Hello. I am getting a Sega Genesis Model 1 with the Sega CD Model 1, and I don't think it comes with the shields that go on the bottom of the Genesis. I know the system will work without them, but will be less stable and cause more RF interference.
Problem is, my setup currently dictates that the system will go above my TV and in front of my cassette tapes and records. Will any of my tapes be erased by the interference? I don't want to lose my Elvis Christmas 8-track :(

I seriously doubt it. Strong EM fields can erase tapes but not RF. The shields are typically added to the box to meet requirements on RF interference. If the laws weren't in place you can bet they wouldn't have included them. The worst that would happen is that noise would get on your video or audio signals. If you don't notice anything or you're ok with how it looks and sound then I wouldn't worry about it. Otherwise you might want to track down some shields.

Thank you very much! I still might move the tapes to another place though. Just to be safe :)

I got the Genesis and Sega CD. I decided to keep the tapes where they are.
Anyway I have another situation. On the controller ports there is one pin missing. I looked it up and it seems that it is the +5V pin. The controllers work fine, but I only own control pads. If I get a Menacer or a wireless control pad will they work?
Here is what the pins look like.
OOOOX OOOOO
OOOO OOOO
The X is the missing one.

Considering I'm unsure where the chip that runs the show inside the controller is getting power this is rather interesting.
Truthfully the Menacer is a waste of money unless you're like me and enjoy playing with gimmicks. Infrared based controllers were and still are garbage with the whole "line of sight" requirement. Unless someone has made a nice RF controller.

I just want to know if the controllers will work. They seem interesting.

Won't know until you try them. The Menacer and IR controllers receive IR from the gun/controllers passively. I don't think missing that +5v pin will matter but I could very well be wrong.
