For me, it would be Super Mario 64 2. Still to this day do I ponder and question of what would have resulted. Ever since the first announcement of it, have I eagerly anticipated the release of this game, but I slowly lost hope of its avail when the Disk drive didn't come to America.

Sonic Xtreme for the Saturn!

I thought of a few more and decided to add them here...

GeoDuel for the Atari Lynx. I used to stare at the screen shots in the back of my Lynx magazine day after day, hoping for it to be released. I think a prototype surfaced but thats as far as it ever got, and I have STILL yet to play or see it in action.

Then there is Dando / Vasum for the Genesis. That game looked like an amazing action RPG. I keep hoping a proto will be found and dumped or maybe SuperFighter Team will somehow get their hands on it, finish it and release it!

I have a few:

WWF No Mercy for the Game Boy Color
Super Mario 64 2
Sonic Xtreme
Eternal Champions for the Saturn
Black Mesa(Half Life remake using the source engine)
Half Life 2: Episode Three
Capcom Fighting All Stars
9 To 5(I would've LOVED to see how the movie could possibly translate into a game...)
Starfox 2

That's just a start....

Zero Racers (Virtual Boy) is perhaps my top answer. I really wish I could play that game... :(

There are some others too, though.

Virtua Hamster (32X, finished version; I know it was almost complete when cancelled...) -- The beta rom that leaked is really, really good. I'd probably pay full price for a working cart copy of this game... even just that little beta is one of the 32X's best games. :)
Mini Racers (N64, completed but never released) - a Micro Machines-ish racing game, from Looking Glass, on the N64, and it wasn't released because Nintendo decided to sit on it instead of releasing the thing, even though it was pretty much done (completed just before Looking Glass went out of business, which happened before it was supposed to be released)... yes, I want this!
Zelda 64DD / Ura Zelda (if it was going to be anything more than just what we got in OoT Master Quest on the Gamecube, by the end of the project)

As for games that didn't get as far along, I think (varies from game to game though):
Fallout 3 (the Black Isle game)
Baldur's Gate 3
Viewpoint 64 (N64) - Looked promising.
that underwater RTS for the N64 I forget the name of at the moment - I love RTSes, so I was looking forward to this...
Conquest 2: The Vyrium Uprising (PC) - The sequel to 2001's pretty good RTS Conquest: Frontier Wars, it's really too bad that this never happened. The game ended with something of a cliffhanger, too. It really needed better sales I guess. :(
the arcade racing game Midway Games West was working on when all Midway arcade development was shut down - Rush 2049, their previous one, is my favorite racing game ever, so of course it would have been amazing to see this finished.
Mario 64 2 (N64)
Mario 128 (Gamecube)
Kirby's Air Ride (the N64 version) - Looked incredible in 1996!
Dead Phoenix (Gamecube) - I thought this game looked the most interesting of the "Capcom Five", and of course it's the only one that never got released. :(
Fire Emblem 64 (N64)
the Dreamcast Castlevania game

Never got past the basic concept, but I wish it'd become an actual game:
the Commander Keen 3d platformer Tom Hall thought up and wished he could make in '95-96 or so, before Mario 64

Etc, etc...

Capcom Fighting All Stars

Might have been interesting to see, but would it actually have been any good?

Woody Pop for the SEGA Master System. It was a Breakout clone and one of the "Coming Soon!" titles listed on those insert flyer posters that I wanted desperately when I was a kid, but it was never released. There was a Game Gear version though, years later...but that's not what I wanted. :bawling:

Golgo 13 for N64.

There was a small preview for it in Nintendo Power but was never released. There's gotta be a proto out there somewhere. Loved the NES games and it would be nice to play a new G13 action game instead of all these stupid 'graphic adventure' games that get released in Japan.

And I'd give anything to play the Twin Peaks game for NES. THQ (I think) was working on it but I don't know how far into production it got and have never seen any screens.

Legions of the Undead for the Atari Jaguar - a zombie-killin' first person RPG using the Alien vs. Predator engine? Sign me up!

T-Mek for the Jaguar. I'm tired of having only the 32X version to play, especially considering that device's flakiness along with that version's slowdown problems.

Dead Rush for the PS2/GC/Xbox/GBA. Activision killed this one off after putting out a good trailer that really got me interested. I love vehicular combat games, and this one is a car-based zombie killing game that looked seriously promising. But I guess Activision wasn't doing well financially, so they cancelled it stating that they couldn't see it selling as big as Halo, so why bother.

I've got loads more, I just can't think of them off the top of my head this morning.

Yep, ads were running in EGM back in '94. Still remember the ad clear as day. Plain black background ad with Lufia title in front center toward the top. Well, maybe not clear as day, heh, but yeah. Huh... I didn't know it never came out, though! :p

As for me, I would have liked to have seen a sequel to LTTP for SNES. Not sure one was ever planned (hence canceled or unreleased) but yeah. Imagine a 32-meg Zelda game in '95 with all the latest in SNES technology trimmings... good stuff!

The Twin Peaks game for NES , but to be honest I don't think they ever even started it .Would also like to see if the Friday the 13th game for the Sega CD got off the ground . The game that most likely was at least started that I would like to try would be the Snake Plissken/Escape from NY game .

Just a port of the original. But it was supposed to have a bunch of added features. They took out ads for it, with the original slated release (Nov. '94 or something) crossed off and the new delayed release written above it (May '95 or so), and proclaiming "It's worth the wait!"

I'd love to see Kaboom and River Raid for the Super Nintendo.

And I'd love to see Test Drive Rally for the Nintendo 64 from DICE (Who went on shortly after cancellation to start work on RalliSport Challenge for the Xbox and PC). Seemed to be shaping up nicely in screenshots and previews.

A ROM has been released for it but I would have tracked down and purchased an official copy of Space Fantasy Zone had it been released.

Lemme think of some others....

Curse for the Genesis. I remember as a kid seeing the 2-page spread of the whole Genesis Does What Nintendon't and seeing the pic for Curse: Quest for the Solar Grail. I dunno why but I was sold on the subtitle alone. There was another game due by Sage's Creation that I can't remember the name to, either Blue's Odyssey or Star Odyssey.

I don't remember what year it was but I was at E3 in '97 and '98 and remember seeing a game for PS1 called Popcorn. I don't know if it got renamed or canceled, but it was a decent title from what I saw of it.

I really wish Mario Kart Arcade GP 1 and 2 got home releases. I would second the Capcom Fighting All-Stars. The game didn't look bad at all, not sure why it got canned. What they ought to do is make Ingrid a DLC for SSF IV.

I need to pick my brain some more and post again later. I KNOW there's more that I'm just not thinking of at the moment.

I believe that Curse was released in Japan. I was always interested in it since it was going to be put out by INTV, the owners of the post-crash Intellivision. But the company died off before they could bring it over.

I'll add a "vote" for Super Mario 64 2. If I recall there was a screenshot of a split-screen mode with Mario and Luigi. What a shame that never saw the light of day, or even something similar in the Galaxy games.

I would have also liked to see the GB Camera option released with Perfect Dark. Today that option is not that big of a deal, but back then I thought that was the coolest option ever. Then they cut it from the final version.

I've seen it before when SM64 2 was refereed too, but it's a fake. That level is in SM64. If there is a real pic, i'd LOVE to see it.

Hmmm, probably. Not sure if it is the same picture I am thinking of, but it sure seems similar. Could have sworn Luigi had a different look, icons for both plumbers lives, rainbows under each rug, and the view was from behind, but no matter. I remember seeing a pic (actually 2 or 3 pics) in some gaming magazine eons ago, maybe this was it and a big April Fool's joke that I just never picked up on. Either way, I know there was talk about Luigi (and co-op) being included in the sequel (or was that just a big hoax too!?).

Maybe I remember a magazine article with the same pics, but believe me, internet searches looking for those pics throughout the years have come up empty handed, so I try to pretend that they never existed, or that they were mere artist renderings. I wonder if a professional research database search of video game magazines from 1997-1999 could uncover this article.

Castlevania Resurrection (DC) - This was at the top of my list of most anticipated Dreamcast games.

Mega Man Anniversary Collection (GBA) - Not a huge loss considering it was just a compilation but I was sad when it got canned.

I used to know the employees at EB Games pretty well, one of them sold off his Gameboy Mega Man collection when he heard of the GBA collection coming out. He had all of the games, most were complete too. I don't think he got that much for them as he just traded them into another game store, I'm sure he was upset when the GBA game got cancelled.

I forgot about that but I'm also disappointed that it never got finished. To me it looked pretty good. SatAM did get a game if you count Sonic Spinball, the bonus pinball levels feature characters from the show. I really should watch the show again as it's been years since I've seen it.

I still have my copy of NINTENDO FUN CLUB NEWS Vol.1 No. 2 Summer 1987. On page 6 of the magazine they have a list of NES games under the header: NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM 1987 LICENSE PROGRAM. It is here SNK Corporation of America lists PSYCHO SOLDIER as one of the games coming out for the NES (available by Fall 1987). Alas, this game never came out and I had wanted it so dearly!! I used to play the arcade version at a carnival that came to my church every Summer. And it was AWESOME! An incredible Japanese side scroller featuring Athena Asamiya and Sie Kensou from King of the Fighters!! Man, I wish this game had come out on the NES. And no Famicom version exists either! But it was somewhat advanced and I think the SNES would've been a better candidate. Either way, I pray SNK will release it someday on a compilation disc for Wii, Xbox 360, or PS3!! Or hell, just give it to me on DSi!!

Ya know... I got to thinking... I have really bad luck when I bank on an interesting game thats in development and buy the system to play the specifirc title. The game always gets canned or unreleased.

I got a Sega Saturn specifically for Eternal Champions: The Final Chapter. EC: Challenge From the Darkside was amazing and I couldn't wait for the third installment.

I got a Dreamcast specifically for Geist or Geist Force. It looked like an incredible Panzer Dragoon meets Starfox game. Every weekend I would visit my local Software Etc. and drag my friends along to show them the demo footage they had running before the DC launched.

In the early days of the Wii, the only reason I wanted one was for the "Project Hammer" game. I though it just looked awesome, like a next gen beat em' up, and nothing ever came of it.

Then there is the unreleased Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen for the Saturn which is 100% complete but no one was willing to publish it. It was supposed to run much smoother and have no slowdown compared to the PSX version.

+1 for Shenmue III, Dead Phoenix, and Lufia for Genesis.
Western release of Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers for the Saturn (or PSOne, I like the Saturn better as a system but I'm not gonna get THAT picky when we're talking about the chance to play a game in English).
Duck Tales 3 - After making 2 games, you know they had to be thinking about it. Both games were excellent, too.

There's been one or two hints that PH has been quietly worked on at Nintendo and could be brought out for release if they really wanted to.. but I can't see it happening.

The composer of Sadness released some of its soundtrack on his blog. It was really good! I think it could have been the Wii's version of Eternal Darkness.

this will not fully qualify, but two games listed in the upcoming games section of the first issue of Nintendo Power magizine:

Chester Field
Empire City 1931

they are available in Japan on the Famicom, but never localized to the USA…
I had waited for these games, as well as Terra Cresta (which would be localized many years after it was announce in fall 1988)
I only recently learn several years ago that the above two titles were even in existance on a Nintendo hardware!

Yes, I remember seeing an advertisment for Chester Field in Nintendo Power. It was supposed to be a Vic Tokai release. I think the Famicom did receive this game. It is kind of a Zelda II clone. Very interesting. I was eagerly anticipating this game as well. I did pick up Terra Cresta back when it was released. I own it complete and cherrish it! Another arcade game I loved to play at my local laundry mat!
