I picked up a PS3 today, I was told that they were having problems with it saving. So I figured it was the hard drive, or something related, which worked for me, because I had one with non-working disc drive so I wanted to use the drive from this one in the one I had.

But, I can't get the new one to power on at all, and I'd like to make sure the drive works before I go through the hassle of swapping them.
I can't get the unit to power on, no lights, nothing.

So I need some guidance/advice on what could be wrong. I haven't opened it up yet, so I know nothing about the internals. Do I need any special tools to get inside? Is there a fuse that could be the problem?

To give an update to anyone who is interested. The system seems to be done.
I originally thought the problem was the power supply, so I put the suspect PS into a working unit, and it works just fine. So I went ahead and swapped the disc drives, at first, the new one wouldn't accept discs, but it just needed to be opened up and moved around inside. After getting it back into a working system, it recognizes music CDs, but won't read them. It doesn't recognize any other kind of disc.

So unless anyone has some more suggestions, this system will be headed for the parts box.

What model is it? The older phat models had problems with the gpu going bad and some problems with the motherboard also. I "had" an 80g 4 usb that was b/c and it died on me. After searching online and different repair shops it was unrepairable. So I got a slim that works great and traded in my dead one to Gamestop who gave me $75 store credit. Hope this helps. I know how you must feel. Good luck.

Did you see if the power board (the little board that connects to the motherboard, front right corner of system) worked in a different PS3? I once repaired a system that had one of those go bad. It's a very cheap part to replace.
