View Full Version : What was your greatest moment as a gamer

All of us gamers have moments where we achieved something great in a game. Maybe you bested the Ruby weapon in FF7 or perhaps you beat quake in under an hour on nightmare, or perhaps you... There are many different things that make us gamers happier than we have been while totally owning a video game. I will start us all off with a story about my best moment in gaming.
It was about 10 years ago or so that the local arcade had the Star Wars Trilogy game. http://www.skooldays.com/images/ag1179.jpg
This game was amazing, and it made me a very poor teenager, as all my "extra" money was dumped into this game. While playing one time, I noticed that two people were watching me play the game, just standing there watching the "magic" happen. I had beaten the first stage without getting hit once. When I selected the second mission, the Hoth battle, I noticed that a small group of about 10 people were watching at this point. I bested that stage, likewise without getting tagged once. Then comes the Boba Fett battle, where you block his blaster fire, and deflect some of them back into him. Once again, flawless. When I chose the battle of Endor, there was about 15 or so people just standing there. The feeling of having that many kids and adults watching as a totally smashed this game to bits, was well... I can't rightly describe it. So the battle of Endor went much as the other ones had. I knew the game really well as I had played it a lot and knew exactly when to show this or that. After Endor was the Vader fight, once again it was flawless. I had just beaten 3 out of 4 levels with the two bonus missions, without getting scratched. When the final Deathstar run began, my luck had run out. I started taking damage and even had to continue halfway through the level. About the same time I put in my second dollar the group had left and it was just me and the Deathstar left for my entertainment.
So yeah I didn't beat the game without getting hit or continuing, but the group that showed up to watch me smash the game, was amazing!

I was pk'd by this chick on battle.net. She wrecked my lvl 42 Mage that had great gear... Monster kill hack, took my stuff... For my revenge, I tracked her down in Bar and through the guilds, then married her and shared my life with her for a little over 12 years. Now we're even. LOL

Nothing even comes close to that.

So your best moment in gaming is all about getting owned? Wow... as a gamer... you suck.
However, I do believe that you are the victor. And if she beat you that horribly, I would have tried to find and wed her as well. kudos

Being the 16 year old 'god' of SFII in my local arcade. I still relish the faces of the 'old men' (in their 20's) as I stomped their asses...

Good times.

And here I would have thought it was learning you could jump on a box. Ah, Diablo, it brings back so many memories of PKing certain people. I'll never forget the number of times I "accidently" killed a certain cousin as she'd play with us.

For mine, it'd be when I was able to get my mom to sit down and play a game of Ikari Warriors with me and we used the ABBA cheat to get to the last stage.

Like Sunnyvale420, I'd have to say my most glorious moments in gaming are fighting game related, or to be more specific, Tekken and Street Fighter. Destroying a gang of fighters at SF III with Ken the first time I played the game is a cherished memory. Beating Time Crisis II without having to continue brings back a swelling pride too. :)

I have a couple:

-Finishing Castlevania for the first time during the last few minutes of the 1980s.
-Whomping a couple of 1-on-1 fighting experts at SNES Killer Instinct five times in a row - each (then retiring undefeated).
-Finishing the NES Predator way back when. Damn that was tough. Couldn't do it these days though.

Although I still think my crowning achievements when it comes to gaming in general are publishing a book about gaming (Memoirs of a Virtual Caveman) and being involved in the creation of Splatterhouse '10.

A few that come to mind...

1.) I defeated the Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne boss (the real last boss) and Dragon Quest IV final boss each on the last possible hit. In both cases one more round would've killed my entire party and ended the game. The SMT Nocturne boss battle had been going on for 2 hours...it would've been devastating to die after all that. Thankfully I didn't.

2.) Getting the "If They Came to Hear Me Beg (http://youtu.be/B18Vx9jRijw)" achievement in Halo Reach after 500+ attempts. Some people get it after 1 or 2 tries. Seriously.

3.) Killing the Emerald and Ruby Weapons. Especially considering getting the KOTR materia is just part of killing these guys.

Mine was a true stroke of luck, and definitely a one-off for me. One time I sat down and just 1CC'd Super Darius on the PCE. I couldnt believe it when it happened, but it did. All of that trying and failing in Cave games, Radiant Silvergun, and Gradius III arcade, all on Saturn, around the same time paid off in Darius.

Probably the time I schooled a friend on a wrestling game in front of a bunch of others. Now that doesn't sound like a big deal until you consider inrarely play wrestling games and this particular friend was well known for wanting to play games that he was very familiar with against people who had no idea how to play. Usually it worked ok for him but not this time

1989-1996... indeed the greatest era of gaming for my money. AH, the 16-bit era. What a great fukking time. Not only did gaming grow up, but so did I with it. It was a special time that I'll always remember fondly.

-Convincing my mom to buy me my first SNES game, King of the Monsters, at Software Etc. (remember that?) on a cold chilly late December evening. I still remember it being 54.99 and I was doing my best sales pitch to convince her. I remember telling her only $55! and she retorted with $60 with tax, dear. LOL. When I finally got her to agree, and I saw her reaching to the top shelf to pull that shiny new game off, I swear I almost died. The port left a bit to be desired but did I play the you know what outta that damn game

-Memories of renting! See here for more: http://www.rvgfanatic.com/7443/259301.html

-Magazines ruled! See here for more: http://www.rvgfanatic.com/7464/96301.html

-E-G-effing-M baby! Being a subscriber (well, at least my older brother was) and eagerly anticipating the latest issue in the mailbox. It was like Christmas morning to a degree, it really was (for me)

http://www.rvgfanatic.com/mediac/400_0/media/DIR_1336815/EGMinMB.jpg
OH HELL YEAH!

-Mom n pop rental shops... the smell of oak wood shelves and bells as you entered

-Speaking of which, loved me some Evergreen Video. Before they closed, I remember renting Ultraman in early '92

http://www.rvgfanatic.com/mediac/400_0/media/DIR_1336815/EGVUM.jpg

-The legendary local gaming rental heaven outlet known as GAME HUNTER. Imports galore. Never forget when my best friend Nelson and I came in one Saturday morning and saw Muscle Bomber (Saturday Night Slam Masters), Fighter's History and King of the Monsters 2 all sitting next to each other. This was BEFORE the US versions were released! We about fainted that legendary June morning of 1994. That was the ABSOLUTE peak of the SNES imo. Summer of '94. It was literally the stuff legends were made of. I rented KOTM2 and Nelson rented FH. That weekend we engaged in some serious gaming heaven

-Sonic/Mario clones left and right. Some were great, some were good, some were OK, some were bad. But man, what choices. If you love platformers, 16-bit era was made for you, my friend

-Ditto fighting game genre. I also feel 1994 was the peak of the 2D fighter, same year that I felt the SNES peaked. What a great time

-Ditto the beat 'em up genre. There were so many during '89-'96

-First SNES experience: Winter 1991, vacation in Lake Tahoe. Playing Final Fight and F-Zero alone in the giant cabin while my family and friends went out for breakfast (my mom let me sleep in because I was up all night the night before). Both games blew me away. It seemed like the SNES was so powerful :)

-Seeing arcade conversions pop up on SNES in mere seconds. I remember one day at the mall I played Power Instinct for the first time, liked it, and then went to Walden Books, picked up a gaming mag and saw a preview for SNES Power Instinct. Fukkin' blew away my 10 year old mind!

-Remember when arcade conversions had you excited to have the arcade at home? Sure it was watered down, but at the time you thought your 16-bit SNES had so much damn power. The SFII port blew all of us (me, bro and our friends) away

-Super Mario Kart memories. We had the game and suddenly became the kings of our neighborhood. One time my brother's friend woke me up at like 8:45 on a Sunday morning when he knocked down our door to come in and play SMK

-Super Bomberman/NBA JAM 4-player goodness. Man. My out of town friends and I killed many hours on our legendary sleepovers in '93 and '94 just blowing each other up and slam dunking on one another

-World Heroes 1 and 2 for SNES. Such special memories for me. Loved both ports, loved borrowing my best friend's WH cart and playing endless matches with him during the winter of '93

Man I could go on and on. Great thread, brings back a lot of joyful memories of an era long passed. I just remember the vibrant innocent joy of gaming back then. Appreciation. Magazine for news. Renting and friends for try-outs. Genesis vs. SNES (I was lucky to have both, but SNES won me over post '93). I am lucky now to say although I missed out on a lot of classic SNES games back in the day, I have the honor of playing many of them for the first time today. It's been a blast. There are still many SNES classics I have to play. In a way, it's like going back to the mid '90s. A couple years ago I finally played and beat both Final Fantasy II and III. What awesome gaming experiences.

Thank you, 16-bit era. You rocked.

These are my top achievements:

* Beating Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Genesis with an Atari 2600 joystick and all emeralds

* Beating Abadox for NES without any cheats

* Beating The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy for NES without losing any lives and in 2 hours 10 minutes

* Beating every challenge in Super Smash Bros. Melee

hmm did somebody say Alundra hell? I beat that game too but wouldn't consider it as hard as the above things.

- Playing an adventure game for the first time, Quest For Glory II, which used text commands, typing in some idea that popped into my head that I had no expectation of actually working, and having the game respond to it graphically

- Playing Daggerfall (the demo) for the first time, walking forward and watching an entire three-dimensional city materialize before me in the fog

- In the earliest days of Everquest, being charmed - possessed basically - by a roaming NPC, following him around as a pet completely out of my own control, and then watching helplessly as I was used to attack another player, who killed me

Just little things like that. I've overcome obstacles and achieved higher skill levels and all that, but these are the sort of moments that I remember most.

My greatest achievement is when I (quite gleefully) beat SoulCalibur on the hardest difficulty using the Dreamcast fishing rod controller.

Back then, I was so confident in my skill at that game, I also told a friend I could beat him blindfolded. Of course, he didn't believe me and scoffed at the perceived arrogance of my claim. So, I got up and stood behind the TV, and even closed my eyes for good measure. He chose his best character; I took my second best character. I then kicked his ass 2-0 flawless.

3.) Killing the Emerald and Ruby Weapons. Especially considering getting the KOTR materia is just part of killing these guys.
Oh man, beating the Ruby weapon was a pain in the arsehole. I didn't have any help or ideas from anyone else, I just had to make my own strategy. I ended up fighting the thing for like 14 hours in one fight:help:, but I took the beast down. It was not very fun, but no one else I have met has killed it. Well, one person has, and I only heard about that like a year ago.

Awesome everyone, keep up the bad arse stories people.

Being an anime fan, I sometimes hung out with people at a store called Anime Florida. Reuben brought his PS2 to the store regularly and Mega Man Anniversary Collection just came out. Someone there had purchased it and they started off on Mega Man and were passing the controller around. When I took the controller I got past the stage in a single try and passed it to the next person.

At one point Reuben was just like. "Just give it to the master." Which from then on out they just let me play through the game. I finished off the remainder of Mega Man and everyone just wanted to keep watching me play. So finished Mega Man 2 and 3 before I left.

It's one thing people watching your playthroughs on Youtube another in person. It was pretty satisfying playing through the first three Mega Man titles in front of an audience who continuously commented on how good I was. It's very rare that I actually play any retro games in front of anyone unless it's a video I post on Youtube as most people I know aren't interested in older titles.

When Perfect Dark was first released on the N64, I was a member of the pdark.net forums (long since dead), and we created a speed running competition on a few levels. For the first level, it was 7 of us and I was the leader.

That summer I competed very competitively and our "PD Elite" grew to almost 100 members. I was ranked somewhere in the 10-20 range based on total completion times across all levels and all difficulties.

All of these years later, that little forum-based competition is now http://www.the-elite.net/ , with members from across the globe competing for the fastest Goldeneye and Perfect Dark speed runs. While my original times are nowhere even close to the current records, its nice to see that one forum thread can turn into an impressive community.

Also, some of the videos on that page are amazing. Stuff like 53 seconds on 00 Agent Facility, back when I thought my sub 2:00 time was amazing (2:05 was the Invincibility cheat which was probably the hardest target time in the entire game).

Back when Half-Life was big and Counter-Strike wasn't out yet, I use to be decent. There was a website that use to track all the servers and automatically keep track of everyone's score. If you logged in and played, it kept track of you and you automatically got ranked. At one point, there were more than 120,000 players ranked. I remember one of our friends broke into the top 1000. It doesn't seem that difficult looking back now, but it was a very difficult to do. Once he did it, all of us tried to get ranked higher. At one point, I was ranked at 48th. Like I said, it doesn't sound like a big deal, but 48th out of 100,000 people isn't too shabby. After that, Counter-Strike errupted on the scene and that was the end of Half-Life.

We ended up forming a pretty good CS clan. Out of that, we ran LAN parties down in the LA area which was a blast. Almost 100 people use to show up for a 3 day LAN party.
We rented an Elk's log for the party. It worked out great cuz it had a bar and kitchen, both didin't shut down for the whole 3 days we were there. Unlimited beer, food, and games! Good times indeed!!!

Back in the fifth grade I was the guy who could beat any game. I coudn't get past 6-2 on ninja gaiden and gave up when I rented it.

in the sixth grade a friend asked if I could beat ninja gaiden, I said I could (not that I did) and he begged to come over my house with the game and watch me beat the game to see the ending (he coudln't get past level 3)

I eventually relented and after school I played and played till I got up to that spot in 6-2 (you know the one) died a couple times, then my older smarter brain decided to hold onto the jump and slash technique to get past THAT spot, and it worked like a charm and was able to blow through the rest of the game. I kept it cool, and never told him it was the first time I finished the game!

Note: This is a spoiler for FFVI

Back when I was a kid I would play final fantasy 6. Of course I still play it from time to time but back then it was me and my older brother. Each with his own save file.

My brother would hog the nintendo most of the time and would be very thorough as he went through the world. He drew charts and lists (a hobby he keeps to this day) to get as much juice as possible out of his characters. He thus maximised the character "Shadow" who was a shared favourite of ours.

It made him quite upset when he had to leave Shadow behind in the sky. Just before the world came crumbling to pieces... and when I later reached that place I stubbornly stood behind and waited for Shadow to arrive. My brother was taunting me how I was going to get -EVERYONE- killed and that he was much further ahead in the game than me.
He did this with sadistic glee.. but it quickly disappeared as Shadow came running in the final seconds and the entire party made a clean get-away.

The result was that he restarted his game and while his maxed-out characters eventually would fly through the later part of the game like a breeze .. and my merry band would be set back every step of the way and end every boss fight on the brink of death and game over .. I beat the game before he did.
It is my personal videogame equivalent of the turtle and hare story. ;)

I had a gaming Zen moment with Sonic 1. I borrowed the game from a friend of a friend the week it first came out. I got a phone call from the friend saying the friend of a friends mom was pissed he lent the game out to a friend of a friend and demanded he get it back. He would be by that evening to pick it up. So I had a few hours left with this game that was completely blowing me away. I decided to try and beat it with all the emeralds before my time was up. I focused, got comfortable, and had a near perfect run with that game, minimal deaths and grabbed all the emeralds with a few levels to spare. Those bonus stages were tricky, when I play them now I wonder how I did it.

Also as far as drawing a crowd goes. I used to get some bystanders when I'd start a 2-player game of Gunblade NY and use one gun in each hand. Its quite a satisfying feeling, try it with that or LA Machineguns if you get a chance.

This thread has made me remember a lengthy thread I posted here over 6 years ago(!), where I shared stories about several different games from my past. Holy cats, I'm old!

Entry #17 was for the NES ports of Section Z and Gauntlet, which my friend Warren and I completed on the same weekend, after previously considering both unbeatable. It was my most triumphant gaming moment. But rather than writing the story again, I'll just link to it (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showpost.php?p=672211&postcount=86).

Some of my best moments as a gamer were ones shared with friends through playing 2-player games on the NES and SNES way back in the day. The reason I say that is because of the fun memories that were created from sharing that gaming experience with someone, you don't often find that anymore with current games or at least not as much as with games of yesteryear. Playing and beating games like TMNT II, Contra, Double Dragon, Rampage, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and other fun 2-player titles will always be memories that I will never forget, and as a gamer I couldn't ask for anything more.

So many to choose from, I will pick a couple. Recently, a good friend of mine and myself beat Ghouls and Ghosts Twice on the Sega Genesis. It took us a couple of hours, but it was fun to play though a game that is rarely seen at its true ending.

Also, about 6 years ago, I played though Magician Lord with some of my friends on my Neo Geo AES. The ending is extremely brutal, and it was a very savory moment to see the ending of that game.

One of the more stupid ones... A friend got Mortal Kombat on Sega CD and we were playing it. One match I had Sonya Blade, and came out kicking -- and kept kicking. I literally just hit the high kick 4 or 5 times and dropped him without taking any damage myself. I don't know if I'd EVER seen him that pissed off before. :-)

Beating Dynamite Headdy without continuing, the last boss is just a nightmare...

Also beating Beyond Zork with minimal (very minimal) use of the hint book, the game is sooo difficult. Played this for the first time in grade school, finally beat it when I was in college. It was very rewarding to finally get that coconut back!

I belonged to a big group that sanctioned league races in the old Papyrus developed NASCAR games. One year, probably back in 2003, they started to do the occasional full length race.

That required lots of planning on the part of the league, qualifying competitions (We had far more than just 42 members, the limit for a single race), people would paint custom racecars for the special events, and the drivers had to be able to accomodate a 4-5 hour length of time on the morning of raceday to do some final practicing, qualifying to detirmine where you were going to actually start in the race, and the race itself.

That first year, we ran a full 400 mile race under the lights at Daytona, a full 400 lap (300 mile) race at Richmond, and a full 500 mile race at Talladega.

I walked away with the victory in all three events. When I finally stopped racing several years ago, I had won an even 150 races in NASCAR Racing 4/2002/2003 in league environments (Usually around 40% of the length of the real thing), something like 10 league championships (I'd have to check), and countless numbers of random pickup races on public servers that I never bothered to track (I'd say it's fair to say that the number is somewhere around 500). And a rough estimate places me at around 750,000 miles ran.

Playing as Mouse Man in Dragon's Curse, bypassing all other forms and beating Tiger Man's boss to jump straight into bird man.

With only the Shadow Cat form in Shape Shifter, morph jumping my way into the final area and finishing the game.

The first time I clocked Super Mario Land on Gameboy. I think I was in a laundromat. And the next biggest moment was when I clocked it more than once (",)

Not sure I've ever clocked any other game...

Walking into Someplace Else arcade and seeing the rows of Galaga and Ms Pac-Man cocktails the week that they came out. A sight and feeling I'll never forget.

Runner up is playing Tempest for the first time at the same arcade...
