Hi everyone! I am looking for help finding a good controller for the Sega Genesis. I have the Original Genesis 3-button and 6-button Controllers, but I am looking for something with a very nice D-Pad, and doesnt feel Hollow.

Id like to find something that just feels more solid like a SNES Controller, and similar D-Pad

What do you guys Recommend?

I recall Interact made a SNES / Genesis pad that looked just like a SNES pad. I forgot the name of it though. :(

Amazing, someone who isn't satisfied with the quality of the official (non-turbo) 6-button controller's d-pad. Personally, beyond the Mk2 US/standard Japan Saturn pads, the 6 button Genesis controller is one of the best made in terms of shape and d-pad so I cannot help you.

KS - do you mean the SG ProgramPad6?

I think the ones they come with are pretty good. As far as the d-pad though not all controllers are the same. I have at least 6 3 button controllers and only one do I really like the d-pad. I swear to god they feel different.

The 6 button controllers that were packed in with the Genesis 3 had cheap d-pads. I don't think anybody likes them since they are bad for diagonals you can tell these controllers apart by the slow mode switch.

Everything about the Genesis 3 was cheap.

fahlim, nope! It was a variant of the SNES / Genesis ProPad that worked with both systems via an adaptor. I THINK. I might be thinking of another company. I had one stored somewhere but can't remember where I left it. It was just a pad, no LCD or anything.

I like the look of this one though:

I have that. The dpad doesn't feel good.

The official 6-button's dpad is as good as it gets.

I have a couple of MD "Tatsujins" and I really like the way they control. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah there are many variants of the 3 button controller.

Long cord, short cord,
white markings, red markings,
smooth d-pad & buttons, firm d-pad & buttons,
larger d-pad, smaller d-pad
flat plug, raised plug

And there are different combinations of each of these attributes.

Except the only red marking controllers I have seen come with long cord, flat plug, large d-pad, smooth d-pad & buttons.

From experience, the firm large d-pad and either of the small d-pad controllers are the easiest to use. The large smooth d-pads just feel slippery compared to the other three kinds. Try playing Ms. Pac-Man with Pac booster on and you'll see what I mean when you try to turn at a corner and it doesn't always work.

I have one of these and I thought it would be as good as first-run non-turbo official 6 button pads but the d-pad sticks sometimes when doing diagonals, which can be a pain in shooting games. Also, the A button gets stuck sometimes too but at least it's good for auto-fire.

I like this one much much more than than standard 3 button controller. That one feels too big and bulky for me.

The asciiPad SG-6? I have one of these but I can't remember how it played as I last used it years ago.

Yeah, I can't believe that either. Both pads are second only to the Japanese Saturn pad.

I have never had a problem with any button sticking. I can play Truxton and Lightning Force with ease. That asciiPad is a good one as well.:)

I find that this one has the best D-Pad out of all the Genesis controllers.

I have more Genesis controllers than I care to admit, and after years of collecting and trying them, I still haven't found any better than the original 3- and 6-button Sega offerings (not counting the pack-in Model 3 controller, which I don't care for).

The ascii-Pad has a quality feel to it, and to my thumb, the D-pad does seem slightly weightier, but the button layout and wide grips are just a mess, even if you're an SNES vet (although the SNES ascii-Pad is a gem). Several third-party controllers showed up with a similar SNES-style layout, but in my experience, it doesn't translate well to the Genesis. I don't know anyone who prefers their Y and Z buttons on the shoulders when there's plenty of room on the face.

Actually there exists a Megaverter converter that lets you use SNES pads on Genesis. I found one and gave it to SatoshiMatrix on these boards. He did a thorough checkout and seemed to like it pretty well. They are pretty hard to find though, I've only seen that one in my 13 or so years as a collector.
