I'll tell you something I regret (not a pass up.) I sold a cart only 4.5/5 condition NES Panic Restaurant for $32 or $33 shipped. I swear it seems like a couple weeks later, cart only (whatever teh condition) was going for like $75-80 bucks :/

p.s. I wish now I would have held onto it. I remember it being a fun game.

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125817 < Just dug this up. Laughable.

Thankfully I don't have much of any regrets about things I passed on in the wild.

But there are several things I didn't buy in normal retail stores that I still haven't made up for. Back when GameStop was selling used NES/SNES/Genesis/etc. carts in the early half of this decade, I loaded up on a bunch of stuff, but I passed on some of the more expensive games. I really wish I had bought Earthbound, which was about $25, but I figured I could get two or three cheaper SNES RPGs or adventure games at that price (so instead I got stuff like Illusion of Gaia and Arcana). They also had several Genesis RPGs for $10 a pop, even multiple copies of some. I picked up a Shining Force 2, as did my fiance's brother, but I wish I had bought even more copies of that game (I know there was at least one or two more). I also didn't buy any of the multiple copies of Phantasy Star 2 and 4 since I already played 2 and didn't like it, and I figured I wouldn't like 4 either. Now I wish I had at least bought PS4.

Going a bit farther back, I loaded up on lots of PlayStation RPGs when the system was still alive, both new and used, but I regret not buying a used Tales of Destiny for 20-25 bucks. When I bought used, I tried to also spend less than $20, preferably under $15. So instead of Tales of Destiny, I think I bought Wild Arms and Brave Fencer Musashi, but I wish I got all three. At least I got a brand new Tales of Destiny II priced at $20 but free for me with an Amazon gift certificate I got for winning Review of the Week on GameFAQs years ago.

I think I actually passed on a Net version of Daytona for the Saturn, the $300 variant. I had just heard about this variant and looking at the pictures I wasn't 100% sure if this was a complete variant. I still should have grabbed it though.

My biggest regret, and this is a big one, was passing up Keio Flying Squadron for Sega CD.
I liked shoot-em-ups a lot back then, but didn't buy Keio at release because it was $54.99 +tax, and I didn't care for the cute-em-up graphics style.

At the end of the SegaCD life-cycle all the stores were clearing games for $10-20 brand new.
One copy of Keio Flying Squadron sat in the bargain bin at a local Babbages store for over a year. It was priced at $14.99 but I was waiting for it to go down to $9.99.

I picked up that copy of Keio probably a dozen times and contemplated buying it. BUt I just wouldn't spend $15 when I knew it would be $10 at some point ...and I'd convinced myself no one else in my city was buying Sega CD games anymore.

The day that I finally decide I'll spend the $15, the game is no longer there. Someone else bought it, after 1.5-2 years of sitting in that bargain bin.

I do regret passing up quite a few overpriced deals. I mean, even if the price is higher than average, there's no guarantee you'll ever see it again.

Almost the same exact thing happened to me with Mega Man X2 and X3. A friend of mine and I were eying the two copies at a local Blockbuster when we were kids for $10 each. We loved Mega Man X1, but didn't have the money at the time. When we finally got the money together a couple days later, they were gone. I haven't seen a copy of either since :(

I picked up a copy of Keio recently from an auction. Original price sticker on it? $9.99...you don't happen to live near Indiana, do you? :)

An old walmart back in 2003 had 6 copies of where in time is carmen san diego sealed for 5 bucks. I went to get them and bam they were all gone. Also had a sega game gear there for 10 bucks brand new and i missed that one as well. Found stadium events at a flee market for 15 bucks and passed that one up. The local K-Mart in the town that I used to live in back in 2004 had what seemed like dozens of FFVII's (greatest-hits version) for only $14.99 apiece. They also had quite a few copies of ICO (PS2) for only $19.99 each! I did buy one of those...but I wish that I had the foresight to grab the rest then :(

Bubble Bobble 2 - $10

I had just gotten into NES collecting and I was thinking the game was kind of rare, but when the guy at my local game store (who was usually quite good when it came to rarity) said it wasn't really worth that much, I picked up Ninja Gaiden instead since I had fond memories of that game. In hindsight... yeah.

In my pre-collecting years, I began closely following previews of, of all possible things, NCAA College Hoops 2K3 for Gamecube. I was distraught when the release date came and went and I couldn't find a copy of it. A couple of months later, I was at the Mall of America and happened upon a store that must have had a couple dozen copies of it. I bought one out of excitement, played it for a while, and ultimately traded it in some time later.

Had I known what the game was worth at any point during that whole thing, I would at the very least still have a copy of it, if not several. On the bright side, it hasn't appreciated in value as much as it simply hasn't depreciated, but still...quite a bummer.

I can't think of anything too major besides "hindsight is 20/20" situations-- i.e. the millions of new Final Fantasy VII copies that were everywhere up until about 2005. Funny how the most common game in the world now costs way too much. Also, a blockbuster near me had a decent stock of Castlevania SOTN new for $9.99 up until about 2005.

I've tried to "predict" when games will get rare in light of these misses, but usually fail. Unless it's something super obvious, like Metal Gear and Final Fantasy games go up in value when sequels are released.

I keep reading about how Harvest Moon for the SNES is supposed to be rare. I saw one in a thrift store, probably in the early part of this year. But I've never had any desire to collect or play games for the SNES, so I didn't bother with them. I just remembered it because my sister loves Harvest Moon for the GameCube, and I thought it would be nice for her to see where the franchise started at. But I didn't bother. In the past few months I've bought a mini-SNES and started picking up dirt cheap games whenever I come across them in the wild. I'm beginning to learn which games are rare, and that one sticks out for me. Dang, I wish I had picked it up.

I have a few...

I never have really been in the position to pass up games where I knew I was getting a steal. I guess my biggest d'oh would be the SNES Exertainment Mountain Bike Rally/Speed Racer game, with the bike. I didn't have a job or money, the unit was damn expensive, but I tested it out at a Future Shop (when they used to have stores in the states, I live in Montana). So I can say I actually played that game on the bike - but had I known how rare the whole thing would be I'd have begged my parents to no end. I remember the game sucking though.

I also bought a Virtual Boy at Shopko for $19.99 when they were liquidating them. When my parents caught me playing one, they demanded I return it. They thought it would lead to certain health problems. So back it went.

I remember a local Toy's r Us was still selling the Genesis 3 unit boxed up until 2000ish. It sat on the shelf forever. It was $19.99 as well. I contemplated it, but I was too mesmerized with my Dreamcast obsession at the time.

Lastly, I was a Saturn gamer and held out for the longest time as games were liquidated left and right. I didn't have a job at age 16, but I really wanted all those last Saturn releases. Unfortunately, all I really ended up with was Winter Heat (great game though). But I could have sprung for Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, House of the Dead, Magic Knight Rayearth...Problem was I was mostly into sports games, so I didn't care as much.

Well i bought several games from my old friend for few euros years ago and then in one day i sold them for really cheap price. Some of em were rare and they were in mint condition, and the games were Secret of Mana, Super Castlevania IV, Suikoden 2, Super Bomberman 2, Final Fantasy 2.

But yeah i bought most of back from ebay and they didn't have the manuals or covers, so i really regret my decision when i sold those games for a really cheap price :(

I screwed up about 5 (?) years ago, when Gamestop or EB or whatever the hell they were called then, was selling all their Genesis, SNES, etc. I had bought a few things, like Ogre Battle (SNES) complete for like $4, which I sold (dumbass) on eBay for a lot of money. But, the true screw-up was that I did not just pull out my credit card and buy everything in the two bins... there were a ton of complete games, in perfect condition, that were cheap as all hell. To this day I still wish I could go back in time and not be a cheap-ass... There were hundreds of awesome, some somewhat rare (I picked up a CIB SNES Zero: The Kamikazee Squirrel for $2.99 or something crazy.. I'd have to check the price tag, which I never removed from the box) games just sitting their waiting for a good home.

World of Warcraft Collectors Edition. Last copy in store ... believe it was roughly $100 if I remember correctly. Was not into oniline games or collector's editions at the time but still remember contemplating the purchase for quite awhile.

Not directly on topic, but remember taking part in one of the contests for the Elemental Gearbolt gold plated Assassin guns at a trade show. Believe I got the second best score. First place won. So close, but yet so far.

Pioneer Laseractive with PC Engine module, Mega Drive module AND about 30 games between the four systems (MD, Mega CD, PCE and PCE-CD). I think there were a few LD games as well. It was about $300 at a Hard-Off in Japan. I passed it up because, although it was a great deal... it is a HUGE package that weighs a lot and I already have a MD w/Mega CD and PC Engine Duo. I would've just bought it to sell it. That could have worked, except that this was about two weeks before I left Japan and was way to busy getting everything together to worry about shipping a very large Laseractive lot.

You guys are probably going to kick me out of this site for this one.

At the flea market 2 weeks ago I came across 9 Six Switchers in a bin with about 4 gamecubes, 2 PS1s, 2 Dreamcasts, and a Saturn.

Everything in the bin 3$ each.

....

I bought the saturn and the dreamcast :bawling:
I had money... why didn't I buy the the Six Switchers... 9 of them for $27 and I bet i could have gotten them all for $20.

I also bought 3 2600 controllers and the guy just handed me 2 Bally controllers for free.

Their was something wrong with this guy.

at the flea market in Gloucester, VA, I passed up on a $20 complete sega saturn for some crazy reason. I had the cash and everything, I just didn't take it. Around fifteen minutes later I changed my mind and went back and of course, it was gone. :frustrated: Currently it is the only hardware I am after. FML.

I've been reading through these stories, and wow. There's a lot of heartache here.

There seems to be a rule - if you're the idiot that passes it up, someone is going to buy it. Guaranteed. Though, I beat this rule ONCE. I must have been 15 years old, and I saw a FACTORY SEALED Final Fantasy for $25 once. I passed it up, because it was $25. I got home, and I realized what an IDIOT I was, and had my mom drive me right back to the store. They still had it, and I bought it. Then, I sold it on eBay for $300, and spent all the money on the original launch of the GameBoy Advance. Then, I hardly played the damn thing, and now it's basically worthless. Whee-hee!

I didn't pass up any specific deals, but there was a place in Jacksonville NC called Thieves Market my parents brought me to when I was younger and we'd go there maybe once a month. I was probably around 14 or so.

Thieves Market was huge. It had a store on one side then a warehouse on the other with even more stuff. The warehouse was full of clothes, movies, half of it was a bunch of electronic appliances, even had a box of various video game magazines for $.25 each which my parents picked those up for me. The other part of the store had a sort of antique appliance and books on one side with clothes on the other and in the very back corner was a large shelf with video games and then a glass panel over it.

The bad thing about this is my parents would buy me anything I want except for video games, and that's really all I cared about. So I would maybe get to buy a game once a month and rarely and it was like once a year for a brand new.

Now the video game section was amazing. It had NES, SNES, Gameboy, and Genesis. At the time I didn't really know about other systems so if there were others there I don't remember. But there were the most NES games. Games that are expensive now would appear there all the time. NES, GB, and Gamegear were $5 each and SNES games were $10 each. Some of these I owned so I didn't get my parents to pick them up(since I only had a choice of one game) others I saw but I chose something else. Final Fantasy Legend(I remember this one had the box,) Secret of Mana, the FF series, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, and complete Earthbound(I remember this one had a sticker on it of $20.) Those are the most notable ones, me being an RPG fan.

Now the thing I regret. After awhile we stopped going there, or atleast my parents stopped asking me if I wanted to go. Around when I got in high school. After I got a job though I never asked my parents about the place. I really should have, because if it was still as much of a video game gold mine as when I went there when I was younger then I could tell you all the money I got would have been going into cleaning that place out on a weekly basis.

I live in Florida now. Moved from NC when I was 18. I wonder if the place is even still there.

*edit*

I Googled Thieves Market and came up with a lot of hits from stores in different areas. Maybe it's still around.

Several years back I was at FYE and they were selling sealed GBA games. One that caught my eye was Castlevania: Circle of The Moon. It was either priced $19.99 or $14.99 and I thought that it should have been priced $9.99 so I passed on it. If only I would have known then what that game can go for sealed now. I should have just picked it up but I didn't and now I'll probably never get it for that price again.

Just remembered something else. Back in '99 I worked overnight as a stocker at Toys R Us during the holidays. They still had bins of Snes and Genesis games. The more noteworthy titles like Contra 3 and Super Castlevania IV were still marked at $30 each so I passed on them. I should have picked them all up since I could have sold them for triple that just a few short years later. The only decent priced games for the Snes were the Super Star Wars series(all for $5 each) and Contra: Hard Corps for the Genesis($1.99 each). I snatched those up and was waiting for the rest to go down in price but they never did. I don't know where they ended up because I'm pretty sure they didn't sell at that price, atleast not during the holiday season when I was there.

I passed on an NES Classic Edition GBA SP. It was at FYE for about $80.00, and I'd looked at it all the time, every week I was in the mall that it was in. It was quite a few years ago, I believe it was the year after it was released. I passed on it because I already had one, but I really wish that I would have bought it, because the one that I have has a little bit of wear on it, now, and it was also a gift. I would have kept the original gift one as a collectible and just played the other one. Or kept both stored away and just used my original onyx GBA SP.

The funny thing is that when I decided to just get the darn thing, the store actually had actually closed down!

It's not the most sought after item or anything, but it really bothers me that I didn't purchase it when I had the chance.

My wife actually pushes me to purchase games that I'm on the fence about when she knows that it's something that I'll really want, but I'm being cheap about it.

She pushed me to purchase my PC Engine Duo-R system. It was about $255.00 and came with 3 6-button controllers, an Arcade Card, a Memory Bank card, about 12 games that I actually cared about, a few more than I didn't really care that much about, a power converter, and about 40 CD-r copied TGCD games (mostly of the rarer ones, like Sapphire and Rondo of Blood) with custom made cases inserts.

She also convinced to me purchase a lot of Saturn import games, for about $140.00. It contained Radiant Silvergun, Dracula X, Vampire Savior, and a few decent others titles I don't remember right off. It may have been scooped up moments later is I hadn't. It worked out to around $30 or so a game, including the shipping.

I remember when I was 8 years old. My dad worked for Panasonic and was a manager of the US 3DO stuff.

I had about 2 or 3 of each variation of the console, including A PROTOTYPE VERSION which we only had one of. We also had 5 or 6 big boxes stuffed with factory sealed games. Every single game released, or that was planned to be released and never was resided in those boxes. :fist:

He asked me if I wanted any of them since he got to keep everything when he left panasonic, but I was young and dumb.

HE THREW THEM OUT.
EVERYTHING.

If anyone. ANYONE can beat giving up a complete 3DO collection. With about 20 or 30 consoles, a prototype console, and prototype games. FOR FREE.

Here's a few more of mine from recent memory:

Back in summer 2008, when Gamestop was running their Game Days sale, one of the games that they had available was Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES, which had been out for a month or two at that point, for the low price of $15. I had heard a lot of good things about the original version, and one of the employees (Who knew I liked RPGs) recommended it to me...but I wasn't sure if I'd really like it. As the sale drew to a close and they offered even deeper discounts on remaining games, I decided to finally pick it up...only to find that they where now sold out.

After years of wanting to try it, and finally having the money to do so, I splurged and bought it used for $30 when I stumbled onto a copy at the very same Gamestop in late 2010. It would have been nice to get it for $15 (During the last few days of that sale, it would have been roughly $10), but I feel it was worth every penny I paid to get it.

This one actually wasn't too long ago as of writing this. Shortly after getting a free Sega Master System and getting it working, I was looking into finally getting a copy of Phantasy Star, as well as checking the pricing on the other 3 games in the original series. While looking, I found a copy of Phantasy Star II for $10 on Amazon Marketplace; complete in box with the map and Hint Book (Which everybody seems to lose those two items), with the only flaw the seller described was that there was some writing in pencil on the map, in the instructions, and in the hint book. However, I decided to put it off getting it until I got my next paycheck, which was less than a week away; though I had enough money to buy it right then, I decided it was better to wait a few days to order it than to jump on it now and find myself needing that money for something more important a few days later.

Thus, once payday came around, I went back on to see if it was still available. Sadly, it was already gone by then; the next cheapest copy equally as complete is $40.

I passed up buying Panzer Dragoon Saga when Toys R' Us was clearing them out for $20. I already had the game and had no idea where I could sell it, since ebay wasn't around back then.

I passed up on a Sega CDX and X'Eye selling at Best Buy for $30 each. I'd just recently (at the time) sold my Sega CD and games collection to buy Saturn games.

I can't say I've passed on anything that I should have picked up (or that I regreted for very long)...except a Space Invaders arcade cabinet. The monitor didn't work and it was $100, but I still wish I had grabbed it.

Back then between 1999-2002, my local Toys R Us was getting rid of so much awesome merchandise for "real low cheap."

Stuff I regret not buying: (not that I could have bought any of it anyways. :?)

1. Sega Model 2 - $20 (I ended-up getting one, but I should've gotten many more)
2. Sega Model 3 - $20 (I also got one, but I should've bought more)
3. Sega Nomad - $50
4. Sega CDX - $100
5. Sega Saturn - $50
6. Sega Dreamcast Maracas - $10 (I got one, but should've bought more)
7. Sega Dreamcast Seaman - $10 (also got one, should've bought more)

Later on, on eBay and other sites, lots of sealed Nomads went for $50-100. I regret not having purchased one of them.

They were also getting rid of lots of cardboard boxed Castlevania Bloodlines for $5 each. I did get one that I still have sealed (worth around $50 now), but I know I should've gotten more also. This is because in 2008, I ended-up having to sell a lot of my merchandise, and the first stuff that went were my Samba de Amigo maracas (which I got from Sears), the game, Seaman and a sealed DC racing wheel (all from Sears). I could've spared me the trouble. I should've known. :( Now I know I must get them back, but they won't be very "sealed" anymore.

Not quite as bad as some of the items passed up here, but I remember a local used book store here had a boxed Pokemon edition Gameboy Color with the Yellow Pikachu Pokemon game as the pack in for $50.

I like collecting import Saturn games and it seemed like there was always one or two Tec Toy Saturn titles listed...until I went to buy one@_@

Sooner or later!

I didn't pass on some recent Samsung Saturn games though;)

Firefighter F.D.18 - $5 used from a rental store.

Guitaroo Man - $5 they had one copy at my Circuit City during the 5 dollar clearance sale back in the summer of 2004, I didn't know how much it was worth back then and didn't realize that it would have been worth checking out even if it wasen't worth so much.

Mega Man X - Saw this at Walmart on clearance for $5, I would have grabbed this for sure if I didn't still own my copy I bought from when it came out.

About a year or so back, a found a Craigslist ad with a bunch of Sega systems and games for sale. I skimmed through the ad, and noticed there were quite a few rare games listed. So I sent the seller an email asking how much he wanted for the following items:

Sega Saturn System

Saturn Memory Card

Magic Knight Rayearth

Albert Oddysey

Nights into Dreams

Popful Mail

He sent back an email saying he would take $80.00 for them! Now, I knew that this was an excellent deal. However, since I was on a tight budget, there was no way I could scrape up cash for it all.

In the end, the only game I bought from him was Popful Mail for $15.00. The seller didn't seem have any idea what his stuff was worth. He apparently inherited it all from his uncle. But since he didn't play games, and his kids weren't interested in "old games" he sold it all off.

One extreme example comes to mind:

When the FuncoLand by my house was closing it's doors in 2003, they were selling a large amount of sealed Saturn/PS1/N64 games for real cheap. Turns out there was a lone copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga, new and still in shrink-wrap, for $24.99, and i didn't buy it..... I cried a few years later when I saw people on ebay selling it in that condition for $500-$600.... :shameful:

Probably the Suikoden IIs I saw a few years ago for $30 or the Dragon Ball GT Final Bout for $80 back before the reprint. More recently I passed up a CDI zelda game (forgot which one) for $2
