Is it even possible to like a bad game like you do a bad movie? I love good bad movies like Troll2, Skinned Deep and the occasional Ed Wood disasterpiece, so are there any video game equivalents? Maybe the game besides having a bad plot has horribly good dialog that makes it endearing to you? Maybe not terrible music but music that doesnt suite the game at all anywhere? Maybe the controls arent bad but the characters look bad doing stuff? You know all those things combined into one, or other weird bad things in them?

Its just a weird thought I have.

For some reason Im thinking of Yo Noid, is that worth tryin out?

I have always found Pit Fighter for Sega Genesis to be the finest cheese.
The N64 port of Cruis'n USA is pretty awesome/terrible as well.

Well any regular NES games that had bad memory like Ninja Gaiden, because those damn reappearing birds were so annoying, but loved the game because it was so difficult.

Magician Lord, (Neo Geo, PS2/Wii collection, Wii VC) while not a bad game, has some of the choicest dialogue of all time. Worth playing just to witness the threatening words of Gal Agiese. It's also near impossible to beat, unless you are a total masocore ninja gamer. Or use unlimited credits with continues right where you die (PS2 collection), even then it's a bitch.

Earnest Evans (Genesis) There is just something wrong with the way the main character is animated.

X-Perts (Genesis) The horrid sound effect from dying enemies in this game will haunt your dreams forever.

Yeah I dont like the mechanics of arcade scrollers; theyre by design made to take your quarters. I have it for Kawaks and love the graphics, but I get lost all the time and have to keep pressing F11 for quarters. I even find Metal Slug to be a bit monotonous since I die so many times and the bosses take a million hits with the hand gun so I kill my self just to get the machine gun again.

I saw Earnest Evans on game sack, that guy looks like a robot haha.

Ill check out X-Perts on Kega

Bebe's Kids. The controls are terrible but once you get used to them the game isn't that bad, people online make the game look like it's unbeatable but I made it to the last level the first time I played it. For a licensed game it follows the source material pretty closely and there's enough varied gameplay alternating levels that it doesn't get monotonous. I'm honestly surprised I like the game as much as I do, I absolutely hate the movie it's based on.

It's deliciously awful. Stiff, awkwardly CG-animated characters, ear-gouging sound effects, broken mechanics. It's a nightmare come true.

Virtual Hydlide on Saturn. I had this game when it came out and actually liked it. Your digitized character is overweight, the graphics are horribly pixelated and choppy, and some of the sound effects are atrocious. It's just all-around cheesy, especially the intro and ending.

I still find it to be a fun romp. You get a completely different map everytime you play and you can actually see the armor change on your character when you switch equipment. Some of the music was actually pretty decent. It was an open world 3D action-rpg, there was nothing else like it at the time.

Yo Noid! is a great game. It was one of my favorites as a kid.

Yo! Noid receives way too much hate for the fun little time capsule of late '80s pizza marketing meets solid platforming game that it is. I think part of that hate is due to the deceptive way in the first level that the rising and falling of the water kills you because it looks like you're in the clear when you're not. A frustrating first stage flaw like this can turn off many gamers before they even give it a chance. The boss "battles," despite being creative are pretty weak, though.

Now Productions, the actual developer of the game while Capcom published it, also gave the NES the second and third sequels to Adventure Island as well as the New Adventure Island for the Turbografx-16, which is probably my favorites in the series, and the Katamari series on the PS2 and Xbox 360, so I am definitely a fan of their other work, too.

I like to occasionally go through a quick session of NES AD&D Heroes of the Lance. It takes less than 20 minutes to complete, so it can be a fast warmup game to kick back with for awhile, and I find battling against those dwarfs to be oddly entertaining.

I really like some games on the Jaguar that seem to be universally panned. Zool 2 is one of my favorite games for it, and one of my favorite platformers of all time, and it usually gets a lot of hate.

Club Drive I can understand. It's visuals are horrendous, but the underlying gameplay is creative enough to keep messing with it.

I also really like Toki on every platform - including arcade - that I can get it on. It's made stupidly hard for the arcade, yet I really like it.

Another Nintendo Nerd ripoff, obviously. When I say ripoff I'm serious. He copies a lot of James' stuff word for word. While he does it though it's just not funny. He tries too hard.

Well I saw some other videos about Noid before I saw the Irate video on it. That dude creeps me out for some reason, and the AVGN stuff he does just makes him seem creepier. I liked his normal reviews of Mortal Kombat and Marvel vs Capcom. Wish hed just do that kind of reviewing. I dont get why the hate for him is so big though.

So he's some dude who is a ripoff of another lame youtube game reviewer? And rips off Ghosthunters as well? And people watch it?

Back on topic, Battle Monsters on Saturn is another "so bad it's good" game.

I second Crusin' USA and Virtual Hydlide. I often find myself checking out stuff that the AVGN has reviewed and a lot of the time, I end up enjoying it. Like Friday The 13th or the Crazy Castle series. I also like Atari Pac-Man, if only because it was the first version I ever played as a youn'n.

I dont get why the hate for him is so big though.

When some of his material is copied word for word from the very person who influenced him into doing these videos. That's why so many people hate him. He's an unoriginal hack.

No one has a problem with other people using that style to bash games. There are hundreds of other reviewers who do so now, many of them being as well known as James, but these people don't just rip off another user. It's like when you see a stand up comedian rip off another comedian, no matter how far into the future it is, that comedian will receive a ton of backlash from fans. James has started getting away from trying to be so funny and actually puts a greater emphasis on his reviews now, but the reason for the comedian comment is because that's what these videos are. That's why people don't hate every single angry reviewer that comes along as they all have their own style. Except for a few like Irate Gamer who rips off others.

I like Atari Pac-Man too! I don't know why though, I think it is just rare for me to play vintage and classic games I don't enjoy, as even if they aren't good I still get a good laugh at them. Seriously though I've maybe found 2 Genesis games I didn't like. I love Joe Montanna Football on Genesis. 'Nough said.

Edit: Is anyone else like this? I guess I really am just easily amused by everything in life come to think of it. Maybe that's why I love all these old games so much :)

Alone in the Dark 2: One Eye'd Jack's Revenge.

This game is the Troll 2 of video games. The plot, acting, and game play are so bad it's funny. Actually it's hilarious.

My favorite moment includes beating up a drunk man in his underwear (who may or may not be flirting with you), to steal his Santa Claus suit, so that you can wear it and enter the mansion of immortal pirates undetected. They don't mind you if they think you are Santa.

HAHA! Glad you know what Troll 2 really is. Sounds good. I didnt have any interest in playing the first game, but this seems good.

Ill play with my thoughts on most of the suggested games today and reply with what I think.

I used to love the 32X version of Night Trap, and it's HORRIBLE.

I also really liked The Hoard. I had the 3DO version. It was actually a wonderful little tower defense style game (I believe that's the genre), but the story and cut scenes featuring Kurt Cameron were ABYSMAL. Just terrible.

Last Alert and Final Zone II on the Turbo Grafx CD have the most amazingly bad dialog during the MANY cut scenes through out the game. I fucking LOVE these games. LOVE them.

Way of the Warrior for 3DO...JESUS CHRIST.

Mickey is and old arcade game that you can play on MAME. It's basically just about a kid who's an asshole, and disrupts class by knocking the other students out of their chairs with her ass. If the teacher see your doing it be comes after you, and I be leave you head butt the shit out of him and drop him to his knees. The controls are also horrible.

Alex Kidd the Lost Stars for the SEGA Master System is pretty bad, but I like it. It's sort of like an like an H.R. Pufnstuf platform game starring Alex Kidd.

Alex Kidd: High Tech World for the Master System is also pretty horrible, but it just so weird with the whole role play story portion that I can't help but love it.

Thunderforce II is a mess of a shooter with alternating overhead and sidescrolling levels. The overhead levels are God awful with HORRIBLE controls, and the digital Japanese voice that says what your weapon upgrades are is LAUGHABLE terrible. GO! (translation: Claw) LOOOORD! (Translation: Roll), but I really enjoy this game.

Syd of Valis is a super deformed version of Valis 2 for Genesis. It's completely weird in that it's got insane ramps in the difficulty where it goes from a 1 to a 10 and then back down to a 1 again all through out the game. The story and cut scene are all gibberish, and the flicker and poor controls are awful. I absolutely love the game though because it's so bizarre, and weirdly pedophilic. Some of the outfits are creepily racy for a cute little super deformed child to wear. I have no idea who this game is meant for. Actually, no. I do..the Japanese. I just don't know how it made it Stateside.

I don't care for any of them. A bunch of corny dorks who get drunk, play a terrible game, and think they are funny because they spew profanity at it. I've only cared to watch a few youtube videogame videos like Game Sack and Mark from CGR. People who actually review a game instead of trying to be something they're not.

Clayfighter 63 1/3 (N64) and Road Avenger (Mega CD) were always strangely enjoyable. Actually, a lot of the N64's bad games (Superman etc) are worth a look. There is something wonderful about seeing just how horrible they are.

Here's a handful I thought of. All terrible, but alluring for one reason or another. For some its the graphics, for others the pure ridiculousness of it all. Some I actually like to play quite a bit:

NES:
Amagon
Captain Skyhawk
Clash at Demonhead
Golgo 13
Ikari Warriors

TG16:
China Warrior
Veigues Tactical Gladiator

Sega CD:
Sol Feace
Silpheed

Jaguar:
Cybermorph
Hover Strike
Blue Lightning CD

PSX:
Burning Road
Jupiter Strike

This is my top pick. The frame rate dips down to about 4 FPS sometimes. It's horrendous. But I've beaten it and loved it.

I also second Club Drive. That's one of my favorite racing games, but, boy, is it glitchy! You'll find yourself going downward into the road for no reason at least once per playthrough.

PS1 and PS2 have a ton of fantastic crap. Heres some of my favorite Z grade titles...

Metal Jacket - PS1 (one of the only games to be released which was developed on the first model ps1 "Rack" development system)
X Men Mutant Academy 1 & 2 - PS1 (These games get a bad rap but I like them both and think they are unique 3d fighters that came out late in the ps1's life)
Wu Tang Shaolin Style/Thrill Kill - PS1 (Thrill Kill was never released due to immense controversy, but the game was basically changed into This Wu Tang Clan game. Its fun and worth a check out to see what Thrill Kill could have been, or you can find the actual Thrill Kill prototype online....)
Stretch Panic - PS2 (A strange and forgotten game developed by Treasure)
Ra. One - PS2 (A Game based off of a Bollywood (India) film that was released last year. Not to many games developed specifically for the India gaming market, it kinda sucks but is kinda fun and just the fact its a India exclusive makes it cool)
Demolition Girl/The Daibijin - PS2 (A qwirky title where you must stop a 50 ft. woman from destroying Japan. Its so weird....lots of breasts and butts, no US release obviously but it did see a European release and was part of the Simple 2000 series in Japan)

Sometimes people call good games bad just because they suck at them. Games that are really glitchy deserve the criticism though because not all the bugs were worked out.

Another NES game I enjoyed parts of but had too many flaws was Castle of Dragon.

Doom Troopers For the Sega Genesis Is a great co-op so bad it's good game. Broken boss fights that don't Make any sense, Landmines everywhere that look just like the ground, And having to sync your platforming and falling So one character doesn't leave the screen and lose a continue. Oh yeah, and giant fans that sucks you in and Chop you up.

But short levels, lots of continues, and a awesome gore Factor make the game very manageable and all the half assed ideas pretty fun, in a "wow, I can't believe they left it like that" sort of way.

The SNES Version that came out a few months later Is cleaned up quite a bit.
