I'd just like to say that your photography skills are making me want to own every single thing you are making.

:)

Wiggy, you are doing absolutely outstanding work! I just gained so much resepct for you (not that i didnt already lol) for putting so much work and craftsmanship into these products! I will certainly be checking out the repros you are making, they sound way cool. Best of luck with the custom cartridge mold idea you mentioned in your blog, it sounds awesome!

Thank you! The custom cart shells will be a blast because I can have unique designs for each game if need be with logos and graphics "molded" into the shape itself :D

I just went through this thread for the first time and was blown away with the quality of your products. It was very fun looking through everything and it's cool how your casing looks miles better than what was produced by multi-billion dollar corporations (I guess that's just what happens when engineers need to cut production costs). Anyways, I sent you a PM about GBC related stuff.

You just got shutdown on cheap ass gamer for piracy.

Again the rules on here.

Out of respect to retrogaming stores, game developers, and growing legal concerns, discussion about the obtaining of illegal ROMs is prohibited. Illegal ROMs are defined as any ROM, regardless of age, that has been copyrighted in the past 100 years. Threads discussing the location or acquiring of ROMs and/or illegal (pirated) software will be locked per the discretion of a forum moderator or administrator. To avoid legal issues, "gray area" threads dealing with emulation may also be locked. As companies continue to release retro games through virtual releases or retro gaming packs for modern gaming systems, the threat of getting a cease-and-desist order grows. In order to preserve the gaming community we've all worked so hard to build, we ask that you respect Digital Press and refrain from the discussion of illegal ROMs.

Exactly! No reason that we can't have customshells for a large number of games out there and swapping them doesn't even mean destroying an original copy. Heck, it'll let you preserve the original shell/label all that much longer :)

Yeah, about that.

I've reviewed this thread several times over and I'm not seeing where there is discussion of ROMs, hotlinks to ROM files, etc. am I missing something?

As far as the rest of the thread, as it has been since the beginning, just stick to showcasing the product/process and not turning this into a "shop" thread and we're good as far as I'm concerned.

From the time I made my post he went and edited his and deleted the copyright infringement part. Now he's legit as he's only offering custom modding services and not anything with copyrighted material.

Which is the zelda repros and the branded Nintendo labels he was using. Even though there was no discussion of ROMS he was trying to sell them illegaly since he doesn't have a proper licence.

All he did was dump a ROM on a cartridge and slap a label on it.

Like I said he got shut down on cheapassgamer.

Some peple are too stupid to realize a repro made without a proper license is no different then downlaoding roms and emulators to your PC. All he did was put them on a cartridge instead and slap a label on from a laser printer.

Well.. needler420 you certainly seem to have a strong opinion of it.

I think wiggyx has shown nothing but enthusiasm and good will in his projects so far. I do agree that the developer of the ROM should get a part of the profits, but I feel your post may be overly aggressive and there are better ways to make your point.

Well, if the offending material has been willingly removed, I don't see a problem.

Promotion and sale of rom-dumps on donor cartridges is a troublesome gray area for sure. Wiggy, per our policies, it's best to keep the business of those carts relegated to your own site.

Let's leave it at that and not ruin all the great stuff in this thread.

After reading your interview I noticed something funny, I too take everything apart that i get and hope it doesnt break! I took apart my Game Boy original the other day to try to see if I could do some sort of mod like you and others do but realized I hadnt even thought of what mod to do, I just wanted to open it up to see how it works hahaha.

When the GB Micro came out, the faceplates it actually came with were all pretty poorly done. These faceplate designs alone would've convinced me to get one, the Pokémon starters are great. Venusaur is my favorite of the designs, but I am biased since I always choose Bulbasaur in the original games. I think the plates do a good job of representing Pokémon and making it stylish but being subtle at the same time. For example, it isn't bright and all over the place like a lot of the official Pokémon merch (40+ creatures on one shirt).

Would it be possible to modify the GBA backlight to operate like the Game Boy Light; with a third notch on the power switch so you just push it further to turn the light on? I don't want a separate switch for the light since I prefer a more streamlined case design, but I also want the benefit of choosing whether I want the backlight active or not.

It can't be shut off. Light needs to be on for you to view the backlit screen at all.

lol that is pretty awesome...also hideously...inexcusably cute O:

Are the buttons molded from new plastic with glitter at the top? It looks like it!

Nomad X looks really awesome too. I'll wait to see some details of the screen (like whether it is the same resolution and same or better lag performance, and whether it displays any input channel garbage like some TFTs used in Nomad mods do), but I assume it otherwise uses regular Nomad internals?

For sure! Like gives you a cavity cute :P

Yeah, I cast the buttons in either an acrylic or polyester resin with special dyes, and in this instance, iridescent pink glitter ;)

The LCD mod is nothing new. It uses a rear-view camera LCD meant for automotive apps that can be found on eBay. I think the original how-to is on racketboy. The problem with these things (LCDs) is that they come from China, and there's no guarantee that you'll get the same exact product every time you order, despite using the same seller :/ I've received 3 slightly different versions since I've started offering the mod, and I've only done about 5-6. The price fluctuates all over the place too, again, despite using the same seller. I've just started buying 5+ when the price gets into the $25 range.

As far as resolution goes, I have no idea. I do know that there doesn't appear to be any pixel distortion. There is indeed some slight lag. As I'm sure you can imagine (with your knowledge of LCD tech) there is some lag. These obviously aren't high end displays, so it is what it is. But, it's still a massive improvement over the original LCD if for no other reason than the image quality. The LCD is also slightlylarger than the original display, so a small portion of the screen gets nudged off the edge. I'm talking with a fellow about making some lenses with a slightly wider opening to help with this, then I'd only need to cut away a small portion of the plastic shell to make the entire LCD visible.

What would be interesting is to figure out whether or not these displays can accept anything besides composite signal...

Yes, otherwise Nomad guts. No serious modification is really required since the Nomad already has an A/V out and 12V power source. Just splice the new LCD into the video out and 12V, cut the old LCD out, squeeze new parts in shell :)

Also, a little blue bomber is getting his own micro as well :)

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k99/wiggyx/Wiggy%20Design/9664CE3A-947F-4B45-B69F-4919B8730809-861-000000BF2EFAA512_zpse4c57445.jpg

This one is just a random one-off that I built because I had the parts and was already making that Kirby unit, so this one will actually be up for grabs when I finish it up!

You make a good point (which I didn't really acknowledge out of fear of topic derailment), but yeah, I've never checked the original Nomad screen for lag. It's probably something that could be improved on. I've seen some shots of Nomad screen mods which seem to show more picture overall than the Nomad, which is noteworthy in of itself. Maybe somebody will eventually invent a flat display with CRT-like resolution handling so we can get a perfect portable Genesis experience, but that's just a pipe dream for now...The more important question, which I really should have found the answer to already: Did the original Nomad screen directly accept the Nomad's RGB signal for its input? Even if the new screens are doing composite input only, they're still a huge improvement visually. If I can be excused for extending the rant a bit longer: There are some systems (portable CD-i, portable PC-Engine or TurboGrafx) where I prefer the original LCDs for that classic '90s look. The Sega systems aren't among these.

What would be a really awesome project is something that gets a Game Gear with video output inside a new housing (I don't think any of the current mods fit within the GG housing), while retaining a built-in screen, for maximally flexible (and usable) Game Gear play.

The original is so miserably laggy :( I was just messing with one a little earlier today and it was way worse than I remember even :/

Not sure about the original. I've never looked much into how it's connected since the mod requires nothing of the original LCD hardware and it literally gets sliced off the board.

A couple of updates on the ol' blog, folks. Feel free to have a gander!

4-19-2013 Notice: Please excuse and delay in email/blog/FB/forum replies, shipping, or the completion of orders. To make a long story short, my wife went into labor at 32 weeks on the 16th. What preceded that were other related issues which required a LOT of my time and attention in the 2 weeks leading up to the delivery. We had a healthy baby boy and I'm just now getting back to my desk to answer emails and get orders moving again. I'm so terribly sorry if this has caused any inconvenience or problems. Rest assured, I will take care of any issues, questions, or concerns as soon as humanly possible. Thank you for your patience.

I am putting a hold on any incoming orders for custom items until I can get caught up. I will resume taking pre-orders/orders for custom items once I've managed to catch up a bit. Keep an eye on the blog and Facebook pages for updates regarding my return to accepting new orders. I will continue to take orders for production items such as the micro faceplates, backlight kits, & Glass GBA lenses in the meantime.

If you already have an order placed or have sent an item or items in to be modded, then rest assured that you’ll be taken care of. I will not be canceling any orders as of this moment.

Thank you,
wiggy

I was referring more to the gba kit when i mentioned mods. Very interested in those faceplates, sadly my micro is pink so it wouldn't go well with most of those awesome faceplate designs but i'd still pick a few up as they would make great replacements down the line if i get another micro.

{edit} just seen your new post yay a pink faceplate hehe

Now if only you could mod a gba to make it look like the original beta version that they sadly never released as a real colour

Made some custom micros that'll be up for grabs when the store re-opens. Here's a little teaser :)

Wait, so these replacement LCDs only take a composite signal? That's rather far from ideal, isn't it? :(

At that size not too much. Harder to get color at both 50hz and 60hz.

Nomad outputs RGB even though it wasn't released anywhere often used.

Update: The webstore is up-and-running! (well, for the most part. It'll be up and down all day while we make some tweaks). If the store is down when you try and visit, then it'll redirect you to the wordpress blog. Just check back later if that happens.

Dear lord that NES style Micro is gorgeous.

Need to keep reminding myself I already have at least 20 options to play GBA stuff on the go. :D

Hey I love the megaman micro skin. How hard is it to replace the stock buttons with blue ones?

The store looks great! I had a minor heart attack when I saw those Zelda homebrews on the site again as "Sold Out". I hope those come back, I'm really intrigued by them.

No, he makes money on making awesome stuff like this:

I just want to say, "TAKE ALL MY MONEY!" Sadly, I won't have money to spend for a while now. Also wish the Zelda set was available for PAL, as well. ;)

Edit: Perhaps that could be arranged later, somehow? In regards to the Zelda games, I mean?

Wiggyx,
If you're making repos are you going to be making covers for them as well for those of us that only buy games if we can put them in a UGC? I know you have the skill set needed as you're always making stuff on TCP.net.

Wiggyx you make beautiful objects but at this kind of prices I cannot justify buying them. At 150$ for EB0 while I can get a good repro of the game for 35$, I have a hard time justifying spending more than 4x the price in order to get that fancy look you strive for.

I'm jealous really. I feel you are becoming the BMW of retro world

I keep a close eye on your products, maybe someday you'll release something I'll want badly enough to throw all my money at you and thank you for it LOL. Best of luck with your new store and if you continue to dwell into the world of reproductions keep an eye out for occasions to share a % of your sales with the translator/hackers that brought the game to us, that would be a classy move.
