I'm beginning to suspect that I am neither interesting nor desirable at all and that the women who come to my apartment for game nights are actually only interested in my large collection of 2D fighters, alcohol, and Wasabi and Soy Sauce Almonds.
First Breath of Fire for SNES sucks.
Final Fantasy VI is better than FFVII.
The entire SNES and Saturn jRPG library is awesome.
Most jRPGs for PSX & PS2 sucks.
Deluxe Ski Jump (DOS), Sensible Soccer and Nakketsu Soccer League are the best sports games ever.

Saturn had better 3D than PS1, yet worse 2D, and its American controller design was superior.
Wha? That's just factually wrong, that's not even an opinion, haha. Saturn 2D was better, and the 3D was worse.
Saturns US library was terrible. Make a topic asking for Saturn recommendations along with a rule for no "Buy an import cart", and watch people stumble for several posts.
I've gotta disagree with that, I've found a ton of excellent games for Saturn released in the US:
Panzer Dragoon, Zwei, Saga
Sega Rally Championship
NiGHTS into Dreams...
Burning Rangers
Fighters Megamix
Die Hard Arcade
Fighting Vipers
Daytona USA
X-Men Children of the Atom
Street Fighter Alpha 2
World Series Baseball II
Shining the Holy Ark
Shining Force III
Virtua Fighter 2
Guardian Heroes
Sonic R
Sonic Jam
Earthworm Jim 2
The only problem is that most of these titles are ridiculously expensive. And you can't find them, haha.

oh ho. This is my thread. Ready?
1) Final Fantasy VII is the best game in the FF series
2) Final Fantasy VII also embodies everything currently WRONG with the FF series to this day.
I firmly believe both, as contradictory as they sound.
3) Atari system rankings! 5200 >> 7800 >> 2600
the 7800 >> 2600 is logistically sound, since the 7800 can play both it's own library plus the 2600's without an attachment. That being said:
The 5200 is essentially an 8-bit Atari computer. If you get your hands on a working 5200 controller, it brings hands down the best fun Atari brought to the gaming table other than a legit 8-bit computer.
4) Turn Based RPGs are very fun... until 3D ruined the genre
Now 3D didn't "ruin" the Turn-RPG like it did other genres (fighters, I'm looking at you) - however as soon as 3D started getting into RPGs, it became all about the graphics. RPGs are meant to tell a story, since really they're two steps away from being a visual novel. However as many in the tech community will tell you: "Innovation comes from restriction"
I love FFVII but it's in the minority of 3D rpgs I can even stand. Others include Granstream Saga and... um. Er. OK. I guess that's it.
Zelda doesn't get lumped in with this, nor do strategy-rpgs, to keep the fanboys at bay.
this leads nicely to:
5) 3D ruined Fighting games
Yep. I said it. You know why? Go count how many frames are in Ryu's fireball in Street Fighter IV.
Oh wait. You can't. No frames. HOW DO I CANCEL? Argh.
Finally, the most off the wall opinion I have that others hate:
6) Caring about gamerscores mean you have a small penis.
God. Dammit.
Xbox Live and PSN can suck my nonexistant crank. It takes a step-by-step progression to describe, but logically if it weren't for gamerscores and constant prick waving through said accounts, we wouldn't be at a position where, say, instead of beating Assassin's Creed 2 to unlock a sweet/creepy Harlequin outfit, you have to preorder at Gamestop to get it.
Or pay $4 for a download pack.
Bullshit.
Extra characters/outfits/goodies were called something before the current gen: Unlockables. You unlocked them through gameplay and skill.
Now it's either purchases, pre-orders, or some meta-score that links through other games or genres.
As for gamerscores themselves, I don't care if your first time playing Call of Duty: Whatever give your gamerscore a 100 point boost. That's a broken system. It's like getting 400 pts. on your SATs just for writing your name.
I hate gamerscores, I hate current-gen systems. I will get one, and play the games after they're no longer allowed on xbox live or psn.
Or, I'll get a botched modded one that can't go online. I don't want a Live or PSN account. I don't care, I don't care about your score, I don't care about your gamercard in your sig.
Fuck gamerscores. Fuck them hard. Worst 'innovation' in gaming today.

I've always been willing to consider the Jaguar a 64-bit system, regardless of how many underwhelming specs that critics try to point out.
Just like I am willing to call the Turbografx 16 a "16-bit system" even if the same type(s) of people produce one spec after another proving it to really be "8-bit."

- The Atari 5200 is a fantastic gaming system.
- The only people justified in waxing nostalgic about gaming are those who are old enough to remember the hobby before 1990...maybe even 1985.
- The stereotypical characterization that the average gamer lacks acceptable social skills is largely justified.

Most Western made games aren't fun.
Shmups have more replay value than RPGs.
Dead or Alive is better than Virtua Fighter.

The Street Fighter EX series is better than Street Fighter IV
Sega Master System, Turbo Grafx-16, and Sega Saturn are great consoles.
Virtual Boy doesn't ruin your eyes.
Castlevania Bloodlines is the best classic CV game.
The only good third party N64 games are the Konami and Treasure games.
2D Zelda games are better than the 3D ones.
Golden Axe Warrior for Sega Master System is better than any of the 2D Zelda games.

I have a few:
Halo fans are virgins who cannot get laid
People under 17 should get automatically kicked off of "M" rated games on Xbox Live. Most of the bullshit happens because of these kids who are playing these games because of the parents' irresponsibility.
The last good Final Fantasy RPG game was VIII
Any of the "Celda" games suck(excluding Minish Cap, even that was WAAAY too short)
Developers don't give a shit anymore. They just want to rush a game out and get all the money they possibly can.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 was complete shit. It was made to be an expansion pack, and it feels that way. It just feels like a fan mod, which is an insult to call it that, because I've seen BETTER fan mods for the Wii! Word to the wise, if you're going to add a whole new game, FIX THE CONTROLS TO CATER TO THAT GAME!!!!
Metroid: Other M was bullshit. It's not a throwback to the original, it's a bastardization of it. HEY! I have all of this cool shit....but, I'm not going to use them until my boyfriend says so. Samus went from a badass to this. It was a complete fuck up. And Reggie wonders why it never reached a million copies......
Final Fantasy VII is the most overrated game of all time. It was good. But, it is NOT GOD, if you know what I mean....
NES is the best system ever made. PERIOD!
Why the hell are people complaining about games costing $60 each? This is the thing that REALLY pisses me off. They bitch and moan about games costing "way too much". But, they don't have it so lucky. I'm 24 and it's weird to hear someone my age giving an "old man" speech, but here it is:
You complain about games being $50-60. It's too damn high, you say. You people have it SO LUCKY! You have something called the INTERNET to check out a game first to see if it is worth your money. You have DEMOS to check them out firsthand! We had NONE of those growing up. We had game magazines and rental places which we had to PAY for at $5 a pop! We didn't get to try it out for free unless we had a friend that had it. $50-60? That's a BARGAIN! We used to pay $60-70 for our games. Sometimes MORE! So, quit your bitching! If you want the game, then get it. If not, then DON'T!

Basically, Resident Evil 5 continued what RE4 started, but took gameplay a step too far into the "Action" genre and completely forgot about survival horror. I didn't even feel like I was playing a Resident Evil game. *sigh*

Not everyone gives an "old man speech" with regards to game pricing! Some of us are just plain cheap...or as they call me at work "Lord Cheapstake!" LOL
For me, it's always been either:
a) $60 for ONE game, or
b) A group of games for $60
So if a game is $10 a few months (or years) from now, getting six games at $10 a piece sure beats getting one game for $60! Sure, I have to wait...but the best things in life are worth waiting for!
Yes, yes...I am stingy...I know. :)

i never really liked contra or goldeneye and never understood why everyone says you have to like them if you like games. they are jsut not fun to me. 007 is more fun to me then goldeneye now. there are a few other games too but i can't think of them now.
real gamers play with keyboard and mouse. sorry but a controller is a lot better to me then a keyboard with 101 keys and having to guess what each buttons does. look at the controllers and a min latter forget what everything is. this is one reason i never liked pc games besides being a lot of money.
don't agree with these.
games are about graphics
games are for kids

Console manufacturers have been lying to you about bits.
TurboGrafx-16 was really 8-bits, not 16-bits. It had an 8-bit CPU with two 16-bit graphics accelerators.
Neo Geo was really 16-bits, not 24-bits. That is unless you add the 16-bit CPU and the 8-bit sound processor together. Of course if you did that then the Super Nintendo and the SEGA Genesis would also be 24-bit.
Atari Jaguar was at best 32-bit, not 64-bit. The CPU was 16-bit and the GPU was 32-bit. Like the TurboGrafx-16, it is called 64-bit on the merit of its graphics accelerators.
Things get a bit blurry with the "128-bit" generation. From what I can see the Dreamcast, GameCube and Xbox should be called 32-bit while the PlayStation 2 should be called 64-bit. However, their processors are capable of handling certain types of 128-bit data and thus could be labeled as hybrids similar to how the M68000 in the Genesis, Amiga, Jaguar and others is really considered a 16-bit/32-bit (or 16/32) hybrid. To consider them 128-bit is to consider the Genesis 32-bit.
And while we're talking about hybrids, the N64 CPU is a 32/64 and its coprocessor looks like it can be called a 64/128.. so, ummm... I guess the N64 is really a 32/64/128?O_O
Also, bits don't really matter.

*Slams palm on computer desk* THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It's nice to see that I'm not alone! Because let's be "real" with each other, when the hell was the last time that EA really added ANYTHING to Madden? I'd say 2001 when it came out on the PS2. Thank God for the Dreamcast! We as Dreamcast owners were spared from the Madden bullshit!
Speaking of the devil, here's a few more after talking with friends:
-NFL2K whoops any Madden game ANY DAY!
-NES Play Action Football is better than Tecmo Bowl
-They should rename Madden to Roster Update
-Anyone who buys Madden on launch day needs to seriously get laid
-Chicks come BEFORE games. If a woman wants you, you put down the controller immediately and tender to her. You can get to level 96 any day, but you only have one shot to make an eternal memory. I cannot tell you how many times I see that and it sickens me. She wants to make love to you and all you want to do is play Final Fantasy. Seriously, where is your manhood?
-In my book, the Dreamcast should be number 2, behind the NES in terms of best console ever. Counting Japanese games, and even just on the US lineup, The Dreamcast was a fitting swan song. Some of the best games EVER made it to that system. What Sega did was so original that to this day, nobody can come close to matching it. Games like Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Confidential Mission, Crazy Taxi, 18 Wheeler, Headhunter, Rez, Typing of the Dead, and especially my favorite RPG of all time behind Pokemon Gold and Silver: Skies of Arcadia, were reason enough to love the Dreamcast. Then factor in some of the best ports of the best games, like Resident Evil 2 and 3, the countless Capcom fighters, Ikaruga, and so many others, it's no wonder that the little white box will always be in my heart.

Still don't believe me? This oughta getcha:
*Super Mario Bros: You are an Italian plumber, stomping on other Goombas and Koopas(who suspiciously do a jive walk), collecting coins, and trying to reach the big titted blonde at the end of the castle so you can hook up with her. What's even more hilarious is that Super Mario Brothers started a condition in platformers to this day, that I've officially called "Wop Grease".
Here's the definition as I wrote to Urban Dictionary:
The unfortunate practice in a video game, usually a platform game, where the character you're controlling can make a jump no problem, but lands and somehow slips off into the abyss. Gets its name from being introduced in Super Mario Brothers, as you character is an Italian plumber and the stereotype that Italians are very greasy.
I would've beaten World 8-1 no problem, but Mario slipped on his wop grease making that one jump and I lost my last life.
Yeah, I thought so....
-I think Final Fantasy VIII was better than VII
-Bioshock is the best first-person shooter EVER! Not because of all the cool shit, because it really makes you think. The overtones and story in those two games hit home with this country on so many levels. Bioshock is basically what happened when people were allowed too much power and took advantage of it. It's a warning if anything about the dangers of a capitalist government. But, it's sad that the average gamer won't realize that....

can i make this entire post my sig?
unintentional comedy post of the year
I think it would be too big. But, definitely put the Mario one there. It's so sad, it's true and funny at the same time.
Someone told me that as a kid and as a grown up, I realize that it is sadly true....
@Commander. I've never been married, although I came close. She passed when a drunk driver slammed into her car. But, I was always taught to treat the woman like a queen. But, I also have that damn Sam Kinison face stuck in my head and his whole speech about marriage.
"I'm not scared of hell. Know why? Because I was MARRIED FOR TWO FUCKIN' YEARS!"
So, I guess I'll really know when it happens for me. Right now, I have my family to worry about..

Gamestop is not the embodiment of pure evil some portray it to be.
People who complain about about achievements forget the days when getting the high score in a game was a big deal. While I don't care for achievement whoring or playing a game solely for achievements. I do find well thought out achievements enjoyable to unlock, though I don't really care if I ever get all 1000 points. Really at the base level, gamerscore/trophy count/whatever is really just the return of high score competitions for some.

One of the major reasons I decided to go with an Xbox360 for my current gen system of choice is because, as an American, I believe it's important for me to support an American-made game console.

I'm pretty sure it's made in China, here's footage of a manufacturing plant in China making Xbox 360s.

I think he's saying that a majority of the money goes to fund an American company.
Doesn't really matter. Japanese or American, it's all made in China.
As for me, I don't see the appeal behind most turn-based RPGs.

That's kind of my point, I would only go out of my way to support a specific company based on nationality if it helped create local jobs. Since all the production is overseas, I don't see what difference it makes which console to buy. No matter who owns the companies, they're already rich so I don't really care who I support.
I would decide on which console to buy based on reliability, price, and selection of available titles.

I agree. This is the method I use. If a company rushes a faulty product to market, I don't buy it or support it. A lot of people do though.

This is so fuckin' right...you don't even know how right you are! I remember paying $77 for the SNES Mortal Kombat II; and remember, this was way back in the day when arcade-to-home translations were just that...translations. No extra bonus modes or side-stories to capture our attention like stuff in more recent times. On top of that, we didn't even get anywhere close to arcade-perfect translations back then either! This was all common practice back then. Nobody really cared. We just paid the price and went along with it. Even in the early PSX era, I still remember paying $60+ for some of those games. Twisted Metal 2 comes to mind. I love retro games far more than the current generation because of the simple gameplay, but c'mon, admit it...the majority of these games that we paid insane amounts of money for look like shit and they don't really validate the high price-tags that they came attached with.
With the skyrocketing costs and added complexities of developing games nowadays and all of the extra content that comes stuffed in our games (not including DLC, but that's another rant altogether), $50-$60 is relatively cheap in my opinion. I would've killed to play some of these games in my childhood. It's just that those of us who've been around awhile have become a bunch of spoiled, jaded asses who don't realize how good we have it.

I diagree with the the high price of $59, MANY people have to carefully choose which game they want the most out of their wish list, and only buy another one that they want after they come up with some extra cash down the line. Games don't need to be that damn expensive. Take a look at new release DVDs, they are mostly $15 to $19, and they also have huge development costs. However, they make up for it by selling large quantities of discs at a reasonable price. I'll buy a new release DVD here and there because it's an affordable entertainment choice, but I rarely will buy a new release game because the price is too outrageously high. If new release games were $20 like DVDs, they would sell a hell of a lot more, and they'd make a ton of more cash.

If movies didn't have the national and international cinema market to subsidize production costs they would likely be more expensive than they are. Oh sure you have the odd direct to DVD film but those are usually low budget or independant releases and don't cost as much as a major theatrical release in the first place.
Adjusting for inflation games today are actually cheaper than they were years ago. Consider this as well most games nowadays clock in at around 8 hours to complete, that's at least 3-4 movies so per hour of entertainment you are actually at the same amount.

Agreed! (Well, no the GC controller beats it) But, I'm always puzzled when people complain about the controller poking them in the stomach or it being too small for their hands. Can only conclude they are unusually large or have abnormally sized hands.
it is more the analog stick that hurts my thumb. got a superpad/mako pad and like that analog a lot better. it is jsut real hard and digs into your thumb.

The 32X is awesome. The game library is small, but the sweet games on there are absolutely fantastic.
Ikaruga and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike suck. Both games I gave multiple shakes to try and get into, and failed each time. I'll play them, but I find the former to be goony puzzle/bullet hell game, and the latter to have destroyed the spacing and traps of other SF games in favor of a guessing game with three broke-ass characters.
The N64 controller is very comfortable, and quite easy to hold. How many games seriously use the analog stick AND the d-pad at the same time?
Street Fighter II HD Remix is superior to Super Street Fighter II Turbo in practically every regard.

Nintendo 64 took video game graphics as far as they ever needed to go, and is the best console ever hands down.
Sega Genesis is much more multi-faceted console than Super Nintendo.
I don't think this one is controversial, but INTELLIVISION SUCKS SO BAD!!!
EDIT: The Nintendo 64 control is awesome, intuitive and ergonomic/comfortable to hold & use.
There are two types of video game buy/sell stores. One where you can sit and talk to the owner for hours about the ins and outs of classic gaming, and the other where they label every single game with a different price sticker, and any game that has a name (e.g. Super Mario Bros. 3) is ridiculously marked at like $25, and when you try to talk to the person working there they have no real interest in games and don't know anything, they're just in it for the money. Sadly most of the stores I have around me are the second kind.

Nintendo 64 was better than the PSX-
-Better processor/chipset (64/32-bit on par with Pentium II)
-Better sound setup (Ability to output in Dolby Surround, anyone?)
-Expandability (64DD port, Expansion Pak, onboard cart chips, etc.)
-Less crap game-wise (Did N64 get so many liscenced games? No, it just got a glut of racing games, which is much better than "Dora X the Y" eight times a year.)
-Better analog controller (N64 was better designed compared to the awkward tank controls of the Dual Shcok.)
-More durability (Can't scratch a cartridge easily, can you?)
Overall, N64 was better than the PSX. Screw CD audio, videos and loading time, I want actual gameplay.

My bad, I meant better than the sound chip in the PSX, which is weak due to most PSX games using stereo CD audio tracks for music. The N64, while without CD audio, had a pretty good sound processor (more like a improved MIDI processor), with games in its later years (Pokemon Stadium 2, Jet Force Gemini, etc.) even boasting Dolby Pro Logic sound capabilities, something the PSX couldn't produce easily, if at all.
Also, I don't get the hate for the N64's controllers. No other controller has three different comfortable ways to be used, along with such a versatile analog stick location, which made flying games and shooters much easier to play. Now, if there ever existed a GCN to N64 controller adapter, then I'd never need the N64 controllers again. :)

Off the top of my head, several N64 games have the Dolby Pro Logic label on them:
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Donkey Kong 64
Jet Force Gemini
Ken Griffey Jr.'s Slugfest
Perfect Dark
Pokemon Stadium 2
Resident Evil 2
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo
etc.

Any system with stereo audio can do Dolby Pro Logic. There are a few (not many, but a few) Genesis and SNES games with it. It's just that in general, developers usually didn't see a reason to bother with it.

I don't like the N64 controller because I don't like holding my hands at two different angles. When I hold the middle and right prong (which is how most games are controlled), I feel like I want to rotate the controller clockwise (and have the left prong jutting out forward), but I can't because of the shape of the prongs.

I agree. Some people think the N64 controller is horrible and think the Jaguar controller is perfect. I don't get that.
To me, Nintendo has always made the most comfortable and most durable controllers.

- The technical blast processing details about a system does not make one "better" than another. The game library makes one better than the other.
- People that make Youtube videos of themselves smashing/torching/exploding games and/or game systems should immediately do the same thing to themselves.
- If you love sport games so much then try going out to play one for real.
- Final Fantasy VII has bland game play, dull characters, an unmemorable story and ruined not only the franchise, but several other franchises as well.
- Whomever thought of selling damage plans for games has no soul.
- Paying to download games is wrong. I need a box, booklet and a cart/disc.
- No person should have a sealed game collection.
- Who ever buys a game for top price and then immediately cashes said game upon completion in a few days is a moron for not renting it instead.
- The Move will attract moths as well as simple people who likes pretty lights.
- Real social gaming is playing TMNT with three of your friends at the mall's arcade.
- True gamers do not immediately engage in owning obvious Christmas season to Summer garage sale fodder gimmicks like Guitar Hero, dance pads, Kinect. These things are only cool to own when all the "cool" people are done with them.
- It is perfectly ok to use game enhancers.
- Owning zillion of ROMs does not make you a retro gamer. You have to have a room of doom to even start of thinking of yourself as a retro gamer.

Yeah, that makes you basically the same as them. You're still letting public influence decide what's cool and when it's cool. You're just applying an offset to the whole process.
- Owning zillion of ROMs does not make you a retro gamer. You have to have a room of doom to even start of thinking of yourself as a retro gamer.
I think you've confused retro gamer with retro collector. A person who plays classic games, regardless of the delivery method, is still playing classic games. The above attitude is just snobbish. I like the original hardware and play on the original hardware, and collect for it too. But I don't have this snobbish attitude that one must 'own' the original hardware to be considered a gamer. Doesn't playing games, make you a gamer? Or did I miss something.
