Just got a Sega CDX with Sonic CD, and I was wondering, just how rare is it? I know I've never seen one in the wild, but I can't find any sales numbers.
While I'm at it, how about the Nomad?

This is what the rarity guide is for:

CDX is given a 5; Nomad is given a 3.

CDX systems are not all that rare. But the correct power supply is! A frequent topic of discussion on this site, so don't be misled by its low price if/when found. Easily identified and there is no Sega-brand alternative.

I just picked up my own two days ago! I really like this little console and is a huge improvement space wise over my model 1, SegaCD 2, and 32x setup. I also think it loads faster then my Model 2 Sega CD but I have no hard data to prove that.
I wouldn't say its rare since their are always a few selling on amazon and ebay but they do seem to be uncommon. I haven't seen one personally for sale and they seem to hold their price pretty well.
The power supplies are so rare that you are unlikely to run into one unless it is sold with the system. However I found that the Sima SUP-60 and SUP-60M should provide the same voltage as the original supply, will post up once they come in.

I'd forgotten about the power supply issue, luckily, it's the SEGA one.

Yeah it's sickening the stupidity behind that problem. I mean not taking 3 minutes tops to bother reading the official specs printed in clear English right on the bottom of their console.

Is it the large one? I got mine at a thrift store and it was bundled with a Model 2 Sega power supply, and because of that it now doesn't read discs :(
Nomad isn't totally uncommon, but in pretty high demand. $70-80 for a system.

Make sure the CDX power supply says CDX right on. If it doesn't, its likely the power supply for a model 2 Genesis, which shouldn't be used with the CDX.

That reminds me, someone at Sega 16 is selling a Nomad for $35 (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?18781-Sega-Nomad-for-Sale) if anyone's interested. I've already got one otherwise I'd pick it up. Hell of a deal :)

It's the CDX one, says it right on the label. I've been playing it a little bit, and really like the look of the system.

What about using a universal power supply? Those aren't usually underpowered when it comes to Amps.

what's a good price for a loose CDX with one controller, a/v cable, and proper power supply? there is one in a local shop and they are asking $159.99 - it's been sitting there for most of this year, so I am thinking it is on the high side (as is many things in this shop)…

Somewhat high. Still if it really works 100% correct, it's more than worth the compact size and gameplay per dollar.

That's high. I think that it should be closer to $100, just avoid ebay.
I got mine loose for $80, but that was a few years ago.
