I've barely played any games for the last month or so. Last night, I finally picked Welcome to Pia Carrot for PC-FX back up, and I played through most of the game focusing on Saori. I just have a few days left, and I'm really hoping I did everything right since she's a tough nut to crack. I've gotten no special scenes with her so far, but maybe they mostly come with the ending.
Other than that, I've only briefly tried out some recently acquired stuff. I played a tiny bit of Battle B-Daman on my Game Boy Advance SP, and I tried out Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army (what a title) on PS2. I also popped Sin and Punishment: Star Successor into the Wii, and I pulled my TurboGrafx-16 out of the closet to try World Class Baseball and TV Sports Hockey.

It's a good thing I made a backup save for Saori in Welcome to Pia Carrot on PC-FX because I screwed myself out of her ending near the end and it took me a little while to figure out just exactly what to do (annoying trial and error to figure out where exactly she runs off to). I had to do the wrong thing to unlock all of her pictures, though, so I'm glad I didn't do the right thing right off the bat and miss those. After Saori, I finally met the semi-secret character, Yukari, and proceeded to clear the game with her. Ugh, what lame story she has. It's basically nonexistent, and I didn't even enjoy what little I did learn about her because she's such a thoroughly unappealing character. It's not like she's a jerk or anything, but she makes even Shouko look like the picture of maturity and emotional/intellectual development. Anyway, after her, I finally beat the game with Satomi, seeing the canon story and ending (since the protagonist and her are married in the later games). I also learned of a sort of "neutral" ending with Satomi and Shouko and got that too. With that, I've seen every ending in the game. There are a couple scenes I missed and some alternate versions of scenes with the different uniforms I haven't gotten yet, so there's even more replay value if I'm feeling up for it.

I still haven't been playing much lately. I'm pretty burnt out on Welcome to Pia Carrot for PC-FX. Not that I dislike the game, I've just had my fill for now. I never expected the game to last me so long. I decided to not bother with getting the same scenes with alternate costumes any time soon since that requires too many replays, but I do want to get the couple unique scenes I missed. I'm half way through a file (I think I can get all I'm missing in just one replay), but I'm stumped on how to get one particular scene. I've been asking around, and I'm waiting on this one guy who offered to help to post again before I resume playing that file.
Other than that, I bought Sparkling Feather for PC-FX and gave that a try. I'm a little disappointed that it's not a more traditional strategy RPG like Fire Emblem or Shining Force. I mean, it's nice that it's not completely formulaic, but I can't make sense out of all the menu options. It's either going to take some more trial and error and fumbling through to figure it out, or I can just hope that it'll get an English FAQ or patch someday. Oh well, it's not like I was intending to play it right away anyway.
I also played a match game of Neo Turf Masters with my fiance on our consolized MVS. Got the game for him on his birthday. It's nice to finally have the real deal.

Ugh, it's been months since I played anything seriously. All I've played was a tiny bit of Welcome to Pia Carrot after ignoring my PC-FX for a month, just to get the last couple unique scenes I missed, and then I packed the PC-FX away for the time being. And for what it's worth, I briefly tried out a few recent acquisitions. I got Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time and Hammerin' Hero for PSP, both of which seemed pretty good, and Dawn of Mana for PlayStation 2. Even though I'm not of the sort who thinks a Mana game needs to be EXACTLY like Secret of Mana (as much as I do indeed love Secret of Mana), I can kind of see why Dawn of Mana gets such criticism from what little I played. It looks and sounds beautiful for the most part (although blech on the character designs), but it's so hack'n'slash-y and meandering. Feels like a lot of button mashing without purpose.
Anyway, it's time to do something about my gaming lull, so I decided to start up Legacy of Ys: Books I & II for DS. I want something fairly action-y and short, so it seemed to fit the bill. And even though I own and have tried out multiple Ys titles, I've never played a single one to completion. In fact, I don't have a ton of experience with Falcom in general, and what experience I have had hasn't been great. Let's hope this "Legacy of" Falcom game treats me better than Legacy of the Wizard, haha. I know this version is kind of pooh-poohed by diehard Ys fans, but it's the only release of the first two Ys games that I own and since my Ys experience is slim, I don't really care about the minutia between the various versions. So far I'm having a good time with it. Just arrived at the town of Zeptik with a bit under 2 hours on the clock. The only complaint I'd have so far is that wandering the plains gets a little dull after a while since it all looks the same, there's not much to find, and a lot of it is just wide open space. So far the game is reminding me a lot of Lagoon, which makes sense since I knew all along that Lagoon is an Ys rip-off. And the specific versions I played are similar in that both switched from a bumping/ramming attack mechanic to traditional sword-slashing (when Lagoon went from X68k to SNES and the original versions of Ys to DS, respectively).

To no big surprise, I've already beaten the first Ys via Legacy of Ys: Books I & II for DS. Great, brisk little adventure. Just how I like my games. It goes by fast but it's really eventful, so it doesn't feel too short. It also brought back lots of fond memories of playing Lagoon (yes, I actually like that game). I mean, like I said before, I heard that Lagoon is an Ys rip-off years ago, but holy cow are they not joking. The farther I got into Ys, the more I encountered parts that felt almost EXACTLY like parts in Lagoon. It's kind of a shame that I never played Ys before Lagoon and didn't get the proper perspective when playing it. Ys is definitely a much more polished game, though, so it's easily the superior game. But the final portion did feel a little cobbled together, which I suppose makes sense since originally this game and Ys II were meant to be a single game. I actually didn't even realize I was in the final dungeon at first. I also half-expected the final boss to have a second form because the battle was over so quick and then I was just standing there doing nothing. Not much of an ending either, and a lot of mysteries were left unanswered (even if the game made it painfully obvious who the villain would be and who the goddesses are before I even started playing).
Even though I'm typically not inclined to play multiple entries in a series back-to-back (short of replays of old favorites that I can breeze through), I already started up Ys II. It just feels like that's what I'm "supposed" to do, what with how the games are usually packaged together and the aforementioned fact that they were originally intended to be one. The manual doesn't even explain the two games separately. My battery started running low right after I began (I actually got through the entirety of the first game on one charge, probably not even a full charge at that), so I'm literally right at the beginning, saved in front of the house I started in (what's with both games starting with somebody finding you unconscious in the wild and nursing you back to health in a bed in their home?)
Other than my Ys playing, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I played a little 3DS. It's mostly been my fiance's system since getting it, so it was the first time I messed with it for more than a minute or two. I played the first 20-some levels of Crashmo, which was basically all tutorial, and I tried out Fire Emblem: Awakening for a bit.
I also briefly tried out Gungnir on PSP, which I recently bought. I still find Sting games pretty overwhelming. The user interface is so cluttered with text and such that I hardly know where to look. Seemed fairly traditional as far as strategy RPGs go in spite of that, though, and it seems like something I could have fun with after getting used to its presentation.

I'm still chugging along with Ys II via Legacy of Ys: Books I & II for DS. I have around 13 hours on the clock, I believe, and I just beat Lady Zava. I'm guessing I'm pretty close to the end of the game, considering my menu is nearly full and my HP is maxed out. It's been a good ride, although I think at the end of the day, I'll prefer the first Ys over Ys II. I'm guessing that probably goes against the norm, since most gamers just want more, more, more. More hours on the clock, more items to collect, more levels to gain, more people to interact with, etc., but I actually find the smaller, tighter adventure of the first game more refreshing. Well, either way, I've really enjoyed both. I am eager to finish, though. Separately, neither are long games, but played back-to-back, it's a fairly lengthy adventure for this genre. I've just about had my fill of Adol's escapades for the time being, but I do look forward to playing more Ys games in the future. Now I'm getting ahead of myself, though. First things first, I need to finish Ys II. :)

Since my last post, I beat Ys II via Legacy of Ys: Books I & II for DS, so having finished with both games on the DS card, back to the shelf it goes.
After that, I tried a little of Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi on PSP and Mega Man Zero Collection for DS, which are both recent purchases.
Starting up my next gaming commitment has been a bumpy road. I was thinking of finally playing through Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo on my modded model 2 SNES, or at least the half of the game that's a remake of the original Famicom game (like with Legacy of Ys, Monshou no Nazo contains two games that are often referred to as "Book I" and "Book II" as well; the first is a remake and the second is a brand new direct sequel). I played through a few battles over the course of a couple days, but when I got up to the 5th battle, I started getting problems with my SNES, which I've posted about in the Technical forum section. The problem seems to be the power supply, so until I figure out a fix or a replacement, it doesn't look like I'll be playing anything on SNES. :( Even though I can still get it to start up, the risk of losing power and, in turn, my progress is not something I want to deal with, as it was frustrating enough the first time.
Adding to my bad luck this week, I also came down with a cold, so that kinda of kills my desire for console gaming anyway. But it is a good opportunity to bust out my Game Boy Advance SP and play in bed, so I decided to start up The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Believe it or not, this is the first time I'm playing to completion any Zelda game released after Ocarina of Time. I've beaten all the Zelda games released before it, but none after. Anyway, I just beat the second dungeon in the game. It's pretty derivative and easy but still fun enough. The Zelda series is kind of like comfort food these days. It's no fine cuisine and you know exactly what you're going to get and you've had it tons of times before, but it's still pretty enjoyable to go through the motions. I can see why The Minish Cap isn't often brought up as someone's favorite Zelda game or even among the best, but it's not a bad game. It's just a very blatant hodgepodge of ALttP, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker. Shrinking down is kind of a cool twist, although at its core, it's just yet another rendition of the light/dark world concept. I do like looking out for tiny paths and holes and stuff and figuring out how I'm going to get where I want to go given the limitations of each size, though.

I just got the story-required kinstone I needed from the graveyard in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap on my Game Boy Advance SP. I'm surprised at just how long this game is lasting me considering I've been playing pretty heavily, and it's only got, what, 5 or 6 real dungeons in total? I guess they took the Majora's Mask approach in that there aren't many full-fledged dungeons but there's TONS of stuff to do with all the NPCs and on the overworld (even with the overworld also being kind of small). The time I've spent in the dungeons is just a sliver compared to all the time I've spent dinking around town, fusing kinstones, chasing after the results of kinstone fusions, collecting figurines, seeing what I can discover on the overworld with new tools, etc. etc. I can see why some people who rush through the game doing the bare minimum might be disappointed, but as a completionist, I think the game has plenty of meat to it. When I compare it to ALttP, which I beat for the first time just a couple years ago, that game has far more dungeons, but I blew through that game lightning quick, even with getting 100%. I think this game will be a little more memorable to me, as sacrilegious as that may sound to diehard ALttP fans, if only due to the length and its personality. I like how, like Link's Awakening, The Minish Cap has its own unique plot and, to some extent, setting. It may be Hyrule yet again and many of the characters are recycled from older Zelda games, but all the Picori stuff makes it feel like some sort of bizarro, parallel Hyrule (no, I don't care if or how it fits into the Zelda timeline). The NPCs have a lot of personality too. How nicely animated the game is contributes a lot to that, although there are also other little details like the goofy descriptions for the figurines. I gotta give the Zelda games one thing--since ALttP and, even more so, Link's Awakening, the localizations of these games are just fantastic. The silly gags, the fourth wall breaking, the lively delivery of lines, it all brings a lot of life to the games.

I'm nearly ready to beat The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap on my Game Boy Advance SP; I'm just working on collecting the odds and ends I'm missing. I finished my figurine collection and got all the heart pieces as well, but I have two missing kinstone fusions and I imagine those are gonna drive me crazy to find (not in Hyrule town, nor the Minish forest town, nor the Minish mountain town, and I'm all but certain that they're not red or blue fusions so these last two can literally be any random NPC hidden in some annoyingly out-of-the-way corner of the world). I don't know why I'm really bothering, though, because I'm screwed out of a 100% file anyway. I can't get the Mirror Shield to begin with, since that requires beating the game multiple times over, and I'm screwed out of the Light Arrows because I didn't save the possessed old man within the time window it was available. The extra annoying part is that I visited him multiple times over, and I never thought to try my Gust Jar. I stupidly assumed the ghost was just an irremovable part of his sprite. I was assuming that either a kinstone fusion would save him or something would change as the story went along. I never imagined that I would be completely cut off from getting an item after a certain point in the story, and I feel that's got to be the worst, stupidest thing this game does because it goes against everything that Zelda stands for. I don't know if any other Zelda games do this kind of crap, but this series is supposed to be about the spirit of exploration and as long as you're smart enough to discover something, figure out how to get it, and have the necessary tools and skills to pull it off, you should be able to acquire everything, whether it's the beginning of the game or the end. Other than my base complaints on the game of it being too easy and too derivative of past Zelda games, which I can largely overlook because a game doesn't necessarily have to be challenging and innovative to be good, solid fun (and, really, almost every Zelda game is guilty of these two charges anyway, and games that are difficult and innovative aren't always well-executed and fun), this time-sensitive crap is the only thing that's really soured my opinion of the game. I've still enjoyed myself, but it's a shame that they included this idiotic frustration just to annoy completionists and sell strategy guides (and I actually do own the official guide and had been looking at it a tiny bit, but I wanted to first try to get as much on my own as I could before really using it).

Well, I'm all done with The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap on my Game Boy Advance SP. Turns out the official guide was wrong about a couple things. I did get the Mirror Shield since it only requires beating the game once, saving, then reloading your file. I also was wrong in thinking I had all the figurines, as six more became available after beating the game too. I wish the guide was wrong about the Light Arrows, but, nope, I really did miss out on those. I got everything else, though. I kind of lucked out in getting the last few things. I completely stumbled across the last heart piece I needed, since none were jumping out at me as missing from the descriptions, so that saved me the trouble of rechecking all of them one by one. I wandered around a lot trying to find my two missing kinstone fusions, but when I finally stumbled across one, I was very happy to learn that the same NPC had both of them. I figured they'd be with two different characters and that my search would continue after the second to last. The rewards for getting every figurine and fusion are completely worthless, though. I'm not even talking worthless in a practical sense, like getting rupees when you don't need them anymore or something like that, I mean LITERALLY useless. The Tingle Trophy and Carlov Medal literally do nothing. They just replace the sprites for your kinstone bag and mysterious shells in your menu. But my OCD completionist nature isn't impacted by what rewards, if any, I get. :P
Anyway, I've yet to start up my next gaming commitment and I still can't return to my SNES gaming, but I did try out Rune Factory for DS, which I recently bought. Boy, are the polygonal models UGLY in this game, and their animations are atrocious. They don't even look human. They look like they have robot arms or something. The rest of the game looks nice enough, though, and it seems like something I'd have fun with once I really sit down with it. After all, I'm already a big fan of Harvest Moon, and I love RPGs and adventure games as well. The combination seems promising.

Resident Evil 2, PLaystation. Only way it was meant to be played, with a PS1 dual shock and jaggy polys

I recently acquired several imports, so I started on trying those out. On my PC Engine Duo-RX, I played some Dungeon Explorer and Monster Maker, and on my NES via a converter, I played Super Xevious. I sure wish these early Xevious games had better music because that annoying, repetitive crap really turns me off to playing. On paper, they seem like games I'd really like since my favorite shmups, like the TwinBee series and Dragon Spirit, also have the whole dual planes of combat concept (shooting things in the sky and bombing things on the ground).

I've been playing Halo 3: ODST lately with some friends to finish off our achievement list. I also started playing the Japanese import version of Alan Wake. Unfortunately theres nothing Japanese about it except for the language the manual is written in. All the menus and voice acting is in English. Theres not even an option to play or read anything in Japanese. I've gotten so used to playing Japanese imports on the PS1 that I miss actually having to work my way thru a mostly Japanese menu or dialogue screen. Oh well, it's still an awesome game.

Mario Kart Wii - Rainbow Road can go to hell.
Sonic 4 Episode II (Steam)- I like this a lot, great music and graphics, but two-player got kind of annoying since Tails can't even begin to keep up (I was playing Tails). Eventually I just gave up controlling him, except during the parts where flight is needed.

Still finishing off Halo 3:ODST achievements. Todays vid master one took around two hours. Two more and I'm finished that game. I've also played Sparticus, the new free to play 360 DLC game. It's a one-on-one fighting game with weapons and it's ok for a free game. But I haven't went back to it since my first time playing.

I've been getting a lot of problems with various things in my main entertainment center lately, so I decided it was as good a time as any to tear everything apart, dust everything really thoroughly, and rewire everything, while trying to figure out and solve the issues in the process. We've been having the video go out on the TV periodically until we fiddle with the cables, the sound from our speakers sometimes goes weird, the power strips are kind of in a questionable state, the PlayStation has been struggling to read some discs, the SNES power supply is crapping out, the N64 sometimes stays on even after flipping the switch, and no sound was coming from the white plug of my PC Engine Duo-RX A/V cable. I'm not saying all, or even any, of these problems are related, but it sure is strange to be facing so many issues at once when I'm used to all of my stuff working perfectly. But all this stuff has been hooked up for years, with many systems rarely getting touched, so I suppose I can understand issues creeping up after all this time, with some possibly not getting noticed for a long time.
So far we've determined that the speakers are functioning just fine and the problem was either from them being poorly hooked up, which they were, and/or the cheap speaker wire possibly giving out. My fiance fixed the Duo-RX's cable, although he wants to redo the job to make it a slight bit nicer looking. And we decided to just trash the old power strips and get a nice new one. We still haven't figured out what's going on with the video to the TV. Hopefully it's a problem with the cable or switcher or something and not the s-video jack on the TV itself getting loose. My fiance is going to try to fix the SNES plug, which I'm pretty confident will go well, and I'm guessing the N64 issue is just a matter of dust or something jamming up the power switch. With the PlayStation, I think it's unfortunately just a matter of age and use taking its toll. Maybe someday I'll buy a replacement laser unit, but until then I have other means to play PlayStation games anyway.
So yeah, my game playing is mostly on hold while we do all this, but I'm sure it'll feel good to have everything freshly wired, sparkling clean, and working well when it's all done. In the meantime, I did get a lot of good PC Engine gaming in while having the system going to test the speakers and its own cable. I did some multiplayer Detana! TwinBee, Dungeon Explorer, and Monster Lair, and I played Final Match Tennis, Hatris, Fire Pro Wrestling 3, Burai, and Ai Cho Aniki on my own, the latter two being new acquisitions. I also tried out another recent buy, Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu for Super Famicom. Even with my SNES plug being screwed, if I get the cable in a working spot and keep everything perfectly still while playing, I can keep it going for a while, but that's obviously no way to seriously play anything. I was good enough to try out the first battle in Fire Emblem, though.

I'm still finishing off COD: Black Ops II's campaign missions. I also need one more achievement in Halo 3: ODST but need a few extra people for it. I also just downloaded Assassin's Creed II for free on XBL although I have no idea when I'll get around to playing it. But free is always nice.

Finally got the last achievement I needed for Halo 3: ODST last night. Now I'm still playing COD: Black Ops II and tomorrow morning(because you can only play during set times) I will be trying out the World of Tanks beta on 360.
