I came across a vendor in a flea market that had a few Japanese import games. There was a Sega Mega Drive CD jewel case with no disc inside, some kind of RPG. There was a Playstation game that was some kind of special edition, but I didn't have a modded Playstation to run it on, so I also passed. The third game he had was a Saturn title with a high-res music idol dancing around, not really a game but still interesting. I bought that one. A couple years later, I'm reading about rare import games in Retro Gamer magazine, and I realized how rare the Playstation game I had passed on was... Policenauts. Dammit.

Atari Star Wars Cockpit... w/ Empire conversion kit @ store I can't recall at the Mall of America... $400. I was 18 and between jobs, so no money. Though I did caress and drool on it a bit. Hey! It counts! Well, at least it's something. LOL
In hindsight though, it was a good thing I didn't have the means to buy it. I can't imagine being able to keep it when I moved to Texas. To have had it and be forced to part with it would be more painful than just missing out. So I guess it was a doomed find anyways. ;)

Biggest regret what I have is when I didn't buy Earthbound for SNES for 16€. I just had started collecting and was in video rental store which were selling their old games. I browsed through the gamess and looked at the box of Earthbound and thought that it looked kind of interesting game.. and then put the box back to shelf. Argh!
At least I bought Lord of the Rings (CIB), Super Metroid (L), Megaman X2 (with manual) and some others for 8€ each. But I still don't have Earthbound.

Most of my regrets have to do something with having no money. I've missed lots and lots of great deals just because my pockets were empty at the moment.
There's one that really bugs me, though, and that happened just about six months ago. I was at this flea market and was looking through the stuff, just checking if there's anything game related gems hidden somewhere. Very rarely there is, as the town I'm living in, is very small, and the flea markets or game stores are also small with small selections.
Well, this time I hit the jackpot! Under one of the tables, there was a worn cardboard box, and on it, there read "Children's clothes". Something made me open it, and was surprised as there were loads mint nes games in the box, neatly arranged to two layers (maybe ~80 games in all). There were all three Lolo games, Mega Man games 2,4 and 5, Mario Bros, both Zeldas and more.
I think I peed a little, just because I was happy. Like puppies sometimes do.
And the price? Oh, the whole box for just 30 euros (that's about $50).
I jumped up and raced to the nearest ATM, withddrew 40 euros and ran back just to see someone carrying that box out of the door with a big smile on his face. That's cool, I thought, trying to resist the urge to strangle that bastard. How on earth this could happen? It read "Children's clothes" and there would be no way someone could just open it and peek inside. Then I remembered that I'd left the friggin' box open when I left to the ATM. I'm so stupid. :D

Great thread. Now I don't feel so bad posting my story. :D
This was circa 1999, before I was collecting retro games or even knew that some old videogames could be rare. I walked into a kay-b toy store near my old house that was closing. Everything looked to be in shambles (toys on the ground, shelves dismantled, etc.) On a table near the cash registers I saw a few videogames. They had mega man six and battletoads clearanced to $7.00. Thats $7.00 for new, sealed copies. They also had a few strategy guides and snes sports games. What do I buy instead? Sim city for the p.c.
Oh well :D

This isn't me, but it's about a kid who went to a garage sale and picked up a SCPH-1001 because he thought it was worth $5000 instead of the 10 million model playstation (incredibly rare, actually worth a ton of money) that was sitting right next to it. (You have to login to assemblergames to see this, it starts on post #568)

I just missed out on a boxed copy of Nobunaga's Ambition 2 for the NES.
It looked really nice, but did not have the manual. (oddly enough, it did have the styrofoam piece)
The guy wanted $8 for it, and I was going to take it, but all I had left was a 100 dollar bill. I figured the guy would not have enough change for such a big bill, so I left. He should have had enough, but the heat was really getting to me and I was ready to leave. :(
I also missed a complete copy of Clock Tower 2 for the same reason, except the seller told me straight up about his change issue.

Just recently passed up on "Way of the Samurai 2" (PS2) for $13 at GameCrazy. I bought "Lunar Knights" (DS) instead, which I've always wanted anyways. But, I'm sure that Samurai will still be there if I go back...

I have a few,but the one that sticks out in my mind would be passing up a Vectrex at a toy convention back in the early 90's. IIRC, it had about 10 boxed games, the light pen & the 3-D imager. The guy wanted $110 and everything was in pristine shape.
I passed on it,though. Why,do you ask? Because he didn't have the Star Trek game as part of the package...

Well, not exactly a find, but close! I regret buying a $45 copy of Dragon Warrior IV. This crazy bitch I was dating also liked the game and took it with her after we broke up... Took the cat too.
:bad-words:
I would do anything for love...
But I won't do that :D
I found a limited edition pack of Metal Gear Solid 2 for PS2 at Best Buy and passed on it. I think it was on sale too.... I'm talking about the one that now sells on eBay for more than a bill most of the time.
:grrr:
Dumb move on my part, but I was in a lull with collectible gaming and didn't care. Now I wish I had pulled the trigger on that one....

Very unlikely unless it was in their used section. Also, the one that is valuable is MGS3 Subsistence Limited Edition, not MGS2.

Theres been a few things at EB back in the day like Intelligent Cube for $39(no wonder I passed on it), but the real kicker is 1999. I worked at Toys R Us for the holidays that year and I remember the $19.99-39.99 bins we had of classic Genesis and Snes games. I refused to buy them because I thought that was too much to pay for last gen games, not knowing that had I bought and kept them for 5 years I could have easily sold many for close to a C note. I'm talking Contra 3, Super Castlevania 4, Contra Hard Corps and a bunch of other good factory sealed 16-bit goodness. Ironically enough, I also passed on a sealed copy of Nights Into Dreams with special controller(at that same TRU) and it was on clearance too:(

Probably should've grabbed a copy of Melty Blood: Act Cadnenza(sp?) at a anime convention awhile back. Just for the fact that I wouldn't have to shell out for shipping.
A week ago there was an ebay auction for a Mother 3 gameboy micro. It was opened with only the system and bag, but I would've taken it just to have the system. The auction ended at $80+.

I took advantage of this very closeout, yet still passed on Contra Hard Corps. Actually for years I swore I had bought it, but it turns out I had bought Castlevania Bloodlines instead. Also, passing on all the 'greatest hits' FFVII's and Castlevania: SotN's.

Oh god, I've been trying to block these out of my mind for a while, but for me:
1. I was at Funcoland (the name should tell you how long ago it was), and I passed up a complete copy of Suikoden II for 35 bucks and bought Chrono Cross instead (same price). I mean, Chrono Cross was fun and all, but it's a s***bin $10 game now.
2. I looked at a complete preowned copy of Intelligent Qube at EB for 39 bucks and passed. As soon as I put it down someone bought it!
Those two still kill me, to this day.

Ouch, I guess I can't relate to people on the Intelligent Qube one. Never even knew it was rare, I just liked it from the demo a long time ago and only paid $15 for my copy not more than six months ago.

I bought two copies of Castlevania: Bloodlines at another Toys R Us but they were marked at $1.00 each. My store never clearanced any of the games that low except for Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of The Jedi for $5.00 each(I bought both). As for Castlevania: SotN, I was lucky enough to find 5 greatest hits copies at Sears(shows how long ago it was) for 99 cents each. Talk about your great finds8-)

Mega Man 8 for Playstation, complete, no scratches for 99 cents at Salvation Army. As an avid Mega Man fan with all of the games in the original series except for the 8th installment, I don't know what I was thinking. Well, I do but it's still inexcusable. I didn't have a Playstation at the time and thought I would just pick it up when I eventually get one. Well I bought a PS1 randomly the very next day and a PS2 2 days after that. I then remembered! I immediately went back to the Salvation Army but it was gone. I know it's a common game but there really was no reason not to get it and complete the series.
Also a few days ago 30$ for a complete in Box Atari Jaguar with a couple of games. Unfortunately, I am totally broke right now and couldn't do it. I don't really know anything about Jaguar, just that it is a more uncommon system. I certainly don't see any around here. For those who do know, was that a good deal?

A few years ago there was this new chain of video game stores that were selling sealed copies of Eternal Darkness for $6.99 each. The funny thing is that I kept telling myself I was going to get one the next time I went there, but I never did. Now those suckers are going for around $20 used so I can only imagine what new copies go for.

My regret is not buying a cart only copy of Klonoa: Empire of Dreams the first time that I saw it. I actually tested it out a used game shop, but I didn't get because A) I was hoping to find a boxed copy, and B) at that time I didn't realize how hard it was to find in the wild. So, for about a year afterwards I was kicking myself for passing it up.
I finally snagged a copy this past August, during a birthday shopping spree. I went into an EB games store, not expecting to find much. But when I looked in the case of GBA stuff, there was cart only copy of Klonoa! Talk about a great birthday gift! :-D

It's not an "in the wild" find, but I recently missed the chance to get Gunbird 2 (DC) off of Amazon for $10.94 after shipping. I should have jumped on it as soon as I saw it, but I got up to do something else and when I came back, it was gone, leaving me to hope I'll find a better deal on it in the wild someday.

A few years ago I was in a pawn shop and saw they had SMT Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga for $10 apiece. I didn't have any money at all at the time. (Both were selling on Ebay for around $60+ each.)
Back when the Dreamcast came out the local import game shop I used to go to sold off all their old inventory half price. They had US Panzer Dragoon Saga for $40, Lunar 1 & 2 for Sega CD for $10 each and a whole host of other games, but I didn't know about the sale til it was over. :(

maybe 10 years ago I was in a Pawn Shop and I found a copy of the Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge.
Oh yeah.
But back then, when I knew very little about video games and already owned a copy of the regular Donkey Kong Country, I just left it there.
I figured it was some kind of 2 player game that let you play against your friends. I never figured it was.... that....

I once found most of the King's Quest series (floppy releases), boxed with manuals, in excellent conditon at a local thrift. I was about 10 at the time, and seeing as I had owned the original collector's compilation since I was 6, I couldn't pesuade my mom to let me borrow some cash. Still bothers me to this day.

My worst mistake ever and I get mad at myself just thinking about it. I was working at a game store and someone traded in all four Dragon Warriors complete/mint in box. I bought them for $15-$25 a piece with my discount. My bills came due and the guy I was dating knew one of my customers was willing to purchase them for $50 a piece, so I sold them. It was still a good deal for the first Dragon Warrior but not for the rest of them. Did I mention the guy I was dating didn't have a job so he didn't mind me selling off my stuff.

I've had some along my journeys, so I'll share a few of them here.
The first one was sometime in 2002; shortly after my grandmother bought a Sega Genesis. I went to a garage sale and saw a minty-fresh, complete-in-box copy of Alex Kidd in The Enchanted Castle for the Sega Genesis for only $1. I was wanting to buy it simply because the pics on the back of the box somehow made me think this was going to be like EarthBound...but unfortunately, my sister talked me out of it because she saw it as being worthless (Like any video game stuff that wasn't modern at that time) and didn't want me to waste my money on it. I didn't know until it was too late, but I found out looking around on eBay a few hours later that it was selling for upwards of $50, so even if it sucked, I could have made a nice profit if I sold it.
--
Another one was further back in time; circa 2001. I went to a sale, and saw a massive Commodore 64 collection for sale for only $25. I clearly remember it was complete in box with the tape deck, the floppy drive, and the dot matrix printer also complete in box, plus a case full of software for it. Unfortunately, not only did I not have $25 on me, but I also wasn't interested in getting a computer that wasn't IBM compatible at the time.
--
I still consider my worst offender to be the Sega 32X. Only a year after the Game-X-Change I frequently go to opened (This was in 2005), they had one in with all the cables for only $20. However, I passed it up because they didn't have a copy of Knuckles' Chaotix in. A year later, I obtained a copy of the game I wanted, but now I can't find the 32X anywhere; they got some in shortly after I bought Knuckles' Chaotix, but because they where missing the cables, they couldn't sell them.
After months, the store manager decided to sell one of them to me at a discount because it was wasting space in the back room and I knew where I could get replacement cables so I could actually use it...unfortunately, the bitch of an assistant manager threw them away a few days ago without authorization. Though I haven't found a 32X at a reasonable price since then, they did fire that assistant manager, thankfully.

The guy I used to buy japanese arcade machines offered it to me, but I passed because I was more interested in traditional cabinets at the time.
Also regret not pre-ordering/buying radiant silvergun when it was first announced. Despite pre-ordering/buying lots of other import saturn games at the time. I was thinking, oh I'll pick it up eventually. Same with Taromaru... could have saved a "few bucks". lol

At one time I had seen a listing on eBay where a person had a few copies of Dreamcast Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 for $12 Buy it Now. I was interested in buying and wanted to show my parents but I ended up forgetting about it. Years later I'm still fucking pissed that I didn't buy it, and I still don't have the game. Bought Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 TWICE from a video game store, it was the same dumb copy twice that didn't work. Something was wrong with it, it didn't even play demos of the gameplay or the gameplay, just white screen. I paid $50 twice and ended up returning it twice. :/ Some idiot put it back up on the shelf behind the counter. Now I have this CD-R that my friend burned for my that still annoys the shit out of me because it isn't official.

Not far from my house, we have a massive flea market called the Hometown Farmers Market. It's about 15% fruits and veggies, 10% meats, 50% bootleg merchandise (toys, clothes, video games, movies, music) and 25% miscellaneous items sold by people who rent a spot for a week or two. It's truly an awesome place.
I was about 15 or 16 years old when I moved back to Pennsylvania from Florida. On my first week back, my grandmother and I went to the Farmer's Market. I had five bucks in my pocket.
In this trip, I came across the NES demo unit. I believe it was from Sears. It was a large gray box, about the size of an early 80s VCR, that was built to have a television set on top of it. The front of the unit that stuck out (even with the edge of the tv at an angle) had buttons on it from which you could select a game to test. I remember one of them was Ice Climber. I want to say there were 8 games total, but I could be wrong. There were no cartridges; the games were programmed into the box itself. I don't remember, but I think the controllers were hard wired.
The guy wanted $20 bucks for it, and he was anxious to get rid of it. I BEGGED my grandmother for $15 until we got home (I had the money back at her house). She said no. It wasn't the money; she would have happily given me $15 for a pair of shoes or something, but she was convinced that the NES demo unit had sit in a garage somewhere and was full of ants (her exact words).
Needless to say, I've never found another, and I'm sure it'd probably be over $20 if I did.

Nice thread :)
I've passed up so many things over the years I've lost track of it all. Anymore I get this feeling in my gut when I pass over an item. I can tell that when I do pass, it'll be several years before I see it again or command a higher price point.
There is one instance that sticks out in my mind ever so clearly. Several years back I wandered into my local Babbages. I had only enough money on me to purchase one game and they still stocked TG16 games at the time. I had narrowed it down to two games, Neutopia II and Magical Chase.
Long story short, I ended going home with Neutopia II and when I came back, the Magical Chase was sold.
This of course catapulted Magical Chase to the top of my Holy Grail list and it's resided there ever since. I did manage to acquire a JPN Magical Chase a few years later but I've always still yearned for the domestic release of the game CIB.

One I remember from many years ago that I didin't mention in my last post:
I went to a garage sale back in 2002, and saw an Atari XEGS (Just the system from what I could remember; there may have been games and controllers in a box under the table). Without even doing so much as asking the price, I passed it up because I didn't know what it was. I never figured out what it was until a week ago; seeing a picture of one online, and realizing what I had passed up all those years ago.

Now I have this CD-R that my friend burned for my that still annoys the shit out of me because it isn't official.
Something like this happened to me but with SoulCalibur. Bought the game complete at a pawn shop for $5 and it didn't work. I kept the game, grabbed the iso from the net and called it a day.
As far as regrets go I really regret trading quite a few of my SNES games for a PlayStation back then. And the games were no slouchs, we are talking about Demon's Crest, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Final Fight 2, Final Fight 3, Turn and Burn, Scooby Doo, Stunt Race FX, Sim City, Out of this World, Turrican, International Super Star Soccer (not Deluxe), all boxed and complete, even with the Nintendo Power phamplets, posters and whatnot for a barebones modded PS1 and a bunch of pirated games.
Eventually I got all of them back, some complete and some loose but I'm willing to try and complete all of them again. The one I regret the most is ISSS. It is rare even in Mexico and haven't spot any other copy in 5 years so the odds of finding a complete copy are nearly zero.
As for passing deals up it usually was because I didn't have enough money with me at the time but one of the things I recall very well is when I left a Game Gear complete with carrying case, TV tuner, Game Genie and a bunch of games for 100 pesos (about 8 dollars). I had already spent the 150 pesos I brought that day on a Turbografx-16 (loose) and a few SNES carts. There was an ATM nearby, about 5 minutes away, but I just shrugged off and made the decision to get it next week. Of course, next week comes and the guy isn't there and nobody knows about him. Turns out that that area of the flea market is for occacional sellers. I never got to see him again.

I passed up on a complete in box Gold NWC 1990 at the flea market for $5 3 years ago. I just figured it was a shitty pirate :(
I had a chance to buy the NES Garage Cart when it first came out, but passed because I was short on money and felt that the games probably sucked (which I still believe to this day to be true). However, apparently they fetch some nice money now, and I wish I had one to sell.
Oh also remember seeing a NES with box (I guess it was complete) at a yard sale several years back (maybe 7 years ago) for $10. I felt it was a little pricey, and am the type that does not like to bargin, so I left it sit but now wish I would have grabbed it.

for me would be a super nes system and a bunch of games. I was about 13 and went with my dad to an estate sale at a trailer park. It was late in the day and there was barely any shoppers. We wandered around and found underneath a table in the bedroom a snes system and games all piled into a big box. I would say maybe 20-25 games. My dad said , that thing is a piece of junk lets get out of here. He would not lend me the money to buy it. I still bug him about it today. I could not even tell you one game that was there,at the time i knew very little about gaming and titles did not mean much to me. I am going to say there were asking for like $20, and it was after 1pm so it would have been half off.

Wow I've got nothing even close to some of your stories. I think the worst I passed up was a TI-99/4a with the PEB for $20 at a Salvation Army once (gone when I went back for it). IIRC I also lost out on a $60 Lochjaw on ebay about circa 1998 as I thought it was too much money. :(
I also passed up a TRS-80 model 4 once, but I'd hardly call that a loss... ;)

I missed out on buying up a game stores Turbografx games as they were closing down. The owner had about 70-80 Turbo games.

Im not sure how rare the Nintendo Virtual Boy is, but i saw one in the original box (although not sure if it was actually complete) for $45 at a flea market. I bet it's still there, but I havent been back to look for it...

Five dollar complete Gamecube.
Not so bad since I bought and BannerBombed a Wii, then got a five dollar Wavebird.

Gamestop near me had Valkyrie profile in quite nice condition for $60. I immediately went home to pick up $20 more, came back and it was already sold. :(

Ouch. How long ago was it, and where was it for sale?
That would have not only been a score, but an investment.

Soul Blazer - boxed, $10
I'm kicking myself now because I want to play it and everyone I've spoken to so far has asked $30 for a loose copy. :bad-words:

Not game related, but when I was garage saling last year, I came across a box of about 30 LaserDiscs. They were only a buck a piece, but instead of buying the whole box, I picked up a Reel to Reel Tape player. I kick myself everyday, since I am a huge LaserDisc fan now and never use my RtR tape player.

A pile of Earthbounds (at least 10) at a Walmart in Farmington, NM for $5 each. I only bought one to play. This was before we had internet--no way to know they were worth something. :(

this past year when i was on vacation, i saw the Pink Panther (ps1) game at a flea market for ten dollars. i laughed at it, and thought about buying only because i love the pink panther cartoon, and while the game is most likely bad, it would be funny to own. when i got home from my trip i looked it up on ebay and found out it was a valuable game. its too bad im now 300 miles away from that flea market.
