View Full Version : Drastic decisions?

My newest phase has begun, last week I was staring at my wall of video games and I began to get very bothered by the lack on end label on my N64 games. It took me about a week of feeling uneasy looking at my games unable to shake that I was missing a real part of them.
Then something just snapped in me and then I suddenly felt the need to get to boxes for all of them because it was the only "authentic" way to organize them. Next I figured that if I was going to start getting boxes that I need the manuals too because whats a box without its manual? I might as well be going for completeness if I'm getting the boxes. Then I started to think of how strange my collection would look with only boxed n64 games on it. Since it's not very easy just to just get boxes and manuals and also being held back by a lack of money I figured "Hey, I hardly play these games anyway. I should just sell every one of them and rebuy the ones I really like with boxes and manuals." Now I've got a back account full of money and a empty game shelf.
So I'm pretty excited to rebuy my games and have them in there complete form. I haven't started yet because I'm still waiting on a few payments, but once I'm 100% done getting all my funds it's time to start fresh.
In my years and years of collecting I've never done anything as big as this. I've NEVER cared about boxes before, and I actually used to just toss them but just recently I feel like every game needs them.
Anyone else have any drastic mood swings while collecting?
I don't have amazingly drastic mood swings on changing what I have but I collect for a lot of systems and while I do grab a game or 2 for one of em pretty much whenever I get the chance at any one time I have an urge to add primarily saturn games or nes games or ps2 games. Dunno why but that's how it goes for me ;p

I'm dealing with the potential drastic decision of selling off my entire 1200+ game collection. I still love video games, but the physical ownership is becoming overwhelming and I'm thinking about just going the emulation route. Maybe just keep a few childhood favorites for the NES and Genesis. I don't know, I just picked up more games this past weekend!

... Or you could have just made end labels for your N64 games. (*says the guy who only collects boxed games*)

I did the same thing because, frankly, there's no point in owning games that I don't really care for. Last month I sold off about 80 N64 titles because there's only about 25 that I consider shining examples of the console. Now I need to scour my PS2 collection of some 300 titles for all the garbage JRPGs and stuff that I'll never play or even feel satisfied having sit on a shelf.
So yeah, I don't care about quantity but quality. Give me 10 CIB good games over 50 loose games that are mostly garbage.

I'm the same way, I routinely purge my collection of games that I don't like. I don't care about complete collections, I'd rather own the fun games.

I need to start clearing out what I have, I have a bunch of games that I never play. I usually buy bundles of games locally to get the games I'm looking for and that leaves me with a bunch of extras that I never use. They take up a lot of space.

I've just started selling off part of my 6000+ games to pursue some glaring holes (Ninja Gaiden Trilogy). Like those before me I'd rather have 1000-1200 playable games rather than junk like Spice World or anything starring MaryKate and Ashley.

I try to go back and get boxes and manuals for games I have lose... or re-buy them CIB and sell the lose copy.
But you can always make your own labels for N64 as many people do.

I'm in the process of getting all my NES games complete. All my other games are complete already. I would get rid of the loose carts. I keep mine as spares. I've actually been buying spares of games I already have, at least of the carts.

I'm considering doing this, heavily.

My drastic decision was to sell off more than half my PS1 collection. That was about a year and a half ago.
But I kept almost all the good games, phew!

Cardboard boxes weren't meant to be used for resuable game cases. They're just not built for the job, which I think you'll discover fairly quickly if there any games in your N64 collection that you play fairly regularly.
Should've got some sort of plastic case to store them all in. Would've been cheaper and far more durable (Not to mention a ton more convenient to get a game out and replace it when you're done). And with some custom artwork, you could've made it look great on your shelfs.

Which is what I do. I have all the boxes for my N64, SNES, and NES games. But they're all stored in plastic bins. Nintendo had some official plastic cases for N64 games. They hold the game and the manual nicely. They also have a little slot for memory cards. There are two problems though. You can't see what game they are from the spline. And they are hard to find anymore. When I come across them on eBay people want an quite a bit for them.
However, if you head over to The Cover Project (http://www.thecoverproject.net/) you can print out slip covers that are meant to fit in the universal game cases which N64, SNES, and NES games fit in nicely. They even fit Genesis, 32X and Jaguar games. This might be the route you want to go. Like I said before, I'm thinking about doing this for my N64, SNES, NES, 32X, and Jaguar games. I will probably do it for my Atari 2600-7800 as I buy them as well. I think getting them complete is a worthy goal, as I have all mine complete and I love it. However, as Leo said, storing them in the actual boxes is not a good idea unless you're merely displaying them. If you're getting them in and out, the boxes are going to wear out quickly.

Drastic gaming decisions? Selling off my entire 130+ NES library last year or so... just wasn't playing it and it was taking up too much space.
Also selling over 100+ Saturn games in 2006 that I no longer desired or planned to ever play again. That gave me a good $450 or so paypal balance to operate with ;)

I think this is a great idea. You can get 8x10 glossy labels at walmart that look fantastic for less than $3 apiece, far cheaper than you'd pay for game boxes.

Would you say this is similar to the paper that they originally used on Genesis games? I've been looking for something like that.

It's photo paper. High quality stuff. I use it to make case inserts for DVDs, although I have to use 11x14 prints for that. Even still, those are only $7 apiece. Prints at WalMart rock.

I'm assuming since you've used it for DVD slipcovers that it isn't really thick. I've been looking for something glossy but it's thick and I was looking for something a little close to the original slip covers.

You're talking about a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of an inch. They slide into DVD covers perfectly.

Yeah, I know I'm being picky. It's just that they selection of photo paper at Office Max was pretty thick. Thicker than the normal photo prints you would get from a developer. It wouldn't have worked at all since it was just too thick.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to get some of that. Also, what kind of printer are you printing yours on a laser or an ink jet?

The only "drastic decisions" I've had are whether or not I should just use Homebrew Channel for games instead of switching out systems constantly. I sided with the Wii on that one.

I've been content with carts without boxes/cases for years. If it is on CD, I want the orginal case/box.
So PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast games need to be in case while N64, Atari 2600-7800, are OK cart only.
Sega Genesis may be an exception. I like the boxes though I have settled for cart only half the time.
N64 boxes can often be found on ebay separatley from the games so I may dive into that.
The Cover Project seems a great solution for the older consoles. Loose carts are an eyesore on display.
