

Well, this may sound daft, but i'm in the UK and run my consoles through RGB scart leads, and I think that PS1 games on a PS1 look better than PS1 games on a PS2. Thats with both consoles on the same TV.
I'm not overly keen on the PS2s smoothing on PS games, and in normal mode I think the PS1 looks better.........thered just something not quite right about them on the PS2...I really noticed it on vagrant story.
