Microsoft is cutting prices (http://www.edge-online.com/news/e32010-xbox-360-slim-announced) of the existing Xbox range to $149 for the basic Arcade model, and $249 for the upgraded Elite.

Sure, but don't you think it's pretty annoying when they're basically telling existing customers "Yo, come upgrade!"

Not particularly

They have to do something or no one would buy this stuff and no one would publish XBLA games since you'd just be able to share and there'd be no reason to buy. It beats how Nintendo handles it since there's a way to retrieve your content easily and you can even make it work offline again.

I like how PSN handles it more (5 activations), but at the rate 360's have died there's a decent amount of people that would be out of activations on some of their content by now.

OK...

But if you obviously upgrade to a new console then there should be a provision that makes the transition as smooth as possible. One transfer per year is arbitrary as hell, especially when there are extremely easy ways to prove you just bought a new 360.

For someone buying a redesigned 360 this week to not be able to use the license transfer tool, it means he must've bought a brand new 360 and used the license transfer utility sometime over the past 12 months to associate his content licenses with his new 360.

For those that have had repairs done and to have licenses transferred, Microsoft initiates the process after repairs and it doesn't count towards that one transfer in a 12 month period limit. This once a year limitation won't affect anyone deciding to upgrade who has recently had a console failure that was repaired by MS and had to transfer licenses after recieving a replacement console.

I guess it sucks for the couple of dozen people that have just recently bought a brand new 360, utilized the license transfer utility to play their content offline, and the next month decide to buy another brand new 360 to replace it. But most people that buy a game console will use it for longer then 12 months before upgrading to a new console.

No, I don't see it as a problem for 99% of the people that decide to upgrade to this new model.

But it's a simple fix for the few that it does prove to be a problem. Not implementing it is foolish.

They are all over the Microsoft booth and look really neat. I put my ear up to it and it was quiet and surprisingly cool considering it was in a hard plastic case.

Here it comes... The one question, surprisingly, no one has asked yet...

anyone seen them in stores, yet?

I think if Amazon ever drops the price of the Arcade to $99 (in the past, they have dropped the console to $150), I will pick up a backup unit.

Nothing yet in stores, but Sears does take a long time to get merchandise.

Theres also going to be a new (http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6265465/new-200-xbox-360-planned-elite-and-arcade-getting-50-price-cut) slim arcade unit coming in the future. No word on it's features yet but theres speculation that it might actually include a hard drive this time. It will retain the $199 price point of it's predecessor (before it got clearanced).

They may say they have done the swap, and that all you need to do is 'redownload' the games/content to the new drive, but that has not been the case for me the two times that I've had systems die. I've followed their attached instructions only to have no access to a big chunk of my XBLA games when XBL is down (or I can't access it).

That sucks. Which games? I've always had trouble accessing certain Sega XBLA games when I'm "offline" (which is almost never, but still). They become trial versions. The only solution is to re-download them and that usually returns them to the full version until I shut down the 360.

That happened to me and I thought it was just a fluke.

Then you haven't done the license transfer process. I have most of the Sega XBLA games except for 3 or 4, with most having been purchased on a earlier console. And doing the user activated license transfer restored offline access to the content just like it should.

Sometimes even if you do everything properly it will still fail. Neither the console nor the service are bug free.

I plan on transfering my 120 gig hard drive to the new 250 hard drive on the slim. I know I need the transfer cable(I think Micosoft's website is the only place to buy it seperately besides for ebay) and according to people in this thread I also need to go online and transfer my license so that I can play my XBLA games offline. I'm hoping thats a smooth transition but I won't hold my breath.

My friend picked up a slim today.

I wish I had my cell phone on me - in person, they're actually sexy little things. And they weren't joking about it being whisper quiet.

If they have 'em stocked next payday, I can finally retire my launch 360. They have a nice little trade in promotion going for the next few weeks (edit: At Gamestop.. Forgot to put who was doing it! ;) ). You get $130 credit for a 20GB pro model (that's after you trade in the HD after transferring it...And of course, you have to pay for the transfer kit.)

Oh, and they have transfer cables in most stores, now, for $20. And they're NIB.

I just picked up mine. Gamestop had a 100 promo plus 30 for a 20 gig or 40 for the 120. There are also games that get 25 there are 50 games that they are giving 25 for. I traded tatsunko, smash brothers.

I was so torn on which to trade I had a halo3 console and an elite. I kept the Halo.

With edge I got about 195. Came out of pocket 122. It is very nice and the front sides and rear seem cool the only heat is coming from the cpu fan vent on the top.

I am also surprised they stopped includeing the component cables.

A lot of shipments arrived late afternoon so calling around one might be able to grab one.

I forgot about BC I popped in indigo prophecy and it played.

I've been debating on rather to get one now with Gamestop's trade in deal or to just wait for the ineviatble Kinect bundle that comes out this holiday. I have a bunch of Best Buy gift cards so either way I wouldn't be paying full price.

It may pay to wait a few months. Kotaku is reporting a $199 360 slim coming in this Fall.
