Why would it matter if they were legit or not? People still buy multicarts, hacks, bootlegs, and "reproductions". Do people not count those either in their collections?
I dunno. I meant that they would just repeat the same reasons they did earlier. You can touch all of those you mentioned... just not the electronic ones. *shrugs*

Using that logic, no one should count any games in a collection, since you could just as easily get a bootleg copy as an official retail copy.
In the end it comes down to how each of us do our own thing. I have a friend who counts things in his collection that I never would, like combo carts and variants, but it's cool. We acknowledge and respect our differences.

Go ahead, buy and collect them all. See if you care.

Actually it would be more like counting everything, whatever a person decides is a part of their collection.
Someone who collects movies or DVDs might count bootlegs of films that weren't officially released on any home format or were altered in some way for the official release. Stuff like the Star Wars Holiday Special or the uncut version of Daria: Is It College Yet? come to mind. It's whatever a person wants to collect, even if it has no monetary value at all. Sentimental value is what really counts for a collection, what makes an item have sentimental value is different for each person.

I'm starting to come around to this perspective. I still don't necessarily understand the need for an inventory of your downloads or why someone would buy 500+ games on Steam which is more than I have owned on the PC in my entire life despite the fact that I consider myself a pretty serious PC gamer/collector, but I also don't understand acheivements and trophies on the 360 and PS3, so I guess it's just a case of to each their own.

I'm not a fan of downloadable games and in fact, I can count the ones I've purchased on both hands (and all of those have been "paid for" with free gift cards or free d/l codes; nothing out of pocket). When games go completely download/authenticate only, I'm officially out for good. It won't be my loss however, as with my current physical collection, I'm not sure I could play every decent-to-excellent title I own before I died anyway. I'm currently "missing out" on current DL-only favorites, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest -- there's just too dang many good games that I can buy and actually own as it is. My physical game collection is a little ridiculous as it is -- there's no way I'd bother "collecting" something I can't physically possess, and I won't give anyone money for the displeasure, that's for sure.
And your total of $6000+ on Steam is amazing. I don't think I've spent that much on my entire collection! But like so many things in life, if it makes you happy, go for it.
