If Japanese games aren't about walking down a corridor and fighting, what is Final Fantasy XIII?
A lot of modern Japanese games are being designed to appeal to the western audience. Which means big graphics, long cutscenes and mindless gameplay.

Here's some Dynasty Warriors 7 gameplay. You don't get any more mindless than that. This garbage is always a big seller in Japan.

I think alot of people tend to forget that alot of the best games made in the west were on PCs at the time. Everything from C64, Amiga, DOS, AppleII, etc. and others. Yes, the japanese did enjoy Wizardry and SimCity very much, both of which are american games, and Rayman, a french game, was and still is absolutely amazing. Many of these games can share their place easily with the best 2D japanese games of the same era, so I think western games have had more credibility for much longer than some weeaboos acknowledge, as they were mostly console gamers and grew up playing japanese games almost exclusively, which dominated the console market during those years.
